Liberal “pro choice” messaging has historically conceded the moral high ground (“safe, legal and rare”). Amelia Bonow helped change that as the leader of the Shout Your Abortion movement. In this episode, she shares her journey and discusses why the persuasion war is far less important than educating people on the options they still and will always have, regardless of legality. Elliott didn't know about this—I'm way more into current events than he is—so I decided to inform him during our episode. I wanted him to share his thoughts as a therapist, husband, father, and perhaps most importantly, as a pastor. Abortion is a heavy, sensitive, and painful, subject—at least, it used to be. Clinton claimed it should be, “Safe, legal, and rare.” Now women are encouraged to, “Shout Your Abortion!” What's going on? I share some theories as to how we've arrived at this place—views around Second and Third Wave Feminism and how women have fought for a sexual revolution that fails to serve us, but works for men just fine. We integrate our question, “What is a Man?” throughout the conversation. Elliott asserts that men may have failed women which also relates to the current landscape of women displaying their fielty to a political party by killing their unborn children. Join us for another Love & Life Current Events episode and hear Elliott's og story of getting kicked out of Social Studies during an 8th grade current events unit!

Have you ever thought what #FakeNews might have looked like 200 years ago?  While we may be experiencing a new era of disinformation, the tactics aren't necessarily original. Drawing from their latest book, Stories Are Weapons, journalist and science fiction author Annalee Newitz traces back in history how disinformation, propaganda, and violent threats — all elements of psychological warfare — have evolved into tools of today's domestic culture wars. Newitz argues that America has a deep-rooted history with psychological operations. Beginning with Benjamin Franklin's Revolutionary War–era fake newspaper, then the nineteenth-century wars on Indigenous nations, Newitz follows disinformation to its peak of today's online influence campaigns. Newitz zeroes in on conflicts over race and intelligence, school board fights over LGBTQ students, and campaigns against feminist viewpoints to show how damaging our cultural storytelling can be. Newitz argues that, in each case, specific groups of Americans are singled out and treated as enemies of the state. Newitz also shares their insights from speaking with the researchers and activists who are pushing against these stories, working toward psychological disarmament and cultural peace. Since #FakeNews isn't a new concept, Newitz believes we can learn from history and build a better story. Annalee Newitz is a journalist and author of science fiction and nonfiction, including the national best-seller Four Lost Cities. They write for the New York Times and New Scientist and co-host the Hugo Award–winning podcast Our Opinions Are Correct. They live in San Francisco. Under the Radar with Callie Crossley
Bay Staters' attitudes on abortion reflect nationwide consensus

When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, abortion rights were pushed into a blazing spotlight. The intense fallout from the 2022 decision resulted in new state-sponsored legal limits to abortion access as well as the successful blocking of would-be abortion bans in states like Kansas. Despite the highly charged ongoing national debate about abortion, national surveys show Americans' attitudes remain about the same. A new poll of Bay State residents by GBH and Commonwealth Beacon conducted by the MassINC Polling Group echoes the national polling. MaryRose Mazzola from the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts told Under the Radar she has seen an influx of out-of-state patients since the overturning of Roe v. Wade. She said new abortion bans, “force people to travel or they force people to seek other options and figure this out on their own.”Meanwhile, the Supreme Court will soon rule on how Americans can access mifepristone — a major abortion medication and method used by nearly two-thirds of all who seek abortions. Arizona's highest court ruled earlier this week that an 1864 law banning abortion is now enforceable.Amelia Bonow from Shout Your Abortion argues that the prevalence of abortion is more than what it seems from public opinion polls. “We all know a lot of people who have had abortions,” said Bonow on Under the Radar. “One in three women has at least one abortion in their lifetime and that is a consistent statistic across demographics race, class.”The stigma around abortion is what fuels the national debate says Erin O'Brien, a political science professor from UMass Boston.“The more that Massachusetts and other states can do to talk about how normative of an experience abortion is, that's better for politics and reproductive health for all women, regardless of whether they choose to have an abortion,” said O'Brien.GUESTSErin O'Brien, associate professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts Boston. MaryRose Mazzola, chief external affairs officer for Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts. Amelia Bonow, executive director of Shout Your Abortion, an abortion rights advocacy organization.

