Venture back with me to 2013: “Wrecking Ball” is blaring on your radio for the ninetieth time today, skinny jeans have America in a chokehold, and podcasts aren't considered top-tier entertainment — or not like they are now. That's because new research compiled by the Pew Research Center shows that a decade ago, a mere 12 percent of Americans ages 12 and up hadn't listened to a podcast in the last month… Today, in 2023, that number has jumped to an astonishing 42 percent. It's a seismic shift in the sonic landscape — a revolution in how people consume a symphony of stories, insights, and education. As I wrap up this year with 13,630,038 downloads (but who's counting?), 2023 emerges as a standout year for monumental growth with the global podcast listener count clocking in at a whopping 464.7 million and projections for 2024 suggesting an even more jaw-dropping figure of 504.9 million listeners. Twice a week, for nearly two decades now, I've hosted podcasts, including my old podcasts I used to own and run such as Endurance Planet, the Get-Fit Guy, Rock Star Triathlete Academy, Train For Top Dollar, Ben Greenfield Fitness, and many others. Since then, I've recorded several THOUSAND episodes of content that are a virtual library (or two) (or three) of in-depth information to empower you to upgrade your lifespan and healthspan; find purpose, happiness, fulfillment, and connection, explore new adventures and challenges; discover how to use cutting-edge strategies to hack your life; and achieve full optimization of mind, body, and spirit, all with boundless energy that equips you to go and conquer every mountain you've been called to climb.  Crafting this final episode for the year, my team and I wanted to showcase the top podcasts that listeners tuned into the most. Condensed to around an hour and a half, these discussions offer quick highlights, and if you're eager for more, I've linked to the original podcasts for a deeper dive. More recently, Robb wrote a book titled Sacred Cow which also was produced as a documentary which you've probably seen advertised on Netflix. Robb is also the cofounder of the exploding electrolyte brand called LMNT, which I absolutely love. When I originally scheduled my conversation with Robb, he sent me a huge box of LMNT which I thought was such a cool gesture, and after drinking it for a few days Im now absolutely hooked. I have no affiliation with LMNT and get no kickback from them and I'm very hesitant to suggest or recommend supplements, but LMNT is one that I really love and has become a staple in my daily routine. And if you don't know Robb from any of the things I've already mentioned, then maybe you recognize him as a former guest on ultra popular podcasts like The Joe Rogan Experience, Ben Greenfield Fitness, Cleared Hot, Mark Bells Power Project, The Doctors Pharmacy, and many many more. If you can't tell, Robb is a guy who does a lot. He's brilliant, articulate, and unapologetically rational, refusing to let politics or other ulterior motives manipulate his conclusions but above it all Robb is an incredible man, husband, and father, and I am so excited to share this conversation with him.Discussion PointsWhat in the world does Robb Wolf do?How Robb became the defender of all things meatThe sustainability argument for meat consumptionWhy Robb is so passionate about defending meat consumptionResponsibility of parents to serve their kids nutritional foodsSimple rules for family nutritionLong term effects of bad nutrition in kidsProviding good nutritional options for kidsHow to shop at the grocery storeIs organic meat worth it??What Robb is the most proud ofWhat Robb struggles with personallyWhat Robb wants his legacy to be with his kidsLinkswww.robbwolf.comwww.drinklmnt.com

"Limbic isolations are really really important because they either synchronize or asynchronize a whole wealth of pathways on the brainstems that keep us healthy and vital. And when we don't have that, it shuts it all down, so a lot of people might find they have a lot of anxiety, and there can be a lot of neurological confusion that happens with the brain." - Dr. John Lieurance   Releasing Hidden Fears "We carry a lot of fears that are based on thoughts that we believe are true like 'I'm not good enough' or 'I'm not loved.' What might be covering that up are thoughts like, 'My father doesn't respect me' or 'I'm going to be late for this appointment and they'll be made.' Those thoughts are covering up all of these hidden fears that we all carry and when you start to get into psychedelics or breathwork or even this endonasal treatment that I do, they take us back to a calm state and help us let go of those fears as they de-regulate our default mode network."