This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! PART TWOAs a child, Christie Williams found herself drawn to stories of the unexplained, fueled by late-night television and the unsettling narration of Unsolved Mysteries, hosted by Robert Stack. What began as curiosity soon became a lifelong pursuit of answers about whether ghosts—and darker forces—could truly exist.Over time, Christie moved beyond investigation and into immersion, taking on the responsibility of owning a notoriously haunted house and operating an oddities museum filled with objects said to carry their own histories. One question loomed large: what happens when haunted objects are placed inside a building that's already active?Christie talks about her experiences navigating both the light and dark sides of the paranormal—what she's witnessed, what she's learned, and how living among the unexplained changed her understanding of the supernatural.#TheGraveTalks #HauntedObjects #ParanormalPodcast #OdditiesMuseum #HauntedHouses #GhostStories #UnsolvedMysteries #ParanormalInvestigationLove real ghost stories? Comedy is the hardest genre to get right. Making people laugh once is tough; making them laugh for decades is almost impossible. Yet here we are in 2026, revisiting a film released in 1980 that still lands gags at a rate modern comedies can only dream of. This week on Born to Watch, Whitey and Gow tackle the undisputed benchmark of parody comedy in our Flying High (Airplane) Review, a movie that didn't just spoof disaster films; it rewired comedy forever.Known as Flying High here in Australia and Airplane! Everywhere else, this is the film that taught generations how powerful straight-faced absurdity can be. Serious actors, ridiculous situations, relentless visual gags and a script that fires jokes every few seconds without ever stopping to catch its breath. Watching it again now raises the big question: Does it still work in 2026?The short answer, absolutely. From the opening Jaws parody at the airport to the final moments on the runway, this film never lets up. There are jokes in the foreground, jokes in the background, jokes buried inside other jokes, and blink-and-you-miss-it moments that reward repeat viewings again and again. Whitey and Gow break down just how outrageous the gag density really is, and why that non-stop approach is exactly what modern comedies have lost. The cast is a huge part of what makes Flying High work so well. Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves and Leslie Nielsen all play it completely straight, refusing to wink at the audience even once. That contrast between deadly serious performances and utterly ridiculous dialogue is the secret sauce. Leslie Nielsen, in particular, launches what would become one of the great comedy second acts of all time, delivering lines like “Surely you can't be serious” with such conviction that it somehow makes them even funnier.Whitey and Gow also dig into the sheer insanity of the situations. A full hospital bed loaded onto a commercial flight. A child needing a heart transplant mid-air. Everyone eating the fish except the one person who doesn't get sick. A blow-up autopilot. A guitar smashing passengers in the head as it walks down the aisle. None of it makes sense, and none of it is supposed to.Overs and unders are discussed, with both hosts landing comfortably in the 35 to 40 watch range, a testament to just how embedded this movie is in their DNA. It's the kind of film that was always in rotation growing up, something the whole family could watch, quote and laugh at together. That shared comedy experience is something Whitey argues we no longer get.The episode also explores how Flying High set the template for everything that followed, from Naked Gun to Hot Shots and beyond, while also pointing out why so many parody films failed to replicate its magic. Awareness of what you are, commitment to the bit, and never stopping the joke train.Critical scores still back it up. A 7.7 on IMDb, 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a spot alongside absolute classics in movie history. Not bad for a film that proudly advertised itself as the winner of zero Academy Awards. This episode is packed with favourite scenes, forgotten gags, pop culture moments, questionable jokes that still somehow work, and plenty of Born to Watch side tangents along the way. If you love comedy, parody, or just laughing out loud at things you probably shouldn't, this is one episode you don't want to miss.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONIs Flying High the funniest comedy ever made?Which gag still kills you every time?Could a movie like this even get made today?Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or at BornToWatch.com.au#FlyingHigh #AirplaneMovie #BornToWatch #ComedyClassic #MoviePodcast #80sMovies #ParodyFilms #FilmReview #CultCinema #LaughOutLoud
