"Hey! Do you want to start a podcast?" Those were the fabled words of Chris Clements to Sean Noble four years ago that launched the Light Beer | Dark Money podcast in the meeting rooms of GCU's Canyon Ventures. Encouraged by Executive Director, Robert Vera, the podcast began with a few guests and sounded a lot like a bad SNL NPR skit. We've since graduated to the big-time studios of Dave Pratt's Star Worldwide Networks and WE could not be more appreciative to Mayor Pratt and our producers - Robin Cote, Bill Harfosh, and Alex Smet - for giving us the opportunity to spout off about issues of Faith Freedom and Free Enterprise. Thank you to all of our guests and our listeners for making this a top podcast. Speaking of NPR - Chris and Sean also tackle the hearings recently held on Capitol Hill regarding the inherent Liberal bias of both NPR and PBS - both of which seem to live in an alternate reality than a country that is primarily conservative. Meanwhile, the Trump administration continues to deal with the fallout of the "Signalgate" scandal... a "scandal" that really isn't one other than the fact that Jeffrey Goldberg could have removed himself from a spirited back and forth that led to a successful military operation... that continues today. In terms of alternate realities, many 80/20 issues - men in women's sports, deportation of gang members, bombing of Tesla dealerships -have engulfed the Left and are becoming more like religion than sound policy prescriptions. Chris and Sean conclude that the absence of belief in creation and even creation order has led the hard Left to create new Gods to follow. Lastly, will DOGE continue the chains saw approach to government with Elon Derangement Syndrome taking center stage on all media platforms. Should Elon wear a Freddy, Jason, Michael, or Leatherface mask as her takes the chain saw to huge swaths of waste fraud and abuse? Thanks for 4 amazing years! Here's to many more! I had the pleasure and honor to sit down with the awesome and talented Sam Coleman who you all know as Wyllis from Game of Thrones, but we didn't speak about that at all during this interview. Sorry.I wanted to get to know him and his character ‘Bud'from the movie Leatherface, his aspect from the movie and knowing what it was like to film such a great movie. As I mentioned, I love origin stories. Especially origin stories about horror icons; how did it all start and who is the killer.Sam was able to tell us all of that and he mentioned that he had a lot of fun playing his part alongside Stephen Dorff and Lili Taylor. He described how cold it was filing in Bulgaria and how they had to make it look like a hot summer in Texas. Hollywood magic is what I would describe… But you cannot have that magic without the cast and crew.Am I a little disappointed that Bud didn't turn out to be Leatherface? Of course I am – but it was the director's intention to trick the audience into believing that. I tip my hat to you, Sir. Well done…Overall, Sam is a phenomenal and talented actor. I am 100% positive that no matter what career he chooses to pursue, there will be no doubt that he will excel. Great guest and I recommend him to be a guest on anypodcast.

