We're closer to nuclear catastrophe than at any point since the Cold War. That's the warning from theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli.Drawing on his new book “85 Seconds to Midnight”, Rovelli argues that fear, not strength, is driving a dangerous new global arms race. He explains why he believes humanity has forgotten the lessons of Hiroshima, why today's rearmament risks repeating the mistakes of history, and how artificial intelligence could make the threat of nuclear war even greater. In this episode of Ways to Change the World, Krishnan Guru-Murthy speaks to theoretical physicist and bestselling author Carlo Rovelli about nuclear weapons, the morality of science, AI, international cooperation and why he believes humanity's greatest enemy is its own irrationality.
Our nuclear book club has now started on Patreon, and the first video is free to view. You can watch it at www.patreon.com/atomichoboThe first book was THE CHRYSALIDS but the second one, to be discussed in July, is ALAS BABYLON which is set in 1950s Florida, and so I thought we'd have a podcast episode looking at the local newspaper archives for Florida in that era. If you think of Florida as sun-kissed and care-free, it was slightly different under the nuclear tensions of '59. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Serhii Plokhy recounts how October 27, "Black Saturday," was the closest the world came to nuclear war as local commanders took control. In the Sargasso Sea, the Soviet submarine B-59, harassed by U.S. dummy depth charges, nearly fired a nuclear torpedo. Disaster was only averted by Vasily Arkhipov, who overruled the captain. Simultaneously, Soviet officers in Cuba shot down a U-2 plane, killing Major Anderson, without orders from Moscow. They believed the flight was a precursor to a bombing raid. Communication failures left the world's survival to pure luck. (7)1959

Catherine's theme this season was following her initial emotional reaction to a book, while Sarah's picks skew a bit outside of her usual comfort zone. Catherine chose books across historical fiction, cultural fiction, romance, humor, and thriller. One of the season's more challenging reads for Catherine comes from an author she trusts, while Sarah has two books over 450 pages. There's one debut in Sarah's stack this season — along with some historical fiction. Sarah has already read one of her picks — not only was it 5 stars, it's already a strong contender for book of the year. Plus, their #1 picks for summer. It's Threads Day! So what better excuse to have Dr Malcom Craig back in Derry & Toms to talk about NUCLEAR WAR, and particularly General Sir John Hackett's The Third World War: August 1985 (1978) and its sequel The Third World War: The Untold Story (1982). As we're both gamers, and Malcolm has an academic interest in it too, we also get into it with GDW's Twilight 2000 RPG, arguably the ultimate expression of the speculative World War Three RPG genre. A game that transformed our Cold War fears into the participatory storytelling of the RPG format, and allowed players to wander the ruins of post-nuclear Europe while tracking ammunition, diesel fuel, rads, rations, and the collapse of NATO command structures in all the meticulous detail a teenage nerd could delight in. Just after Donald Trump's first term began, he announced that he was considering eliminating the Federal Emergency Management Agency — the agency that helps Americans amid unthinkable disasters. And just a month ago, Trump repeated his disdain for FEMA, declaring that he's poised to make some big changes. On this week's On the Media, we present the first installment in a four-part series called American Emergency: The Movement to Kill FEMA. In this episode, OTM co-host Micah Loewinger tells the origin story of FEMA — which initially focused less on disaster relief and more on plans to save the government from nuclear attack. The agency's secrecy inspired wild conspiracy theories and paranoia among far-right groups, including the fear that FEMA is building camps to detain citizens and stifle political dissent. The episode culminates with a never-before-told story of a plot to stalk FEMA's top brass in the nineties. It's fiction—but it may be closer to reality than we'd like to admit.During the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union came dangerously close to nuclear conflict more than once. Not always because of aggression—but because of fear, miscommunication, and systems that weren't as reliable as they seemed. In this episode, we explore the moments where everything almost went wrong. From global crises to chilling false alarms, and finally to one man—Stanislav Petrov—who made a decision that may have prevented catastrophe. This isn't just history. It's a reminder of how thin the line between survival and disaster has always been.Support the show
In this episode, Robert challenges the idea that today's market mirrors past bubbles and explains why the current AI cycle may be earlier than most believe. He breaks down the shift from heavy spending to real usage, why that distinction matters, and how it's shaping his investment approach. He also covers how he's thinking about opportunities within the AI ecosystem, the difference between broad exposure and more targeted plays, and key factors he's watching in the near term. The episode closes with thoughts on risk management, common investor mistakes, and why mindset plays a bigger role than most people realize.

