The world lost one of its better inhabitants this week. On May 1, 2025, Jill Sobule was killed in a tragic house fire. Words can't express our loss. Jill was truly a remarkable human being. I'm heartened by the continuing show of love and support I'm seeing all over social media for the last few days from her friends and fans alike...I was lucky enough to be working at a radio station who played Jill's first hit single, "I Kissed a Girl," when it was released on her debut self-titled album in 1995. Over the next few years, she visited radio stations I worked at to perform live and sit for interviews, and she attended a number of industry conferences where we got to hang out and become friends.Jill's many interests included news and politics. After I segued from my career in music radio to progressive talk, Jill remained a fairly frequent guest. She was always informed about what was going on. Jill was an outspoken activist in both her actions and songs. In 2011, she appeared at Netroots Nation in Minneapolis to perform an original song she wrote for the occasion honoring immigrants and groups who help them, "America Back." (You can find the recording of that song from that event here on YouTube.)I was going to put together a show to honor Jill with clips of her various appearances on my show over the years. While searching through my archives, I found this recording from September 1, 2009. At the time, I was hosting a show weeknights on Air America Radio, usually from my home studio in South Florida. That week, I was visiting Los Angeles, broadcasting live from studios there.Jill Sobule had just released her first crowd-funded album on her own new label, Pinko Records. It was produced by Don Was and titled "California Years." Jill and Don joined me in the studio one evening. With the commercials, news and other non-related content edited out it runs just over an hour. Sadly the recording stopped while we were wrapping up, with Jill in mid-sentence singing a "happy song" about a dream in which she was fighting Nazis.I hadn't realized I had that recording until I came across it this weekend. After listening to it I realized that I should just share this entire broadcast. We spent the time talking about so many different things, and she and Don performed a few songs. In that setting, you get to hear Jill just being Jill. Sweet, funny, immensely talented and quite humble.I'll soon put together a post with a bunch of the interviews we'd done together over the years. But for today, we'll hang with Jill Sobule for a while and remember how lucky we were to have her while we did. She did, indeed, live a good life.

Howie Klein has been my regular Thursday guest for over a dozen years now, but our friendship goes back further to the early 90s, when I was doing rock radio in Los Angeles and he was president of Reprise Records. When Howie left Reprise and Warner Brothers as Time Warner and AOL merged, he began devoting all of his time to progressive politics, launching Down with Tyranny and the Blue America PAC.Danny Goldberg also worked in the music industry as a personal manager, record company president, public relations man and journalist since the late 1960s. When Howie and I first met, Danny managed Nirvana, Hole, Sonic Youth, Bonnie Raitt, The Allman Brothers, Rickie Lee Jones and more. From 2005-2006, Danny was CEO of Air America Radio. That was a few years before I joined the network and hosted a nightly show there. All three of us share the common experience of working in the music industry and being very involved in progressive politics. Today, we're all dealing with our current political situation as best we can. Admittedly, I am not handling it well. Two weeks ago on the show, Howie mentioned that he had dinner with his dear old friend Danny Goldberg, and told me that Danny had some very important and insightful thoughts on surviving these dark days and fighting back, and suggested we have Danny join us on the show. So he is doing that today. They'll be here for the second half-hour.Tonight, Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez will be in my neck of the woods. They're heading out west as part of Bernie's Fighting Oligarchy tour. I will be there and will bring you coverage tomorrow and Monday. They're leading the way of the resistance, but it's up to all of us. At the top of the show, I'll share some more constructive ways we can and are fighting back. It's all in our hands right now...

He hosted the radio show "Ring of Fire" on Air America Radio, and has written a bunch of books - both fiction and non-fiction- dealing with the law.His new book, THE MIDDLEMAN, centers on the shady practices of Big Pharma, a subject we should all be concerned about. One of Pap's co-hosts on "Ring of Fire" for many years was Bobby Kennedy Jr. When I invited him on the show to talk about his new book, I also said I'd have to ask about Trump's Secretary of Health and Human Services, a man for who I previously had a lot of respect. He said no subject was off limits.