Rob speaks with Robert Stack, President and CEO of Community Options, a nonprofit that has been at the forefront of providing safe, dignified, and inclusive care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Stack shares his personal journey that led him into this field, beginning with volunteering as a young seminarian and evolving into decades of nonprofit leadership. Robert offers eye-opening insights into the challenges and injustices still facing the disability care sector—from exploitative practices by private equity firms to deeply flawed state-run institutions. He also outlines Community Options' impactful approach: prioritizing person-centered care, scaling nonprofit services responsibly, and advocating for inclusive employment that uplifts people with disabilities. His book, Silent No Longer, is a call to action for society to demand dignity and rights for all individuals, regardless of ability. Key Topics Include: The negative impact of private equity investment in disability care services How state-run institutions often prioritize employment over quality care The injustice of sub-minimum wages and legal aversion therapies still used in some states The importance of inclusive employment and its social benefits for individuals with disabilities Community Options' approach to personalized care and their growth across 12 states Why mentorship and dignity-driven programming lead to better outcomes What Robert Stack hopes readers take away from his book Silent No Longer Mentioned in This Episode: Community Options RobertStack.org Silent No Longer (Book) This Episode is Sponsored By: DonorBox Links to Resources: Interested in Leadership and Life Coaching? Long before Santa slid down chimneys, other figures roamed the winter nights — and they weren't bringing presents. In “The Imposter”, a woman, despite having no theatrical background, is suddenly inspired to write a full-length play — with the ghostly help of a long-dead actor. When the play turns out to be a hit, she tries to take all the credit for it. But the real author's spirit isn't having it and demands that her name be removed from the marquee. | #RetroRadio EP0571CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate)…00:00:00.000 = Show Open00:01:30.028 = CBS Radio Mystery Theater, “The Imposter” (March 22, 1977) ***WD00:45:34.027 = Eleventh Hour, “Will” (1941-1946) ***WD01:14:24.935 = Escape, “Red Wine” (February 26, 1949)01:43:51.535 = Everyman's Theater, “This Precious Freedom” (October 04, 1940) ***WD02:11:07.323 = Murder By Experts, “Murder By Prescription” (July 11, 1949)02:40:34.581 = Exploring Tomorrow, “The Last Doctor” (February 19, 1958)02:59:01.191 = Faces in The Window, “Lightning Rod Man” (January 17, 1953) ***WD (LQ)03:22:41.516 = Dark Fantasy, “Debt From The Past” (January 16, 1942)03:46:52.517 = Fear on 4, “The Chimes of Midnight” (October 02, 1997) ***WD04:14:52.809 = 5 Minute Mysteries, “Broken Window” (1947-1950)04:19:55.490 = Tales From The Tomb, “Don't Drink With Strangers” (1960s)04:23:35.238 = BBC Ghosts From The Past, “The Boat Hook” (April 15, 1992)05:07:02.739 = Show Close(ADU) = Air Date Unknown(LQ) = Low Quality***WD = Remastered, edited, or cleaned up by Weird Darkness to make the episode more listenable. Long before Dickens penned A Christmas Carol, our ancestors gathered around midwinter fires to tell tales of spirits and monsters lurking in the darkness. Tonight, we explore why Christmas and ghost stories have been intertwined for thousands of years — then share true accounts that prove the tradition is very much alive. #HolidayHorrorsIN THIS EPISODE: Earlier this month I shared some true reports of people seeing Kris Kringle – or what appeared to be Kris Kringle – in real life. But there are many more of those strange sightings to share! (More Real Santa Sightings) *** Christmas has been celebrated for centuries, and gift-giving has been around in America since well before the Civil War. But how we celebrate and what we give changes depending on the time. We'll take a look at what Christmas was like for American pioneers in the 1800s. (Christmas in The Old West) *** At a Christmas party the revelers heard a horrifying scream from outside. They rushed out to hear the screams were coming from the sky, at least above the rooftops. But how could that be? It was then that they learned Oliver Lerch had disappeared – never to be seen again. (The Christmas Disappearance of Oliver Lerch) *** Nothing says Christmas like a poisonous weed! Well… you explain mistletoe! We'll look at why we're supposed to kiss under this deadly plant during the holidays. (A Kiss Under the Mistletoe) *** A horrible fire breaks out at an Oklahoma school during the holidays of 1924 – and the ghosts of the children still linger at the site. (Ghosts of the Babbs Switch School Christmas Fire) *** You might be celebrating Christmas like a viking and not even realize it. From the holiday ham to the evergreen in your living room, we'll look at how the pagan celebration of Yule influenced modern Christmas traditions. (How To Celebrate Christmas Like a Viking) *** Kids in America anxiously await the arrival of Santa Claus bounding down the chimney with gifts and candy for the good little boys and girls. But that's America. What comes down the chimney of Irish and Scottish kids may not be so jolly, plump, and loving. Some Gaelic children have to watch out for the Bodach. (Beware the Bodach at Christmas) *** It's something we're trying to revive here on Weird Darkness… the lost tradition of telling ghost stories at Christmas. It was Christmastime — a season of peace, light, and goodwill — which made the slow unraveling of their minds all the more disturbing.IN THIS EPISODE: Despite being in the middle of the first World War, on Christmas Day, 1914 British and German soldiers sang carols together, exchanged gifts with the enemy combatants, and supposedly even played a soccer game against each other in order to celebrate the holiday. Hollywood says Krampus is an ancient Christmas demon with roots in pagan mythology — but there's no evidence any of that is true. The real story of how this monster came to be is stranger than any legend. #HolidayHorrorsIN THIS EPISODE: We're all familiar with the poem “A Visit