What is peak horror comedy? One could make the argument that this week's film ascended near the top and became the finest genre spoof of the new century. That's right, we're taking a trip to little ol' place where we can get together… and die for the amusement of the Elder Gods - 2012's THE CABIN IN THE WOODS!! Along the way, we dig into the haunted basement of the film's origins, unpack how the movie explains bad horror movie character archetypes, make out with a moose, and celebrate Johnny Friday or whatever his name was! All this, plus we revisit Count Orlon's time management issues, bloody blowholes, phantom virgins, off brand Cenobites, and the most complicated edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure ever attempted!! So come on in, put up your feet, breathe in the pheromones and intoxicants, and stay awhile - won't you? Listen to Pretty in Podcast's excellent National Lampoon's Class Reunion episode. Every Friday is FRIDAY NIGHT FIENDS during HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST and today we're discussing the follow up to one of our favorite horror movies. Kirsty, Julia, Pinhead and the Lament Configuration are back and hotter than ever and we're gonna be spending a lot of time down under under the gaze of Leviathan. We're talking “HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER 2” from 1988 directed by Tony Randel and starring Claire Higgins, Ashley Laurence and Doug Bradley. The sultry Julia returns with the help of a sick doctor and she's leading souls into hell for her master, LEVIATHAN. Kirsty's brave ass wants to go and rescue her father and the Cenobites return with grandiose plans of torture. All the gore and eroticism work almost as well as in the original and then the last 30 minutes happen. Why did they go out like that? Still looks demented and cool but does the good outweigh the underwhelming? Hear us tell it. This movie definitely has its fans but boy does word of mouth drop off hard for the franchise after this one. Dust off your illegal VHS tapes and be prepared to write a strongly worded letter to Points of View because we're back with the second part of our ‘Banned by the Beeb' two-parter looking at three more episodes of Star Trek that suffered the wrath of British censorship. We're back with three episodes, the final two banned TOS episodes, starting with ‘The Empath' where William Shatner has to do some Dark Place style slow-motion running and McCoy definitely violates some medical practices as our latest butt-headed aliens the Vians pull out the chains and then with ‘Whom Gods Destroy' where Kirk and Spock are repeatedly taken in and out of rooms and forced to ask chess questions by a mad-man in mismatched boots. Which episode is more controversial- SHOOT THEM BOTH, SPOCK! But after that, the fun and hijinks go away with ‘The High Ground,' a TNG episode banned due to a line about Irish Reunification and Miles and Charlie find themselves having to ponder the age old question, can a show written, produced and made by Americans talk about how fighting for independence against oppressive colonialist Imperialism and somehow seem to conclude that it's a bad thing, actually. Or, as Miles' wife Reanna said as she watched the episode with him ‘Gosh, this has aged well.' There are some things we can try to make fun, not everything. Episodes discussed: ‘The Empath' (11:37), ‘Whom Gods Destroy' (42:59) and ‘The High Ground (01:08:30) Talking Points Include: THEY PUT BABY SUPERMAN IN A MICROWAVE?!?!, Judge Dredd killing the Jolly Green Giant, dialogue censorship in American comics, Miles' 12th Wedding Anniversary is a good excuse to go off on how amazing the film ‘Lifeforce' is, Alex Garland's ‘Annihilation,' Patrick Stewart's first movie kiss, Charlie has a physical subscript to 2000 AD (Lucky Bugger, Miles has to do digital), 2000 AD and Judge Dredd Megazine, SHIFT Magazine that Charlie has a story in, Alan Moore's ‘The March of the Sinister Ducks,' Miles tries his empathic powers, the three different alien physicalities of Star Trek, DeForest Kelley's favourite episode, Hurt/Comfort fanfic, sometimes you can tell that the cast know the show's getting cancelled soon, the Cenobites would hate dealing with Starfleet, old make-up techniques, how the characters have become less real over the first three seasons, William Shatner doing his slow-mo running, the British hatred of Morris Men and all they stand for, how a lot of modern comedy lacks actual stakes, The Beatles vs. The Rolling Stones, Jeff knows what he's done, Yvonne Craig (TV's Batgirl) as a dancing girl, Mental Health doesn't work how Star Trek thinks it works, lots of shouting, oh God more Am-Dram, Legion of Super-Heroes, did Wayne's World ruin the name ‘Garth?' Double-Nerve Pinch, ‘Pointy-Eared Bum Head!'Garth's really bad Glam-Rock band, did the BBC have a point? Power-Mad-Starbucks Supervisors, padding, Kylie Minogue, Michael Bolton, where do Americans know Kylie Monogue from? the Troubles, the IRA's attempt to assassinate Thatcher in the 80s (in Miles and Charlie's hometown no less!), Picard is unable to answer the important question ‘What is terrorism?' and ‘but doesn't terrorism occasionally work for good outcomes?', does Magneto have a point? Imperialism, Colonialism, Centrists are the worst, it really stops being fun talking points for The High Ground, the actor playing Finn seems to be going for a Jack Nicholson-esque drawl to sound dangerous, but he just sounds utterly checked out. And sometimes Star Trek. Pedants Corner: ‘Neighbours' was a long running Australian soap-opera that would air in the 5:30 timeslot Monday-Friday evening BBC 1 slot after the kids' programming ended and before the 6 o'Clock News. Such a spectacular and talented actor! This interview was fun. Okay, Simon made the interview extremely fun because is such a wild card! I absolutely loved everything he said in this interview, and I did not want to miss a single word. With Hellraiser being my second favorite franchise and what Clive Barker poured into it, I will always be a Hellraiser fanboy. The special effects and makeup are riveting and unforgettable; from the Cenobites costumes and makeup to the practical special effects (and somewhat cheesy) but it's the best from that decade alone and it's certainly unmatched. Behind the mind of Clive Barker comes the Cenobites who thrive on your pain and desires at the same time, it's truly a franchise that cannot be touched by others. I am extremely glad that I had my Pinhead mask signed by the cast at the most recent Monster Mania Convention in Cherry Hill this past August. Truly a memory that I will never forget! Easter Egg: Simon and I have confirmed that you can see his costume, Butterball featured in “Halloween H20: 20 Years Later” which makes him a part of two franchises.

In Morocco, Frank Cotton, a hedonist, buys a puzzle box said to open the door to a realm of otherworldly pleasure. At home in his bare attic, Frank solves the puzzle and hooked chains emerge, tearing him apart. A black-robed figure resets the puzzle and the room is restored back to normal. Later, Frank's brother Larry moves into the same house. He intends to rebuild his relationship with his second wife, Julia. Larry is unaware that Julia had an affair with his brother Frank before her marriage to him. When Larry accidentally cuts his hand moving furniture, his blood drips on the attic floor and resurrects Frank in a ghoulish form. Julia later finds Frank; still obsessed with him, she agrees to help restore his body, so they can run away together. Julia picks up men in bars and brings them back to the attic, where she mortally wounds them. Frank then drains their life, which regenerates his body. Frank explains to Julia that, having exhausted all sensory experiences, he sought out the puzzle box, which was supposed to provide access to a realm of new carnal pleasures. When the puzzle was solved, the "Cenobites" came to subject him to extreme sadomasochism. Kirsty, Larry's teenage daughter and Frank's niece, sees Julia bringing a man to the house and follows her to the attic, where she finds Frank. She evades Frank and escapes with the puzzle box, collapsing shortly after. Awakening in a hospital, Kirsty solves the box out of curiosity, and unknowingly summons the Cenobites and a monster called the Engineer, which she narrowly escapes from. The Cenobites' leader (referred to by fans as "Pinhead") explains that although they have been perceived as both angels and demons, they are simply "explorers" from another dimension seeking carnal experiences, and they can no longer differentiate between pain and pleasure. When they attempt to force Kirsty to return to their realm with them, she informs Pinhead that Frank has escaped them. The Cenobites agree to spare Kirsty and re-capture Frank instead, with the condition that Frank must confess to escaping them. Kirsty returns home, where Frank has killed Larry and has taken on his identity by wearing his skin. Julia shows her what is purported to be Frank's flayed corpse in the attic. Kirsty then leaves the attic, locking the door behind her. The Cenobites appear and, not fooled by the deception, demand the man who "did this". Kirsty tries to escape, but is held by Julia and Frank. Frank reveals his true identity to Kirsty and, when his sexual advances are rejected, he decides to kill her to complete his rejuvenation. He accidentally stabs Julia instead and drains her without remorse. Frank chases Kirsty to the attic and, when he is about to kill her, the Cenobites appear after hearing him confess to killing her father. Now certain he is the one they are looking for, they ensnare him with chains with hooks and tear him to pieces. When the Cenobites double-cross Kirsty and attempt to take her, she grabs the puzzle box from Julia's dead hands and banishes them by reversing the motions needed to open the puzzle box. Kirsty's boyfriend Steve arrives and they both escape the collapsing house. Afterward, Kirsty throws the puzzle box onto a burning pyre. A vagrant who has been stalking Kirsty walks into the fire and retrieves the box before transforming into a winged skeleton-like creature and flying away. The box ends up with the same merchant who sold it to Frank, where he offers it to another customer.