I've been hosting this show exclusively online since January 21, 2010. Prior to that, we were on Air America Radio weeknights. But on that day, Air America went dark... coincidentally, that was the day that the Supreme Court handed down its democracy-killing decision in Citizens United, basically equating money with speech and upending one of the legs of democracy. Howie Klein has been a regular guest on this show since the Air America days. So, for more than 15 years now, Howie and I have spoken on the show almost weekly about our democracy and how to best keep or move the nation to be a bit more progressive. In addition to his blog at DownWithTyranny.com, Howie also oversees the Blue America PAC (joined by Heather 'Digby' Parton and Crooks & Liars' John Amato0, who actively raise money for the best progressive candidates running. I'm doing this 're-set' as it's been a few weeks since Howie has been here (all on me and my health issues), and because of a bit of a media realignment that I believe is just beginning, we have some newcomers checking out the show. Since we haven't spoken since the election, one of the things we'll discuss today is the disconnect between the narrative pushed by the legacy/corporate media pushing and the truth regarding the election results and, frankly, just about everything else...

How Democrats Lost The 2024 Presidential Election By Alienating Men Driving Them To Trump https://amzn.to/46cj7NT About the Guest(s): Mark W. Sutton is a recognized expert in political analysis and voter behavior with a particular focus on male voters. He has dedicated over 35 years to advocating for male wellbeing and has been a registered Democrat, contributing content to prominent platforms like NPR, Air America Radio, and the Mother Jones Radio Show. Sutton is an advocate for male issues and has hosted the podcast "Liberal Arts with Mark Sutton." He has appeared on major media outlets such as MSNBC and CBS Radio, further cementing his status as a thought leader in gender-focused political strategy. He is the author of "How Democrats Can Win Back Men: Why Understanding Voters and Their Issues is Vital for Democrat Victory." Episode Summary: In this engaging episode of The Chris Voss Show, Chris Voss talks with Mark W. Sutton, the insightful author of "How Democrats Can Win Back Men," as they examine the aftermath of a significant electoral defeat for the Democratic Party. The conversation delves into the critical gender voting gap that has emerged over the decades and focuses on how men have increasingly shifted their political support towards the Republican Party. With provocative insights and a wealth of historical data, Sutton sheds light on the unaddressed needs of male voters and how the Democrats' failure to recognize these issues led to their recent electoral losses. Throughout the episode, Sutton and Voss explore the complex dynamics of voter behavior, examining how messaging and policy approaches have disconnected many men from the Democratic Party. As Sutton presents his compelling analysis, he emphasizes the necessity for the party to understand and address male concerns to regain their support. The conversation also touches upon cultural phenomena such as the masculinity movement and societal narratives that have further polarized gender roles and party allegiance. Sutton leaves the audience with a critical message on the importance of inclusivity and the dangers that lie in ignoring half the electorate. Key Takeaways: The Democratic Party's failure to acknowledge and address male voter issues has led to a significant gender gap in voting patterns. Historical data shows that whenever Democrats fare worse than an 8% deficit among male voters, they lose elections. Sutton criticizes the Democratic Party for its messaging failures and lack of focus on male issues in platforms and policies. The conversation highlights the cultural divide exacerbating political differences between genders, driven by societal shifts and misinformation. Acknowledging and incorporating male-focused policies can be essential for democratic victories in future elections. Notable Quotes: "Every time they have been worse than minus 8% among men, they have lost." – Mark W. Sutton "Men and women's fates are always tied together, biologically and socially." – Mark W. Sutton "The imaging part and the messaging part are where the Democrats fell short this election." – Mark W. Sutton "We're tied together as men and women, and our success depends on unity, not division." – Chris Voss "If men are like, wow, there's not enough jobs for me, they feel like they're being discriminated against." – Mark W. Yesterday, the HEALTH CARE un-covered Newsletter arrived in my inbox, sporting the headline "Fifteen Years Ago Today I Became a Whistleblower". It was from Wendell Potter who remains a hero to all of us in the US, whether you know it or not. I was fortunate to first interview Wendell on Air America Radio in August of 2009, just two months after he testified before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, pulling back the curtain from around the industry for which he carried water and covered up unethical practices. A few months later, he would testify before the House and became the most important voice for the masses, just as then president Obama was helping to push through the first health care industry reforms in decades. Fifteen years ago. And though things are better for us mere mortals who will, at some point, need medical care, we're still fighting nefarious forces in the health insurance and so-called health care industries as well as in government. And Wendell continues to fight for us. Wendell Potter has been a frequent guest on this program since that first appearance 15 years ago and I'm proud to consider him a friend. I invited him back to today to talk about the problems we're still faced with and to thank him, again, for standing up for us. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message