In the fall of 1983, NATO's annual nuclear war exercise, Able Archer 83, brought the United States and the Soviet Union closer to catastrophe than almost anyone in Washington understood at the time. Brian J. Morra—decorated former Air Force intelligence officer, aerospace executive, and author of the historical thriller The Able Archers—was inside those events: stationed in Tokyo during the KAL 007 shootdown, transferred to Washington just as the crisis peaked, and present in Germany as Soviet nuclear alerts reached levels never seen before or since. He walks Chris through the paranoia that drove Operation RYAN, the Kremlin's vast intelligence collection effort premised on the certainty of a NATO first strike; why mirror imaging at CIA left Reagan largely uninformed; and how three individuals—General Charles Donnelly, Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov, and General Leonard Perutz—each exercised the kind of cool judgment that kept the crisis from tipping into war. Morra draws the line from 1983 to the present: when leadership on opposing sides stops talking directly, the system fails—and that failure, he argues, looks familiar today.Subscribe and share to stay ahead in the world of intelligence, global issues, and current affairs.Learn more about Brian and his work: https://brianjmorra.com/Order The Able Archers: https://brianjmorra.com/the-able-archers/Support Secrets and SpiesBecome a “Friend of the Podcast” on Patreon for £3/$4: https://www.patreon.com/SecretsAndSpiesBuy merchandise from our shop: https://www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/60934996Buy us a coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/secretsandspiesSubscribe to our YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDVB23lrHr3KFeXq4VU36dgFor more information about the podcast, check out our website: https://secretsandspiespodcast.comConnect with us on social media Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/secretsandspies.bsky.socialInstagram: https://instagram.com/secretsandspiesFacebook: https://facebook.com/secretsandspiesSpoutible: https://spoutible.com/SecretsAndSpiesFollow Chris and Matt on Bluesky:https://bsky.app/profile/chriscarrfilm.bsky.socialhttps://bsky.app/profile/mattfulton.netSecrets and Spies is produced by Films & Podcasts LTD: https://filmsandpodcasts.co.uk/Music by Andrew R. Send us Fan MailDonald Trump just posted a message warning of the “end of civilization”—and people are asking a terrifying question: what does he mean?In this video, Tony Michaels breaks down Trump's latest social media post and why experts are raising alarms about the potential for war crimes, escalation with Iran, and even nuclear conflict. With tensions rising in the Middle East and ongoing threats surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, this situation could have massive consequences for global oil markets, the U.S. economy, and millions of lives.Iran has already warned that closing the Strait of Hormuz is on the table if military strikes continue. Now, Trump's rhetoric is escalating and critics fear he may be signaling a willingness to take extreme and dangerous action.
Steve Schmidt joined The Left Hook with Wajahat Ali to talk about the chaos caused by Donald Trump's threats that a "whole civilization will die tonight" as his 8 pm ET deadline looms. They also talked about the cowardice and complicity of the Republican party in helping an unhinged and desperate Trump threaten nuclear war to mask his failure in Iran. SEASON 4 EPISODE 76: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: The OTHER part of Dementia J. Trump’s vile, multi-religion blasphemous Easter post is the operative part “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge day… “There will be nothing like it… “You’ll be living in Hell… "Just watch…” All that was followed four hours and 35 minutes later by quote “Tuesday 8:00 PM Eastern Time," plus phone calls to his media stenographers: If there’s no deal Monday he’s quote “blowing up the whole country” and “I am blowing up everything over there." What that is, is at least a threat to use tactical nuclear weapons against Iran. Even if it’s JUST a threat, or the “nuclear” part is hyperbole, it is still a threat to use massive amounts of conventional ordnance but Trump of course has longed to use nuclear weapons since the first term, asking his generals why we had them if we didn’t use them. He wants to. He's a sadist who wants to see people die. And of course, he IS crazy: “I know him… and… he has gone insane.” Marjorie Taylor Greene said that. Oh and her postscript, as she joined our Club Reality: “Our president is not a Christian.” This is still all about the Strait of Hormuz, which Trump said was irrelevant and would open itself and about which he has held 28 public positions in the last 35 days. So here we are. Tomorrow is either TACO Tuesday or Thermonuclear Tuesday. THE ALTERNATIVE VIEW: This is Trump's fault regardless, but could he have been manipulated into it by a soft-rollout Military Coup against the civilian government, led by Hegseth and the other religious nuts in the Pentagon? And when did this America actually go off the rails? You can point at the day Trump came down the escalator it didn't extend to hell. You could look at the sign-on of Fox News Channel. Just as relevant: January 19, 2009 and one of the last decisions by a President-Elect who taught future Republican leaders that the laws would not be enforced against them. B-Block (48:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Jeff Shell, who is one of the two people primarily responsible for scuttling my planned return to MSNBC in 2019-20-21, is about to get fired as a network president for the second time in three years. Sometimes I wonder: could it be me, and not them? In this case, I don't wonder. Plus Rep. Andy Ogles, baseball's Texas Rangers (MLB is boasting of 40% diversity; they rolled out an opening day line-up of 10 white guys and a statue of a Texas racist, and those who pushed a pastor claiming Trump was about to be the recipient of biblical "golden showers" make up the rest of the list. C-Block (1:02:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: A lot of the yap on Threads over the weekend was about the late lamented food chain "Boston Market" and who killed it. Well, my bad, that was me. The story of the brilliant commercials I did for them that worked so well, but every time it worked it cost them $12!