In David Bruckner's chilling reimagining of Clive Barker's classic, a young woman named Riley come across a mysterious puzzle box with her boyfriend. Driven by curiosity and a desperate need to escape her addiction-plagued life, Riley solves the puzzle, unaware of the nightmarish consequences. The box summons the Cenobites, a sadistic order of beings from a dimension of pain and suffering, led by the iconic Pinhead with his rows of pins driven into his skull. Riley soon finds herself trapped in a waking nightmare, tormented by the Cenobites and haunted by the secrets of her brother's past. As she struggles to survive, she must confront the darkness within herself and learn the true meaning of pleasure and pain. Bruckner's Hellraiser is a visually stunning and gruesomely inventive film that stays true to the spirit of the original while offering a fresh and terrifying take on the Cenobite mythos. Hailing from Carlow, Ireland, David Halpin is a writer with a deep knowledge of Ireland's fairy lore and  pagan heritage. On his facebook blog, Circle Stories, he explores these themes in great depth.  David is also the creative force behind Occult Book Review on Twitter and YouTube. What I really love about David's work is he is an active participant in preserving the lore and mythology of Ireland. He goes out and sees the stones and raths and teases their stories from them. Which provides us with a vital link to our past.In the show David talks how fairy spirits of alleged different forms can manifest in the same ways. Tread Perilously's Doctor Who celebration continues with the second 60th anniversary special, "Wild Blue Yonder." After Donna accidentally pours coffee into the TARDIS console -- and a quick stop to alter Isaac Newton's famous day under the apple tree -- she and The Doctor materialize on an enormous but empty ship. Soon, the TARDIS senses a threat and vanishes, leaving the two travels to discover the mystery of the vessel stranded on the very edge of the universe. Will they face dark truths and even deadlier threats? Will The Flux continue to matter? And will they ever see Wilf? Erik pushes against the production's assertion that this is "unlike anything seen on Doctor Who before." He also cites "Midnight" and "42" in the discussion. Justin stumbles on a piece of established lore. Chris Chibnall comes up in a certain light. A digression into fantasy films leads to an appreciation of Sandahl Bergman. The pair also discuss the mavity of the situation and try to determine why "Wild Blue Yonder" was chosen to be featured in the episode. Cenobites end up crewing the Event Horizon mess hall. Fremen cuisine is theorized. Erik explains elements of The Flux and the Timeless Child. Justin presents two readings of The Exorcist and the ending of Loki's second season is finally explored.

This week we take a look back at the Hellraiser roundtable discussion where we compare the 1987 original Hellraiser and the 2022 remake, highlighting their respective storylines and themes. Hellraiser 1987 takes us on a twisted love story intertwined with supernatural elements, while Hellraiser 2022 immerses us in a dark and mysterious contemporary party. Both versions offer their own take on Pinhead and the Cenobites, capturing the essence of the Hellraiser story. In the 1980s, Pinhead was a British dude with pins in his head. While his appearance was certainly unique, his character didn't strike fear into my heart. Maybe it was the voice that just sounded too masculine and normal. It lacked that eerie distortion that I expect from a horror character. Plus, let's be honest, I've known people who look like that guy in real life. But fast forward to the modern day Pinhead, and it's a whole different story. The design is more horror chic, and it genuinely terrifies me. The new Pinhead looks alien, otherworldly. I appreciate that they moved away from the fully BDSM style and embraced a more androgynous aesthetic. In this new portrayal, Pinhead is genuinely creepy as fuck, and that's exactly what I want from this character. It's a refreshing take and a departure from the original, but in a good way.Whether you're a long-time fan of Hellraiser or new to the franchise, our podcast offers a comprehensive exploration of the original and remake, Pinhead's character evolution, and the importance of trans representation in film and television.