We have a busy show planned for today. One of the greats of Rock & Roll is today's featured guest!Dave Mason has been making music since he was 16. He's now 76, so that's a lot of music. His first big break came as a founding member of Traffic, alongside Steve Winwood. He played on records by greats including Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones and lots of others, and has had a successful solo career, penning song that were hits for others as himself. With a memoir coming out in May, Dave Mason is still touring. His new "Endgangered Species" Tour kicked off last night in Atlanta. He's down in Ft. Lauderdale on Wed! So we'll wrap up the week with Dave Mason today. But first, a look back at this weekend in history. Today is the 2nd anniversary of Joe Biden's inauguration,.Tomorrow marks a sad day for freedom of speech. Ten years ago, on January 21, 2013, SCOTUS changed everything with their awful Citizens United ruling, and Air America Radio ended its run on the airwaves. We'll begin the show with a visit from the man who mostly put Air America together and on the air, Jon Sinton. He's the same guy who runs Progressive Voices today.Sunday, January 22 marks the 50th anniversary of SCOTUS ruling in Roe v Wade that legalized abortion until fetal viability. The new Extreme Court just struck that down... what a way to celebrate 50 years of a woman's right to choose!During the Dave Mason interview, I played the video of the new recording of "Feelin' Alright" by The Quarantines. In the middle, I got a copyright notification on my screen, so I stopped it early. Here's the whole video, because it's too good to cut off in the middle!

After the phony outrage from the American right wing nuts, I got to thinking about other political prisoners. The longest-serving one is Leonard Peltier, a Native American activist who's been held since 1975! He just turned 78, is in failing health, and the government has resisted calls for his release for decades. Today, I'll share the latest on the efforts to free Peltier, including a letter from seven US Senators sent to President Biden just two weeks ago, urging clemency. And we'll go back to my show when it was on Air America Radio... the date was July 31, 2009, when I spoke with Peltier's attorney, singer-songwriter-activist Bruce Cockburn and activist Harvey Wasserman. Find out lots of info about Leonard Peltier and his case at whoisleonardpeltier.info and, of course, by listening to today's show.

Former Senator Al Franken discusses the radicalization of the Republican party and the threats facing American Democracy.  During the interview, Al had this to say about his Republican colleagues: “I stay in touch with some of my former Republican colleagues and I will give them crap. I'll text them and I send them Christmas cards. And I ask them about their families and I know them and we joke and stuff like that. I got along pretty well with my colleagues, I thought. I will just chide them and basically say, 'Why can't you just come out and say that Biden won the election?' And they'll be, blah blah blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. It ultimately comes down to, 'I'd lose my primary.' That's what it comes down to. I finally get them to say that. And these guys, I understand. They want to be senators and they want to stay in power and they want to be senators.” Al Franken got his start as a stand up comedian, and was a writer on Saturday Night Live for 15 seasons in between 1975 and 1995. He won five Emmys during his time on the show, and also won two Grammys for his comedy and spoken word albums. Later in his career, Al noticed that conservative narratives dominated radio airwaves, so he created The Al Franken Show in an attempt to even the playing field. Al said this about creating the show: “I'm doing this because I want to use my energies to get Bush unelected.” The show aired on Air America Radio from 2004-2007. In 2007, Al announced he was running for the senate seat in Minnesota. He won the general election by only 312 votes. He served as senator from 2009 to 2018.  Now, Al hosts the Al Franken Podcast, and is currently on tour.  