People kept telling us to watch this cult classic holiday romcom. Not sure if that was because they thought we'd enjoy it or because we might have opinions on it. And oh boy, do we have opinions on this. Lest you call us long-winded, we're actually discussing two films in this two-parter, Love, Actually and Red Nose Day, Actually, the pseudo-sequel from 2017. In this first part we discuss some of the reasons this film might have enduring popularity, the clever (or lazy) writing structure Richard Curtis employs, and the Colin Firth, Billy Mack, and Kiera Knightley plots. Joel also discusses his theory that this film is secretly winking at the audience over how obvious/lazy it is at times but Naomi refuses to buy his Adam Sandler-based proof. All credit to StudioCanal for use of their poster. We strongly urge our listeners to support the work of Planned Parenthood by donating here. For the indefinite future all Patreon donations will go to them, NARAL, or other orgs doing good work across the nation.Interested in starting your own podcast? Earlier this week, the pro-abortion group NARAL tweeted in tribute of the Supreme Court decision that mandated “same-sex marriage” on all of America:  “Eight years ago, Obergefell v. Hodges recognized the right to same-sex marriage. But the fight to start or grow our families—however and whenever we want—continues.”  “Same-sex marriage” was sold with the claim that with birth control and abortion, modern marriage had been divorced from procreation in any meaningful sense. “Love is love,” the line went, though even if morality is left out of the discussion and only male-female relationships produce children.  So, the word “spouse” was redefined in law. Now, according to NARAL, true equality requires that inherently sterile relationships be able to have children “however and whenever [they] want.”  Science is busy making it easier to access this want, and if California lawmakers get their way, insurers will have to cover pregnancy treatments for same-sex couples.  Redefining words has consequences. Redefining “spouse” meant redefining “parent,” and redefining a child as a “right.”

How does the overturning of Roe v. Wade demonstrate the control and devaluation of those who are and may be impacted by pregnancy? What is at risk beyond abortion rights and access in the United States, and what is the global impact of this decision, as precedent? Today, we are deeply honored to be in conversation with Karen Mulhauser. She is the first National Executive Director of the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL), now known as NARAL Pro-Choice America. From 1970-73, she trained family planning professionals in federally funded programs in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska. When she moved to Washington, DC in 1973, Karen was hired to open the DC office of NARAL and the following year, she was asked to be the Executive Director. In this position, she helped grow the membership 20-fold, started chapters throughout the country, and started the NARAL Foundation and political action committee. Her experiences, expertise and activism through these decades, including her recent (June and July 2022) testimony before the DC Council Committee on Government Operations and Facilities and the Committee on Housing and Executive Administration Joint Public Hearing on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women Amendment Act of 2022, exemplifies her continued commitment to protecting the freedom to choose whether or not to continue a pregnancy. She has spoken poignantly to the United States never ratifying the United Nation's Women's Treaty, CEDAW, and advocacy for Washington, DC to be the next city to ratify the amendment, through the Cities for CEDAW campaign. Karen, as other women, who have fought and advocated for these rights and freedom since the foundation of NARAL, are courageously sharing their personal stories of survivorship. Mustachio McGraw returns again to blah blah blah. To offset our desire to not discuss the book we bide time by sampling the worst soda we've ever tasted and reveal our new power mantra for the year, 2023: 20-Rigatoni (It makes more sense in context). There's some sexist statements about how men communicate, some poorly explained filler about male archetypes and how women can use knowledge of them to improve their relationships, some junk about the type of guys women should always avoid, and some stuff about online dating but neither Naomi or Joel are really feeling it. It's both too general to be useful advice and too specific at times to be helpful in most people's relationships. Also, this last part makes it clear he and Steve Harvey don't differ too much in how they think of women and gender essentialism, so we're not giving the benefit of the doubt we gave in prior sections. We will seriously entertain suggestions on how to destroy this book in the hopes no one else ever has to read it. We strongly urge our listeners to support the work of Planned Parenthood by donating here. For the indefinite future all Patreon donations will go to them, NARAL, or other orgs doing good work across the nation.Interested in starting your own podcast? Dr Phil is back to give out more advice, some of it weirdly helpful, some of it horribly sexist. We do our best to differentiate the man and our opinions on him from Steve Harvey, but given the