Recent 4-star RB commit Dante Dowdell could be compared to several past Oregon running backs, but Royce Freeman may very well be his best comparison. He also might remind some Duck fans of Jeremiah Johnson, a big and physical back who does a lot of damage between the tackles. His addition is another win for new RB coach Carlos Locklyn, who is clearly intent on bringing a physical presence to Oregon's backfield for Dan Lanning. On this episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by Max Torres--host of the 'Ducks Dish' podcast covering Oregon for Sports Illustrated. Max weighs in on Dowdell's commitment to the Ducks and how Oregon was able to get him to come to Eugene all the way from Mississippi. Plus, insight into the ongoing recruitment of 2023 5-star QB Jayden Rashada, who could provide this staff with the opportunity to do what the previous administration could not: develop and MAXIMIZE a young QB. Finally, they conclude talking about 4-star WR Kyler Kasper, a recent Oregon commit on the perimeter on offense. He is the sort of big-bodied receiver that the Ducks haven't often had in recent years. Alongside sophomores Dont'e Thornton and Troy Franklin, Kasper could work his way into the fold at times this year as someone who represents a 1v1 threat on the outside in Kenny Dillingham's offense. Coming off of its first ever Pac-12 conference title, Utah Football is currently considered the third-most likely team to win the conference in 2022 according to the betting markets. With HC Kyle Whittingham in his 18th season returning First-Team All-Pac 12 performers from last year's squad in QB Cameron Rising and RB Tavion Thomas, that may come as a surprise to some. For Utah fans, being underrated has been par for the course even during their most recent rise to national relevance in College Football. On this episode of Locked On Pac-12, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by Carter Bahns of BeaverBlitz.com to talk about the current football betting favorites for the Pac-12 in 2022. Is USC really going to have the sort of turnaround that should make them a 2/1 favorite to win the conference in Lincoln Riley's first season as the Trojans' head coach? It seems unlikely, especially with Kyle Whittingham back for season 18 with the Utes, poised once again for another strong season in the Pac-12 conference. Off of a 7-win season, Oregon State has, for the first time in several years, expectations of contending in the Pac-12 North this year. With Oregon as the team to beat, which of OSU, Washington State, or maybe even Stanford could knock off the Ducks and get to the Pac-12 title game? With Washington and Stanford coming off of down years, the opportunity is available for the Beavs or the Cougars to capitalize. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Now with 4 commitments in the Class of 2023, Oregon Football is beginning to set the tone for next year's recruiting class--and the early returns are positive. Still, some Oregon fans are waiting to see if or when a big-name quarterback will commit to Dan Lanning's first full recruiting class. The Ducks have been pursuing two 5-star QBs in Jayden Rashada (from CA) and Dante Moore (from MI). On this episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by John Garcia Jr., the director of recruiting for Sports Illustrated. After not visiting Eugene during the Spring Game as was previously expected, Jayden Rashada has planned his next visit to Oregon. John provides an update on where the Ducks stand with both 2023 5-star QBs, and the outlook is positive in many respects for both. Oregon fans rightly have high expectations for Dan Lanning's defensive prowess after it was the hallmark for Georgia's national championship run. To build a defense of that caliber starts on the recruiting trail and bringing in the "Jimmies and the Joes" on that side of the ball. Spencer and John conclude talking about the latest in the recruitments of 5-star 2023 DL/EDGE players Jayden Wayne (WA) and David Hicks (TX). Oregon is squarely in the mix for 2 guys who could be high-impact players from the moment they take the field in their college careers. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! A sub-gauge revolution is sweeping across the country as more waterfowl hunters are reinventing their game, swinging 20- and 28-gauge shotguns instead of their trusty ol' 12. George Thompson, Director of Product Management for Benelli, tells Ramsey about adding 28-gauge to the successful Super Black Eagle platform, covering a range of other Benelli-related innovations. Where'd the philosophy "carry a 20-gauge but shoulder a 12-gauge" originate? Why'd they choose 28-gauge and what were some of the challenges--and will there be a .410? What are some of the subtle differences between SBE and Ethos shotguns, and how has the 28-gauge been received by customers?  Will the proprietary Benelli Surface Treatment be available in other colors? What makes the 828 U Over-under shotgun unique? How have "performance shop" Benelli shotguns been modified, and why? Recent odds have Oregon Football as the 2nd-most likely team to win the Pac-12 in 2022, ahead of Utah and behind USC. While they're certainly the favorites in the Pac-12 North, are they really the 2nd-most likely team that could win the conference this Fall? Them being favored ahead of Utah after last season's 2 blowout losses is a touch surprising, but it helps greatly that they play in the weaker Pac-12 North. On this episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin examines where Oregon Football currently stands going into next season compared to the other potential contenders in the Pac-12. In 2022, it's likely Oregon is contending for the Pac-12 North once again with Washington State and Oregon State--could Washington or Stanford play into the equation? Today's show concludes with a mailbag question about Dan Lanning and how he might assemble the Ducks' roster in the coming years. Is it best to fit your scheme to the roster or fit the roster to the scheme? Both will take place, and we are likely to see Lanning bring in the sorts of players on defense who best fit his 4-2-5 defensive scheme. Oregon has had success with that defensive alignment before (2019-20 w/Andy Avalos) and could once again have the right personnel for that philosophy. