One of my all-time favorite cookbooks has always been The Gift of Southern Cooking, co-written by the iconic and legendary Edna Lewis -- who blazed the trail for black chefs everywhere with her cooking and her writing -- and my patient today, her friend and colleague, James Beard award-winning chef, Scott Peacock. It was such a thrill to get to talk to Chef Peacock about his time with Ms. Lewis (as he calls her), to hear how she impacted his life, helped him embrace his Southern roots, and taught him about the importance of quiet in the kitchen. We go deep about Scott's original ambivalence about the South, how it was tied to his grandmother's poverty, his sense of shame, and how all of that changed after that first meeting with Ms. Lewis over coffee at Dean & Deluca in New York. Imagine being celebrated at an award ceremony at a California winery and having your mom and your boyfriend not show up, only to find out they both died in a plane crash on their way. This is the plight of Natalie Harper, who inherits both her mom's run-down bookshop and care of her grandfather as a result of the tragedy. It seems all is lost, but the shop's handyman Pete ‘Peach' Galloway and his daughter Dorothy keep finding solutions...like Dorothy's favorite author Trevor Dashwood, who always looks for the flip side in any tough situation, coming to do a book signing in the quaint little shop. The characters all find their way from grieving to thriving along the way to saving the shop. The wine we chose to pair with this lovely story is a 2018 Old Vine Zinfandel from Bedrock Wine Company, as it has notes of ‘Peach', violets and cherries. This company has another thing in common with the story, they rehabilitated old California vineyards and processes much as Natalie started in a California vineyard before bringing the bookshop back to life. Learn how grape juice becomes wine, the difference between how yeast and bacteria interact with wine, what viticulture and terroir have to do with your favorite sip and how zinfandel can be both a red and white wine. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/readingbetweenthewines/support

The Matrix Resurrections trailer just dropped and it has a lot of Matrix fans asking questions about Laurence Fishburne's Morpheus? The events that took place in the MMORPG video game, The Matrix Online, might just explain what happened to Laurence Fishburne's Morpheus. If we consider The Matrix Online a canonical continuation of the films, this might explain why we no longer see Laurence Fishburne's version of Morpheus in the Matrix Resurrections trailer. The Matrix explained within The Matrix Online, Morpheus faces a certain fate that would make it unlikely for Laurence Fishburne Morpheus to return. In this video, we'll discuss the Matrix Online Morpheus scene in detail and how it could potentially lead to Laurence Fishburne not being in the Matrix 4. The Matrix video games, both the Matrix Online and Matrix Path of Neo, are part of the Matrix story and the Matrix extended universe. The #TheMatrixResurrections movie drops December 22nd. #TheMatrix In other news, there's a firmware update coming to an Xbox One controller near you that'll give you next-gen features. Microsoft announced in a blog post that they're testing a new firmware update for Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One controllers, Xbox Elite 2, and Xbox Adaptive controllers that'll give them all kinds of cool features that were previously only available on Xbox Series X and S controllers. And finally, LEGO revealed this cool foldout playset that's in the form of the iconic Question Mark block. When you open it, you get a gander at Peach's Castle, Bob-omb Battlefield, Cool Cool Mountain, and Lethal Lava Land. #IGN

