The podcast which you are about to listen to is an account of the tragedy which befell a group of three best friends, in particular Ashely Krohn and her older brother, (and our special guest) Justin. It is all the more tragic in that they were young(ish). But, had they lived very, very long lives, they could not have expected nor would they have wished to view as much of the mad and macabre as they were to watch on film that day. For them an idyllic winter movie double-feature became a nightmare. The events of that viewing were to lead to the discovery of two of the most bizarre due of films in the annals of American history. For our final installment in our SIBLINGS theme, we are honored to welcome film and television editor, Ashley's brother Justin to the pod, as he introduces Graham and Katie to 1974's Texas Chainsaw Massacre and it's abysmal sequel, 1986's Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Starting with the horror film that gives a new meaning to the word "disturbing", the original classic introduced audiences to slasher icon Leatherface as we do a deep dive into the wonderful world of the horror genre. Then we take a HARD LEFT to discuss the camp, 80s coke-fueled insanity that is the Dennis Hopper-lead sequel where Leatherface makes his return, along with the rest of his revolting family. We chat a bit about what a film/tv editor does, some of Justin's past credits, and what it was like in the Krohn household when Ashley was FORCED to view one of the most beautiful pieces of cinema as a mere preteen (note: it was not either of these two movies). So rev up the chainsaw, try not to eat any chili beforehand, and pull up a seat at our dinner table for our last episode of 2022! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week for Thanksgorging, we feature a film with what is inarguably Jake's favorite horror movie poster of all time: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2! For those of you wonderying why we didn't review the first, the answer is twofold: 1) every podcast has done an episode on it; 2) we put it behind a damn paywall. #shamelessplugforourmiddlingpatreon This film, like the original, was directed by Tobe Hooper. It was written by someone named L. M. Kit Carson, who kinda just fell into obscurity thereafter. Remember a day when a box office flop would end your carrer, but then people like Uwe Boll kept getting movies made? Yeesh. TCM2 brings back the old favorite and introduces Bill Moseley's iconic Chop Top to the Sawyer clan. Bill Johnson takes over for Leatherface after the makers could not come to terms with Gunnar Hanson on a return. We talk about the deleted scenes, one of which involves the Patron Saint of Slashers, Joe Bob Briggs. We also talk about the long-languishing All American Massacre, which was directed by Hooper's son, William, but has yet to see the light of day. Did you know that this soundtrack features the like of Oingo Boingo, The Cramps, and Stewart Copeland (of The Police and the guy who did the damn music for Spyro the Dragon). It's rare that we get the chance to discuss a movie that changed everything - but this is one of those times. For better or worse, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was ground zero for a whole new sub genre of films - the slasher horror flick, which continues to dominate the horror market today. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) follows a group of friends who fall victim to a family of cannibals while on their way to visit an old homestead. The film was marketed as being based on true events to attract a wider audience and to act as a subtle commentary on the era's political climate; although the character of Leatherface and minor story details were inspired by the crimes of murderer Ed Gein, its plot is largely fictional. On this edition of Parallax Views, it's a Halloween hangover episode where politics and horror movies collide! Martin Harris, author of Leatherface vs. Tricky Dick: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre as Political Satire, joins me to examine filmmaker Tobe Hooper's 1974 cult classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in the context of the turbulent political scandal it was made in the midst of: Watergate and the fall of President Richard Milhouse Nixon. Believe it or not, Hooper himself made references to how his infamous film was influenced by the political climate of the 1970s. Much was going on when the film was being made. U.S. economic woes were increasing while gas shortages impacted the nation. The leftovers of the psychedelic 60s counterculture were wondering about in the aftermath of the Manson Family killings and Altamont. The Vietnam War was winding down but its effect on the American psyche was looming large. The rural/urban divide was growing. And Richard Nixon, with the help of his cronies like G. Gordon Liddy, plotted to break-in to the Democratic National Convention in what would become of the biggest scandal in American political history. Harris and I discuss all this and much more in this fascinating conversation that also delves into the parallels between Leatherface and Richard Nixon, the character of "The Old Man" (played by Jim Siedow) in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Richard Nixon, Irving Kristol's "The Nightmare of Watergate" and the irrationality of Watergate, the dark comedy of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, a historical overview of the Watergate scandal and the way it was experienced by Americans at the time, Gerald Ford's comments about Watergate as "our long national nightmare", Hunter S. Thompson's commentaries on Watergate and his invocation of the horrific and grotesque when writing about it,  "Saturn in Retrograde" and the implications of the cosmic in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, satires of the Nixon era as it was happening, the infamous White House "Saturday Night Massacre" under Nixon, the valence of Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel's production company being called Vortex Inc., the circularity of both The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Watergate wherein the "horror folds in on itself", the chilling opening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and the narration by John Larroquette, criminal discovery in Watergate and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, the villains of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre as conspirators engaged in cover-ups of crimes, the character of "The Hitchhiker" (played by Edwin Neal), the Leatherface mask and the Nixon mask, Leatherface's formality of dress (ie: tie and suit), tensions between "old ways" and "new ways" and tradition vs. youth in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Nixon and the Southern Strategy, Tobe Hooper's experimental film Eggshells and its relationship to the 1960s counterculture, the power of the Presidency and draconian measures in the Nixon era, the rise of astrology and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, political lies and the lie that The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was "based on a true story", the popularity of astrology in times of uncertainty and Nixon's relationship with astrologer Jeane Dixon, political allegory vs. political satire, satire as a means to comment on real life matters in indirect ways, and much, more! In this episode we discuss The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Part II, a spoof sequel that came out 12 years after the original. As you can imagine, that makes this one a little different than the typical second film. We've still got Leatherface and the rest of his cannibalistic family (even Grandpa!), but now they're terrorizing all of Texas and turning people into chilli. We'll discuss whether this is a bad spoof or too good of a spoof, and talk about the importance of a cool nickname (something everyone in this film has). We'll also talk about email logins, chilli cookoffs, purse trash, and dorito meat.

We also don't want to offend Leatherface who never has a problem getting people to HANG out. Then theres the ghoulish gang from Hell - Pinhead and the Cenobites! Do they count as "slashers"? What are your qualifiers? Who is the best? What kill keeps you coming back again every Halloween for a reminder of who the baddest slasher is?? Is there more than one? One we forgot?? It's the reboot of the Texas Chainsaw franchise! Wait, no it isn't, that was in 2003. It's the sequel to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre! No, not the good one from 1986. It's ... look, it's a movie with Leatherface that (we're pretty sure) occurs in Texas, what more do you want? In the year 2013, the franchise got another installment based largely on the promise of the chainsaw popping out of the screen in three dimensions. Without that ... well, Trey Songz is here? That's something? This week's recommendations: Sean likes THE LAST DUEL, Robin recommends the classic ALL THAT JAZZ (and does not recommend Needle in a Timestack) and Kahmeela is still very much wrapped up in SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE. (The consensus on Halloween Kills is a spooky shrug.)
