Every election we hear of the “care crisis” as if it’s about to explode. But care affects us all, and not just in election cycles. And rather than an explosion, the reality of care in the UK looks more like the slow and gradual erosion of the fabric of social provision. But why is care […]
NARAL's The Morning After is a production of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio. This past weekend, Gabe was joined by Joyelle Johnson (Late Night with Seth Meyers) and Sarah Hartshorne (America's Next Top Model) from Lady Parts Justice League! The team of comedians from LPJL was in town as a part of their Vagical Mystery Tour. They did an abortion speak-out panel at ComFest and raised money for abortion rights work with a hilarious comedy show at Ace of Cups. Lady Parts Justice League is the brain-child of Lizz Winstead, who co-founded The Daily Show and Air America Radio. They travel from state to state visiting independent abortion clinics, doing service projects to help clinic providers, and throwing parties for clinic staff. Before visiting Columbus, they swung through Toledo to boost the clinic escorts from Capital Care! NARAL’s The Morning After is a production of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio. This week, Kelley, Jaime, and Vashitta discuss our win in Toledo! After five years of asking ProMedica for a transfer agreement for Capital Care, we finally have it. In Columbus, ACLU of Ohio, Preterm, and Planned Parenthood announced a lawsuit to block the Down syndrome […]
Created Equal is leading a demonstration along with other pro-life activists in Toledo to ask two local hospitals, ProMedica and St. Luke's, to keep their word and stay out of the grisly business of abortion. Ohio state law requires ambulatory surgical centers, like Capital Care network’s Toledo abortion facility, to have a transfer agreement with a local hospital. To date, Toledo’s ProMedica Hospital had chosen not to provide Capital Care the transfer agreement. Randy Oostra, President and CEO of ProMedica, previously said, "Toledo ProMedica Hospital does not have transfer agreements with abortion clinics. However, with or without a transfer agreement, we will perform any necessary treatment of women, or any patient, in need of emergent care." However, following the Supreme Court decision last week, ProMedica spokesman Tedra White stated, "At this point, ProMedica has not changed its position; obviously we’re considering it. We feel like this Ohio Supreme Court decision warrants a review of the issue, but we have not changed our position." In response, Created Equal first led a campaign to generate phone calls and emails to ProMedica, urging them not to collaborate with Capital Care. Call ProMedica CEO Randy Oostra (567-585-3562). Earlier this week, the Supreme Court of Ohioheard the case of Capital Care Network of Toledo v. Ohio Department of Health, which has a lawless Toledo abortion clinic ON THE ROPES due to its numerous and longstanding violations of Ohio law.Why is Capital Care Network going to lose this case? Mark Harrington says it's because abortion is NOT HEALTH CARE, and abortion mills are NOT CLINICS. Abortion clinics wishing to be treated as "HEALTH CLINICS" can't have their cake and eat it too. Written transfer agreements are ROUTINE for all surgical centers, and if abortion clinics want to be considered health clinics (which is what they've INSISTED on being called), they should be required to meet basic surgical standards!Abortion facilities, like any other ambulatory surgical facility (ASF) in Ohio, must have a transfer agreement (TA) with a local hospital. According to Ohio law only private hospitals can make TAs with abortion facilities. In Toledo, no private hospital wants to make a TA with the last remaining abortion clinic in the city.Health care facilities don’t want to be affiliated with abortionists and abortion mills because they are tired of cleaning up their messes. THIS is why Capital Care of Toledo WILL LOSE THIS CASE! You can watch The Mark Harrington Show LIVE every Thursday at 1pm ET on Created Equal Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts. If you can't catch him live, you can subscribe to Mark via podcast to listen any time!
Description: This week, Kellie, Vashitta, and Gabe discuss Capital Care Network in Toledo. An August 30 Toledo City Council meeting to support a clinic protection ordinance heard testimony from clinic escorts, staff, and patients who have sen harassment by protesters first hand. This week, Toledo's Capital Care was again the focus of a hearing, this time in the Ohio Supreme Court. Clinic attorney Jennifer Branch presented an argument that John Kasich‘s “transfer agreement” rule is unconstitutional. Full video of the Ohio Supreme Court hearing for Capital Care Network of Toledo v. Ohio Dept. of Health Also on Tuesday, the Ohio Senate Committee on Health heard our testimony on the Down syndrome abortion ban. Kellie testified that afternoon after we recorded this podcast. Full committee video on the Down syndrome abortion ban Finally, we discussed the possibility of a Total Abortion Ban, which became a much more serious notion later in the week when we learned that Janet Folger Porter, author of the “Heartbeat Bill” visited the White House to discuss a national version of the same ban. We'll definitely be discussing that idea more, next week.

Description: This week, Jaime, Vashitta, and Gabe discuss the new CBO estimate on the AHCA. Approximately 23 million Americans would lose health insurance under Paul Ryan's plan. In Ohio, we're continuing to put pressure on Ohio Supreme Court Justice Sharen Kennedy to recuse herself in the Capital Care case. This week, the Columbus Dispatch weighed in: “Justice Maureen O'Connor, however, has publicly stated that Kennedy's speech was appropriate, noting she had not mentioned abortion or any pending case. And Kennedy, in a statement, noted she had appeared before numerous civic organizations to give a similar speech about “the founding of this republic, the Constitution and the separation of powers.” But it's disingenuous to compare a speech to Right to Life — on any topic —with a public address at, say, the Rotary Club or a chamber of commerce. Kennedy should step aside.” Yesterday, the Ohio House Committee on Health held a fourth hearing on HB 149, which stigmatizes abortion providers and bans fetal tissue research that's already not happening in Ohio. The committee removed an awful requirement that physicians providing abortions be labeled as “abortionists” in state law. The remaining bill is still deeply flawed and doesn't bring any benefit to any Ohioan. In good news, Rep. Stephanie Howse and Rep. Michelle Lepore-Hagan introduced HB 234, which creates provisions to protect women and doctors at abortion clinics across the state.