Mario has been a video game star for 40 years. And his brother Luigi has ridden his brother's coattails...er overalls to 'super' stardom. Join us as we look back on the Mario Bros and how they've evolved on Enjoy Stuff! There are few characters that have been as popular as Mario on the video game world. His legacy spans more than 200 different games. He and his brother have also starred in cartoons and movies and they show no signs of slowing down. Let's Enjoy Mario! News -Kellogg's Sued by Woman Over Ingredients in Pop-Tarts -”Dug Days” Shorts premiered on Disney+ -The Rocketeer Will Return in a New Disney+ Movie -Suicide Squad almost had more Mario references What we're Enjoying Jay rewatched the 2020 Charlize Theron movie The Old Guard, a tale of immortal beings helping humanity and how they try to deal with each other. Check it out on Netflix. Shua revisited some classic books of his youth written by Keith Laumer. The Retief series is about an unconventional diplomat in space who gets things done by breaking the rules of the stuffy bureaucracy. Find these books on Amazon. Enjoy Games Forty years ago, Jumpman rescued Paulina from the title character in Donkey Kong. That tricky ape went on to do some of his own follow up projects, but how many video game characters can say they've appeared in more than 200 follow-ups. Probably none but Mario. His legacy spans many years and a continual evolution that is still going today. He may have started off as the hero in his first game, but in Donkey Kong Jr. he decided to show his nasty side as the antagonist. From there he went back to being the hero with his brother in the 1983 Mario Bros. In the 80's popular games meant cartoon spin offs. The Saturday Morning Supercade gathered favorite characters of the arcade, including Mario. Then his first real sequel dropped in 1988 in the strangely different Super Mario 2. Now you could play a variety of characters. This inspired other platforms like the Game Boy, another show with the first live action version, played by wrestler Lou Albano, and products galore. His #3 game was even the focus of the 1989 movie with Fred Savage called The Wizard. This year marks the anniversary of what is considered to be one of the best video games of all time, Super Mario World for the SNES. Along with new 16 bit programming, this game featured all kinds of new abilities, characters, and levels. We look back on the legendary game and how Mario and his brother continue to evolve today. Are you a fan of Mario? Do you have favorite games? Let us know in the Discord channel or send us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org

The ray of sunshine from across the pond joins us on this week's episode of Angle on Producers. Rowena Wallace is a UK producer who always dreamed of working in film. Her dreams came true as she climbed her way through the ranks, maintaining connections and working hard. She is a singular presence, and I'm not just talking about her love of negotiating (which we unpack). She started her Peach House, focused on shepherding up-and-coming artists and nurturing her ever-growing production slate. Peach House is a female-founded talent management and production house est. in 2019 by George Monkland and Rowena Wallace and backed by talent management collective Tricycle Talent. Tricycle's founder and media veteran Sara Curran is the Peach House chairman. She is a mentor with the UK-based company Creative Access, and lucky for us, she did a bit of mentoring on this episode as well. We dive into the art of cold emailing, how to cultivate your luck and the benefits of leading with kindness. Oh, and much much more.

Feel free to pause, jump back, or navigate the steps via the podcast chapters.Peach Tart1 1/2 cups plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour3/4 teaspoon kosher salt3/4 cup plus 1 teaspoon sugar1/4 cup vegetable or canola oil1/4 cup mild olive oil2 tablespoons whole milk1/2 teaspoon almond extract2 tablespoons cold, unsalted butter3 small ripe peaches (up to 5), pitted and thickly sliced (about 1/2-inch wide)Heat the oven to 425 degrees. In a mixing bowl, stir together 1 1/2 cups flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon sugar. Stirring enables the salt and sugar to sift the flour, so you don't need to sift it in advance. In a small bowl, whisk together the oils, milk and almond extract. Pour this mixture into the flour mixture and mix gently with a fork, just enough to dampen; do not over work it. Then, transfer the dough to an 11-inch tart pan (you can use a smaller one if needed), and use your hands to pat out the dough so it covers the bottom of the pan, pushing it up the sides to meet the edge. This will work if you pat firmly and confidently, but not if you curl your fingertips into the dough. It should be about 1/ 8-inch thick all around; trim and discard excess dough. In a bowl, combine 3/4 cup sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, 1/4 teaspoon salt and the butter. (If your peaches are especially juicy, add 1 tablespoon additional flour.) Using your fingers, pinch the butter into the dry ingredients until crumbly, with a mixture of fine granules and tiny pebbles.Starting on the outside, arrange the peaches overlapping in a concentric circle over the pastry; fill in the center in whatever pattern makes sense. The peaches should fit snugly. Sprinkle the pebbly butter mixture over top (it will seem like a lot). Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, until shiny, thick bubbles begin enveloping the fruit and the crust is slightly brown. Cool on a rack. Serve warm or room temperature, preferably with generous dollops of whipped cream.Have a recipe you'd like to hear us make?
