When an Ohio man goes missing during his shift at a secretive nuclear weapons factory, his remains turn up in an unlikely location, shocking his family, co-workers and community. The untimely death of a devoted father is steeped in mystery—and radioactivity—in this episode of Last Seen Alive. If you have any information about the death of Dave Bocks, please contact the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office at 513-825-1500. See photos from this episode and check out the sources we used to research it here: https://lastseenalivepodcast.com/2023/05/08/unsolved-suspicious-death-dave-bocks/ And if you found this episode particularly intriguing, we recommend that you listen to our episode on the unsolved disappearance of Dale Kerstetter, if you haven't already. The two cases aren't related, but they share a lot of similarities.
The radioactive cloud of smoke out of the Fernald, Ohio nuclear plant NLO was not the only scandal to happen, but the disappearance and death of pipe fitter Dave Bocks has been questionable since 1984. We look at the allegations made by friends and family and talk about the thoughts. Though the case has not been declared a homicide, there is enough questionable activity to generate an Unsolved Mysteries episode and still leaves friends and family asking questions today. We look at whistleblowing and what could have happened that night in 1984, but also what happened in the United States before the Chernobyl incident regarding nuclear power and mistakes happening on this side of the ocean.

On June 19th 1984 Dave Bocks began his shift at the Fernald Feed Materials Production Center. It should have been a regular day, with a routine assignment of fixing a meter and valve in the number 8 plant at the facility. Near the end of his shift Dave was seen, for a final time, by a coworker. He would never be seen again. Only a few traces were left behind, including a crusty residue left in one of the plants furnaces.
In today's episode, We hear a story from Michelle about a anger fueled, extremely violent and disturbing woman named Kathrine Knight. Her crime is so brutal and graphic that she became Australia's first woman in the country's history to receive a life sentence without ever having the possibility to get out of prison. Falon also tells us a murder mystery story of Dave Bocks. Could it be a suicide or a giant cover up? You decide.Sources include: Wikipedia, Mental Floss, Unsolved Mysteries
This week sees Theo (formerly Amy Night: she/them) discuss a controversial crime from the late nineties which divided the United Kingdom. When Tony Martin shot a burglar in his home, the topic of being able to defend ones home raged around the country. Rachael enters the world of conspiracy with the death of Dave Bocks, a man who worked at a secret nuclear site. As always, the episode finishes with a dumb criminal. June 19, 1984. Fernald, Ohio. 39-year old Dave Bocks shows up to work the graveyard shift at the Fernald Feed Materials Production Center, a plant which processes uranium for nuclear weapons. Dave vanishes before his shift ends and evidence soon emerges that he fell into some molten liquid inside one of the plant's furnaces. The authorities initially suspect that Dave could have committed suicide and find no evidence of foul play, but months later, the plant is implicated in a major scandal involving radioactive contamination, leading to speculation that Dave was murdered for threatening to blow the whistle on unsafe practices at his workplace. Did Dave Bocks jump or accidentally fall to his death inside a 1,300-degree furnace? Or did someone kill him and intentionally place his body in there? This week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold” chronicles the controversial story of a plant which endangered a farming community and the unexplained death of one of its workers. Fernald would gain notoriety by 1984 when it was learned that the plant was releasing millions of pounds of uranium dust into the atmosphere, causing major radioactive contamination of the surrounding areas. That same year, employee Dave Bocks, a 39 year old pipefitter, disappeared during the facility’s graveyard shift and was later reported missing. Eventually, his remains were discovered inside a uranium processing furnace located in Plant 6; a sudden 28-degree drop in furnace temperature (which was kept at a constant 1300 degrees F) had been recorded at 5:15 AM during the night of Bocks’ disappearance. After the investigations, insufficient evidence was found relating to the death and the official ruling was that no foul play was involved. Some, however, including Bocks’ family, have believed that he was murdered by one or more coworkers who suspected him of being a whistleblower in the 1984 nuclear emissions scandal. Other theories included an industrial accident and suicide. It is believed that Dave Bocks was alive when he entered the furnace.
Did Dave Bocks swan dive into a white hot furnace in the worst suicide ever? Or did he have help? Once again, a mysterious death at a nuclear plan has us wondering if Big Nuke did bad things to hide worst things.
In 1984 Dave Bocks, a pipe fitter at a uranium processing factory, disappeared while working the graveyard shift, and days later his remains were found inside a uranium furnace. An accident? Suicide? Or... Murder...?
