On this edition of Fascinating Ohio, we're talking with some Ohioans about food, bats and crafts.
In the swirling vortex of MLB free agency speculation, few names ignite Ohioan hearts quite like Kyle Schwarber's. The burly left-handed slugger, fresh off another cannonball season with the Phillies—where he mashed 47 homers and drew walks like a magnet—has suddenly become the belle of the Reds' rumor ball. As the 2025-26 offseason heats up, Cincinnati's front office, under Nick Krall's steady hand, is reportedly eyeing a seismic shift: luring Schwarber home to the banks of the Ohio River. Born in Middletown, just a stone's throw from Great American Ball Park, Schwarber's Midwestern roots make this feel less like a signing and more like a homecoming barbecue. The chatter kicked off in late October, fueled by anonymous whispers from "NL Central insiders" at the Winter Meetings prelude. Picture this: Schwarber, the ultimate three-true-outcomes beast (home runs, walks, strikeouts), slotting into the Reds' revamped lineup alongside Elly De La Cruz's fireworks and Matt McLain's grit. Great American, with its short porches and hitter-friendly confines, could turn Schwarber into a 50-homer demigod, boosting a rotation still smarting from Hunter Greene's injury woes. Rumor has it the Reds are dangling a five-year, $125 million pact—player-friendly opt-outs included—to outbid suitors like the Cubs (ironic family reunion?) or Yankees, who crave his October thunder. But oh, the caveats! Schwarber's defensive "adventures" in left field—more adventure than acumen—might clash with the Reds' youth movement. And at 33, is he the long-term anchor or a bridge to contention? Fans in Cincy dream of him launching moonshots over the river, channeling Pete Rose's fire with modern power. Yet skeptics point to Philly's reluctance to let him walk, given his clubhouse glue role. If it happens, it's poetic: the Middletown Hammer returning to swing for the fences in red. For now, it's all smoke and mirrors—delicious, Reds-tinted smoke. Will it ignite? Stay tuned; the hot stove's just warming up. Music from #InAudio: https://inaudio.org/ Track Name Holy (Trap). In episode 148, we talk with our friend Dr. Cara Jacob about why she's stepping up to run for the Ohio State Senate. From property taxes to public schools and healthcare, she shares what's driving her campaign and how she hopes to create a fairer future for all Ohio families.Cara was raised in a small town with a close-knit family who taught her the values of hard work, integrity, and caring for others. Her passion for helping people led her to pursue medicine and ultimately become a neurologist. In that role, she's had the privilege of caring for patients and families from communities across Ohio. She is also a wife and the proud mom of two wonderful children, experiences that have deepened her commitment to building a better future for all families.Beyond her medical career, Cara has been an advocate for policies that expand access to healthcare, strengthen our public schools, protect our democratic process, keep our communities safe, and ensure government works for everyday Ohioans—not just the wealthy and well-connected. That advocacy, coupled with growing concerns over the extreme legislation and corruption coming out of our statehouse, is what inspired her to run for the Ohio State Senate in Senate District 7.She believes we can make Ohio a stronger, fairer place for families by advancing common-sense policies that lift up all Ohioans—ensuring opportunity and dignity for everyone, not just the few at the top. The Ohio Redistricting Commission adopted a bipartisan congressional map last week, but some who voted for it are clear they consider it the best of bad options. In this week's Ohio Statehouse Scoop, Host Jo Ingles reports on the fight behind Ohio's new map and how it is energizing another call for change in the redistricting process. Later, Ohio Public Media's Statehouse News Bureau Reporter Sarah Donaldson and Bureau Chief Karen Kasler weigh in on the controversial redistricting process and bring you the latest on fights over voting rights and hemp regulations. Plus, we'll talk about what Ohio is doing to provide food assistance to Ohioans affected by the federal government shutdown in this week's Ohio Statehouse Scoop.
Nearly 9,000 state employees notified of possible furloughs; there was a close call in the air at Cleveland Hopkins airport; two bills touting property tax relief may not actually provide it; heating assistance is now available for low-income Ohioans.
