Pets that like going to the veterinarian are generally healthier. Now, the Fear Free movement is coming to your home with ideas for enriching your pet's life everyday. Dr. Marty Becker is back to explain how your pets can live an improved lifestyle. Listen Now Can Kissing Your Pet Make You Fat? Researchers are looking into the connection between having a pet and obesity. They are interested in gut health and trying to find out if certain microbial swaps (such as a kiss or a lick with your pet) might help or hurt when it comes to weight problems in both pets and people. Current evidence actually suggests heavier people have heavier pets, which some scientists believe could be due to microbial swaps from a human to a dog. Listen Now How Hot is Too Hot? Your dog doesn't need to be in a hot car to suffer from heat exhaustion. Temperatures above 82 degrees are enough to cause a fatal reaction. Steve Burdo from Contra Costa Animal Services sat inside his Acura as temperatures soared about 115 degrees. He did this to bring attention to the new California law that allows people to break into cars to rescue hot animals. Listen Now Scammer Targets Lost Pets The number of pet related fraud cases are on the rise. The latest is Texas where a woman's cat mysteriously disappeared from the front porch where he would take his afternoon nap every day. The day after he vanished, she put up fliers all over her neighborhood. Less than a week later, she received a call from a man who asked if there was a reward for the cats return. He then said she could get Romeo back for $300 and offered to finance the payments for 8 months! Listen Now Read more about this week's show.

This week, Mara Velez of Shelter Playgroup Alliance joins Tabitha to discuss enrichment for shelter dogs. Enrichment is a need for all shelter animals. Animals have natural behaviors and needs, and they must have opportunities to express those behaviors. Enrichment provides needed mental and physical stimulation, improves quality of life, decreases stress, decreases unwanted behaviors, and length of stay. It helps to increase adoptions, provide choices, can manage, and prevent behavior problems, and keeps animals in their new homes. Mara and I discuss the importance of enrichment, the struggles we have seen due to animals having inappropriate or no enrichment, what appropriate enrichment is, and more! About our guest:Mara Velez, MA, CPDT-KA, is the Executive Director of two non-profits: the Shelter Playgroup Alliance and Humane Dog Training Advocates.  She is also a Certified Professional Dog Trainer.  Mara has been working in the shelter setting for almost 15 years.  Mara was a behavior and training consultant at Contra Costa Animal Services where she collaboratively designed, developed, and implemented behavior program structures, including a robust volunteer training program, revised behavior evaluation, canine enrichment and playgroup guidelines.  It was these guidelines that served as the basis for the Shelter Playgroup Alliance guidelines. Mara holds both a bachelors and master's degree in psychology and completed all of the course work for a doctorate in education.   In addition to completing several animal behavior and training-related programs, Mara continually develops her skills and knowledge of canines by attending seminars and reading science-based canine literature. To date, she has completed over 3,000 hours of continuing education. Mara also enjoys training other species because it expands her training and observation skills. She has worked with: cats, bunnies, wolves, foxes, guinea pigs, coyotes, buffalo, donkeys, goats, alpacas, chickens, birds, and fish.Related Show Links:Shelter Playgroup AllianceSPA Shelter Behavior and Enrichment Conference Humane Dog Training AdvocatesSupport the show via social media:Twitter: https://twitter.com/TailsFromRVTFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TailsFromAVetTechPodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/tailsfromavettech/Have a question you'd like answered on the show? Nancy and Harold discuss three animal rescue events that made last weekend great. And exhausting. But mostly great! On Friday, Nancy helped with a Wings of Rescue flight, the third one of 2017 Nancy worked on. She worked hard to coordinate the flight of sixteen dogs from Northern California to a variety of no-kill shelters in Spokane, Washington. Nancy shares some of her thoughts from that day. On Saturday, Nancy and Harold attended the Business of Saving Lives conference which brings together many animal rescue people from the San Francisco Bay Area. It was the thirteenth annual event at Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation. Some great speakers, including Dr. Regan McGowan; Erin Kerley and Audra Farrell; Renee Harris; and especially, Dr. Kate Hurley. On Sunday, it was St. Pitty’s Day at Contra Costa Animal Services, an event that attracts potential adopters to meet a wide variety of dogs from Contra Costa Animal Services and other rescue organizations. Nancy and Harold discuss the adoption of Sedona, a beautiful pitbull mix.