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Dan Lanning and Oregon Football have gotten their fourth verbal commitment for the Class of 2023. He chose the Ducks over Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Tennessee after rushing for over 2,500 yards this past season. On this episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin looks at the lates commitment for Dan Lanning and co. in the Class of 2023. Directly competing with and winning recruiting battles against SEC schools for a player down in the heart of the nation's top conference is another sign this staff can recruit at a high level. His profile as a ball-carrier will remind Duck fans of several past Oregon RBs including Royce Freeman. Dowdell could be the last running back commit Oregon has for a while with a position group that suddenly has a lot of youth. Oregon Basketball is looking to reload--literally and metaphorically--after missing the NCAA Tournament this year, just the 4th time in 12 seasons Dana Altman's team has failed to reach the Big Dance. Even with Will Richardson's future still unknown, roster changes this offseason have been plentiful for the Ducks. The roster/potential lineup for next year continues to fill out and show some real promise for Oregon. On this episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by Rian Winter (@SportsChat503) to discuss where Oregon Basketball is at going into next season. Two backcourt transfers make it seem unlikely that Richardson will return, but how will Keeshawn Barthelemy and Jermaine Couisnard (KOOS-nard) fit in together next year? The hype train on 5-star C Kel'el Ware continues to roll along--and there's a good reason that's the case. Last year Oregon had high hopes before the season after bringing in some high-profile transfers (De'Vion Harmon, Jacob Young, Quincy Guerrier) but the team never fully meshed. With more transfers coming in, it's worth thinking about how this year's newcomers will play together--factoring in the talented group of incoming freshman featuring Kel'el Ware and PG Dior Johnson. Waterfowl Habitat Management: Planting Agricultural Hot Crops

There's a time and place everything. Kevin Nelms and Ramsey discuss planting agricultural hot crops such as corn, rice, and various millets to provide high-energy food sources for wintering waterfowl, complimenting natural moist-soil habitat to form a waterfowl complex.  What are the pros and cons? How do site limitations affect crop selection, what excellent online resources are available to landowners for determining your property's soil type limitations? What is chiwapa millet and where's it available? What about "grassy corn"?  But wait-there's more! Much more! As USDA NRCS Wildlife Biologist in the Mississippi Delta, Nelms has spent decades designing and developing numerous private-lands waterfowl impoundments. He's worked extensively with private landowners throughout the region, improving desirable waterfowl habitat conditions, enhancing duck utilization, even putting together a handbook that Ramsey considers must-have essential for managing waterfowl habitat (refer to related links in the episode description for your own PDF copy). This is the third episode of a 4-part series that duck habitat nerds both new and old will appreciate.     Related Links: Wetlands Management for Waterfowl Handbook (PDF) Managing Moist-Soil Impoundments (YouTube)     Podcast Sponsors: BOSS Shotshells Benelli Shotguns Tetra Hearing Kanati Waterfowl Taxidermy Mojo Outdoors Tom Beckbe Flash Back Decoys Voormi GetDucks USHuntList   It really is duck season somewhere for 365 days per year. As Oregon Football's recruiting pursuits continue, Dan Lanning and co. have plenty of time to fill out their first full cycle for the Class of 2023--and plenty of players are already in their sights. One name popping up as of late has been 2023 3-star RB Roderick Robinson II, a former teammate of Oregon DBs Jahlil Florence and Jalil Tucker. Florence has already chipped in on Robinson's recruitment, lobbying hard for his former teammate from Lincoln HS in San Diego, CA to come and join him in Eugene. On this episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by the Director of Recruiting for Sports Illustrated, John Garcia Jr., to talk about where Oregon stands with several recruits they've made the "final cut" for. Malik Benson, a JUCO wide receiver, has a number of top schools after him including Alabama, Georgia and LSU--with Oregon squarely in the mix as well. Plus, an update on 2023 5-star EDGE Matayo Uiagalalei who continues to keep the Ducks on his shortlist of teams he is considering. Spencer and John finish today's episode talking about how Oregon Football has been approaching the transfer portal so far under Dan Lanning and the new staff. With the coaching change in mind, it's possible this year will be busier than most in terms of how active Oregon is in the transfer portal--both for players leaving and joining the program (or progrum, if you prefer). Still, Oregon has the potential to bring in high-caliber players to help build out their team each year, and should continue to be willing to accept transfers. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! This week we have outfitter and waterfowl enthusiast Ramsey Russell from GetDucks.com. Ramsey is arguably the worlds most traveled and accomplished waterfowler, so we sat him down in the studio to hear some very interesting stories from his travels, but also hit on a few theories about the seemingly recent changes in the North American duck migration patterns. It quickly becomes obvious he's in this game much more for the journey than the hunt. We also deviate from the ducks for a moment to hear his story about pursuing the western capercaille in Russia – a huge species of grouse that hunts very much like a turkey. The times they are a-changin'. Hook-and-bullet waterfowl managers are becoming replaced by a new generation inspired into wildlife management more by watching nature channels than by formative hunting experiences. But isn't it kind of important that they recognize hunting's importance--the real dollars-and-cents support that we duck hunters bring to agency budgets? Joel Brice and Cyrus Baird explain why Delta Waterfowl thought it was very important and what they did about it. Describing why hand-me-down hunting traditions are declining, they tell Ramsey about getting Delta's University Hunting Program into many universities, recruiting students to participate, immersing them into the entire field-to-table experience.  Coming from a place very few listeners can understand, some student feedback underscores this program's vital importance.   Related Links: Delta Waterfowl University Hunt Program Delta Waterfowl Duck Hunters Expo July 29-31, 2023   Podcast Sponsors: BOSS Shotshells Benelli Shotguns Tetra Hearing Kanati Waterfowl Taxidermy Mojo Outdoors Tom Beckbe Flash Back Decoys Voormi GetDucks USHuntList   It's really duck season somewhere for 365 days per year.
