This week, Christina P sits down with horror icon Doug Bradley, the legendary actor behind Hellraiser's Pinhead, for a conversation that's equal parts creepy, funny, and surprisingly tender. Doug dives into the origins of Pinhead's terrifying look, the philosophy behind horror villains, and what it's like when strangers recognize him as the guy who tormented their nightmares.Christina presses Doug on whether BDSM aesthetics became mainstream thanks to Cenobites, and if he's ever had to explain his career choices at awkward family dinners. Doug also shares behind-the-scenes stories of low-budget chaos, midnight makeup chair marathons, and how becoming a horror icon changed his life in ways he never saw coming. With frequent detours into absurdity Doug also proves he's not just a master of horror—he's got comedy chops too. This episode is a once-in-a-lifetime crossover of YMH filth and horror royalty...missing it would be a waste of good suffering. We're combining the news and headlines of Steve Christy's Bulletin Board with Now Showing to cover the gamut of the latest and greatest in Horror media. For the inaugural installment, we're talking the first official Jason Voorhees appearance since 2009 (see: Sweet Revenge), FX's Alien: Earth, the new Hellraiser game, Gremlins 3, and more. Then, we'll discuss two new films (Together, Weapons) and two oldies (Copycat, Angel Heart). Let us know what you think in the comments!
Welcome to Gehenna: It's Like Hell, but With Worse Real Estate and More Bureaucracy” Announcement: Missed an episode? Repent your sins and redeem yourself on YouTube, where archived episodes of The RPGBOT.Podcast are now available for your listening pleasure. Come for the laughs, stay for the existential dread. Show Notes – Episode Title: “Gehenna: Evil Slopes and Infernal Bureaucracy” Summary: In this infernal episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the hosts return from Gen Con only to plummet straight into the burning basalt slopes of Gehenna—a plane so depressing it makes the Shadowfell look like Disneyland. They dive into the lore of the plane's inhospitable geography, wildly impractical city design, and the kinds of inhabitants that only a sadistic game designer could love. Along the way, we meet Nymicry (a city that wants to eat you), the Tower of Arcana (where bureaucracy is tattooed into your skin), and the city of Portent (built on a corpse, because why not). The hosts explore the goddess of torture, debate whether the Rogue class needs therapy or just a rebrand, and try to answer the ultimate question: “Why would anyone go to Gehenna… on purpose?” 2014 Dungeon Master's Guide (affiliate link) 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide (affiliate link) Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes (affiliate link) Forgotten Realms Wiki - Gehenna Ghengis Sean RPGBOT.Podcast Episodes The Abyss Archeron Arcadia The Beastlands Bytopia Carceri Celestia The Ethereal Plane The Feywild Hell Part 1 Hell Part 2 Limbo Mechanus Pandemonium The Shadowfell Key Takeaways: Gehenna is the DMV of the multiverse—agonizingly slow, unbearably hostile, and absolutely full of paperwork. Gen Con was great! Unlike Gehenna, which is a hostile volcanic rockslide with a bad attitude. Every layer of Gehenna slopes downward, because gravity hates you too. Nymicry is a mimic the size of a city, proving once again that your GM can be too creative. The Tower of Arcana is where contracts are etched into skin, because parchment is for cowards. Portent is a yugoloth-shaped city with a throne that whispers spoilers into your ear. The only native species are bar guests, who seem suspiciously like people who got stuck at Gen Con after dark. Leviatar, the goddess of torture, rules with cruelty and creativity—think “Hellraiser meets HR onboarding.” Torch is a city where crime is a feature, not a bug. Bonus: there's a blood swamp. Rogues are cool, but maybe need a PR team—they're mechanically solid but struggle to stand out. Gehenna is full of flavor, if your flavor is emotional suffering and lava. At RPGBOT.net and The RPGBOT.Podcast, our brains are made of real meat. We are not the fever dream of a rogue algorithm trying to understand humor. We are, tragically, real people—with dice in one hand and sarcasm in the other. RPGBOT: It's Soylent Green for the RPG crowd—made from actual humans, not generative AI. Want more planar deep-dives, class analysis, and volcanic despair? Visit RPGBOT.net for guides, breakdowns, and the kind of nerdy brilliance that even Gehenna can't melt. On this episode of Talking Strange, host Aaron Sagers chats with writer and producer Christopher Monfette, the creative mind behind TexArcanum, the new supernatural western comic from Dark Horse Comics. TexArcanum is a genre-bending tale of cowboy arcanist Avery Belle, who finds himself caught in a supernatural land feud teeming with ghosts, demons, gods, and forgotten folklore. Think Yellowstone meets The X-Files, with a splash of Elmore Leonard grit and Stephen King dread. Monfette shares how his background as an entertainment journalist for IGN and G4 eventually led him to comic writing — including his collaboration with Clive Barker on Hellraiser — and how his TV work on 12 Monkeys, Star Trek: Picard, and the upcoming Vision series from Marvel has shaped his unique narrative voice. We also dig into the horror-noir Americana of TexArcanum, its influences from folklore, pop culture, and myth, and what it means to write a cowboy steeped in arcane mysteries in a haunted Heartland. TexArcanum #1 is available now from Dark Horse Comics. Question: Would you rather be an Occult Detective or Supernatural Monster Hunter? