Originally from the states, Andy grew up immersed in North American outdoor culture before relocating to NZ later in his adult life. In this episode Andy and I chat about adventure racing and a small but growing adventure racing community in Te Anau, on the edge of Fiordland National Park in New Zealand. Andy is the enthusiasm behind FEAR Society (AKA Fiordland Endurance and Adventure Racing Society), which is now in its fourth year serving dirtbag adventure racers. We talk about Andy’s Godzone Fiordland experience, specifically how on earth he managed to get such terrible trench foot and how he pushed through it. We also discuss risk and parenting, ego and the outdoors. We touch on the differences between North American and Kiwi outdoor culture and why Andy thinks New Zealanders make such strong adventure racers.EPISODE LINKSFEAR society websiteFEAR youth Facebook page Ultramental (Andy’s book)MUSIC: Wild & Free by Hope Social Club

Andy Magness is many things — husband, father, recreational philosopher, novice gardener, reluctant homeowner, occasional adventurer, part-time athlete, race director, youth philanthropist, burgeoning author, and eternal possibilitist (not to mention avid neologist). An avid climber and mountaineer during his younger days, Andy followed his twin brother Jason into the world of extreme endurance sports more than a decade go. His experiments in high intensity training for these events began as he tried to keep up with Jason while simultaneously starting a family and going back to graduate school in Physics. Andy has had continuous success competing in a variety of ultra-endurance disciplines despite reducing his weekly training commitment from 3 hours a week in 2007 to between 30 and 60 minutes a week at present (2018)! In his most recent extreme endurance event, GODZone, Andy's team placed 7th out of 100 teams. Check out Andy's first appearance on the podcast here and Andy's excellent book - UltraMental: An unconventional approach to training for endurance events on a few hours a week (or less) In this episode, we cover: Andy's tortuous ordeal competing in GODZone (one of the toughest adventure races on the planet) How Andy uses HIT principles to maintain fitness and prepare for endurance events How to cultivate a healthier well-being in the face of unrealistic expectations and social media … and much, much more Learn how to build a team in your HIT Business HERE This episode is brought to you by ARXFit.com, ARX are the most innovative, efficient and effective all-in-one exercise machines I have ever seen. I was really impressed with my ARX workout. The intensity and adaptive resistance were unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I love how the machine enables you to increase the negative load to fatigue target muscles more quickly and I love how the workouts are effortlessly quantified. The software tracks maximum force output, rate of work, total amount of work done and more in front of you on-screen, allowing you to compete with your pervious performance, to give you and your clients real-time motivation. Andy Magness is a husband, father, recreational philosopher, occasional adventurer, part-time athlete, race director, youth philanthropist, and author. Andy is a rock climber turned ultra endurance fanatic and pushes his mind and body to it's limits. I don't think he'll mind me saying that I think he's borderline crazy as illustrated and reinforced by his impressive Race Resume. To prepare for this podcast, I set aside some time to read through his website and resources. I was so impressed with his Ultra Mental Book that I devoured it one sitting. I thought it was beautifully written, funny, authentic and very practical. Andy has an MA in physics, and due to a growing list of responsibilities, he decided to put his scientific brain to work to figure out how he could continue to participate in adventure races whilst significantly reducing his training volume. Andy stumbled across HIIT (high intensity interval training) and found that he could train for 1-3 hours a week (typically just 1 hour a week!) and reduce his risk of injury, improve his performance and make more time for his other responsibilities and past times. Andy's story and race performances are a powerful testimony for the efficacy of high intensity training and how it can be applied to prevent injury, increase training efficiency, and get better results. It's refreshing to hear about the productive application of HIT outside the world of body building. Andy's work has shown that appropriate physical conditioning (like HIT or HIIT) can serve as the foundational training program for many athletic pursuits. We cover A LOT, including: How Andy went from training 15+ hours to 1 hour per week and improved his performance. What 20% of mental exercises Andy uses for maximum benefit. Is the will power needed for ultra endurance races hard wired or can it be learned? The importance of training specificity to the actual competition. How to train your cardiovascular system without putting in 10, 20, 30 training hours per week. How to significantly reduce the risk of injury when training for ultra endurance events/any competition. The different diets recommended for ultra endurance. The hardest event and experience that Andy has ever been through (including a near death experience that gave him a perspective that would serve him for years to come). The best way to prepare for a 12 km obstacle race for optimal performance. This episode is sponsored by Hituni.com, providers of the best online courses in high intensity training. It's been a while and Ben catches up on what's been happening lately, talks about an upcoming coaching project with Coach Drew Edsall, and then chats with Andy Magness, who is the director of ENDracing in North Dakota and author of Ultra Mental. The discussion with Andy is filled with great insight, ideas, and thoughts about kids, endurance training, and overall living a mindful life. I want to hear from you! If you have any questions, comments, or ideas for the next episode, contact us at ben@mountainbikeradio.com. --------------------------------------------------- About Ultra Mental: "This book is not intended to replace training that works. It is not designed to argue that tried and true methods of preparing for endurance events should be abandoned. It does not describe a shortcut to fitness, nor does it suggest an easy route to success in ultra-endurance efforts. What it does do is build a case for an idea that application of consistent high intensity training can provide a level of fitness from which a mentally tough athlete can approach, succeed at, and enjoy endurance sports..." --------------------------------------------------- SHOW NOTES: ENDracing website - http://endracing.com/ ENDracing on Twitter - https://twitter.com/endracing ENDracing on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/endracing Ultra Mental Book - http://ultramentalbook.com/ Ultra Mental Book on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/ultramentalbook?ref=hl Ultra Mental Book on Twitter - https://twitter.com/ultramentalbook Buy the Ultra Mental Book - http://ultramentalbook.com/buy-the-book/ Coach Drew Edsall - http://coachdrewedsall.com/ Wahoo KICKR Power Trainer - http://www.wahoofitness.com/devices/wahoo-kickr-powertrainer-2.html Frostbike - http://frostbike.com/ Frozen 40 - http://frozen40.com/ Abominable Run - http://abominablerun.com/ Being Dad Show on Twitter Mountain Bike Radio on Twitter Mountain Bike Radio on Facebook Email Andy Magness/ENDracing - endracing@gmail.com Email Ben