similarities between their content and facial hair we do mess up a few times. Our apologies to Mr McGraw. In these sections Philip tells readers how to work past their trauma from prior relationships, describes how every woman is either nice or sexy, talks about the importance of marketing your good qualities when dating, explains the "fundamental differences" between women and men, and quizzes readers on whether they can identify common relationship myths. We have no issues with any of these statements and do not at any point object to the content. We strongly urge our listeners to support the work of Planned Parenthood by donating here. We spent most of 2022 bagging on Steve Harvey so we figured we'd find a new daytime talkshow host enemy for 2023. Enter Dr Phil, America's favorite substitute for proper mental health education and treatment. After making a splash with his advice show in 2002 he dropped this 2005 gem, a comprehensive guide for women to find their happily ever after. Or at least that was the goal.In Part 1 we dig into Phil McGraw's weird controversies and sketchy therapy style, how he suggests women think about dating, and the (actually maybe helpful?) lists he provides for visualizing your future partner.  It's not baaad advice, but there's enough weirdness to justify us taking shots here and in future episodes. We strongly urge our listeners to support the work of Planned Parenthood by donating here. This time we get through a little more than 10% of this "zine," discussing a weird mishmash of philosophy that tries to use the trolley problem to explain why abortion is bad while also making SmashMouth references, the argument that patriarchy is why women feel the need to get abortions, and the somewhat nonsensical claim that pregnancy isn't a danger to women. As regular listeners know, the format of the Renoites podcast is generally long form interviews lasting about an hour. I really like this format because it lets me get into more substantive discussions and learn a lot. This episode is a little different, and is the fourth of 5 bonus episodes recorded at Northern Nevada Pride on 7/23/22 in Reno, Nevada. At the festival, I set up a mobile recording studio with big comfy chairs and invited friends, former guests, folks from various nonprofits, and even a couple passersby to sit down and record quick interviews to share what they do and the things that matter to them. Each of these five bonus episodes will contain a handful of mini interviews. I'm very grateful to everyone who took some time to sit down and chat at the festival and am excited to share these conversations with you. Bonus Episode 4 features: Kyril Plaskon is the President of the Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance and a former guest on Renoites (check out his full episode from last year here). Ky stopped by to talk about the massive changes to our multi-modal infrastructure downtown as Reno has embarked on a pilot project to explore new bike lanes and more. TMBA is also excited about upcoming events including bringing national and international multi-modal infrastructure experts to the Reno area in the coming months. Eric Hare from the Life Change Center talked about the recovery services provided by that organization, and specifically about the importance of narcan in saving lives. Narcan can be administered to people suffering an overdose to block the opioid receptors in the brain long enough to obtain additional medical attention.  Rosie Gully is an organizer for NARAL, a national pro-choice organization dedicated to women's rights and abortion access. Rosie talked about what NARAL does to help endorse candidates who will defend those rights and hold them accountable during the legislative session. Damien Maze is from Reno Satanic, a local satanic group, and stopped by to explain what satanism is all about (it's not demons and spooky things). Satanists believe in freedom from arbitrary authority, and being ourselves openly.  Chris Davin was visiting from Henderson Nevada and talked about the efforts of Henderson Equality to create the Henderson Pride Fest in the second-biggest city in Nevada. It was great to make some connections with people from other part of the state! Thank you so much for listening! This is the fourth of 5 bonus episodes. I hope you enjoy this change of pace and different format. Regular episodes return on August 30! Let me know what you think at conor@renoites.com

[As always, this little blog/newsletter is how I pay my bills, and I would be so grateful if you support my writing with a paid subscription.]My working theory—and I'm being generous by calling it a mere “working theory”—is that a sizable chunk of cisgender people (that is, people who are not transgender) truly do not understand the controversy over trans-inclusion in pregnancy discussions.Several years ago, pre-pandemic, I gave a talk to a law firm in D.C. about trans visibility, clarifying much of the understandable—but easily preventable—confusion over trans identities and rights. The talk went well! It was collaborative and informative, but afterward, someone in attendance walked up to me and, with the slightest tinge of annoyance or aggravation in their voice, asked if they could pose a “potentially insensitive question” to me.I wish I had a dollar for every time I've had those three words put to me since coming out.The person's