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jürgen von Hagen, pastor and former professor of economics at the University of Bonn, again joins OOOM to discuss pacifism, military conscription, and the impact of global economics on the spread of democracy around the world. How should Christians serve their governments during times of war? How should peace be pursued—by ignoring conflicts, by making every nation a medium-sized power, by hegemony, by regime change and the installation of democracy? How should Christians think about global conflicts, particularly the current war in Iran?Mentioned in the episode:Carnage & Culture: Landmark Battles in the Rise of Western Power (2001) by Victor Davis Hanson***Out of Our Minds Podcast: Pastors Who Say What They Think. In 1964, while guarding Minuteman nuclear missiles at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Barth says a non-human entity made contact — and delivered a warning about nuclear war that touches the heart of national security at its most classified level. On this episode of The Good Trouble Show, Matt Ford sits down with Barth and UFO researcher Robert Hastings — author of UFOs and Nukes and the man who spent 40 years documenting military UAP incidents at nuclear weapons facilities — for a conversation six decades in the making. It's one of the most compelling UAP witness accounts ever recorded: a credentialed military eyewitness, a nuclear missile site, and a message the government never wanted public. Institutional "smart money" bought back a majority of the midday pullback.Defense Sector Gains: Historically, wartime events involving US munitions and aerospace are positive for the domestic economy. Leading names like Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Northrop Grumman are positioned for massive government contracts.Real Estate Distress: Commercial loans flagged for foreclosure in Texas topped $800 million for the fourth consecutive month. Roughly 70% of these properties are apartment complexes, signaling a major oversupply in previously "frothy" markets.Rate Cut Timeline: Goldman Sachs maintains that a June rate cut is the base case scenario. Current futures markets price in a 36% chance for June and a 43% chance for July.Episode Sponsored By:Discover Financial Millionaire Mindcast Shop: Buy the Rich Life Planner and Get the Wealth-Building Bundle for FREE! In February, America's nuclear arms treaty with Russia expired, ushering in “a global rush for new weapons,” according to New York Times. Much of the next generation of the US nuclear arsenal will be developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which has been designing and testing nuclear weapons since the early 1950s. The Lab's history of hiding hazardous health impacts, security failures, and other troubling behavior should raise concerns not only in eastern Alameda County, but across the entire region. This episode features interviews with Marylia Kelley and Scott Yundt of Tri-Valley CARES, a watchdog group that's been monitoring the Livermore Lab and advocating for community safety since 1983. Additionally, Sherry Pratt, a retired Lab employee and cancer survivor, joins the program to share her story. Listen now to hear about the stunning history of Lawrence Livermore National Lab, the origins of the nuclear weapons complex, and why transparency around the Lab's operations is shrinking while its budget is booming. Lawrence Freedman is the dean of strategic studies. He's written books about the Falklands War, nuclear strategy, political-military relations, Kennedy's foreign policy, the revolution of military affairs, and (my personal favorite) the history of strategy. Freedman is now part of the father-son writing duo samf.substack.com. Note: we recorded this in the summer of 2023. Thanks to the Hudson Institute for sponsoring this conversation. In this far-reaching conversation, we discuss: How the Falklands saved Thatcher's premiership, making her the Iron Lady, Why the great strategic decisions of history rarely have clear, pivotal moments, Parallels between Putin, Xi, and the Argentine junta — what the Falklands campaign tells us about Ukraine, Taiwan, and the future of war, How nuclear war went from being a “winnable” geopolitical contest to the apocalyptic dog that didn't bark, What Cold War arms control treaties can and can't tell us about AI, The best strategists not covered by last week's interview with Hal Brands, Lawrence Freedman's recipe for wide reading and prolific writing. Today's episode is the third and final of David's conversations with S. M. Amadae about nuclear weapons and nuclear war, this time looking to the future. What are the prospects for nuclear disarmament in the 21st century? How does the risk of nuclear war intersect with other existential risks, from climate change to AI? Is the world more dangerous than it has ever been? What are the grounds for hope we might still get out of this alive? Out tomorrow on PPF+: a bonus episode to accompany this series of conversations in which David explores John Hersey's Hiroshima (1946), the definitive account of what it's actually like to be on the receiving end of a nuclear attack. In today's episode David talks to S. M. Amadae about what happened when the nuclear age turned into an all-consuming arms race. What is the supposed logic and the terrifying illogic behind the idea of Mutually Assured Destruction? What is the difference between M.A.D. and N.U.T.S.? Do we really believe that our leaders would press the button? And how have we managed to survive to this point – rationality, luck or merely a stay of execution? For decades, the threat of total nuclear annihilation cast a long shadow on everyday life. Nowadays, it almost seems like an old-fashioned kind of fear. Unfortunately, the possibility of human civilization ending at the touch of a button is more real than we think. Journalist Annie Jacobsen's book NUCLEAR WAR: A Scenario outlines an excruciating and fascinating play-by-play of how the world as we know it could go up in smoke.