He is also the author of nine books, four of which were #1 New York Times Best Sellers. Meet Janeane Garafolo, standup star for three decades, accomplished film and tv actor, and one of the pioneers of Air America Radio. An early win as "Funniest Person in Rhode Island" (hey, it's a start) led to gaining fame as a fearless and funny commentator on sexism in society. That led to a run of classic indie films ("Reality Bites", "The Truth About Cats and Dogs") and eventually a role on The Larry Sanders Show. In 2004, she became one of the first voices on Air America Radio, a liberal talk radio network, and today she continues with film and tv roles as well as standup tours. I lifted the title of the film we'll be discussing on today's show and used it as the title for this episode because it's a custom fit. The film "Not Going Quiety" tells Ady Barkan's story. If you were at all involved in the fight over the last 10+ years for Medicare For All, you likely know about Ady Barkan. Always a progressive activist and organizer, Ady was diagnosed with ALS. He continued his activism and organizing work, pushing for M4A. Director Nicholas Bruckman and Producer Amanda Roddy join me for the second half of today's show. The film premieres Monday 1/24 on PBS' "POV." You can also find other ways to listen at notgoingquietlyfilm.com. But we'll begin today's show with a trip in the Wayback Machine... back 12 years to the day. January 21, 2010, the Supreme Court ruled on Citizens United v. FEC, a case concerning the relationship between campaign finance and free speech. As you should know, it was a democracy-killing opinion that threw open the doors of dark money in campaigns. Then, later that afternoon came the news that Air America Radio had ceased operations. I'll play for you the beginning of the show I did that night... my first post-Air America show, and the beginning of the program I'm still hosting today!

With her work with AAF, Winstead has taken her satirical brilliance one step further, combining it with her passion for reproductive rights to expose anti choice hypocrisy and inspiring a whole new model of activism.  In an interview with NPR, Winstead talked about growing up without seeing enough women comedians on television. “I didn't see any women on television doing stand up unless they were older women like Totie Fields or Joan Rivers, and so I didn't see anyone like me. It was either men in suits talking about what men in suits talk about, or women, if they were older, talking about how much their husbands disappointed them and sort of the level that their boobs had sunk to on their body. That was a very popular thing to talk about for a lot of comedians back in the day. And so it wasn't until I was watching George Carlin one night with a girlfriend of mine and she said why don't you try that? And I said I don't know. Do you think I could? And she said why not?” Winstead grew up in Minneapolis in a conservative Catholic family, the youngest of five children. She currently lives in Brooklyn NY, and continues to tour the country doing stand up in support of abortion rights. Andrew Spar is president of the Florida Education Association, the state’s largest association of professional employees. Spar was born and raised in the suburbs of New York City, attending public schools. A violinist since age 6, he earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from Ohio State University, graduating in 1994. That same year, he went to Daytona Beach to teach at Turie T. Small Elementary School, where more than 90 percent of the students lived in poverty. The music teacher soon found his voice as an advocate and has worked ever since on behalf of public school students, schools, teachers and education staff professionals. “I could not read when I was in first grade,” Spar recalls. “I struggled in school. But the educators in my life were empowered to make my success a priority, and that’s just what they did. I want the same world for my family and for all of Florida’s children.” At Turie T. Small, Spar served as school-improvement chair for two years and as a union steward for seven years. He would go on to become president of his local union in May 2003 and led Volusia United Educators until he was elected FEA vice president in 2018. In September 2020, he was named FEA president after the previous president, Fedrick C. Ingram, was elected secretary-treasurer of the American Federation of Teachers. During his 15 years leading the Volusia union, Spar negotiated 14 contracts, handled numerous grievances and arbitrations, and spent many long hours advocating for members and working families. In 2017, he led the merger of the Volusia Teachers Organization and the Volusia Educational Support Association to create Volusia United Educators(link is external). The new union has nearly 3,800 members and represents more than 6,000 teachers, paraprofessionals and office specialists in Volusia County Schools. He also has served on the executive board of the Florida AFL-CIO(link is external) and was secretary-treasurer of the organization from January 2016 until September 2020. The senate is in the midst of another vote-a-rama today ahead of a vote, sometime this weekend, on the $1.9 trillion covid relief bill. Today on my show, we'll look ahead to Monday, when the murder trial begins for Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis police officer who knelt on the neck of George Floyd for almost 10 minutes, ultimately killing him. Jack Rice is an old friend and colleague from Air America Radio who is also an attorney. He's been a prosecutor and is currently working as a criminal defense lawyer. Today, he joins me for a preview of the trial that begins on Monday. Jack Rice is always fascinating. Today, he brings the perspective of one who lives just blocks away from where George Floyd was killed. Is Justice possible? We'll discuss... And today's show runs a bit long, as I had to say a few things about the filibuster and the 7 Democrats (plus Angus King) who voted against the $15 minimum wage. Ugh.