This week we discuss American Graffiti! Can this movie drive its way to our 1973 Movie of the Year?Cars, they mean so much to us here in America. Americans love car so much that some have even taken to living in them. There are many images that scream America: Frat Boys drunk chanting USA; a gun being fired into the air after a sporting event win or loss; or simply a small child without healthcare coverage.but perhaps nothing Bellows America quite like the automobile. in a way it's a shame that cars have nearly completely whoopsied the environment, but in another way it's kinda beautiful, once our mothers and nurturers, they have now transformed into our destruction.American Graffiti Embraces the awesome power and the unparalleled majesty of the automobile. It's not simply something that takes us from one place to another, it is a place, an interior, the site of our hopes and our dreams and the sodas we spill right in our silly laps.By a guy who's only claim to fame is the entire Star Wars universe and thus half of my personality, American Graffiti explores a time where things were a little bit simpler, but the world she was changing. folks are graduating and new opportunities pull our young characters thither and yon.but if you look closely, and I hope after tonight's episode You Will, you'll see that there's one very special, perhaps unnoticed character in this movie: That's right America herself. And I guess graffiti; although I don't actually remember there being any graffiti in this movie let alone enough to necessitate being half the title.Visit our websiteUse our Amazon page!Like us!Follow us!Abortion is healthcareWhile Americans overwhelmingly support the right of an individual to make their own decisions about abortion, unfortunately, that right is no longer protected everywhere in the U.S.The Supreme Court overturned Roe versus Wade on June 24th.Abortion is a basic healthcare need for the millions of people who can become pregnant. This week we discuss Coffy! Can this movie blast its way to our 1973 Movie of the Year?Coffy is 91 minutes long…so there you go folks, our 1973 Movie of the Year, for being nearly the conically perfect runtime. We can just run the award over to Ms. Grier's house any time. Literally anytime.Coffy is a simple nurse until her little sister is preyed upon by local drug-selling enthusiasts. Seeking revenge, she finds she has a knack for sort of disassociating and entering a dreamlike state where she is hyper-violent, ruthless, and—it must be said—very cool. Watching this movie makes you feel very American.Over the glorious 91 minutes Coffy, both film and character, swing wildly in tone and focus, going from comically gratuitous nudity, to looney tunes style violence, to emotionally devastating scenes of people fruitlessly begging for their lives or being dragged to death behind a car.At the center of the tornadic violence, nudity, race commentary, gender messaging, shotguns, and tears is Pam Grier. 1973 Pam Grier is on the short list of the most beautiful women to ever exist, and the other women on the list are just different years of Pam Grier. The camera loves Pam Grier, the podcast loves Pam Grier, but Gene Siskel called her performance wooden and awkward. Even years before the overturning of Roe v. Wade, reproductive health and rights organizations were noticing that their abortion content posts were being removed, suspended, shadow banned, flagged, and subject to advertising suspension. Jane Eklund, Tech and Reproductive Rights Fellow at Amnesty International USA, sits down to talk with us about abortion content digital suppression on social media platforms.Across social media platforms, abortion-related content is often removed or interfered with in some way even though it does not violate the social media platform's community guidelines. This can lead to decreased engagement, reach, and visibility for content related to abortion and that is often posted by sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice organizations. Digital platforms have also become spaces were criminalization has increased; police have seized Facebook messages and Google searches to prosecute people for searching for and obtaining  abortion care.LinksAmnesty International USA on FacebookAmnesty International USA on Twitter Digital Defense Fund Take ActionFirst and foremost, follow Amnesty International on Facebook and Twitter.  