question: “Can you get pregnant?”Now, personally, I have no desire to be pregnant, and as much as I love playing Auntie Charlotte to my friends' children and generally find kids adorable, I don't want any of my own. So, this question wasn't insensitive on that count, but the directness and tone of this person's voice when they asked that question has stayed with me, even years later.I still remember the look on their face, shades of subtle anger, and I couldn't tell if they were asking this question to make a point (as though it couldn't be made in a more polite way and also: why) or if they were trying to hurt my feelings. Maybe both.I think most trans and nonbinary people are forced to make a quick decision when confronted with this kind of unnecessary hostility. We are forced to pick our battles—because there are simply far too many to negotiate daily—and decide if this is a moment worth engaging with our authentic feelings and to what level, be that anger or dismay or frustration or exhaustion. If there is a large spectrum of possible responses bookended on one side by “be nice and diplomatic” and “let this a*****e know where they can stick their unnecessary question” on the other, I try my very best to yield to a polite median.Of course, I had just given a productive talk, which required a lot of vulnerability, and I realized that my nerves were, perhaps, too raw to hew a dignified anger that illustrates as much as it admonishes. And I made a choice to swallow my own anger and be diplomatic, a choice I have made countless times in the past and will make countless times in the future.“No, I cannot pregnant,” I told them. “I don't have a uterus. I also don't menstruate. Like all trans woman and some cis women, I have no idea what it's like to experience these things. I try my best to be an effective ally to women who can and do experience pregnancy and menstruation.”I don't know if my tone had its own tinge of anger, but I would like to believe I kept a soft restraint. They looked taken aback and didn't know what to say in response. Their shoulders seemed to relax, their posture softened, their eyes dimmed from the alert status with which they had approached. They had come looking to have their own anger and annoyance validated, maybe to debate me, I guess, and suddenly, much to their surprise, they had nothing to be angry about.“Okay,” they said, softly. “That makes sense. I appreciate your time. Thank you for answering.”I had a question of my own for them and asked if I could pose it. They had almost seemed a tad apologetic, and I got the sense they wanted to make up for it by being amenable.“Yes, of course, happy to answer.”I asked: “How often do you point out the importance of ensuring that trans men and nonbinary people have access to the reproductive health care they need?”They stared back in confusion, and a few moments passed without either of us saying anything. And then, some kind of switch was flipped, dots were quickly connected, and they seemed to realize, in that moment, that there are trans men and nonbinary people, having uteruses, who get pregnant, who menstruate, who need access to necessary medical care.“Oh…”, they said. “Uh…”I didn't say anything — just waited for them to answer.“Honestly, I didn't know that. That's good to know.”They thanked me for the talk, shook my hand, and went on their way.On Monday, Professor Khiara Bridges, who teaches law at Berkeley and has quickly become my favorite person ever, was testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee about abortion restrictions when Sen. Josh Hawley pursued a line of questioning that attempted to weaponize trans issues against Democrats, as we've frequently now seen with the embarrassing and pedantic and childish “what is a woman” query that they believe, for some reason, is the ultimate gotcha.Because that's the other—and dare I say, quite troubling—thing about all this: why do these people insist that having the ability to become pregnant is solely what makes a woman?Going through menopause? Not a woman, to these people.Trouble conceiving? Not woman-ing enough. Step it up, apprentice lady.Gotten a hysterectomy or born without a uterus? Revocation of your membership among women, by their code.Don't have children? Don't want children? You're not a real woman, and you won't be a real woman until you're pushing out a fleshy container of germ-infested Baby Shark fandom. That's what they think.Prof. Bridges was having none of it and let Hawley know real quick how unnecessary and bankrupt and, yes, transphobic, it is to pursue that line of questioning. Notice how Prof. Bridges didn't mention trans women at all. Because trans women have nothing to do with this. Trans women cannot become pregnant. That we're even alluded to in this whole discussion is absurd. And yet, I find that even many educated adults don't understand this very simple concept, like last month when a reporter with whom I was discussing this with genuinely asked me why the abortion rights movement is being forced to include trans women. What?He honestly was under the impression that trans people were demanding that Planned Parenthood and NARAL and all the other amazing repro orgs acknowledge that trans women are capable of pregnancy. I asked him if he meant trans men and explained the whole having-of-the-uterus thing, and wouldn't you know it? His voice alighted with