In 1943, Philip K. Wrigley (of chewing gum fame!) founded the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) in order to maintain sport and public morale during World War II, at a time when many eligible young men, including professional sportsmen, were drafted to fight overseas.Whilst A League of Their Own is a mostly fictional account of the players and founders behind the AAGPBL, it still tells a story of the real-life resilience, spirit and tenacity of the young women involved, many of whom had husbands fighting in the war, coming together to provide entertainment and boost the morale of the nation through sport, despite the sexism and misogyny of the era.Penny Marshall's 1992 movie remains my favourite, and dare I say it, the greatest sports movie of all time. A story of determination, sisterly love, sacrifice and friendship within the very real backdrop of World War II, when women could finally prove they were more than just potential housewives and mothers.Geena Davis embodies the 40s starlet as the statuesque, seemingly perfect Dottie Hinson. Tom Hanks, playing against type as alcoholic ex-player-turned-manager Jimmy Dugan delivers most of the movie's iconic lines. Lori Petty as Kit Keller, just wants to step out of her older sister's perfect shadow and Madonna, in probably one of her most beloved screen roles, as "All The Way" Mae Mordabito, with a great on-screen comedic partnership with Rosie O'Donnell's brash Doris Murphy.Even though the real AAGPBL was dismantled in 1954, its legacy lives on in this movie. It encapsulates a time in recent history that not many are still alive to tell the story of. Sadly, Mary Pratt, the last remaining member of that inaugural 1943 Rockford Peaches roster, passed away just before this episode was (originally) released. She lived to 101 and spent her life championing women's sport. These women were inspirational, trail-blazing, legacy-creating and really were in a league of their own.Episode originally released 14th May 2020Mentioned in this episode:From the ArchiveThere's no new episode this week, so I thought you might be interested in revisiting this slightly older, but no less brilliant episode. Just bear in mind, this episode is several years old, it may not sound quite as polished as newer episodes, and new information may have come to light in recent years with regards to the making of this movie (please see above for the original date of release) Please enjoy this time capsule of an episode. Praise for The Emir's Falcon “One peregrine falcon raised in a breeding facility, to be released into the wilds of northern Alberta. Three older teens from different cultures, their lives already mapped out by parental expectations. An impulsive action by one places that falcon at the crux of a potential international incident and brings all to the brink of catastrophe in the wilderness. A fascinating and insightful read.” - Alison Lohans, author of Timefall, Don't Think Twice, and twenty-eight other books for young people and adults “The Emir's Falcon is a rich story that soars with action, drama and detail. It raises important issues of cultural and environmental conflict and still entertains and surprises right to the last sentence.” - Arthur Slade, author of Dust, winner of the Governor General's Award http://matthewhughes.org Gayle M. Smith, author of Thickwood, grew up on a mixed subsistence farm in central Alberta where, as a young child, she developed a love for animals, especially horses, and a love for reading and writing illustrated stories. In 1989, Gayle married a Saskatchewan farmer and settled into rural life to raise three children, numerous crops, purebred and commercial cattle, and horses. In 2011, Gayle was accepted into the 2011 Saskatchewan Writers' Guild Mentorship program, where she wrote the first draft of Thickwood, which then became her master's thesis in 2015, when she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Master of Fine Arts in Writing.Yearly wilderness pack trips in Northern Saskatchewan with her horses inspire her writing. She also rides in the mountains, competes in numerous equestrian events, and owns and operates a horse boarding facility. Gayle's love of the environment, history, and adventure shines in her writing. She daily interacts with her beloved partner, her family, her horses, and her rural home, while contemplating and exploring through her writing the struggle and dilemma of being human. About the book Raised on a ranch in Saskatchewan's rugged Thickwood Hills, where the prairie transitions to forest, Willomena Swift, home from playing for the Rockford Peaches of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, finds a precious foal killed by a rogue stallion. The stallion's owner, once Willo's baseball coach, now chairs the committee heading up the new cooperative pasture—a pasture that is set to swallow her family lease, where she grew up, learned to love and understand horses, and dreamed of returning to raise them. Facing numerous challenges with both the stallion and his owner, Willo remembers her past years playing professional baseball as she struggles to realize her dreams in the present. Amid romance and tragedy, Willo must find a way to stand on her own and assert her rightful place in her beloved Thickwood. In episode 20, we "chat up" the Amazon Prime series A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN with author and poet Toni Asante Lightfoot about the character Max Chapman, her family including her trans uncle Bertie, best friend Clance, and Rockford's African American community as depicted in the series. In the 1992 "A League of Their Own" feature film on which this series is based, you see the grit and romance of the game with the Rockford Peaches and women baseball teams that were part of the All American Professional Girls Baseball League during WWII. What was not prominent in the 1992 movie (more subtext) are untold stories of African American, Latina, and queer women baseball players and the lives they lived in the 1940s and 50s. These stories are highlighted in the Amazon Prime series. A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN (the 2022 series) is co-created by Abbi Jacobson (who plays Rockford Peaches player Carson Shaw) and Will Graham. BONUS content: Toni Asante Lightfoot reads her poem “Bat Her Up: Mom's Mabley watches Negro women play ball for their supper” (mentioned in Episode 20). You'll find the bonus content at this LINK. The 1992 film A League Of Their Own is a beloved sports movie classic – thanks to a memorable all-star cast led by Geena Davis and Tom Hanks, and repeat showings on cable TV. It's a fictionalized account of The Rockford Peaches, the real-life professional women's baseball team that was formed during World War II. With a new TV series adaptation on Amazon, now seems like the perfect time to revisit the original and reflect on its enduring legacy.