Follow reproductive health and rights on social media, including their back up accounts. Movie of the Year: 1973Don't Look NowThis week we discuss Don't Look Now! Can this movie chase its way to our 1973 Movie of the Year? After losing their daughter Christine to an accidental drowning, Laura and John Baxter relocate to Venice, Italy so he can restore an old, and somehow fake(??), church. But while there, they encounter a couple of odd sisters, one of who seems to have the gift of second sight. They tell Laura that the late Christine is still with them and this news hits the couple in two very different ways. Laura is suddenly happy and exploring the worlds of spiritualism and religion, but John is skeptical despite the fact that he seems to be having visions of his own of a figure very much like his daughter, moving through the allies of Venice. But John's visions do nothing to diminish his skepticism and this leaves him half blind as he tries to reconcile his existential certainty with his quite hope that he can reconnect with his daughter. But when he gets close to doing this, boom it's a creepy old lady instead and she slits his throat. Grief really is complex! The movie is iconic, but is it scary? And do we remember the right parts of it? Also, what does it say about the horrors of precognition? Two people can encounter the same state of affairs – a crime, a book, a building – and yet their attention, interests, and emotional responses can be radically different. The perspectives of others are closed off from us, and our perspectives are closed off from them … that is until we share our stories. In recent years, social and political movements have utilised the power of storytelling by encouraging the sharing of first-personal accounts. For example, the #MeToo movement and #ShoutYourAbortion campaign encouraged women to share their experiences of sexual violence, harassment, and abortion in order to challenge the ideologies that allow sexism and misogyny to exist. According to Dr Rachel Fraser, these narratives play an indispensable role that can never be performed by theory and statistics. In this episode, we'll be speaking to Dr Fraser, Associate Professor at the University of Oxford, about how personal narratives allow us to challenge social scripts, refocus our attention, and alter the perspectives that, ultimately, shape our lives and institutions. For Fraser – who specialises in a range of fields, including epistemology, aesthetics, philosophy of language, and social and political philosophy – narratives offer a window into our lives and reveal moral truths that serve to critique dangerous ideologies and overcome injustice. Silencing ourselves and others is a surefire way to perpetuate inequality; if we want to bring about a better world, then we must learn to speak and listen. This episode is produced in partnership with the Aesthetics and Political Epistemology Project at the University of Liverpool, led by Katherine Furman, Robin McKenna, and Vid Simoniti and funded by the British Society of Aesthetics. We got ourselves a little drinking, a little underwear semaphore, a bit of fighting marines (booo) in a bus stop bathroom, and even a little trip to the old cat house.Along the way, the boys tour more than just the eastern seaboard, they explore the depths of masculinity, individuality, and duty in the world that may be corrupt and ridiculous, but ultimately must be obeyed. The last detail aims to tell a story that is not grand or sweeping or epic, but instead is quiet small yet somehow perhaps still epic.Visit our websiteUse our Amazon page!Like us!Follow us!Abortion is healthcareWhile Americans overwhelmingly support the right of an individual to make their own decisions about abortion, unfortunately, that right is no longer protected everywhere in the U.S.The Supreme Court overturned Roe versus Wade on June 24th.Abortion is a basic healthcare need for the millions of people who can become pregnant. Movie of the Year: 1973Last Tango in ParisThis week we discuss The Last Tango in Paris! Can a movie this uncomfortable to talk about be our Movie of the Year?Last Tango in Paris is the story of Paul, an extremely recently widowed man whose relationship with his wife was complicated, and Jeanne, a 19 year old who comes to find herself completely dominated and enthralled by him. Meeting by chance one day, they enter into a sexual relationship in which their first encounters are totally anonymous and pretty upsetting to at least one viewer.Jeanne is both parts repulsed and drawn to Paul, and she is also seeing Tom, a young, boring film maker, who seems to think you can do whatever you want if you're making a movie at the same time. Jeanna becomes increasingly desperate to flee from Paul as he becomes increasingly sure that he is in love with her until she shoots and kills him. But all this has been largely lost in the cultural memory of this movie, replaced by one scene where Paul rapes Jean using butter as lubricant.Speaking of the infamous scene, actress Maria Schneider later said “They only told me about it before we had to film the scene and I was so angry. I should have called my agent or had my lawyer come to the set because you can't force someone to do something that isn't in the script, but at the time, I didn't know that." She has also said that this scene traumatized her and stole her youth. Is it possible to reckon with this scene and the damage it caused and then move past that to also say anything meaningful about the movie?Would this scene kinda ruin the movie even without it hurting Schneider as it did?We get into it.Visit our websiteUse our Amazon page!Like us!Follow us!Abortion is healthcareWhile Americans overwhelmingly support the right of an individual to make their own decisions about