“Several years ago, the musician Mike Mattison fixated on the story of how Charlie Idaho killed the Mercy Man,” Eric McHenry writes in our Summer issue. Mattison had found the tale in the writings of folklorist Alan Lomax, whose source identified a powerful Mississippi levee boss as the murderer of an SPCA officer. Not finding any existing ballads about the crime, Mattison wrote the eerily beautiful track “Charlie Idaho,” which caught the attention of McHenry, who specializes in poring over old newspapers for musical breadcrumbs about the blues. He quickly discovered that Mattison wasn't the first person to put the story to song—and “Charlie Idaho” masked the name of the Mercy Man's true killer.Go beyond the episode:Read Eric McHenry's investigation, “Who Killed the Mercy Man?”Listen to Mike Mattison's ballad “Charlie Idaho” Sampled in the episode:Sampson Pittman's “I've Been Down in the Circle Before”Ed Lewis's “Levee Camp Holler” and his commentary, recorded by Alan Lomax in 1959Alger “Texas” Alexander's “Levee Camp Moan Blues”Tune in every (other) week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. The SPCA is riding the tail of a global cat film sensation. CatVideoFest is a 75-minute compilation of small felines doing silly things. It's reached our cinemas and a portion of money from screenings goes to the SPCA. It was founded in the US and has benefited charities in North America and Europe - before making its way to Australia and New Zealand. Director Will Braden says there's something special about the product. "The charitable component just comes around because everyone want to see cat videos. We would be crazy if we didn't use it to raise some money for cats in need." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What if everything you thought you knew about kindness in Judaism was only scratching the surface? In this deeply moving exploration of "chesed," we uncover how this three-letter Hebrew word forms the very foundation of Jewish life—appearing 248 times throughout Tanakh and comprising the beginning and end of Torah itself. The power of this concept comes alive through a heart-wrenching story from the 1929 Hebron Massacre, where a dying yeshiva student, his body torn and bleeding, used his final moments to smear his own blood on a friend lying nearby—making him appear dead to save him from attackers. This extraordinary act of selflessness forces us to confront what it truly means to live a life centered on giving rather than taking. We explore three transformative principles of chesed that challenge conventional thinking. First, we learn from the biblical giant Og that even kindness done with ulterior motives retains spiritual merit. Next, we discover through ancient wisdom that true hospitality isn't about impressing guests but making them feel like family. Finally, we confront the often-overlooked truth that chesed operates in concentric circles—beginning with those closest to us before extending outward. This perspective-shifting discussion reveals why many marriages struggle despite partners' reputations for charitable work, and how prioritizing the inner circles of chesed can transform our most important relationships. By reclaiming this fundamental concept from the realm of cliché, we uncover its revolutionary power to reshape our understanding of what Judaism demands of us at its core.Take this journey from eye-rolling dismissal to profound appreciation for how chesed—true selflessness—forms the beating heart of authentic Jewish life. Your understanding of kindness will never be the same.Support the showJoin The Motivation Congregation WhatsApp community for daily motivational Torah content!------------------Check out our other Torah Podcasts and content! Gina Latucca from the SPCA announces that 7-month-old Beaker is looking for a home.
As the summer months heat up, so does the intake of stray and displaced animals at the York County SPCA, putting serious pressure on space, staff, and resources. Steven Martinez, Executive Director of the York County SPCA, joined The Spark to shed light on how the shelter is navigating one of its busiest seasons of the year. "It's usually about this time of the year, towards the end of summer, that we start to get full," said Martinez. “You hit May, June, July — things start creeping up. And then by the time you get to August, suddenly we have 70, 80 dogs in the kennel at any given time.” This influx of animals, particularly large dogs, is taking a toll on both the animals and the staff. “When our shelter starts to get too full, the animals get real stressed. They can get sick because there’s too many in too close of an environment. That extends their length of stay,” Martinez explained. As the only animal shelter serving all 72 municipalities in York County, the organization is legally required to accept all stray and displaced animals. That volume alone creates consistent strain, but summer presents unique challenges. “For cats, summer is their breeding season,” Martinez said. “By the time you get to the end of summer going into the fall, they’re in the third litter — and now we’re starting to get full.” Inside the shelter, the noise and constant activity can cause stress for animals, especially dogs. That stress often leads to poor health, which then delays adoption. “Stress equals bad health. Our job is to manage their health through enrichment,” Martinez said. “We try to get dogs out two to three times a day for a walk, put them in play groups, and teach them manners so that they’re better candidates for adoption.”Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The SPCA isn't just dealing with animal abuse its staff are increasingly in the firing line; facing verbal and physical threats. There has been 70 incidents reported so far this year, but the animal welfare protection agency believes the numbers are much higher with some staff just putting up with daily abuse. In one case a worker in Hawke's Bay had a cat thrown at them. SPCA general manager for animal services Dr Corey Regnerus-Kell spoke to Lisa Owen.

A desperate attempt to salvage a dying industry is how one animal welfare group has described a competition where a racing greyhound is the prize. Another said it raises serious ethical issues. Greyhound NZ has been offering part shares in a racing dog as a prize in a competition where entrants have to say why they oppose a ban on the sport. Both Safe and the SPCA have raised concerns about the competition. GRNZ board member and Greyhound trainer Craig Roberts spoke to Lisa Owen.