- Dr. John Lieurance   Holding The Breath = Holding The Trauma "When we hold our breath, that's the veil. You have trauma, you hold your breath, it's going to push it into the subconscious. It's going to be there and it's going to control you in a way that's probably not going to be positive and create suffering." - Dr. John Lieurance   Links From Today's Show  Ultimate Cellular Reset RUNGA 436  Dr. John Lieurance | Melatonin Miracle: Supra-Physiologic Dosing, Sinus Health & Ending Inflammation 449 Hearts Wide Open | Identifying & Healing Core Wounds To Live Your Vision: Luke Storey, Cal Callahan, Dr. John Lieurance & Josh Trent Quadcast 468 Joseph Anew | Becoming an Intuitive Warrior: Developing Courage to Face Obstacles + Why Vibrant Health Starts in the Heart (RUNGA) It's All in Your Head: Endonasal Cranial Therapy by Dr. John Lieurance Melatonin: Miracle Molecule by Dr. John Lieurance Weston A. Most of us are shocked to hear the story of the connection between melatonin, inflammation, infections, and mitochondrial health and discover that much of what we do in our modern-day lives harms our melatonin production. In this episode, Dr. Lieurance and I dive into the role of melatonin plays in stress protection, anti-aging, and brain function. We talk about hormesis, discuss what depletes melatonin, and explain why those who are sympathetic dominant in our modern-day lifestyles need to be highly attuned to this crucial hormone. We get into the role of sleep, the role of deep sleep in brain health, autophagy, and autoimmunity. We touch on the gut microbiome and explain why specific populations, including shift workers, should be concerned about supporting melatonin secretion. We also discuss the role of SandMan and other products Dr. Lieurance created, including Fast Track Fast, which contains Nad, Methylene Blue, and other senolytic products. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN:   Dr. Lieurance explains the connection between the body's adaptation response to stressors and disease. What part does melatonin play in how the mitochondria in our cells respond to inflammation? Repleting lost reserves of melatonin can be helpful, provided you make some lifestyle changes.  Dr. Lieurance explains the difference between pineal melatonin and extra-pineal melatonin. Key things that cause disease in our modern civilization. Dr. Lieurance explains why he refers to melatonin as “the ultimate resilience molecule” and recommends supplementing it later in life. Studies have proven that melatonin supplementation is non-toxic. (Using a high-quality product is vital, however.) Getting enough sleep is crucial for good health.  Dr. Lieurance discusses the glymphatic system, what it does, and various things that could affect it. Dr. Lieurance talks about his Fast Track Fasting program. Why should you take melatonin after a fast? How does melatonin benefit the gut microbiome? Dr. Lieurance explains the effectiveness of suppositories as a delivery system for melatonin supplementation. What can shift workers do to support their bodies and prevent metabolic disease?  Some changes you can make to your home and bedroom to protect your sleep.  Taking melatonin internally and externally is an effective hack for healthy skin.   Bio: Dr. John A. Lieurance is a Doctor of Chiropractic, Naturopath (no license in FL), Registered Medical Assistant, and Performs Musculoskeletal Ultrasound. He has practiced in Sarasota for 24 years. God doesn't want you to use drugs to interact with the spiritual world. The reason for that is it's very easy to put your faith in being able to have God or the gods at your beck and call, being able to divine, being able to experience God but not ever truly know God, being able to experience a deep spiritual awakening but never actually go through the blood, sweat, tears, and the hard work that develops true spiritual enlightenment. - Ben Greenfield Are You Stressed Out Lately? The reason is that they are committed to making the highest quality, clean products that are free from problematic ingredients. Their beef comes from 100% grass fed cows raised entirely on natural grass pastures by family farmers right here in the USA. As a result they are healthy and happy. PaleoValley's Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks Paleovalley Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks were created to make healthy snacking easier. Their turkey sticks are made from turkeys who are allowed to live as nature intended... on organic grass pastures with plenty of sunshine, fresh air and room to exercise. The result of raising turkeys in such a natural way is a much healthier, clean protein with higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and omega-3s. Unfortunately, virtually all turkey in the USA is conventionally raised with a small portion being "free range" – a virtually meaningless term that simply means the turkeys were allowed access to the outdoors. However, most "free range" turkeys only have access to