LeSean Shaw – VP, Empowered AI It was the promise to not only transform a part of Toledo's Uptown area, but also to bring change and create career opportunities for Toledo's underserved communities by teaching people to code. However, the promise, the plan, the future wasn't to be - as the powers behind the west coast tech hub operation Bitwise were found to be robbing Peter to pay Paul to keep the operation running, duping investors, including ProMedica, out of thousands or even millions of dollars. Since then, the former CEOs of Bitwise were charged with fraud and 18 local employees were furloughed. But now, some of those 18 former employees are determined to keep grinding for this city they love and the field that they know so well. Kate Fineske - Executive Director - National Museum of the Great Lakes The National Museum of the Great Lakes is celebrating 10 years in the Toledo area, but they aren't growing complacent. In fact, the NMGL is about to undertake an expansion. Over the past ten years, the museum has captivated visitors with its diverse array of exhibits, featuring visual, audiovisual, and hands-on experiences spanning centuries of Great Lakes history. From the era of fur trading, to the challenges of the underground railroad, and the exploits of rum runners, the museum offers a comprehensive journey through the pivotal moments that have shaped the Great Lakes into the vital resource it is today.

We must remain steadfast in our desire as healthcare professionals to ensure that patients who lack access to safe and stable housing are not forgotten. In this special bonus episode of the Race to Value, you will learn how organizations can build alliances to serve the public good and build hope in marginalized communities through investments in housing.  There is strong evidence characterizing housing's relationship to health. Housing stability, quality, safety, and affordability all affect health outcomes, as do physical and social characteristics of neighborhoods.  Lack of housing security leads to increased mortality (lower life expectancy); physical traumas, crime, and gun violence; long-standing impacts on psychological well-being (depression, anxiety, suicide); increased ED and inpatient hospital utilization; increased pediatric asthma and chronic disease burden; and substance use disorder.  The impact of housing on health is now being widely considered by policy makers as it is one of the most researched social determinants of health.  Needless to say, housing interventions by healthcare organizations and community partners is the future of value-based care! In this episode, you will learn about how ProMedica (a non-profit health and wellness organization of 11 hospitals and a physician network of 2,600 physicians) formed a community-based housing investment partnership with the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative (GHHI). Their comprehensive, flexible approach to addressing unhealthy housing is being shown to improve health, academic success, job retention, neighborhood safety, and intergenerational wealth transfer all for a relatively low per-person cost. Joining us in this interview is Ruth Ann Norton (President & CEO, GHHI) and Rachel Krausman (Vice President, National Strategy and Partnerships, ProMedica). We invite every value-minded professional listening to this conversation to join in your own community effort to care for your most vulnerable patients. A healthy home leads to a healthy life! Approximately 40-60% of our current state of health is driven by non-clinical factors. How much money we have in the bank, the depth and breadth of our social support network and the stress of finding reliable childcare all have impact on our health and risk for disease.   Organizations looking to improve the health of their workforce would be wise to keep this in mind – understand and address basic need challenges exist among your workforce – before focusing on improvement of individual health risk factors. My guests for this episode understand the power of helping individuals meet basic needs.   Kate Sommerfeld is the President of the Social Determinants of Health Institute and she is joined by Randy Oostra, President and CEO of Promedica Health System based in Toledo, Ohio.  Listen in as Kate and Randy walk through the steps they have taken to provide resources that address basic needs to those they serve and to their own employees.  They share the lessons they've learned through their partnership with Kumanu provider of the Resourceful app the two organizations developed together to help organizations understand what's truly holding employees back from being present, productive, and resilient.