From St. Nicholas” – better known as, “Twas The Night Before Christmas”. But while we know the poem, we can't be quite as sure about who wrote it. (The Christmas Poem That Started a Feud) *** One of the great (and now, sadly, lapsed) Christmas traditions is the telling of ghost stories. On one particular year, a British teenager took this pastime to a whole other level. He didn't read about a Christmas Eve haunting. He experienced one. (The Phantom Choir of St. Albans) *** The past few years have made Krampus, the Christmas devil, a star of the big screen. But have you noticed that every version of him is different than the others? This may of course be in part to creative license, but it might have just as much if not more to do with the fact that none of the filmmakers had any idea of just what Krampus truly is, what he is all about, and how terrifying he can be. A doctor begins treating a woman who insists that a glowing, supernatural figure — the Shining Man — has been appearing to her. She claims this radiant entity warns her of danger and even predicts deaths. At first the doctor chalks it up to stress and hallucination… until he starts encountering disturbing coincidences that match her visions. The deeper he digs, the more he's pulled into a mystery that blurs the line between psychic prophecy and something genuinely otherworldly. Before convicts were shipped to Australia, they rotted aboard decommissioned warships anchored in the Thames — floating dungeons so brutal that a condemned man called them "a college of villainy" where every prisoner graduated "a master of arts in scoundrelism."IN THIS EPISODE: It was in 1975 when the first skull of what was believed to be Bigfoot was found. But the owner of the skull hadn't been dead too long, for the local people said they remembered the creature before it died. And even more shocking – they personally knew some of its descendants – a cross-breeding of Bigfoot and human beings! (Villagers Remember Descendants of Bigfoot) *** A young woman falls unconscious and awakes with a fantastical story about fairies kissing her, how she was treated like a princess by them, and falling in love with one of the fairy men. While you might say it was just a fanciful dream, how do you explain that this girl also woke up with clairvoyant abilities? (The Fairies and Anne Jeffries) *** On 15 July 1910 the Sheffield Evening Telegraph recorded the anniversaries of the day. One particular entry was this: “Prison hulks first seen on the Thames…1776”. But what were the prison hulks, and what was life like on board these ‘floating hells,' as they came to be known? (Floating Hells) ***Depending on whether or not you want to get the scare of your life, you will either want to, or not want to honk your car's horn three times on Burnt Mill Road in the Pine Barrens area of New Jersey. If you do, you risk an encounter with the Atco Ghost. (The Atco Ghost Legend of New Jersey) *** Archaeologists excavating the tomb of an ancient Egyptian queen just discovered something chilling… a 13-foot long scroll – a lost chapter from Egypt's “Book of the Dead”. (Queen Nearit's Book of the Dead) *** Feeling the Lord Ganesha wanted milk, a man ran to get some and placed it before the elephant headed statue in a temple near his home. A German occultist stole Bram Stoker's Dracula to make a film about pandemic fears, Stoker's widow ordered every copy burned, and yet Nosferatu survived to become the most influential vampire movie ever made.IN THIS EPISODE: The 1922 horror classic "Nosferatu" still turns up, on TV and on college campuses every Halloween. And it'll likely show up again somewhere this year as well. In this episode we'll look at how Nosferatu isterrifyingly relevant even still today, the controversial making of the film – and the lawsuit by Bram Stoker's wife, how the director of the film was involved in the occult… and how you would not have wanted to miss the film's premiere which was an unforgettable, epic event all by itself. That and a whole lot more about 1922's Nosferatu, on this episode of Weird Darkness. From Norse frost giants to the Bible's Goliath, tales of giants have haunted humanity for centuries — but in 2002, US soldiers in Afghanistan claim they encountered a 12-foot, six-fingered, blade-wielding giant that killed one of their own before they brought it down.IN THIS EPISODE: Did U.S. Special Forces really shoot dead a 12-foot-tall giant in Kandahar, Afghanistan? How much truth is behind the story – and how does fit into the age-old narrative of soldiers, knights, and heroes battling against and vanquishing giants and monstrous creatures? (The Giant of Kandahar) *** Soon after the Cranmer family moved in to their new home on Brownsville Road, it became clear that they were not alone. (The Demon of Brownsville Road) *** The Elephant's Foot was created after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 when reactor 4 exploded, releasing a lava-like mass of radioactive material called corium. So radioactive that it's still dangerous if you try and see it for yourself today. (The Elephant's Foot of Chernobyl) *** When something horrifying happens, it's natural to tell others about your experience. But what if, no matter how much you explain it, people simply don't believe you? We'll look at numerous stories from people who have true tales that they have a hard time getting even friends and family to take seriously. (Nobody Believes Me) *** When a great famine struck Europe in 1314, mothers abandoned their children and in some cases, even ate them. Scholars believe