an outdoor dirt field with no pasture in sight. Their truly pasture-raised turkeys are given full access to outdoor, pesticide-free pasture with plenty of grass and insects for them to nibble on. Why prayers, like the ones he made for his gut health, are sometimes not answered directly because God knows that another purpose needs to be served,  you need something better or you need to be praying for something different. The fact that some people pray but they don't truly believe and that hinders the process. How God makes plans for us in ways that we cannot fathom and things will play out in a process that we never expected. Why we need to thank God now for the very thing that we desire compared to coming from a place of scarcity. How Ben defines wellness and living life well. Why freedom is also being vulnerable and how Ben has navigated his own shadow self and ego. 405 Tim Corcoran | Vision Quest: How To Find Your Place In The Ecology of Life, Purpose Mountain & Spiritual Courage Power Quotes From The Show Sustainable Spiritual Growth "By the nature of me knowing and acknowledging that I'm not good, that I can't do it all on my own, that I need God's help, it's incredibly humbling. To be able to be on my knees each morning and say to God, 'I give everyone and everything to you. I can't do this on my own. I can't be good on my own nor be the father and husband I want to be on my own. Although this might sound like the total polar opposite of a positive affirmation, I'm a fallen creature and I would commit great evil if I were left all alone to myself; I know it...' ...However, there is this great confidence that despite all of that, I am loved unconditionally and have been offered a rescue line that is free so that all I have to do is rely upon the grace of God and his love to be able to help me be as good as I can be. I think knowing that gives great hope because then you know that you don't have to do it all on your own. You can rely upon a higher power to be the person that you want to be in this life." - Ben Greenfield Loving the World Through Your Purpose "You were made for a reason and you just have to unlock it. You have a planned divine purpose and it's so easy to experience the "grass is always greener" syndrome especially in a world with social media. It's so simple to look at other people living their purpose; they're a doctor or an architect or a gardener and then you find yourself comparing your life to theirs but never underestimate your unique skill set and the things that come easy to you because that's how you can love the world the most. You just have to intimately become familiar with what it is that you're good at and then unashamedly run with it in the spirit of not monetizing it but loving with it. Find your purpose and know that you never have to be ashamed of that purpose." - Ben Greenfield The Appropriate Path to God "In my own plant medicine experiences, they have only ever been about light, love, and spiritual enlightenment. Many former atheists that I have spoken to that have participated in plant medicine have been able to come and know God through ceremony. Plant medicines can be a path to God but it is not THE path; it is not the appropriate path to God. The reason for that is you can go in protected with positive energy plus the right environment and know that you can trust the shaman but it's really just playing with fire... ...That's why God has warned us about pharmakeia in the bible because he knew how attractive it was and how much of a train wreck it would cause in the end or how much of a displaced trust it would cause for people to put their faith and reliance upon how they could become spiritually enlightened in anything other than the free act of just leaving their burden at the foot of the cross, thanking Jesus, and living in grace." - Ben Greenfield Links From Today's Show  Listen to: Ben Greenfield Life Podcasts Why I Am No Longer Going to Be Using Plant Medicines: Part 1 - The Big Problem With “Plant Medicines” Part 2 - Why I Am No Longer Going to Be Using Plant Medicines: The Big Problem With “Plant Medicines” CHEK Institute How To Eat, Move, & Be Healthy by Paul Chek Paul Chek on Wellness + Wisdom Podcast RUNGA  Cover Story | Power Trip by New York Magazine Onnit 123 Aubrey Marcus – Own The Day 196. This is a podcast that I recorded about two years ago for https://bengreenfieldlife.com/podcast/self-quantification-podcasts/what-is-heart-rate-variability/ (Ben Greenfield). It's a solosode that I did for him all on HRV. Now this podcast is so incredibly dense and long. We're talking about a deep dive into all things, HRV. We're going to talk about all the different metrics of HRV. We're going to get into depth in terms of psychophysiology, what produces HRV. There are a couple caveats before we jump into this podcast. There are some things that I've