Josh Ethier is a film editor who has become a household name in horror. Josh is the editing force behind such films as: Contracted, Some Kind of Hate, We are Still Here, Mayhem, Leatherface, Bliss, VFW, Orphan First Kill, Christmas Bloody Christmas, The Seventh Day, Gretel and Hansel, Don't Breathe and most recently Companion which he edited alongside Brett Bachman. In this episode, Josh gets into his career history, editing process, collaborations with filmmakers like Joe Begos and Osgood Perkins and the story behind the recently released Companion, which is one of my favorite horror movies in a long time. This is a really insightful conversation that I really enjoyed and think you will as well. Please welcome, Josh Ethier! Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with JoshLook for the Note Behind the NoteAudience feedback can be a double-edged sword—sometimes useful, sometimes misleading. Josh learned early on from Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator) that feedback isn't about taking every note literally but understanding the note behind the note which requires deeper analysis. For instance, on Companion, early test screenings showed that one character was getting lower audience scores. Instead of softening the character, they leaned into the audience's dislike and committed to it—embracing the audience's reaction rather than trying to cater to feedback. As a result, the character actually scored higher in later tests.Editing is a “Four-Month Conversation” Between Director and EditorThe relationship between an editor and a director is one of the most intimate creative partnerships in filmmaking. Josh emphasizes that the strongest director-editor teams are built on genuine relationships, which is why socializing and getting to know each other outside of the work is just as important as the technical process. The best collaborations happen when an editor and director truly understand each other's creative DNA—the movies that inspire them, their sense of humor, their artistic instincts, and how they think about storytelling. The editing room isn't just where cuts are made; it's where creative risks are taken, where directors feel safe enough to experiment, and where an editor helps guide them toward their best possible work. The more an editor and director understand each other, the better they can anticipate each other's needs, develop a shorthand, challenge each other in the right ways, and ultimately make the movie stronger.Immerse Yourself in QualityJosh believes that editors—and all filmmakers—should obsessively watch and absorb great films. But instead of overanalyzing or attempting to reverse-engineer their greatness, the key is exposure. Some films are great because they have an innate rhythm, a unique DNA that can't simply be replicated. Rather than trying to deconstruct and apply a formula, internalize their essence. Understand what great filmmaking feels like, so when it comes time to shape your own work, you instinctively recognize when something is working—and when it's not. This is also a common piece of creative advice given by Rick Rubin, and I highly recommend his book The Creative Act.SHOW NOTESMovies DiscussedCompanion (2024)Almost Human (2013)Contracted (2013)Gretel & Hansel (2020)We Are Still Here (2015)First Blood (1982)Jaws (1975)Seven (1995)Looper (2012)Books & ResourcesIn the Blink of an Eye – Walter MurchThe Conversations: Walter Murch and the Art of Editing Film – Michael OndaatjeEasy Riders, Raging Bulls – Peter...

In this first part of our deep dive into the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, we explore the origins and evolution of one of horror's most iconic series, covering the groundbreaking original film through to Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation. We begin with Tobe Hooper's 1974 classic, examining its shocking impact on the horror genre and its cultural significance, including its infamous portrayal of violence and the infamous character of Leatherface. We'll discuss how the film's raw, documentary-style aesthetic created a sense of realism that left audiences both terrified and mesmerised. From there, we'll delve into the sequels, starting with Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986), which shifted tones from gritty horror to dark comedy while introducing new, memorable characters and expanding on the mythology of the Sawyer family.Next, we'll explore Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990), a film that struggled with the franchise's identity amidst changing horror landscapes and censorship challenges. We'll also take a closer look at *Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation* (1994), which aimed to reinvigorate the series with a fresh perspective but met with mixed reviews.Throughout this episode, we'll discuss the thematic elements that link these films, the portrayal of family dynamics and violence, and how each instalment reflects the societal anxieties of its time. Join us for a gripping journey through chainsaws, horror, and the legacy of one of cinema's most enduring franchises. If you enjoyed this - Check out my other content here - https://linktr.ee/FirstClassHorrorBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/classhorrorcast--4295531/support.

This time we are talking about one of, if not the greatest horror movie of all time!  We talk the history of the film from concept to the fallout after the film was released. The story of how this movie came to exist is as wild as the film itself. The making of this film took a toll on everyone involved. Some went on to have huge careers, others faded into obscurity. Along the way they suffered on screen and off to create a legendary film that is a right of passage.  Disclaimer: there is a slight audio issue with one of the mics. This was not noticable until we were editing and was not able to be fully fixed. It shouldn't effect your ability to enjoy the episode but if you notice something sounds off occasionally you're not imagining things and it's not your playback method.