that these tragedies gave birth to the story of Hansel and Gretel. (The Grim True Story Behind Hansel and Gretel) *** Cultures all around the world have stories of tiny humans – elves, leprechauns, fairies, hobbits… but how can so many different communities have such similar descriptions of tiny people? Could there be evidence to prove the existence of tiny humanoids? (Little Human Subspecies) *** Traveling to the Superstition Mountains in search of the rumored treasure hidden there is not only a bad idea… it could be a fatal one. (Mysterious Visitors From Other Realms) *** Seeing an unidentified flying object in the sky is pretty common – even in cases where several people see the flying whatever-it-is at the same time. But when is the last time you and everyone around you looked up and saw an entire city flying in the sky? That's what happened in 2011 in the Nigerian village of Bauchi. (UFO City) *** But first… according to GPS, off the California coast there are dozens, possibly hundreds of ships moving around in circles. But the ships, while clearly visible on the GPS system, are nowhere to be seen by the human eye. Are these ghost ships from the past? The oceanic version of crop circles? Sailing ships from a different dimension? Or could it be something more disturbing, like a new type of cyber attack? We begin with that story. A grieving couple's desperate wish brings something to their door in W.W. Jacobs' 1902 classic, 'The Monkey's Paw.' Then, H.P. Lovecraft reveals the disturbing truth behind one artist's unnervingly lifelike paintings in 'Pickman's Model.IN THIS EPISODE: "The Monkey's Paw" was first published in England in 1902. Without giving any spoilers, in the story, three wishes are granted to the owner of The Monkey's Paw, but the wishes come with an enormous price for interfering with fate. It has been adapted to film and stage numerous times… and, of course, now, as a podcast episode. *** Famed horror author H.P. Lovecraft brings us his tale, “Pickman's Model”. H.P. Lovecraft released the story in 1927, so you might want to consider that for context and perspective while listening. “EXORCISM” by Ray Bradbury | When her mailman husband delivered a package of forbidden books to the woman up the street, Elmira Brown finally had proof of what she'd suspected all along — and she wasn't about to let a witch win another election.IN THIS EPISODE: The name Ray Bradbury immediately brings to mind such fictional tales – classics, many of them… some of which I've narrated here in the podcast such as “The Jar”, “Skeleton”, and “The Small Assassin.” But as good as Bradbury was at writing about the paranormal, he could also write comedy – and in tonight's story he combines the two. “Exorcism” is a fun short tale about a nosy housewife who suspects an older woman in town is studying to become a witch… and decides to confront the old lady to voice her disapproval. A nine-foot skeleton with a skull nearly a foot wide, 28 interlocking teeth, and three-toed clawed feet was discovered buried under a Japanese temple — and men risked their lives to bring it to America. Did they dig up the skeleton of a demon, or the Devil himself? (Read the deep-dive article on the Weird Darkness website:https://weirddarkness.com/satan-skull/)IN THIS EPISODE: “The Devil Is Dead Now, And Here Is His Skeleton!” That's the headline that ran in the Los Angeles Herald on October 6th, 1865. And this was no 19th century click-bait… they actually found real bones that fit the bill. (Satan's Skeleton) *** There are a number of tragic cases where people lose all memory of who they are, and, for whatever reason, no one is able to help them recover their identities. However, few such stories are as complicated and uncanny as the long, long search for the real “Charles Jamison.” (The Man Without a Past) *** Imagine suddenly, without warning, finding yourself in a completely different life. A different place to live, different friends and family. Nothing is the same. This is what happened to author Caroline Leavitt – but that's only half of her truly bizarre story! A skull found in a Mexican mine 90 years ago has features that no single known medical condition can fully explain. Doctors and scientists have studied this misshapen skull for decades, but no one can agree on what it actually is.IN THIS EPISODE: If you are into aliens or conspiracies, you've likely heard of the StarChild skull – a strange skull that appears either misshapen, or – as many believe – is the skull of a hybrid between extraterrestrials and human beings. What is the truth behind the StarChild? (What Is The StarChild?) *** In the 1700s life-saving techniques were obviously not as advanced as those we have today. Case in point – one doctor wanted to know if and how a drowned person might be brought back to life. The solution? Go to a hanging and try to revive the executed man. How do you think that went? (The Hanged Man) *** We've spoken often here on Weird Darkness about shadow people – what their purpose is, where they come from, whether they are malevolent or not… but are they ghosts, or something else entirely? (Are Shadow People Considered Ghosts?) *** A Reddit user shares his true story of hiking in the wilderness and suddenly being tracked and hunted over several days by a stranger with unknown intentions. (A Strange Man Hunted Me Through The Park) *** Within the walls of one of England's most picturesque castles, a queen gave birth to her only child and set in motion a chain of events that would become one of Tudor England's most intriguing mysteries.
