Humans are social animals. We're not the strongest, fastest, or even best adapted to our environment. But what we excel at is our ability to work together, which means we've been able to adapt to every environment, a true outlier in the animal kingdom. And a big reason for that is our ability to empathize with others. Basically, empathy is the ability to step into someone else's shoes, understand what they are thinking or feeling, and share in that emotional experience. The main types of empathy are cognitive, affective (or emotional), and somatic. Derek looks at the first two in segment two through the lens of Paul Bloom's work, but given a recent book by Lebanese-born Canadian marketing professor, Gad Saad (which Matthew covers in segment three), we thought we'd look at how empathy is being used, and potentially distorted, in modern society. Or, as Julian starts with, how it's being weaponized on social media by Christian nationalists. "From the Frontlines" is an ADL podcast which brings listeners to the frontline in the battle against antisemitism, hate and extremism through conversations with ADL staff, advocates and, in this podcast, five college and university leaders who are getting something right. This podcast an edited version of a webinar from the end of last semester, titled "Top of the Class: Report Card Success Stories," bringing together five campus leaders from institutions that earned an A on ADL's most recent Campus Antisemitism Report Card. It was sponsored by the ADL NY/NJ Region's Campus Committee. ADL's 2026 Campus Antisemitism Report Card, its third annual assessment, found that 58 percent of the colleges and universities that ADL evaluated received an A or a B, up from 41 percent the year before and just under 24 percent the year before that. That is real, measurable progress. And right here in ADL's New York/New Jersey region, six schools earned an A: Queens College, Baruch College, Brooklyn College, Rockland Community College, NYU and Vassar College. It's my honor to welcome Dr. Emmaia Gelman back to Speaking Out of Place. Today we will be discussing her new book, The Anti-Defamation League and the Racial State. This massive and detailed work of history argues that the Anti-Defamation League, popularly known as a civil rights organization fighting White Supremacy and anti-Semitism, is better understood as promoting a particular set of interests. The ADL is seen consistently promoting an intensely individualistic notion of rights while undermining and attacking structural critiques of racism, thereby preserving the colonial project. More and more, the ADL's interests construct Jewishness as synonymous with Zionism, and its exclusive aim is to fuse three keywords: hate, terrorism, and anti-Semitism, in order to suppress anti-Zionist activism, preserve the on-going genocide and expand the Zionist state. This is a book that demands attention if we are to understand the US-Israel nexus which has brought us the war on Iran, and repressed dissent.Emmaia Gelman is the author of The Anti-Defamation League and the Racial State, a critical history of the Anti-Defamation League as a Cold War neoconservative institution (UC Press, 2026) and co-editor of The Anti-Defamation League: A Critical Reader (Pluto Press, 2026). She co-hosts the podcast Unpacking Zionism. Emmaia is co-chair of the American Studies Association Caucus on Academic and Community Activism, and a longtime activist in New York City.She is the founding director of the Institute for the Critical Study of Zionism, which examines the political and ideological work of Zionist institutions in Palestine and transnational contexts. Back in the fall, Trump's NSPM-7 redirected the FBI, DOJ, and IRS toward "left-wing political violence," opening the door to labeling domestic groups terrorist organizations — despite three independent datasets (New America, CSIS, even the ADL!) showing right-wing violence outpacing left-wing violence by factors of 9-to-1 or greater. Last week, Rubio's "Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism" internationalized this McCarthy reboot. Central to the rhetoric of Rubio and Miller is framing leftist politics as being driven by envy and resentment rather than a response to inequality. Matthew traces this rhetoric, empirically contradicted by relative deprivation research, back through Nietzsche, Scheler, Schoeck, and Rand. "From the Frontlines" is an ADL podcast which brings listeners to the frontline in the battle against antisemitism, hate and extremism through conversations with ADL staff, advocates and, in this podcast, three people who spend their careers confronting hate in one of the most trusted institutions in American life: our hospitals, our medical schools and our healthcare system. This podcast an edited version of a webinar titled "Hate in Healthcare? Antisemitism in the Health Profession and Ways to Counter It." It was co-sponsored by ADL's Westchester activist group and the ADL NY/NJ Region's Campus Committee. So why healthcare? Because most people do not think of a hospital or a medical school as a frontline in the fight against antisemitism, but it is. Dr. Halperin, one of this podcast's guests, has spent decades documenting the history of Jewish quotas in American medical education, a period when nearly 60 percent of medical school applicants nationally were Jewish, yet admissions were capped at somewhere between 5 and 20 percent. That history is not as distant as we would like to believe. A 2025 survey of Jewish healthcare professionals found that more than 75 percent reported experiencing antisemitism in their own workplace since October 7th. Just this past May, Congress held a hearing titled "Bad Medicine: Politics, Unions and Antisemitism in Health Care" to examine exactly this problem. As one of this podcast's guests testified before that very committee, antisemitism in medicine is, at its core, a patient care crisis. So who is confronting this inside the walls of our medical schools and our healthcare institutions? This podcast offers three answers to that question with its three esteemed guests: - Dr. Edward Halperin is Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer of New York Medical College, where he is also a professor of radiation oncology, pediatrics and history and holds an endowed chair in biomedical ethics after the Holocaust. He is one of the country's foremost historians of