sudden insight over the phone and I heard that familiar “Ohhh…”This has happened far too much lately to believe it's an anomaly. I think there are numerous cis adults, however well educated, who are walking around with the belief that trans activists are saying trans women can get pregnant. (For all you geniuses out there, we cannot.)I also think there are numerous bigots who understand perfectly what it means to have a uterus and that trans men get pregnant, but for some reason, trans men threaten their worldview so much—their shattered, pathetic, weak-ass worldview—that to accurately recognize trans men as men might undermine every stubborn vestige of traditional, thin-skinned masculinity that makes their tiny and uninspiring world go ‘round.Folks, just let trans people exist in our own authentic skins without said existence needing to somehow be a referendum on your own. I can't emphasize enough how much reasonable adults in your day-to-day life—the vast majority of them cisgender—honestly feel second hand embarrassment when they watch you do this. And the reason they don't tell you that is because they don't wanna be the one who breaks the bad news. Please don't embarrass yourself. Not only did we produce an episode a week for an entire year, but we also somehow got the GODFATHER of motorsport and the only driver that Matt's dad knows -- Mario Andretti -- as our guest. Find out how he adapted to different types of driving, what porpoising was like in the 70s, and who his favorite hot lap celeb is.UPDATE: We've somehow found a group of people to hate more than Ferrari -- the majority of the U,S. supreme court. Because this episode was recorded before the devastating decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, we didn't talk about our support for body autonomy and necessary health care. If you'd like to, and are able to donate, here are some orgs that are working to protect these rights and helping people trying to access care: National Network of Abortion Funds, Planned Parenthood, or NARAL.Follow us: TikTok | YouTube | Twitter | Instagram

How to Talk about Reproductive Freedom: My Conversation with Dina Montemarano

I was NOT planning on dropping this episode until much later in the summer, but within a few days of recording this conversation, a draft opinion on the overturning of Roe vs. Wade was leaked to Politico. My intention from the beginning was to talk with an expert about the language around reproductive freedom. Because here's what I know for sure:  Women cannot compete economically and/or provide for our families if we lose our right to determine when (or whether) to have children. I don't know any other way to say it.  And yet somehow, despite the simple truth of this statement, we're at the precipice of losing that right. It makes me wonder if we've been talking about this all wrong. So … to help take us deeper into the language and messaging of reproductive freedom (and how we might protect it), my guest this week is Dina Montemarano, Research Director at NARAL Pro-Choice America, where she leads messaging, opposition, and disinformation-focused research on abortion access and the anti-choice movement.  Prior to NARAL, Dina worked on Senator Warren's and Vice President Harris' Presidential campaigns, and at Global Health Strategies, where she managed global health communication programs for the Gates Foundation. She has a BA from the University of Notre Dame and a Masters in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School. Dina is a wonder woman, and was incredibly kind and patient with me while I had a good cry during this conversation. To find out how you can donate to pro-choice candidates in the midterms, here is a list of political candidates working to protect reproductive freedom in the US. One small note … for reasons beyond my ken, you have to have already donated to NARAL to be able to use this system. Just donate as little as $1 to NARAL and then you'll be able to use this link effectively and efficiently to support multiple candidates doing this incredibly important work. As always, the most powerful thing you can do is VOTE. Do NOT sit out midterms. Vote for candidates that prioritize women's health. We are not a special niche interest group. We make up half of the population. Stay strong. Shine on.   https://bit.ly/NARAL_LINK

Then (11:26) we get into the American President, a rom com about a suspiciously popular president falling in love with a  “professional political operative.” We touch on political movies' tendency to prize rhetoric over action, the importance of coalitions, and the outsized impact of the spotted owl (yes, that spotted owl). There's also a LOT of West Wing talk. The roots of the modern feminist movement can be traced directly back to a single book published nearly 60 years ago. It was called The Feminine Mystique. Its author was a young would-be journalist named Betty Friedan. It is widely regarded as the spark that lit the fire of the feminist movement. But that was only the beginning for Betty Friedan. Three years later, she co-founded the National Organization for Women, and was its first president. She also helped establish the National Womens Political Caucus. And she founded what was then known as the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws, known today simply as NARAL. In 2000, Friedan wrote a memoir called Life So Far.
