This week on the HappyCast, we talk all things hockey with our favorite runner from up north, Trevor Meding! Not really, though. As cool as that would be, we decide to discuss the latest edition of Southern States 200 with Trevor, who just ran the race and is slowly recovering from his epic trek from Georgia to Alabama. The Southern States 200 is the only point-to-point mountain race east of the Rockies. With 85% of the race taking place on the Pinhoti trail, and a shade under 28,000ft of climbing, this is an epic, scenic and “runnable” 200 miler. We talk to Trevor about his experience on the course, his strategies, and shockingly, how it was to run the ENTIRE race with no crew OR drop bags. Yes, he carried EVERYTHING he had on his back, which apparently was only “7-8lbs”.As someone who enjoys running alone, we also hear about Trevor's experience running with three other men who eventually were dubbed “the four amigos”. We also dive deep into his epic sprint at the end to finish sub-72 hours. We discuss all of this and more, on another epic edition of the HappyCast! Don't forget to check out Trevor's blog that goes over his races:#ultrarunningdadBe sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. Dave Owens of the Pinhoti Project stops in for another great episode of Spring Thunder. Dave talks about growing up in Georgia and hunting turkeys at a young age. His Youtube channel started in 2008 but switched over to Pinhoti Project in 2018 becoming one the most popular turkey hunting channels on Youtube. Non-Resident draws to creating a brand this episode is a must listen to.
Dave Owens is a turkey hunter, a turkey call maker, owner of the popular brand and Youtube channel, the Pinhoti Project, and also the winner of the 2025 grand national turkey calling contest. To watch Dave's hunting videos click here: https://www.youtube.com/@pinhotiproject
This week we are joined by one of our favorite guests, Dave Owens of the Pinhoti Project. Dave is a renowned traveling turkey hunter who obsesses over the details and is one of our favorite guests. We decided to ask him questions that he rarely gets asked in an effort to learn something new. How does he prepare for weeks of reduced sleep? He explains his filming set up to help listeners film their own hunts, we talk woodsmanship skills and how they paint a picture of what's occurring, how he keeps up with the many different turkeys he is aware of, how environmental factors affect the sound of a gobble, how he anticipates what's going to happen—allowing him to prepare—and how there is something therapeutic about the spring woods. It's a good one. Listen, Learn and Enjoy. On this episode we talk with Dave Owens of the Pinhoti Project about his approach to turkey hunting, traveling, and trends. We don't get too deep into techniques, because each situation is different with turkeys. But we do talk about some of the similarities that are found in turkey hunters. Me, Chris, and Hunter took Dave on a trap line with us before we recorded, so he had gotten to see Hunter in his element trapping coyotes, bobcats, and beavers. He also got to see Chris in his, observing foodplots, getting sick about ruts in roads, and telling stories about white tigers and carnivals. We hope you enjoy, Dave Owens is a class act. If you have been living under a rock and don't know who he is, go find him at www.https://pinhotiproject.com/ , or on Facebook and Instagram Pinhoti Project. @pinhotiproject @brentlochala686

What happens when the chaos of touring musicianship meets the grit of ultra-running? In this inspiring episode, we welcome ultra runners, musicians, and friends Kyle Whalum, Brad Sample, and Caleb Gilbreath to share their unique journey through the Pinhoti 100 ultramarathon and beyond. The conversation explores the parallels between music and running, highlighting the importance of self-discovery, inner rhythm, and passion over competition. From battling imposter syndrome to embracing spontaneity, the guests reflect on personal growth, the beauty of simplicity, and finding harmony in life's challenges. Exciting episode today, tune in to hear some great conversations! Our only listener in Rhode Island, Cole Crosby, also happens to be a really cool guy and a super fast runner. We have him on the show to talk about what he's been up to in the world of ultrarunning and what his future plans are. We go over race results from Pinhoti 100 which we somehow missed talking about on the last episode. Then we discuss the incredible thing that happened at Tunnel Hill this year, Courtney Olsen set a women's 50 mile world record!!! We go over the results from the Puerto Vallarta by UTMB 100 mile and 100K, U.S. runners did pretty well there! We cover Fuzzy Fandango 50K which has turned into a fall classic of sorts at the Mohican State Forest, the gem of Ohio trail running. A new self supported and overall FKT was set on the AZ Trail. Some sort of record was set by two Americans who did a sub 24 hour 100 miler in Antarctica. We love music and we love ultrarunning and this episode is a perfect intersection of those two things. From touring with Katy Perry and playing for Kelly Clarkson to starring on this season of The Voice, Kyle Whalum, Brad Sample, and Caleb Gilbreath are friends, professional musicians, and self-proclaimed running nerds who set out to train for, and complete the Pinhoti 100 ultramarathon on top of their already chaotic lives as they struggle to balance family life with the chaos of the music industry. Rhythm in the Darkness is a documentary about all of that and more, and so is today's conversation. Have you ever looked back at a day in your life, and said "WOW - I Can't Believe I did That!"