abortion, unfortunately, that right is no longer protected everywhere in the U.S.The Supreme Court overturned Roe versus Wade on June 24th.Abortion is a basic healthcare need for the millions of people who can become pregnant. Movie of the Year: 1973The Long GoodbyeThis week we discuss The Long Goodbye! Can this film solve the case of what should be our Movie of the Year?Director Robert Altman said he wanted Phillip Marlowe to wake up in the 1970's, a man out of time, and just wander through the twists and turns of The Long Goodbye. Eliot Gould seems to have taken this to heart because he crafted the wanderen-est performance in the history of Hollywood. We start with him waking up at 3AM and heading to his kitchen, and he never loses the energy of someone stumbling around in their robe and slippers, trying to remember what exactly it is they're supposed to do at this time, muttering about how nothing is where it should be and how no one keeps this place nice anymore.Slouching through southern California and parts of Mexico, Marlowe truly travels the highs and lows of 1970s masculinity while sort of shrugging at women and muttering to himself, “It's ok by me.” All while trying to separate friend from foe and being haunted by a titular song. All that, and Books is on the show!Visit our websiteUse our Amazon page!Like us!Follow us!Abortion is healthcareWhile Americans overwhelmingly support the right of an individual to make their own decisions about abortion, unfortunately, that right is no longer protected everywhere in the U.S.The Supreme Court overturned Roe versus Wade on June 24th.Abortion is a basic healthcare need for the millions of people who can become pregnant. In this week's episode of Defending Faith, Family, and Freedom, Gary Bauer calls out the neo-Marxist organization, Shout Your Abortion, who has recently purchased billboards along Interstate 55 that say, “God's Plan Includes Abortion.” This freeway takes travelers through the heart of the Bible Belt and on into Illinois. Bauer also points out that when pro-abortion politicians claim that no one approves of abortion up and to natural childbirth, they are bald-faced lying! These same politicians cannot name one form of abortion they would legally prevent. Bauer admonishes American pastors who say abortion is a political issue that doesn't belong in their churches. He calls on these church teachers to WAKE UP to the error of their ways! These stories and other bizarre neo-Marxist doozies are featured in today's podcast.

Movie of the Year: 1973Paper MoonThis week we discuss Paper Moon! Can it rise high enough to become our Movie of the Year?Paper Moon is a fun little romp about a shady guy and his daughter, seamlessly played by a shady guy and enemy of the show, Ryan O'Neal, and his real-life 10-year-old daughter, Tatum O'Neal, with whom he has always had a strained relationship. We spend most of the show getting into the why's, the no, really why's, and the man, but really, like why's of this decision, but let's somehow put this aside for now.The movie itself follows a conman and his maybe/probably daughter as they scam their way across the Midwest, which is basically destroyed and depopulated by a sad-sounding thing called the Depression. Shot in black and white and an obvious love letter to old timey stories, Paper Moon is constantly walking the line between charming and bleak. We discuss the legacy of the film and whether it is possible to love it despite the pain it caused. In a groundbreaking move, California is advancing the Right to Safety Amendment, a major initiative championed by Governor Gavin Newsom. The leftist activist group Shout Your Abortion has posted six billboards across Interstate 55, which spans through five strongly pro-life states. The first day of the new cashless bail system delivered “absurd” and “incoherent” results for deep blue Illinois as far as McHenry County state's attorney Patrick Kenneally is concerned. Illinois officials are investigating what appears to be a quadruple homicide in a small, quiet neighborhood outside of Chicago after police discovered the bodies of a family of four in their home. New York City is considering a measure that would essentially remove statues of Founding Fathers such as George Washington, all while facing a migrant crisis costing taxpayers billions. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) slammed President Joe Biden this week for failing to give his top challenger in the Democratic Party — Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — Secret Service protection after a man showed up at one of his campaign events with a loaded gun. President Joe Biden's Department of Justice faced backlash this week after a new report revealed that federal prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into whether Tesla CEO Elon Musk — who is an opponent of the administration — may have received personal benefits from Tesla that the company failed to disclose.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