changed my mind on. I recorded this two years ago, and guess what? The science changes and let me explain the two things. Number one is I provide an entire section on normative ranges. I'm actually going to give you permission to skip it. The reason is because I am coming more and more to the conclusion that those normative range bases that I presented are just there as a novelty. They're just there as something that if you're curious, you've got it. Remember we're supposed to only self compare as opposed to normatively compare, but I spend a really long time talking about these normative comparisons and providing frameworks for those based on age among other things. You can listen to it, but feel free to skip it. If you already know that it's basically pointless to compare yourself normatively, but if you're interested in where you fall by all means like, go for it. The second thing is that I utilize the term autonomic balance or HRV balance a lot in this podcast. The science has already has also concluded that terminology probably isn't the best terminology. On one hand, you can say yes, there is a level of autonomic balance that happens. But on the other hand, that's way more of an oversimplification of what actually happens. What I want you to framework this in, when you hear it on the podcast, is that we should think about our nervous system and HRV in terms of double footed driving. Whereas we don't want just have a foot on the gas pedal, which is the sympathetic nervous system, and then we slam on the brakes. We can actually drive with both feet and modulate those. And the point is not to engage in balance. I always come back to the whole point of HRV biofeedback and training is to train autonomic control. You can tell your sympathetic nervous system what you want to do with it at any given time, as well as your parasympathetic nervous system that comes from training. That's why we created Hanu. It's why you have this system, hopefully in your hands, or you're using it right now is because it is intended to train autonomic control. So those are the two key points that I wanted to mention. Again, I'm excited to be able to bring you this really deep dive. And I have another podcast coming from the Ben Greenfield podcast that's all about, Hanu. Not just a deep dive in HRV, but Ben actually asks me all about Hanu, the company and mission. So be on the lookout for that one coming very soon. Last thing before we jump in, just to remind you, if you have already pre-ordered, it's time for you to complete that order. So look out for that email so you can complete it and we can send it to you in August. And also too, if you want to be a pre-order customer and get your device in August, use coupon code POD40. That will take the price from $299 down to a $180. And then after that, it only costs you $12 per month. Brad's Diet, Part 2: From Primal To Keto To Carnivore-ish

The B.rad Podcast

Part 2 begins with a quick recap of what I discussed in Part 1 (childhood eating habits, what led me to embrace the primal / ancestral diet in 2008 with Mark Sisson and The Primal Blueprint, the deep immersion into keto and the publication of The Keto Reset Diet in 2017) and then picks up with the story of the major awakening I had in regards to food a few years ago. I spend some time in this episode summarizing the rationale for and the benefits of an animal-based diet, including second guessing the deeply ingrained idea many people have that colorful fresh produce is the de facto centerpiece of healthy eating as I explain the science behind how these plant toxins affect your body. You'll hear about the advent of the Carnivore movement as I discuss how the message from leaders like Dr. Paul Saladino and Dr. Shawn Baker changed my life and challenged my fixed and rigid dietary beliefs, especially this May 2019 podcast episode with Dr. Paul Saladino on Ben Greenfield Fitness where he seemed to blow Ben's mind—well, he blew my mind too, so we met and hung out in LA and did a podcast, and then I took him to meet Mark Sisson to do another podcast—as you'll hear, he seemed to blow Sisson's mind too (yes, Sisson of the daily “Big-Ass Salad”!). In this episode, you'll learn all about plant toxins—a variety of chemicals, proteins, and acids that can damage our sensitive digestive systems, upset our delicate hormonal balance, and prevent the release of critical neurotransmitters. I share a list of which foods to avoid (including why roots, leaves, stems, and seeds are the worst offenders) and talk about the way lectins affect the body (like gluten, lectins are widely recognized natural plant toxins that virtually everyone is sensitive to). I also talk a little bit about gluten and how it inflames the digestive tract and triggers an autoimmune response, explain how phytic acid / phytates work in the body (by binding to minerals