Welcome back to the Video Store Podcast! Next week is Thanksgiving, a holiday many of us celebrate by spending time with our families… whether we want to or not. Can you believe my family banned me from bringing the mashed potatoes just because of the time I piled them up into the shape of a mountain and screamed “THIS MEANS SOMETHING” while serving them? My family has no sense of humor. Or appreciation for Close Encounters of the Third Kind.On this week's episode I decided to share a few family films… not necessarily films made for families, but ones that feature families. Sure, some of them are non-traditional family units, but as you all know, we can't choose our families and sometimes we have to accept our relatives for who they are. Even if they're chainsaw-wielding cannibals. My first pick of the week is is the 1974 classic, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, featuring the Sawyer family. (If you're looking for a conversation starter over Thanksgiving dinner, you can now tell your family you know Leatherface's last name.) The legend of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is bigger than the film itself. It takes a while before our sacrificial teens get into trouble, and in full disclosure only one person gets killed by a chainsaw, which isn't much of a massacre. The film is nowhere near as gory as people think and people have ripped the idea off hundreds of times in other films, but it's always fun to go back and watch the source of so many horror movie tropers. Good for watching before or after Thanksgiving dinner, but probably not during.Next is 1966's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and George Segal. Stylistically, this film always reminded me of 12 Angry Men. Both films (both of which were based on plays) have the ability through dialog to take you on an emotional ride. Both films made strong impressions in me. In Virginia Woolf, George and Martha (Burton and Taylor) invite a younger couple over for drinks after a dinner party. As the alcohol continues to flow, pointed barbs turn to nasty cuts as the couple weaponize their guests against one another. It's a masterclass in acting and you'll have to play close attention to fully understand everyone's motivations and, ultimately, the ending. Woolf is a tragic and powerful film that remains only one of two films to ever be nominated for every Academy Award category it was eligible for. My third recommendation this week is 1985's The Stuff. The Stuff is a delicious and addictive treat that may also be alive and turning people into mindless zombies. After The Stuff ravages the ice cream industry, a former FBI agent nicknamed Mo is hired to figure out what The Stuff is and who is marketing it. Meanwhile, a boy named Jason has discovered the dark side of The Stuff and fights with his family who demand he joins them. Before long Mo and Jason along with ice cream mogul Chocolate Chip Charlie team up to take on The Stuff. Remember, “Enough is never enough!” The Stuff is a little horror and a little comedy with a whole lot of thinly disguised social commentary sprinkled on top. Fun 80s schlock that might have you double-checking the whipped cream on top of your pumpkin pie.Lastly we have Labyrinth, released in 1986. One of Jim Henson's greatest film achievements, Labyrinth tells the story of Sarah, a girl who wishes the Goblin King would take away her young brother Toby… and immediately regrets it. Sarah must work her way through Jareth's labyrinth, with both help and detours presented by its inhabitants. Despite occasionally getting annoyed with our family, there's no stronger bond. While there's a good chance you've seen Labyrinth, I'm worried that maybe your kids, nieces or nephews, or grandkids haven't. This is a great film that deserves to be shared with the next generation. Thanks as always for stopping by the Video Store Podcast. We'll be closed on Thanksgiving which means you'll get an extas day's rental for free on any tapes rented this week. Don't forget to rewind your tapes before returning them, and be sure to pick up your complimentary cup of The Stuff from our snack bar on the way out. Enough is never enough! “Comedy and scares are so similar. I've found that in a lot of my scripts, it's almost like you're taking the peaks and valleys of humor, and the peaks and valleys of scares, and flipping them on each other. So, you have the scare that you come down from for a moment of brevity and humor, or just character work, and then you do another scare. You've relaxed them and then scare them again. The effect is that you're making the audience have a good time,” says Seth Sherwood, author of The Scary Movie Writer's Guide. In this episode, we speak with Seth Sherwood, writer of horror movies like Leatherface and Hell Fest. He was also nominated for an Emmy for writing the TV show Light as a Feather. I chat with him about the long process of making Hell Fest with producer Gale Ann Hurd, the difference between internal and external horror, and his definition of grounded horror that's so popular these days. He also gives his advice on what he thinks is the single best thing an emerging horror writer can do to help their career.  “Right now, the industry is in a retraction, there's an implosion and streaming is dying. When people ask me now how to break in, I say I don't know, but I think you'll never go wrong in actually trying to make stuff like short films. I know it's a whole other path and it's a difficult thing to do but people will always watch stuff before they read stuff if they're not writers. And those people are the gatekeepers. I always wanted to make my own films, but my writing career took off and I'm actually in a spot where I'm going backwards, where I have done so many writing assignments in the last few years but things aren't getting made – so, I'm going to go make a microbudget horror film on my own with my friends. The thing that I wanted to do when I was 20 years old. Because at least it's a thing that can be seen. And that has more weight than a script right now,” he says.  To hear more about horror writing from Seth's perspective, listen to the podcast.

Hitching a ride in the van is The Losers' Club and Halloweenies co-host Rachel Reeves, who offers invaluable insight into the sound design of the film.