But here's something cool about him: he shoots arrows real good and takes money from the rich to give to the poor by reusing old footage and fleshing out the runtime with a series of looping chase scenes. With half the characters being from England and half being from the American south, Robin hood allows us to imagine a fantasy land where public domain characters move through something approximating a story, while we all hold our breath hoping this isn't one of those super-racist old Disney movies featured in some multi-episode podcast. In what can only be described as a series of scenes falling in more-or-less chronological order until each has played, we see Robin hood go from a guy in the forest, to a guy in an archery tournament, to a guy in a bunch of weird outfits, to a guy in a bunch of people's fantasies. All that, and we breath into the mic a lot!Visit our websiteUse our Amazon page!Like us!Follow us!Abortion is healthcareWhile Americans overwhelmingly support the right of an individual to make their own decisions about abortion, unfortunately, that right is no longer protected everywhere in the U.S.The Supreme Court overturned Roe versus Wade on June 24th.Abortion is a basic healthcare need for the millions of people who can become pregnant. Now, try to stay with me because this is probably going to blow your mind a little bit, but the cops in Serpico aren't concerned with making the world a better place or with protecting the little guy (pause here to allow the reader to go, "Say what?" and scratch their noggin). Instead, they focus on draining money from everything and everyone they come in contact, relocating said money safely into their own pockets. Hard to believe, but it's right in the film, folks. It follows the struggle of two women to make it in this wacky world. One, Grace Collier, is an intrepid reporter for the Staten Island Panorama, trying to get a scoop, the other is model and aspiring actress Danielle Brenton, who is trying to have it all while not having all her marbles. After a simple misunderstanding causes Danielle to go a little wacky and kill her recent date, Grace gets pulled into the story she was always hoping for. But she is doing a lot less reporting on the story and a lot more being the very center of it before long.Is Danielle the killer? Or is it her nutty sister, Dominique? It turns out the sisters used to be joined at the hip, literally, but now Dominique—the evil one, since that is science—is back and stabbier than ever. Also involved is a creepy looking, and therefore obviously evil, ex husband/mad scientist/guy who brings a book to sit in the audience of a TV show?? Too freaky. What happens next is kind of anyone's guess as the movie gives way to madness, hypnotism, dream sequences, and a string of names that can only be the people who made the movie.Visit our websiteUse our Amazon page!Like us!Follow us!Abortion is healthcareWhile Americans overwhelmingly support the right of an individual to make their own decisions about abortion, unfortunately, that right is no longer protected everywhere in the U.S.The Supreme Court overturned Roe versus Wade on June 24th.Abortion is a basic healthcare need for the millions of people who can become pregnant. And, you're welcome. And, we are so sorry. 1973 was 50 years ago y'all, and it's the ancientiest season we've ever done. Much has changed since these dimly remembered times. Unfortunately, when you look back 50 years, half the stuff has changed, but it's actually changed for the better and then back for the worse again. We are overturning landmark social movements from this time, people! But still things were weird in 1973. By our own way of counting decades here at Movie of the Year, 1973 is basically the first true year of the 70s, because the first couple years of any decade tend to seem much more like the time that preceded them. Think of your ultimate picture of the 60s. That is exactly what 1970 looked like. Do the same with the 50s; you'll find it holds up.However, this is 1973 and the freakin seventies have started. Movie of the Year: 2002Catch Me If You CanCan Catch Me If You Can con its way to our 2002 Movie of the Year?Catch Me If You Can is a Steven Spielberg joint, so you know we are going to get rowdy on this one. Steve Spiels has meant so much to the show. An early Hall of Fame inductee, one of the most important voices from our childhood, and a talented filmmaker to boot, this guy has got it all goin on as far as we are concerned. But does that mean this particular movie, Catch Me If You Can, is any good? Hmmmm. And when it comes to star power, you know this movie delivers, serving up Leo and a side o' Hanx! (Can someone put a chef's kiss emoji here?