and inhibiting digestion), and reveal which specific foods have 200 times more estrogen than other foods. We also touch on the issue of oxalates and glycoalkaloids (defined as neurotoxin enzyme inhibitors that impact nervous system function) and talk about sulforaphane (which can inhibit the internal antioxidant system and promote cell death) and isothiocyanates, which can seriously mess with your thyroid health. I also explain the effects that tannins, photosensitizers, salicylates, flavonoids, as well as cyanogenic glycosides, (yes, what makes cyanide!) have on the body. If you are like me and haven't been suffering from any acute health conditions, then you probably felt the same way I did before going carnivore-ish, which was, what's the point of being super strict with your restriction of plant foods if you already think you feel fine? However, as you'll learn during this show, there are tons of benefits to eliminating plant toxins—and one added benefit is an increased emphasis on the highest-quality animal foods, which ideally includes a lot more organ meats.  Finally, if you're looking to lose weight, the story of how my joint commitment to go carnivoreandfast until 12 noon enabled me to quickly drop eight pounds of excess body fat in exactly three months will probably pique your interest. I attribute this quick and easy success to the natural focus and discipline engendered by my morning fast and narrowed menu options; we forget how easy it is to get derailed from our goals and best intentions by freedom, abundant choice, and the indulgent and decadent cultural influences we are surrounded by daily. And when we are thrown into the mix of daily life without unwavering rules and guidelines in place, it's easy to experience decision fatigue, depletion of will power, and a consequent unraveling of our best-laid plans. Hopefully my dietary journey and experience with the freedom found within the seemingly narrow confines of carnivore will inspire you to try it out for yourself!    TIMESTAMPS:  If you were born before 1950, you had the advantage of more fresh home-cooked meals. Check it outhttps://www.hanuhealth.com/blog/ ( here). Listener Q&A: Mitch asks: I've always had a low HRV and I've heard it can indicate that I'm at risk for a heart attack. What can I do in order to help with this?...10:15 In the answer, Jay discusses: I want to dispel this notion that someone has a "low HRV," because this is all very relative. HRV for the most part is not a normative, comparative piece of biometric data. Low and high HRV only has meaning in relationship to your own individual base line HRV. Every person's normative range for HRV varies. HRV is just a metric among other metrics to determine heart health. HRV is not a good indicator for risk for heart attack alone. There are many other great metrics to look at for that purpose. To help, be sure you understand what HRV is used for and what it is not used for. HRV is a mechanism for autonomic control, so you can learn to use it well for self-regulation. Normal is better in the field of HRV Cindy asks: I have been working on trying to be more active with breathwork and HRV training. I think Hanu will be a huge source of encouragement and accountability for me. (We love to hear that Cindy!) Where is a good place to start in this part of my journey?...20:10 In the answer, Jay discusses: Where do we start in creating habits? James Clear wrote a book called, "Atomic Habits," and a key concept is to act like who you want to become. Small changes, even changing your language, can make large impacts and really help with habit formation. Research is clear that the greatest benefit of HRV work comes from 25 minutes twice a day. This is difficult to jump into right away. Begin with identity language such as, "I am someone who works on my stress resilience." "I am a breathwork practitioner." "I am an HRV biofeedback practitioner." Start small. It can be 30 seconds to a minute each day to start. Hanu will definitely be a great help for encouragement and accountability. As you get the feedback, work on extended your time frames on your new habits and go from there. Jay has formed a habit during his commute using the Hanu Health app and breathwork with the https://www.consciousbreathing.com/product/relaxator/ (Relaxator). Paul asks: What do you think about devices that claim to raise your HRV? Is that possible?...28:50 In the answer, Jay discusses: He is board certified in this area, and his approach is, "Prove it." Show me the data. Hanu is built on HRV biofeedback research that has been established for decades. The underlying function of HRV biofeedback is to engage the parasympathetic nervous system, and there are researched benefits for many health concerns. Be wary and skeptical if the claims say your HRV will increase passively. It is likely click bait. That's a wrap!