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Did someone say “Craig Sheffer back-to-back shows?” Because you bet your tush it's a Craig Sheffer back-to-back show this week as we raise some H - E - double hockey sticks with 2000's film noir HELLRAISER: INFERNO. This is actually a double two-fer, as we have now discussed both of Scott Derrickson's directorial offerings in 2000, lest we forget about URBAN LEGENDS: FINAL CUT, which is ironically one month older than INFERNO. He was certainly busy at the beginning of the new millennium, but at what cost? Is this a good Hellraiser sequel? Is this really even a Hellraiser sequel? You can find a lot of opinions on the internet about it, and here we are with our own unsolicited review. What's your pleasure? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Video games and movies seem like a perfect fit. For whatever reasons, adaptations done in either direction do not seem to work so well. Over the past few years, there have been a number of familiar horror franchises turned into games. They have been multiplayer affairs with limited shelf life. What makes the Hellraiser video game different? We really enjoyed In a Violent Nature. It was unique, had some great kills, and had an excellent big bad. It left itself open for a sequel, but is that a good thing? Can a movie shot in this style sustain a franchise or should it be left alone? We talk about the next installment and talk about our reservations.Shaw Studios is responsible for some of the most influential and well-regarded kung-fu movies of all time. Even those who have never seen any of their films are likely familiar with names like Five Deadly Venoms and The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. The Battle Wizard definitely belongs on that list.Awesome martial arts fights. A villain with extending metal legs that can break rock. Limb cutting lasers. A protagonist that eats exotic animals. The Battle Wizard has it all and then some. And in between all the wackiness it has a surprisingly well written will they/won't they love story that will gross you out until it warms your heart.Terrestrial has a lot going for it. Its director helmed Hot Tub Time Machine and co-wrote Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity. The cast includes Jermaine Fowler and Pauline Chalamet. The premise is a fan favorite that has been used in screwball comedies and sitcoms. So, what happened? The writing is surprisingly dodgy. There is a science fiction aspect that does nothing to the story but seems like it is supposed to be something very important. Even worse, the characters are very poorly done. Most tellingly, Terrestrial goes out of its way to turn the main character into an awful person that is impossible to get behind. Which makes the movie impossible to enjoy. Better grab something to write with before you hit play on this one. In this extra-long episode, we dive into a variety of horror sub-genres and each pick a title that we think defines that category. Not necessarily the best film, but one that captures the essence of the sub-genre in a meaningful way. To help us take on this ridiculously huge (but fun) challenge, we've brought back Aaron Christensen—aka Dr. AC—to join the conversation. If you're new to the genre, this one's especially for you. If you've been around a few years (or decades) we think the conversation is still worth your time, and we hope that you consider giving a few of these a revisit. Time to start that new watchlist! All set? Notes ready? Coffee or energy drink in hand? Then hit play! “This is a Spike TV movie, right?” - Eric On this week's episode, the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza gets down and dirty for the all-or-nothing days as we chat about Robert Rodriguez's still totally wild comic translation, Sin City! Thankfully, folks, this movie still looks totally rad! How eerie is Elijah Wood as Kevin? Even with as fun a ride as this is, did we really need to adapt every bit of the Miller sleaze vibes? Will Rodriguez ever get his edge back? How great is Mickey Rourke in this movie? Was having three different musicians do three different scores a good idea? Should the Hartigan story have been cut in two or should the film have been left as the triptych with the Hartnett character as the bookend? PLUS: Kurt Russell and the arctic crew from The Thing all check to see who's The Thing by doing the asparagus pee test! Sin City stars Bruce Willis, Clive Owen, Mickey Rourke, Josh Hartnett, Rosario Dawson, Benicio Del Toro, Michael Clarke Duncan, Carla Gugino, Rutger Hauer, Jaime King, Tommy Flanagan, Nick Offerman, Marley Shelton, Nick Stahl, Elijah Wood, Devon Aoki, Alexis Bledel, Powers Boothe, and the late, great Michael Madsen as Bob; directed by Robert Rodriguez. [EDITOR'S NOTE: We recorded this episode on June 18, several weeks before we lost Michael Madsen. The guy was a total legend, a singular performer who gave us so many memorable film appearances that we've loved and quoted a ton over the years. We'll miss the guy, gone way, way too soon. — Andrew] Our three-night, six-show residency at the Oxford Comedy Festival starts THIS FRIDAY, July 18th! Send us a textFew faces are as hauntingly iconic in the world of horror as that of Pinhead, the demonic leader of the Cenobites