Adopting a rescue animal is a noble pursuit, but dogs who live in a stressful, chaotic shelter may not put their best paw forward when potential owners come to visit. That's where fostering comes in. It's the often-overlooked step between rescue and adoption, and it can be transformative for many dogs. Even while young and broke in New York City, Isabel Klee took up this calling, and it changed her life forever. Today, she educates her enormous online audience about the foster process through heartwarming videos of the pups that come in and out of her life. And while it's not always glamorous, Isabel dispels the myth that aggressive or traumatized dogs can't be rehabilitated. Often, it just takes a few calm days, lots of love, and a little ham(!) to get a sad or injured dog frolicking again. Her big “foster fail” of course, is that she loved one of her guests so much, she had to keep him. Simon (now of @SimonSits fame) was the key that unlocked Isabel's solo social media career. Isabel joins Matt to discuss her work as an animal welfare advocate, why her videos are unique in a sea of cute Internet doggos, the surprising lessons she's learned from fostering dogs in NYC, the messages she gets from families who are inspired to foster, and the complicated emotional baggage around the shelter system. This week we are taking a post directly off social media and discussing it in detail. This post stated that "shelter dogs are not normal" and that they "may never be normal." We both feel that this statement is incredibly damaging to shelter dogs everywhere as well as rescue dogs. We work our way though some subtext that implies shelter dogs are not safe which we also disagree with as a generalization. Many of the comments on the post were blaming adopters and/or the public in general, which can be equally damaging to the adoption of shelter dogs. Coming from a background that celebrates and respects adopters we found this trend to be concerning and wanted to discuss the long term damage some of these flippant remarks can have. We believe there are lots of "normal" and safe dogs available for adoption, and we believe there are lots of amazing adopters. We hope that this episode makes you stop and think about how you talk about rescue dogs as well as adopters on social media so we can continue spreading the word about how great rescue dogs can truly be. It is no secret that shelters can prove to be extremely stressful environments for dogs - even the friendlist, most easy-going dog can experience severe stress or fear in a shelter environment. In this incredible conversation, Emily, Libby and Tom Candy discuss how we can best support shelter dogs in and out of the shelter environment to build confidence, trust, and a sense of play. In this episode, they cover: How to work with dogs who display fearful behaviors in the shelter and kennel environments How to distinguish a dog's shelter-based fear from their general fear The positive benefits of play for shelter dogs The constant game/challenge of cost-benefit analysis for shelter dogs COVID-related undersocialized dogs The genetic vs. evolutionary origins of shelter dogs' fear How to prepare anxious or fearful dogs for adoption - and, how to prepare their families This is an excellent conversation for anyone who interacts with shelter dogs in any way; employees, fosters, potential adopters, and more. — For transcripts, visit www.podtotherescue.com Follow us on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/podtotherescue/ and Facebook https://www.facebook.com/PodToTheRescue! This might be the most important conversation I've ever had on the Believe in Dog Podcast. Have you ever wondered why there's a seemingly endless stream of homeless pets in need at shelters and rescues across the USA? As a writer, Cara Sue Achterberg began documenting her family's experiences fostering dogs for a local rescue and wrote the book Another Good Dog - One Family and 50 Foster Dogs. Cara shares with us her dog fostering wisdom learned from now more than 150+ dogs who have spent time in her home. You may also be surprised to learn that fostering dogs brought Cara's children and family closer than ever – even through their teen years! But Cara did wonder – where were all these dogs coming from? The answer was mostly the Southeastern USA. So when she embarked on a book tour she decided to also make it a shelter tour so she could see firsthand where the dogs were coming from. And this decision changed her life. Cara will share with us what she's learned from visiting 120+ animal shelters in 12 states over the past several years. We'll hear the 3 factors that lead to animal shelters successfully saving lives. And about the unsung heroes who persevere through unimaginable obstacles to give dogs a chance. Cara created the organization Who Will Let The Dogs Out to support the shelters and rescues lacking budgets, resources and often a staff. Who Will Let The Dogs Out is bringing awareness and resources to homeless dogs and the heroes who fight for them. Trigger Warning: The topic of animal euthanization is a theme of this episode. Fostering adolescent and adult dogs can be challenging. In this episode, I break down the goals and introduce the 7 step fostering program I have applied with hundreds of dogs and taught to dozens of fosters. Programs for pet parents are different than those of fostering - Why? Because the goal is different! Fostering is not about BEING the best home or addressing behavioral issues that are specific to the foster home, but rather, taking the steps to ensure a successful adoption into the best home for the dog. I use the example of a recent foster couple I helped with their challenging dog. Their goal to address behavioral issues specific to their home life complicated the process of providing the dog with the necessary skills to be happily homed. The UPWARD Dogology 7 step program keeps the goals in the forefront and the success rate high. In this episode, I review these steps, discussing why they are important, and how they eliminate the need for lengthy fostering periods and allow for an easy integration into their new home. In this episode I chat with Aleksandra Schiffer, president and founder of the Los Angeles non-profit I Stand with My Pack (https://istandwithmypack.org/). We chat about the animal shelter crisis that is happening in Los Angeles right now. With a record number of dogs — upwards of three times the normal rate — being relinquished, abandoned, and dumped, shelters are at capacity. Some shelters are housing as many as five dogs in kennels made for one, and the euthanasia rate is quickly rising simply because they do not have the space or resources to care for these dogs. We chat about some of the reasons behind this crisis and what really needs to change to help these animals.Resources:https://istandwithmypack.org/https://www.laanimalservices.com/Support the show If you are enjoying The Baroo Podcast you can now support the show by buying me a coffee. Lisa, PhD, CBCC-KA, is an Associate Professor at Coastal Carolina University in the Psycholgy Department and directors the laboratory for animal behaviour and welfare. Before beginning her graduate studies, she worked for nearly a decade with pets in animal shelters and with dogs and their owners. Lisa's research aims to better the lives of companion animals and their owners. Under the mentorship of Clive Wynne, Lisa earned her Masters in 2015 and her PhD in 2018 as a graduate student in the behavioural neuroscience and comparative psychology program at Arizona State University. Prior to her graduate school, she worked as a behaviour consultant and trainer in San Francisco, where she taught group classes and consulted with owners experiencing issues of fear, anxiety, and aggression with their dogs. Her interest in canine behaviour began in 2002 as an animal shelter volunteer, training dogs in basic skills and assisting in shelter dog playgroups. That interest grew into a career where she managed the behaviour programs of several shelters throughout the West. These experiences led Lisa to co-found Wagfield Academy, an online dog training and behaviour resource for owners (which was acquired by the Humane Society of the United States Pets for Life program), and the Institute for Shelter Dogs with past ATA podcast guest Dr Erica Feuerbacher, where they combine the latest in shelter research with the current best practices in workshops for staff and volunteers.Six years ago, she founded and annually organised the Canine Science Symposium, which regularly disseminated the latest applied canine science to practitioners from across the country and excitingly might be returning in 2023 For links CLICK HERE >>> https://atamember.com/2022/09/26/lisa-gunter-2/