? In this podcast series, listen to QT2 athletes tell the stories of how they achieved goals that they once never dreamed possible. Season 2, Episode 2 features QT2 Systems athlete Lauren Paulson, coached by Anne Basso. At the end of last year, Lauren's husband asked her how she wanted to celebrate her upcoming 50th birthday. Her response was "I love racing. I want to race." So Lauren decided to celebrate her 50th birthday by doing a race each month of the year - and we're not talking about 5Ks! This experienced long course triathlete and trail runner kicked things off in January with the Miami Marathon. Over the course of the year, her races have included two 100Ks, an IRONMAN 70.3 and the SOS Triathlon. In November, she will hit the trails for her longest run race ever - the Pinhoti 100 miler. When Lauren shared her idea with her Coach Anne Basso, Anne was immediately on board. Over the past year, she has worked with Lauren to balance training and recovery, and allow Lauren to not only participate but to race well. Lauren credits Anne's coaching for her success in being able to do these back to back to back races. Throughout her years as an endurance athlete, Lauren has time and again done things she never thought she could do. By removing limits, she opened up vast possibilities. I met Bob Watters at the 2nd crew meetup aid station at Cruel Jewel this year and then again saw him at the turnaround point. He was crewing and pacing his son and I was crewing my friend Jamie. I noticed him wearing that awesome Southern States 200 buckle and introduced myself. I wanted to record a recap for the podcast and then fate would have it that my friend Amber peer-pressured me into running it this year. So, selfishly I was looking for tips. Bob is an accomplished ultra-runner having finished Pinhoti 9 times and other challenging races such as Blood Rock 100 and No Business. He was also the state champ in cowboy style shooting a few years ago, hench the nickname "cowboy" which came from me, not him. I think you will enjoy getting to know Bob and the Alabama races a little better and I bet you'll be wanting to check some of them out. Links below. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek brought to you by Sawyer Products, we are joined by Brandon “Horsepower” Weis. With minimal prior backpacking experience, in 2021, Brandon successfully completed the calendar year triple crown plus a thru-hike of the Arizona Trail. The next two years were not any more laid back, as he accrued more than 15,000 miles worth of backpacking over a three year span, including treks of the Benton MacKay Trail, Pinhoti, Oregon Desert Trail, Bigfoot Trail, Pacific Northwest Trail, Colorado Trail, Hayduke, and the Sheltowee Trace Trail. In addition to giving us an overview of these treks, Horsepower delights us with fun stories, including a terrifying encounter with a grizzly, sleeping in countless pit toilets, being asked to leave a restaurant due to his odor, accidentally drinking deet, and more. We wrap the show with an overview of the first half of trail days, including how Badger is the world's biggest moron, the triple crown of our short section hike on the AT, and how many drinks constitute drinking. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Bailey “PseudoSloth” Bremner. In addition to hikes of the CDT, Great Divide Trail, Pinhoti, and Benton Mackaye, we do a deep dive on a pair of custom routes that Bailey mapped out herself. The Columbine Route, which crosses the full length of Colorado, and another custom route extending all the way from Canada to Mexico, both of which she completed with her two dogs by her side. We learn all about the specifics of these routes, the tools and strategies she used to design them, the various geographical high and lowlights, her favorite stories from these hikes, and how she manages this unconventional style of trekking alongside her pair of pups. We wrap the show with a follow-up on the technical glitches iPhone users experienced with FarOut's app this year, the number of owls we'd have to see in a day before we knew something was wrong, and the triple crown of words we will never be able to spell correctly. If you think huge goals are unattainable or you're not good enough, so did this week's guest on the "Run The Race" podcast. More than a decade after this abused young man was a cocaine addict and homeless...he's focused on his Christian walk and long distance running, having recently completed his first 100 mile race...but there's pain on the way to the finish line for fitness and faith. (2:46) I first talked with Randy Murphy, father of 3 in Alabama and new endurance runner, about how we can all overcome injuries as amateur athletes. It's bound to happen. 2 years into his running career, he had an almost completely fractured hip. He didn't know if he'd run again, (10:00) but he has a message for anyone hoping to make a comeback in any sport. Listen to his post-injury lessons learned, especially about not being undertrained, putting enough work/miles in. (16:25) It was gaining 20 lbs during the Covid pandemic that prompted him to start jogging, fast forwarding to half marathons too quick too. Finding running friends and group runs helped keep him going. (21:15) Randy also talks in-depth about the similarities of endurance for both ultrarunning (anything over a 26.2 mile marathon) and faith. What do you do when you feel you can't go any further in a workout or a race? As scripture refers too, there's a lot of training and discipline in the Christian walk too, just like for a sport. He gives some examples of how to prepare for those incoming storms in life. (26:33) He's had plenty of obstacles too, on drugs and living in his car during his early 20s. Eventually, he was invited to church, not judged there...and says God supernaturally took away his desire for those substances. Now, he strives to be the father he didn't have. (37:30) As for running longer distances, he previously thought people that ran 50 or 100 mile races were crazy, but now finds it very fulfilling. Listen to the episode to hear his full recap of the Pinhoti 100 in Alabama, which he completed 1 year after his hip surgery. He breaks down feeling good for 75 miles, then the sleep-deprived Randy couldn't even run much because of calf pain, in tears the last few