SNAP benefits, also known as food stamps, for roughly 1.4 million Ohioans could run out on Nov. 1 if the government shutdown continues.
Gov. DeWine signs executive order providing up to $25M for Ohioans who are losing SNAP benefits; Akron man will be sentenced and has to register as a sex offender after a hidden camera was found in his Hocking Hills rental cabin; 13-year-old accused of vandalizing a statue outside of Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati; state redistricting commission adopts a map of newly drawn congressional districts.

Host Radell Lewis breaks down every candidate running for Ohio Governor in 2026, cutting through the noise to give you the facts that matter. What You'll Learn: Vivek Ramaswamy (Republican) is proposing to eliminate Ohio's state income tax and lower property taxes to reverse the exodus of young Ohioans. He's pushing for increased energy production through fracking and nuclear plants, K-12 education improvements, tougher penalties for repeat criminal offenders (including psychiatric institutionalization), and promises to restore "open dialogue" in Ohio politics. Philip Funderburg (Republican) is a 10th-generation Ohioan and insurance agent from Englewood running on a deportation-focused platform. He's targeting "anchor babies, Haitians, and illegals" in his campaign messaging and frequently posts about Ramaswamy. While aligned with Trump's agenda, Funderburg wants to release the Epstein files. Jacob Chiara (Democrat) is a former Republican now running as a Democrat because he says the GOP "no longer exists" as he knew it. His platform includes boosting small businesses, fully funding public schools, expanding healthcare access, ending pay-to-play politics, and investing in crime prevention. Chiara criticizes both Ramaswamy and Acton, positioning himself as an outsider tired of "politics as usual." Dr. Amy Acton (Democrat), Ohio's former health director, is prioritizing lowering everyday costs for Ohioans including groceries, gas, healthcare, and energy bills. She's committed to fully funding public schools, strengthening Ohio's economy, improving public safety, and addressing corruption in the Statehouse that she says "caters to billionaires and special interests." In episode 137, we are joined by Bryan Hambley, who is running for Ohio Secretary of State. Tune in to learn more about him and what he would do if elected to help Ohio have free and fair elections!Bryan grew up on a small family farm in a tight-knit community where he saw the impact of people coming together. When he was a child, the state tried to shut down his town's small public school. The town of 800 people got into their trucks, drove to the state capitol, and made their voices heard to save the school, the heart of their community. His parents taught him this was democracy at its best: a community rallying to do together what no one could do alone.Ever since, Bryan has committed his life to fighting for what's right. He has organized communities around key issues:* Fighting against pharmaceutical companies using their money to buy influence in hospitals.* Bringing critical health care to underserved communities.* Standing up for the right to vote and be heard. As a cancer doctor who cares for leukemia patients, Bryan has helped hundreds of patients and families as part of a team of dedicated nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and physicians. In that time, he's seen how outrageous healthcare costs are bankrupting families, health insurance denials are delaying urgent chemotherapy, and rural hospitals and nursing homes are closing and leaving communities without quality care. And yet, Ohio's government has been silent on these and other vital issues. A rigged and unresponsive legislature prioritizes politicians over citizens. Bryan is running because caring for his patients and his community cannot end at the hospital door. The people of Ohio deserve better. When Ohio's Secretary of State used misleading ballot language in 2024 to confuse voters and maintain unfair districts, Bryan organized medical professionals across the state to fight back. He took his two young children door to door to talk with neighbors about how gerrymandering leads to an unresponsive and ineffective government. These conversations confirmed that Ohioans all want the same thing: a state government that works for the people. His wife, best friend, and partner, Jana, is a trauma surgeon, and together they have two wonderful children– ages 5 and 7. They are teaching their children the same commitment to democracy and to fighting for what is right that Bryan learned from his parents.Bryan is running for Secretary of State because he has seen how his patients and our communities suffer from a broken and gerrymandered democracy. He is passionate about making our democracy work.