in Clive Barker's Hellraiser universe. And while Doug Bradley originally brought the role to life, it was Paul T. Taylor who dared to don the pins in 2018's Hellraiser: Judgment, ushering the legendary villain into a new chapter for a new generation of horror fans. His performance captured the cold intellect, sadistic elegance, and terrifying calm that fans had come to love—earning him a place in the horror pantheon. But Taylor's talents extend far beyond the hellish dimension of the Hellraiser universe. With roles in films like Sin City, Super, and various television and stage productions, Taylor is a versatile performer who has spent decades sharpening his craft across genres. Still, it's his role as Pinhead that connected him deeply to the horror culture community—a passionate, loyal audience that celebrates practical effects, psychological depth, and the actors who bring monsters to life.Embraced by the Horror CommunityWithin the horror scene, Taylor is more than an actor—he's become a fan-favorite guest at conventions, signings, and horror-themed events around the country. He embraces the community with the same authenticity that fans bring to him, never shying away from the impact his portrayal of Pinhead has had. Whether it's discussing the philosophy of horror, the craftsmanship of effects work, or just sharing behind-the-scenes stories, Taylor brings heart and humility to a genre that's often misunderstood by outsiders. He's set to make an appearance at one of Missouri's biggest pop culture events, the ToyMan Show in St. Charles, MO, on Sunday, July 13, 2025. This massive gathering of collectors, fans, cosplayers, and creators will give attendees a chance to meet Paul T. Taylor in person—snap photos, get autographs, and dive into the dark lore of Hellraiser and beyond. He'll join other celebrity guests at this two-level celebration of all things toys, comics, horror, and nostalgia. The Barn Appearance: A Conversation with Tippy JoAhead of the ToyMan Show, Taylor sat down with Chad Winch and Brett Wiley of The Tippy Jo Show on The Barn Podcast Network for an exclusive and wide-ranging conversation. The episode dives deep into Taylor's time preparing for the role of Pinhead, his experiences on set, and his thoughts on how the horror genre has evolved over time. With genuine humor and insight, Taylor opens up about what it's like to become part of such a beloved (and feared) franchise—and what the future holds for him both inside and outside the horror realm.Whether you know him as Pinhead, a performer from Sin City, or simply as a devotewww.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. “That image should not be in the movie!” - Chris on the drool shot On this week's episode, the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza goes to Family Film Country as we chat about the 90's dog classic, Beethoven! How much of a knock-off Wet Bandits are Stanley Tucci and Olive Platt in this? Does Grodin's character think he's gonna take over the world with this air freshener company? Why is a plot point in this children's film a dog needing to be shot in the head? And did Beethoven inadvertently save this family from total annihilation? PLUS: Steve recalls a tale of elevator-related horror! Beethoven stars Charles Grodin, Bonnie Hunt, Dean Jones, Nicholle Tom, Christopher Castile, Sarah Rose Karr, Olive Platt, Stanely Tucci, David Duchovny, Patricia Heaton, Laurel Cronin, O-Lan Jones, and Chris the Dog as Beethoven; directed by Brian Levant. Clive Barker's Nightbreed is the cinematic equivalent of an overstuffed trunk at a goth rave—wildly imaginative, beautifully adorned, and totally incapable of deciding what it wants to be. Packed with jaw-dropping creature designs, luscious makeup work, and a thrilling Danny Elfman score that pulses with dark fantasy energy, Nightbreed sets the table for a full-course horror feast. Unfortunately, the meal comes out half-cooked thanks to tonal confusion and a protagonist who drifts through the story like a half-deflated pool float. Adapted from Barker's novella Cabal, the film tells the story of Boone, a tormented man drawn to the subterranean world of Midian—a hidden city of monsters, outcasts, and literal night-breed. It wants to be a dark fairytale, a slasher, and a misunderstood superhero origin story all at once. And it kind of is... but not in a good way. Serial killer subplots rub awkwardly against messianic chosen-one arcs, while police shootouts interrupt poetic monster mythology. It's like watching Hellraiser crash into X-Men, then take a wrong turn through Copland. Still, if you're a fan of practical effects and monster lore, Nightbreed is a visual banquet. The creature makeup is top-tier—each Nightbreed has their own unique look and feel, some terrifying, some oddly beautiful, all memorable. The world of Midian is fascinating in concept, with real potential to launch a whole franchise of supernatural antiheroes (which it almost did). But anchoring all of this is Boone—a man so passive and charisma-deprived it's a wonder the monsters didn't just vote for someone else. His transformation from haunted man to reluctant savior is so subdued it barely registers, making it hard to care when the bullets start flying and Midian burns. Nightbreed deserves credit for aiming high, but its soaring ambitions are clipped by structural chaos and a limp lead. Watch it for the monsters, the mood, and the Elfman score—but don't expect a satisfying story to match the spectacle.