My guest is Julie Mashack. Julie is the Director of Global Programs and Networks at 92nd Street Y - (as in the 24th letter of the alphabet) - it’s a 145 year old cultural and community center located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. The Y is short for Young Men's and Young Women's Hebrew Association.“I admire [when you have] a confidence in your own opinion that you can listen to someone else and maybe your opinion won’t change but you’re confident enough to say, “Okay, I’m open” and that I don’t automatically feel so threatened by another opinion that I don’t need to shoot it down, that I can listen to it. I admire when I see that happen — I think it’s incredible.”Julie started out as a radio producer on NPR and Air America Radio and had a good stint in television news production before she joined 92nd Street Y over six years ago.She oversees the major outreach and civic engagement initiatives for 92Y Belfer Center for Innovation and Social Impact. I met her at an online event hosted by the Royal Society of Arts here in the UK when I heard her talk about a fascinating initiative that she launched and has grown to a network of 300+ civil conversation clubs in 33 states, probably more by the time you’re listening to this because, when I met her, she was looking for leaders in countries around the world to set-up international clubs — you can appreciate how this might have drawn me in - and you for that matter. The initiative is called The Ben Franklin Circles — a quick background… so Ben Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America. As well as being an influential politician of his time, he was many other things including a scientist and an inventor. He was deputy postmaster-general for the British colonies in 1753 and he did own and deal in slaves but by the late 1750s, he began arguing against slavery and became an abolitionist.Ben was all for self-betterment and ran conversation clubs to discuss his own defined list of 13 virtues… temperance, silence, order, resolution, frugality, industry, sincerity, justice, moderation, cleanliness, tranquility, chastity, and humility — all with the purpose of asking two questions: How can we improve ourselves? How can we improve our world?Taking that concept, Julie led an initiative to bring those conversation clubs back into practice and I wanted to learn more about them as well as her own conversation journey.Click here for full show notes and more episodes of Better Conversations with Sehaam Cyrene

Join us for a discussion with journalist Laura Flanders about the state of our country, politics, progressive talk radio, women in radio, and her brand new show on PBS. Laura Flanders is an Izzy-Award winning independent journalist, a New York Times bestselling author and the recipient of the Pat Mitchell Lifetime Achievement Award from the Women's Media Center. By 1990 she was co-hosting "CounterSpin," the weekly radio report from the media watch group FAIR and reporting from Central America, the Middle East and Europe for media outlets like In These Times, New Directions For Women, Ms., Outweek, The Nation, and Pacifica Radio. The mega-mergers of the 1990s left the media landscape packed with ads and partisan punditry, but devoid of news from most of the country or the world. Invited to host a daily call-in, Laura launched “Your Call” on San Francisco's public radio station KALW in 2001 and then "The Laura Flanders Show" on Air America Radio to engage listeners in a deep-dive into the issues of the day. Supported by FreeSpeechTV, Laura moved to television in 2008, starting "GRITtv," a daily national news show that covered the financial crisis from the grassroots up. Laura emerged determined to introduce audiences to a wealth of people, places—and policy options—that other media ignored. Her latest endeavor is "The Laura Flanders Show," which launched on public television stations in September 2020. The same year, Flanders received a Cultural Freedom Fellowship from the Lannan Foundation “for her tireless work as an independent journalist, interviewing activists who are creating solutions to economic injustice and catastrophic environmental destruction. Her body of work helps the American public begin to imagine alternatives.” Don't miss this conversation with a pioneering journalist about the issues the media doesn't discuss enough, what it discusses too much, and why it matters. David was awarded the Studs and Ida Terkel Prize, awarded annually to a first-time author who demonstrates a "commitment to exploring aspects of America that are