We've talked to each other quite a bit how much of an honor it would be to have George Sellios on our podcast and we (Todd & Brett) have both considered it one of our biggest bucket list guests to have on. This week we had the pleasure to sit down for a good hour+ conversation with George about his introduction into model railroading and history of what he's most well known for, his modeling! Join us this week as George Sellios takes us on a journey through his story from starting out with a basic train set as a kid, to his first "layout" which was a 2x4 he had in his room, all the way to what he's working on currently with the newest addition to his Franklin & South Manchester layout. George also drives us through the story of how Fine Scale Miniatures became one of the most iconic and highly regarded kits and castings to get your hands on. As we all know, even to this day, being able to work on one of these yellow box kits is something very special.  This episode was a load of fun and I know my dad and I both spent moments just soaking in what George had to say and just loved hearing his stories and techniques! The contest will resume NEXT week, we wanted to keep this episode special without any interference from anything else. It just felt right that way. Enjoy the content this week and we hope you love the discussion! Note: The episode artwork is a photo taken by Brett Wiley of George's Franklin & South Manchester while on a visit and tour of the incredible layout.

Model Building Toolbox Talk #3: The Use of Mirrors in Tunnels and underpasses

Our recent visit to see George Sellios' Franklin & South Manchester brought a TON and I mean a TON of ideas into my sights that I want to attempt on our own layout.  Now, I am realistic and I know that it will never look like what we saw this weekend and any attempt to do so will either end up looking like a blatant copy OR will never be what his layout is. But what I can do is take his techniques and apply them to our own layout in our own way to make our personal layout better. So my first takeaway is going to be the use of mirrors in a couple tunnels within our city. I got a couple cheap makeup mirrors from the local dollar store and will pop them out to use for the tunnels/underpass scenes.  I want to challenge our listeners to try to do the same thing! Get some cheap mirrors like I did (because there's no sense paying more than a dollar or two for them) and giving this a shot! OR if you have done this already, send us some pics! Note: The cover photo and photo in the show description were taken by Brett Wiley (myself) and are the original work of George Sellios on his Franklin & South Manchester Layout.

In this episode, Jon and Tim interview three ultra-marathon runners from Carlisle, Pa. They all have their own unique story to tell about how they got into ultra running. But don't worry, this episode isn't about proper fueling strategies, the right footwear, or proper mechanics. So if you aren't a runner, you'll still learn something. They talk about the mental game of preparing for a major life event, the grind in the middle of it all, and the outcome of all the hard work. Jen Gregoris is a two time 100 mile ultra-marathon finisher, as well as a teacher, mother, and wife. Read Jen's full race recap here. And follow along with her running journeys on facebook here. Brett Wiley just completed is first 100 miler and is also a father, husband, as well as running his own podcast. It's called the Bench Time podcast and you can find that at HO Scale Customs. You can also read Brett's complete race recap here. Linda Reilly ran in the Pinhoti 100 mile ultra-marathon recently and has the amazing opportunity to work at one of the best local running stores around. She runs every race for a purpose and for people. It's all about bringing awareness to various causes. She will be sharing about the dramatic ending to her 100 miles. All three of them ran this last 100 mile race for a cause. They will be sharing about that and what it means to them and their families. They are still accepting donations to the charity that they are supporting. PLEASE consider it! You can find that here. Also, if you want your children to listen, it's mostly clean. We might have said "shit" once or twice. Rules say we have to put the "E" for even stuff like that.

Bench Time #47: Painting with a sea sponge, and Scenic detail around your structures

TGIF fellow fine scale freaks!!  This week on episode 47 of The Bench Time Podcast, Brett shares his techniques for painting structures with a sea sponge to give an aging, peeling paint, weathered effect.  Then Todd and Brett discuss how they scenic out a structure once it is placed on the layout and how to focus on just that small area of concentration to create a scene.  It is one thing to just build the structure and add details directly to it, but it is an entirely different and at times more or equally fun to create the scene separate from the building in its immediate area to tell a story about the structure.  It’s definition of purpose.  That structure isn’t done unitl you fill in the region around it!We also take questions from our listening patrons about modeling issues they have.  So get to work on that bench this weekend, fill that coffee cup up (or crack a cold one) and listen to our latest episode as you do your thing!  And have a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving from Todd and Brett Wiley of HO Scale Customs and the Bench Time Podcast!  Where Brett get's his sponges: Natural Sea Sponges for ArtistsJoin our Patreon Group Here