miles and at the finish line, after a 28 hour journey. (50:30) Runner Randy also has advice for others about setting big goals, not feeling good enough, our bodies and minds capable of so much more as we chip away at challenges through hard work. (56:25) I close out the pod in prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Share it with your friends. This week Clint and Dawson sit down with Lea Mulligan. Lea' s trail running results read like a highly successful 40 year old runner except she is 25 years old. Lea was born and raised in Chattanooga and has enjoyed exploring the woods since she was a little kid. She ran cross country since she was 8 years old and got introduced to the Ultra-Running world when she was in high school. Since she was young, Lea was inspired by her mom's running career and loved sweeping events with her as a teenager. Lea completed her first 50K, Run Amok, her senior year in highschool, and she has been hooked on trail running since then. After running cross country at Maryville College and exploring the Smokies for 4 years, She decided she wanted to be more competitive with trail running. Lea signed up for Pinhoti 100 in 2021 and loved every piece of the 100 distance ranging from the snacks to the wonderful community. Working as an elementary school teacher has allowed her to explore trails all over the US in the summertime, and she spent this last summer living out of a minivan in Colorado training for CCC 100K in France. Lea says; "it was an absolute dream getting to explore the alps before and during CCC, and I am even more excited to keep chasing my running dreams with my friends." Thanks for listening! It's a huge challenge in September, Suicide Awareness Month. My guest for this episode of "Run The Race" knows how pain and failure can make you feel like giving up on life, but he wants to provide hope, in part through his upcoming longest run ever. (3:20) Phil Parsons, a combat infantry veteran and ultra runner and husband/dad, is planning to go 444 miles on foot, running or walking that distance over the course of 11 days, all to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention, especially among vets: https://pledgeit.org/natr. What's his training been like for the 444 that will happen September 20-30 from TN to MS on the Natchez Trace? How about his emotions? He's also doing this to change the narrative of his life. (11:25) Phil joined the Army not too long before the September 11 attacks, ending up on deployments to Iraq, seeing horrible things that did not bother him until he came back home. He talks about being angry, losing his marriage, being emotionless. (18:05) This veteran tried to kill himself several times, the last suicide attempt being a gun to his head 16 years ago, in September - this 444 mile challenge being around the anniversary of that. He describes why he almost ended it all and why he didn't go through with it. (24:30) Through all the pain, he found running...starting with a marathon in GA, moving up to a 50K, then the Pinhoti 100. At first, he was often running angry, but found something different on the trails: the feeling of being a kid again, getting to be himself - without a mask. Now, he GETS to run and also helps other veterans on his job as a social worker. He loves helping fellow troops, but had to take care of himself first. (31:49) For his upcoming 444 miles, Phil discusses the logistics (40 miles per day), support(getting help from running group "Band of Brothers"), and nutrition/hydration that will be central to his week-and-a-half journey. Think electrolytes, PB&Js, Chex Mix, and more. Meantime, his triathlete wife is no slouch, training for an Ironman. You can learn more about the 444 here: https://unbridledrunning.com/the-four-forty-four/ Part of his journey is also being a (42:48) cult survivor, just going along as he grew up, but being terrified to break free, and finally being able to question things in life. (47:07) Phil also has a life-saving message for anyone, especially former/current military, that involves a story about a bridge on the Natchez Trace that has seen too much tragedy. The takeaway: Sit with the pain and discomfort in life or running, and it will get better, things will turn around. Stay in motion and do something! After our chat, I close the pod in prayer. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Sara Leibold. Sara is a solo adventurer, thru-hiker, writer, and vlogger with more than 10,000 human-powered miles under her belt. Her adventures include several thru-hikes, for which we zoom in on her hikes of the AT, Benton MacKaye, and most recently, the Hayduke. We also learn about her wild adventure of rowing the length of the Mississippi River, from source to sea. And we get a run down on Sara's many odd jobs, including ridge running on the AT, working in production for ESPN, and more. We wrap the show with sad news of an AT hiker who turned up deceased in Vermont, the triple crown of worst appetizers, and what petty hills we are willing to die on. But first. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Heidi Nisbett aka Sketch. Heidi is a thru-hiker, hiking guide, and an exceptionally talented artist, having recently been commissioned to paint a giant mural at the Trail Center in Damascus. Heidi gives us the lowdown on why she loved the Foothills Trail, the Superior Hiking Trail, Pinhoti Trail, and more. We also go in-depth on Heidi's journey as an artist, how she fell in love with it as a kid, fell out of love with it post-college, and rekindled the flame during her time hiking the AT. She shares her top advice to aspiring trail-focused artists, we learn about a CDT thru-hike that went wildly awry, and we chat the best and worst beer styles. This is another fun chat guaranteed to bring a smile to your head. We wrap the show with reasons why the Florida Trail is actually awesome, I'm shamed for liking things I'm good at, we do a triple crown of hiking things we just don't get, a Florida Man segment, and much more.