underrepresented by mainstream media". We discuss the broad, national foreclosure crisis, which was (and is) really is criminal mortgage fraud. The centuries old basic tenant of American land ownership is being undermined. At times, who owns a home can't be proven. Millions of Americans have experienced foreclosure, some are still in their homes, banks have paused proceedings in places where home prices have not yet rebounded. While the "crisis" may seem to be our rearview mirror, its effects are long lasting and will take decades to be resolved. While centered in the "sand states" of Florida, Arizona, Nevada, and California, where the majority of new home construction occurred in the past decade, cash out, interest-only, and adjustable rate mortgages were (and are) common in Missouri. In St. Louis, mortgage products often focused on the African-American homeowner, who may have had equity in their homes. David Dayen is a journalist who writes about economics and finance. He is a contributing writer to Salon.com and The Intercept, and a weekly columnist for The Fiscal Times and The New Republic. He also writes for The American Prospect, Vice, The Huffington Post, and more. He has been a guest on MSNBC, CNN, Bloomberg, Al Jazeera, Russia Today, NPR, Pacifica Radio and Air America Radio. Aired 12/24/08 TERRY McNALLY on AIR AMERICA RADIO sitting in for RACHEL MADDOW and interviews BILL DRAYTON. BILL DRAYTON has pioneered the field of social entrepreneurship. He is the CEO and founder of ASHOKA, a global organization which selects individuals tackling society's most pressing problems with innovative, entrepreneurial solutions. Since 1981, ASHOKA has elected over 2,000 leading social entrepreneurs as Ashoka Fellows, providing them with living stipends, professional support, and access to a global network of peers in more than 60 countries. Through ASHOKA, DRAYTON has introduced the world to a fundamentally new model of how ideas can change social systems across the globe, improving the lives of millions. As a management consultant with McKinsey & Co, he gained wide experience serving both public and private clients, and built his understanding of how organizations work. He also served briefly in the White House, and taught both law and management at Stanford Law School and Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. He is a graduate of Harvard, Oxford, and Yale Universities. Social entrepreneurs often seem to be possessed by their ideas, committing their lives to changing the direction of their field. They are both visionaries and ultimate realists, concerned with the practical implementation of their vision above all else. Each social entrepreneur presents ideas that are user-friendly, understandable, ethical, and engage widespread support in order to maximize the number of local people that will stand up, seize their idea, and implement with it. In other words, every leading social entrepreneur is a mass recruiter of local changemakers-a role model proving that citizens who channel their passion into action can do almost anything. Over the past two decades, the citizen sector http://www.ashoka.org/citizensector has discovered what the business sector learned long ago: There is nothing as powerful as a new idea in the hands of a first-class entrepreneur. Just as entrepreneurs change the face of business, social entrepreneurs act as the change agents for society, seizing opportunities others miss and improving systems, inventing new approaches, and creating solutions to change society for the better. While a business entrepreneur might create entirely new industries, a social entrepreneur comes up with new solutions to social problems and then implements them on a large scale. He is the author of The Origins of Order, At Home in the Universe: The Search for the Laws of Self-Organization, Investigations and his newest, Reinventing the Sacred: A New View of Science, Reason, and Religion. With economic and communications globalization, some form of a global civilization is beginning to emerge. Just as we confront the challenges of global warming and peak oil, and the likelihood of growing hunger and resource wars, our diverse cultures are being crushed together. One response is a retreat into fundamentalisms, often religious, often hostile. Clearly there is an urgent need for new thinking. STUART KAUFFMAN says that's why he wrote Reinventing the Sacred. Rooted in hard science, the book - and it's passionate author -- aims for nothing less than a revolution in how we see the world, reality, God, and our role in it all.