-Greg) However, do these guys create synergy, or do we simply get two strong, parallel performances? If I answered that here, I could get fired, but listen to the show because you probably should know. And it wouldn't be an episode of Movie of the Year without as jawing about ladies. Boys. Love. Ladies. But do they? Or do they love the idea of ladies that culture has tried to hallucinate into existence? Dunno! And you know we have a sack full of awards to bestow! Movie of the Year: 2002Finale Part ThreeIt is time to finish picking 2002's Movie of the Year in our 2002 Finale Part Three! We work really hard on each of the seasons of this show. We do it because it means a lot to us and because that is what the movies deserve. The 2002 season was even more work than we usually do—it was intense. Yet, here we are, at the end of it, and it's hard not to be just a little sad. 2002 was a bonkers year and the movies are full of a sense of overwrought pride and mounting, undirected aggression. The movies are fun but sometimes in a way that seems manic. A smiling face turned away from a burning house. But we need to move on. A new season awaits us, full of promise, movies, and lost episodes. As we turn out the lights on this season, we say goodbye to some of our favorite films. Who can forget the pure entertainment of Chicago? The pluck and artistic courage of Russian Ark? And I know we will never forget all the things we said about this season's very special lost episode recipient, Unfaithful. And you know we have a sack full of Mooties to bestow! Movie of the Year: 2002Finale Part TwoIt is time to continue picking 2002's Movie of the Year in our 2002 Finale Part Two!As we discussed last time, fifteen great movies (and, yes, one stinkeroo) made their way into the sweet sixteen. And now it is time to take that number DOWN. To an even LOWER NUMBER. There are a lot to pick from, so you figure it out. Lookin' at you, eight; feels like you're on deck.Maybe Bourne Identity will do some of his cool spy stuff and make his way to the last part of our finale. 25th Hour might come in and take down some strong competition in a way we'll never forget. And The Two Towers might remind us why there is only one lord when it comes to our rings. And it's not just the movies that can win and lose because we are giving out our podcast-famous Mooties as well, celebrating the best in performance, artistry, and being a huge, huge jerk. All this AND the stuff that I remembered but cheekily neglected to mention!Visit our websiteUse our Amazon page!Join our Patreon team! Movie of the Year: 2002The Finale, Pt. 1It is time to start picking 2002's Movie of the Year in our 2002 Finale Part One!It seems like just yesterday we started the 2002 season, but as they say: time flies when your castin' pods. This year we embraced just how many movies there are in any given year. Because there are so many, we opened up our brackets (and our hearts) to 16 movies.I know what you are thinking, you must have just opened up the floodgates and invited all the stinkeroos to the party along with the usual eight brilliant movies. However that is not what happened; seven great movies (and just one stinkeroo) made their way into the sweet sixteen. And now it is time to take that number DOWN.Maybe Battle Royale will slay the competition and move on to the next round. Perhaps Spider-Man (yeah just the one, kinda weird) will web-sling his way on. Personally, I could see Morvern Callar slicing up the competition. And it's not just the movies that can win and lose because we are giving out our podcast-famous Mooty awards as well, celebrating the best in performance and artistry. All this AND the stuff that I forgot to mention!Visit our websiteUse our Amazon page!Join our Patreon team! Movie of the Year: 2002Morvern CallarIs Morvern Callar too obvious a choice to become 2002 Movie of the Year?Stop any yahoo on the street and ask them to bleat out a movie from 2002 and the first one that is going to spring into 90% of their brains is Morvern Callar. MorvernMania was everywhere is 2002, and if you don't remember that, don't let on because it's deeply strange and it might indicate that you are secretly a weirdo. In this episode we really get into what makes the titular Movern tick, probably more than any other episode we have done (so far). Why does she make the choices she makes, and what are we to think of her behavior? Probably it's fine, to be honest. You gotta let women hack up the bodies they're gonna hack up. If they have to explain every little thing to you, none of the parts of this body are going to get buried in the woods. And how about director-writer Lynne Ramsay? We discuss what she brings to this meticulously paced experience. Also, we look at how the movie tackles issues of class, gender, and truth. That's just one segment where we tackle those, and I promise, they stay tackled by the time we're done. All this AND the stuff that I forgot to mention!Visit our websiteUse our Amazon page!Join our Patreon team! Jenny Brown is an organizer with National Women's Liberation, the author of Without Apology: The Abortion Struggle Now, and a former collaborator with the Redstockings. We talk about the how radical feminism/women's liberation went from a splinter of the New Left to shaping the course of women's struggles around the world, how their politics are misunderstood today, how their demands for repealing all laws on abortion was recuperated by a supreme court in need of legitimacy, and why the political class today strips those rights.