“The four of us are on a one-way bullet train to Stupid City” - Andrew on covering this movie for the show On this week's episode, the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza does indeed head to Stupid City as we're talking about the really silly, really short, sci-fi thriller, Lucy! How totally great is Choi Min-sik in this movie? Precisely how many seconds is Morgan Freeman standing on-screen? When Lucy gets so smart, why is she still unable to understand and speak multiple languages? With the action and fight choreography being as fun as they are, couldn't we have gotten more of that and less of Morgan Freeman giving that lecture? And do people at the front desk of a Westin care if you're going to eat at the hotel restaurant? PLUS: Lucy visits all the best Times Square chain restaurants and attractions! Lucy stars Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, Amr Waked, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Pilou Asbaek, Lio Tipton, and Choi Min-sik as Mr. Jang; directed by Luc Besson. “It's the only zombie movie that's appropriate to watch at a July 4th barbecue! - Andrew On this week's show, the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza gets a little spooktacular as we chat about the super-fun, summer-set zombie flick, The Return of the Living Dead! Why does this Skeleton Warehouse have to be open until 10PM on a holiday weekend? How great is that half-dog puppet? Isn't it great how Russo and Romero split up their zombie sequels so we could get both sides of their shared zombie vision? Why does Frank use that entire roll of paper towels like it's a sponge? And word to the wise, never hang out in an eerie cemetery after dark! PLUS: James Karen welcomes all zombie punks to Pathmark! The Return of the Living Dead stars Clu Gulager, James Karen, Don Calfa, Beverly Randolph, John Philbin, Jewel Shepard, Miguel A. Feeling like you're in a maze, especially in these apocalyptic times? How about I make an Astro Gnosis lecture public that will get you out of this cosmic Overlook Hotel labyrinth? Steven Snider unravels the deep symbolism behind the "Oubliette" — a recurring labyrinthine motif in art, literature, psychology, and pop culture. Inspired by haunting dreams and shaped by centuries of philosophical and artistic expression, let's journey through the architecture of the subconscious and the mythic roots of infinite reality. From Piranesi's impossible prisons to Borges' quantum labyrinths and Hellraiser's mechanical horrors, Steven traces the Oubliette as a dark mirror of the human psyche. He weaves connections between surreal art, psychoanalysis, and mathematical paradoxes to explore how this ancient structure may be embedded in our very consciousness. Of course, he covers M. C. Why does the movie take so long to get to New York City? What in the hell were they thinking with the multiple crotch grab “gags”? Who packs a sexy bathing suit for a hike through the bush? Does the script confirm that Mick has magic powers? Wouldn't someone try to kill Mick after he wastes all that coke at the party? And what in the WORLD are we doing being barefoot in the subway at the end?! PLUS: Be on the lookout for the American Crocodile Dundee, Alligator Johnson! “There're piles of skulls, which of course I appreciate” - Steve on the set design On this week's episode, Totally Cool Awesome 80s Month and the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza pay tribute to the late, great Val Kilmer with a convo about the super-fun Ron Howard fantasy flick, Willow! How amazing are Warwick and Val together on screen? Isn't it refreshing that Davis was just allowed to put a shirt on and be this character, without getting covered in prosthetics or whatever else? Wouldn't things have been just fine in this movie without the Brownies flying around? And how amazing is that two-headed Siskel & Ebert monster? PLUS: Queen Bavmorda accidentally touches The Ooze and becomes Super Bavmorda (and is also played by Kevin Nash)! Willow stars Warwick Davis, Val Kilmer, Joanne Whalley, Jean Marsh, Patricia Hayes, Billy Barty, Mark Northover, Pat Roach, David Sternberg, Phil Fondacaro, Tony Cox, Kevin Pollak, Rick Overton, and Gavan O'Herlihy as Airk; directed by Ron Howard. First up, we're talking about the stupidly-titled Rambo: First Blood Part II! How funny is it that this movie pulls a complete 180 on the philosophy of the first film? How great is Sly's hair in this one? Couldn't they have had a few more action scenes with Martin Kove? How wild is it that Predator completely ripped off the Rambo covered in mud bit? And why didn't Murdock get a rockin' death in this? PLUS: Fellow veterans, Bebop and Rocksteady, meet John Rambo! Rambo: First Blood Part II stars Sylvester Stallone, Richard Crenna, Charles Napier, Steven Berkoff, Julia Nickson, George Cheung, and Martin Kove as Ericson; directed by George P. Cosmatos.