antisemitism in American medical education, having spent decades documenting the quotas that limited Jewish enrollment in medical schools for much of the twentieth century, and he has continued that work by speaking out on antisemitism in the medical profession today. - Eveline Shekhman is the Chief Executive Officer of the American Jewish Medical Association, the national professional organization for Jewish healthcare professionals, founded in the aftermath of October 7th. She leads AJMA's work supporting Jewish physicians, fellows, residents and medical students facing discrimination and hostile workplace environments, and she recently testified before Congress on the rise of antisemitism and anti-Zionism in American healthcare. - And Masha Zemtsov is ADL's Director of education advocacy, helping schools, universities and institutions build the tools and policies needed to recognize and respond to antisemitism before it takes root. Her work bridges exactly the gap we are here to talk about tonight: what happens when the institutions meant to train and support our healthcare professionals are not yet equipped to confront hate within their own walls. What really happened to hatred in America after World War II?Most of us were taught that defeating Hitler marked a turning point — that America emerged from the war more tolerant, more unified, more committed to its democratic ideals. Historian Steven J. Ross is here to tell us that story is a myth. And he has the documents to prove it.In this episode, Rabbi Yoshi sits down with one of America's most compelling Jewish historians to discuss Ross's new book, The Secret War Against Hate: American Resistance to Antisemitism and White Supremacy — a USA Today bestseller that uncovers a hidden chapter of postwar American history. Closer to home, Gelman says the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has been a “chief weapon against the anti-genocide movement in the US.” Gelman's new book, The Anti-Defamation League and the Racial State, looks at how this organization has facilitated the movement of capital and weapons from the US to Israel and how the ADL has been successful at positioning itself as a defender of democracy and civil rights, but is actually using claims of antiracism to do conservative work. Gelman says that US imperialism and Zionism are shared projects and that we shouldn’t be surprised about the ADL's collusion with the government given their history of spying on other groups. "From the Frontlines" is an ADL podcast which brings listeners to the frontline in the battle against antisemitism, hate and extremism through conversations with ADL staff who are living that battle every day. This podcast was recorded before a live podcast audience at ADL New York/New Jersey's Annual Meeting at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park City in NYC. It is an important panel discussion with three of the most distinguished district attorneys across the country who all serve in a borough of New York City: Queens DA Melinda Katz, Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez and Staten Island DA Michael McMahon. The discussion focused on their efforts to prosecute hate at time when antisemitism globally, nationwide and in NYC is surging. ADL's most recent Audit of Antisemitic Incidents shows that 2025 was the third highest year on record for antisemitic incidents since ADL began tracking such data in 1979. 2024 was the highest year, followed by 2023. There is consistently no state with more antisemitic incidents than New York State, and three-quarters of those incidents take place in New York City. The comparative picture seems even starker. In 2025, 58 percent of the hate crimes in New York City were anti-Jewish, and that has only risen in 2026. That means that if you add up all the hate crimes perpetrated against all of the other groups in this City, you will not reach the number targeting Jews. ADL's CEO Jonathan Greenblatt put it plainly: “numbers that would have shocked us five years ago are now our floor.” So who stands between those numbers and the real people behind them? In this episode we are joined by Emmaia Gelman, author of The Anti-Defamation League and the Racial State, a critical history of the ADL as a Cold War neoconservative institution. Gelman excavates the Anti-Defamation League's origins as a white, settler colonial institution founded by German-Jewish elites—not to combat antisemitism broadly, but to manage class respectability and suppress Eastern European Jewish immigrant socialists whom they viewed as a racial and social threat. Gelman looks back at how early Jewish settlers had built fortunes through participation in 19th-century US territorial expansion, Indigenous dispossession, and slavery's economic system, understanding themselves as white Europeans racially distinct from the "vermin" arriving from the Pale of Settlement. The ADL and its predecessor, the American Jewish Committee (founded 1906), operated as Progressive Era eugenicist charities designed to "correct and fix" rather than support self-determination, preemptively capturing Jewish political identity to prevent autonomous radical organizing. Gelman traces how the ADL evolved from an instrument of McCarthyite purges—coordinating mass firings of Jewish leftists in 1951, offering its services to McCarthy committee members, and abandoning Julius and Ethel Rosenberg to execution while denying antisemitism played any role in their prosecution (the judge who sentenced them sat on the ADL's Civil Rights Committee)—into a key architect of Cold War anti-communism and neoconservative "democracy promotion." The organization attacked Arab League representatives speaking about Zionist violence in Palestine as early as 1946, treating Palestinian and Arab organizing as "foreign insurgency" while framing Jewish fundraising for Israeli settlement as natural civic participation. After Israel's 1967 military victory, the ADL strategically re-racialized Jews as non-white within the framework of race liberalism, allowing it to cast Israeli militarism as defensive racial liberation and Arab calls for refugee return as antisemitic rather than anti-colonial. This racial pivot occurred precisely as European Jews had achieved economic whiteness through the GI Bill, suburbanization, and the collapse of university quotas—benefits systematically denied to Black populations through redlining.