“A League of Their Own” is a fictional account of a real moment in history when WWII prompted major league baseball to start a new professional league with women, called the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). The 1992 film follows The Rockford Peaches, the most successful team in the league, during their first season. Catcher Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and her little sister, pitcher Kit Keller (Lori Petty), have a classic sibling rivalry rooted in a love of competition and a well of insecurity. Kit has always envied Dottie's talent and beauty, feeling resentful of how easily good things seem to come her way. Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell play Mae Mordabito and Doris Murphy, two friends who are honestly kind of forgettable because their roles are underwritten. Mae is a center fielder who used to be a dancer in a club and enjoys gentleman attention. Doris plays third base and … is kind of loud, I guess? Marla Hooch (Megan Cavanagh) is the “ugly” second base woman who can hit like a motherfucker. Another casting highlight is Tom Hanks as the drunk, washed up former baseball player-turned-manager, Jimmy Dugan. The plot loosely builds to the final World Series Game between the Rockford Peaches and the Racine Belles and then time jumps to the present day, when these women are being honored by the Baseball Hall of Fame. Here are some things we mentioned during the episode: Interview with Penny Marshall and Lori Petty Rosie O'Donnell and Madonna on "Arsenio Jams" Marjorie Magazine article about Black women and the AAGPBL Britni de la Cretaz's piece in "Narratively" about the hidden queer history of "A League of Their Own" If you are in Michigan, please make sure you sign the Reproductive Freedom for All petition, sponsored by the ACLU and Planned Parenthood. You can find a location to sign the petition (it must be done in person) here. "A League of Their Own" is currently streaming on Amazon Prime and can be rented from all of the standard places. At one point, I think I mention the Rockford Peaches being "inducted" into the Baseball League of Hall of Fame. What I really mean to say is that they were honored with an exhibit. Thus far, Effa Manley is the only woman who has been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Happy 30th Anniversary to this classic fictionalized sports drama about the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) which was started in 1943 during World War II as a temporary replacement or Major League Baseball as most players were serving overseas at the time – it featured several great female athletes from account the country who had never had the opportunity to play baseball at this level before.  Geena Davis starts as the catcher Dottie Hinson with Lori Petty as her sister Kit who's a pitcher – they play for the Rockford Peaches who are being managed by Jimmy Dugan played by Tom Hanks in a performance which earned him an Oscar nomination.  The stacked cast also includes Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, and it was directed by the late great Penny Marshall.  Just in time for July 4th, let's revisit this tale of America's Pastime….albeit from a somewhat different angle.

Episode 126 features Maybelle Blair and Shirley Burkovich, former All American Girls Professional Baseball League players who inspired the movie, A League of Their Own and Amy Mills, known as the heiress of barbecue Maybelle Blair and Shirley Burkovich are women who loved playing baseball, were great at it, and were excited to have the opportunity to make money doing it.  If you are a fan of the movie, A League of Their Own which reintroduced America to the real-life All American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) then you will enjoy listening to their wonderful stories.  Ask Maybelle how she is and she will say, "Pretty good for this old gal, and it is a good day when you wake up on this side of the grass."  Shirley played for three AAGPBL teams from 1949-1951, one of which is the famous Rockford Peaches.  Maybelle served as inspiration for the character, Mae Mordabito aka All the Way Mae played in the film by Madonna.  Ask Maybelle how much Madonna's character resembled her, and she will say not that much, but then Shirley pipes in affirming that the characterization fit Maybelle extremely well.  It is that back and forth good-natured ribbing that is so enjoyable and makes one appreciate the special bond they share.  At 95 and 89 years of age, they are not even close to letting up from achieving their dream of raising money for a women's baseball museum to be built in Rockford, Illinois.  Go to https://www.internationalwomensbaseballcenter.org/donate/ to make a donation or to learn more.  Amy Mills is known as a barbecue heiress as she is the daughter of champion pitmaster and Barbecue Hall of Fame inductee, Mike Mills, who was affectionately known as "The Legend."  Getting to everything was impossible, but we tried to at least scratch the surface with a conversation that included stories on the books she co-authored with her dad, including James Beard Foundation award-nominated and National Barbecue Association Award of Excellence winner, Peace, Love, and Barbecue and the book, Praise the Lard.  We talked about her incredible presentation at The Welcome Conference, which is labeled on YouTube as Amy Mills-Recognizing Right.  Amy explained the three principles which apply to her business, which include the two 17th Street Barbecue restaurants and Oncue Consulting:  (1) Generosity is a recipe for success.  (2) Barbecue is a culture, not a concept.  (3) Home is the most excellent place of all.  Amy did not always want to be in the family business, but she came back, is happy she did and credits a yellow post-it note for the push.  There is even a story involving George Wendt who played Norm on the TV show Cheers. We recommend you go to Fifth & Cherry, https://fifthandcherry.com for wonderful cutting boards, Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com for unique baseball-themed grilling tools and accessories, the  Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, and BBQ Buddha, https://bbqbuddha.com for rubs and award-winning sauces. In celebration of the baseball season starting, this week we recast A League of Their Own. This 1992 ode to women's baseball was so much fun to recast. I'm not sure if this counts as a “TRC After Dark” episode or not, but the Jameson and laughs were flowing freely and we go all over the place in this one. Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Rosie O'Donnell, Tom Hanks, and Madonna all headline this “based on a true story” feature about the Rockford Peaches in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.
