I spent the past month largely recovering from a (successful) double mastectomy—it was very intense, and I also had amazing care, from my team at UCLA, and from my family and friends. I am healing well and my prognosis couldn't be better—I'm very lucky that intervention was early and I am not fighting for my life. I recorded this episode before my surgery—I did this for a number of reasons: to record the process of navigating options, to highlight where the big fear pockets were for me, and also to work through a second diagnosis, that's scary-sounding but also in hand. If you've faced something like this—or are fearful of facing something like this—I hope my thought process is helpful. In last month's episode (“Taking Your Foot Off the Gas”), I talked a bit about needing a sabbatical—and this is why. I appreciate all of you so much—thank you for continuing to listen to Pulling the Thread while I take some time to take care of myself. I'm very grateful for your support. A lot has happened since the last time I sat down and did an episode like this so its a lil long
After a couple of months away from the podcast, I'm back behind the mic for a listener Q&A. In this episode, I talk about why I took a break, what I've been up to, and what's next for the podcast. I also answer questions on my return to BJJ, how my training has changed, getting great workouts in when you're short on time, and what parents can do to help maximize their kids' athletic potential without becoming overbearing sports parents. Plus, I share my thoughts on the UFC White House card and a few other topics along the way. Questions on the show: Q1: Hey Kyle, I really miss the podcast. Where have you been? I keep checking my feed, hoping for a new episode. Is the podcast done for good, or are you planning to bring it back? Q2: On one of the last podcast episodes, you mentioned getting back into BJJ. How has that changed the way you're training these days? Have you had to adjust your lifting, conditioning, or recovery? Q3: Hey Kyle, my life is busy right now, and most days I only have about 30 minutes to train. If you were in my shoes, how would you structure those workouts to get the best results possible? Q4: I recently reread your article on Long-Term Athletic Development. I don't want to be one of those over-the-top sports parents, but I do have a 10-year-old son, and I want to help him reach his potential. If you could give one or two pieces of advice to parents, what would they be? Q5: Did you watch the UFC card at the White House? If so, what did you think of the fights? In this episode of The Freelancer's Tea Break, I'm reflecting on my son nearing the end of primary school and sharing practical ways I've managed childcare while freelancing, especially over the long summer holidays. I explain how UK tax-free childcare works (pay £8 in, get £2 topped up) and remind you it can help beyond nursery, including some after-school and summer clubs (depending on who accepts it). I also talk about how things get easier as kids get older, and share other support options that have helped me, including help from family (while acknowledging it's a privilege), swapping childcare with friends, using outdoors clubs, and looking into workspaces that offer childcare or gyms with crèches. I also stress the importance of balancing childcare with your partner and invite tips for the secondary school transition, especially for neurodivergent children. This week, I found myself reflecting on the woman I used to be and the woman I'm still becoming. After looking back through photos from the last year and a half, I realized I've slowly let go of some of the habits that help me feel my best. As life gets busier with work, motherhood, friendships, and relationships, I've been asking myself an important question: how do we create space for everything that matters without losing ourselves in the process? In this episode, I share a personal life update and open up about balancing entrepreneurship, parenting, self-care, and the constant challenge of protecting my time and energy. I also reflect on the journey from 18-year-old Heidi, who struggled with self-worth, people-pleasing, and an eating disorder, to the woman I am today. We talk about healing, self-love, creating safe relationships with our children, and one question that completely stopped me in my tracks, what superpower do you have today that was born from trauma? In this episode, we discuss:Reconnecting with yourself during busy seasonsWhy healthy habits matter more than motivationWhat I would tell my 18-year-old selfHealing from shame, self-hatred, and people-pleasingLearning to create safety and trust with your childrenLetting go of control as your kids grow upWhy you either win or you learnFinding the gifts hidden inside difficult experiencesIf you've ever felt overwhelmed, disconnected from yourself, or wondered if healing is really possible, I hope this conversation reminds you that it gets better. There's a lot happening right now… and honestly, some of it is a little unsettling. From a shocking true crime update that keeps getting darker, to the rapid rise of AI scams that are fooling even smart people, this episode dives into what's really going on behind the headlines and why it matters more than you think. The conversation also gets real about how AI is impacting trust, business, and even your personal safety in ways most people are not paying attention to yet. Plus, there are some very real life updates, including a difficult health scare, a behind-the-scenes look at planning an emotional memorial service, and a reminder of what actually matters when everything feels overwhelming. This one is a mix of awareness, perspective, and real life… the kind of episode that makes you stop and think about what you're consuming, who you trust, and how fast things are changing.
