On May 20, 2016, ICU nurse Amber Kornhorst set out on a solo late-afternoon hike near Cane Beds, Arizona, and climbed a deceptively "sticky" sandstone wall she couldn't safely descend. With no cell service and no way out, she fell about 100 feet into a narrow rock "dungeon," suffering three spinal fractures, a crushed pelvis, head and facial injuries, severe dehydration, and hypothermia — and typed goodbye messages to her family on her phone. Refusing to give up, she crawled and climbed to a more visible ledge and blew her whistle three blasts every half hour until search-and-rescue teams and a helicopter located her nearly 24 hours later, executing a technical rope raise and hover-load evacuation to a Utah hospital. Her story drives home survival essentials: always tell someone your plan, never hike alone, start early, carry extra water and a whistle, consider a satellite communicator, and never climb anything you can't safely descend. 00:46 Show Intro And Setup 01:40 Amber Hits The Trail 03:02 Climbing The Sandstone Wave 04:10 No Way Down Desert Trap 05:32 The Hundred Foot Fall 06:20 Shock And Goodbye Texts 08:27 Painful Climb And Whistle 11:03 Search Effort Mobilizes 12:41 Helicopter Spots Her 14:16 Technical Rope Rescue 16:10 Hover Pickup Extraction 17:02 Helicopter Evacuation 17:43 Hospital Recovery Journey 19:06 Why She Survived 19:43 Whistle and Visibility 21:55 Search Mobilized Fast 22:50 Wilderness Safety Takeaways 25:03 Desert Hiking Mistakes 27:08 Survival Mindset Lessons 29:47 Final Wrap and Credits Listen AD FREE: Support our podcast at patreaon: http://patreon.com/TheCruxTrueSurvivalPodcast Email us! thecruxsurvival@gmail.com Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thecruxpodcast/ Get schooled by Julie in outdoor wilderness medicine! https://www.headwatersfieldmedicine.com/ Primary/First-Person Account Kohnhorst, Amber. In the canon of Final Destination imitators, Whistle is a gift. Corin Hardy's ode to teen slashers is a nifty blend of "artifact horror" and young-adult perspectives. There are many films based on the inability to cheat Death, but writer Owen Egerton finds a unique twist to keep us hooked. It's a cozy late-night programmer that fits alongside other Shudder titles like Clown in a Cornfield, one that's respectful of its audience yet focused on easy-breezy genre entertainment. Hardy keeps it simple and aims to put a smile on horror fans' faces, which is just fine in our book.
https://teachhoops.com/ The secret to an efficient practice isn't working faster; it's eliminating "dead time." Most practices lose 15–20 minutes to "coach-speak," long lines, and slow transitions between drills. To combat this, adopt the "Whistle-to-Whistle" mentality. Every segment should have a pre-determined start time and a countdown clock. Use "Transition Sprints"—where players have 7 seconds to get to their next station—to keep the heart rate elevated. By scripting your practice in 6- to 8-minute blocks, you force yourself to be concise with instruction and your players to stay mentally sharp. Remember, the goal is "Rep Density": the number of game-like touches an athlete gets per minute of practice. The second pillar of efficiency is the "Station-Based" approach to fundamentals. Instead of having 12 players standing in one line for a layup drill, break them into three groups of four at different baskets. This triples the number of repetitions each player receives in the same amount of time. During these stations, utilize "Multi-Skill Drills"—exercises that combine two or more skills, such as a close-out into a box-out, or a ball-handling move into a finishing move. When you "stack" skills, you aren't just practicing ball-handling; you are building the "functional athleticism" required to execute that handle under defensive pressure. Finally, utilize "Visual Learning" and "Pre-Practice Briefings" to save time on the court. Send your practice plan or a short 2-minute film clip of a new play to your players via group chat before they arrive at the gym. This allows you to spend your precious hardwood time "refining" rather than "installing." When players step on the floor already knowing the "what" and the "where," you can immediately jump into the "how" at game-speed. In the mid-season grind, this proactive communication is what separates the programs that plateau from the programs that peak. For Deborah Locke, joining the NSW Police was a ticket to a better life. After joining the police in 1984, Deborah found herself in the seedy underbelly of police corruption. Bribery, drinking, and sexual harassment were commonplace - until Deborah decided she had to stand up for what was right, even if it cost her everything. The Wood Royal Commission was a turning point in Australian policing. This is the story of how it came to be.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's tense, emotional, and it definitely made us think twice about our next family reunion!Fun Flix Fact: Despite the heavy on-screen drama, the cast spent their breaks having high-stakes board game tournaments on set. Apparently, Kyle Chandler is a formidable Monopoly player and kept the bank on lockdown between takes!Next, we're hitting the road for Crime 101, the gritty heist thriller that everyone's talking about. It's a high-octane game of cat-and-mouse between a brilliant jewel thief (Chris Hemsworth) and a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) along the Pacific Coast Highway.Fun Flix Fact: This film marks a massive on-screen reunion for Hemsworth and Ruffalo. To prepare for their rivalry, they avoided each other on set for the first few weeks of filming to keep their on-screen tension as authentic as possible! If you're a fan of a good fright, you'll love our review of Whistle. When a group of teenagers discovers an ancient, cursed whistle, they inadvertently summon an entity that hunts anyone who hears its call. It's "don't make a sound" taken to a terrifying new level.Fun Flix Fact: Director Corin Hardy is a legend when it comes to practical effects. He insisted that the "Creature" be played by a physical performer in a custom suit rather than using CGI, meaning the terrified reactions from the young cast are often very, very real! For this week's Anniversary Corner, we're hacking into the mainframe to celebrate 25 years of the slick, stylish Swordfish. Starring Halle Berry, John Travolta, and Hugh Jackman, it's the ultimate early-2000s tech-thriller.Fun Flix Fact: The film's incredible opening explosion was filmed using a "bullet-time" rig featuring 135 different cameras. At the time, it was one of the most expensive and complex practical stunts ever choreographed for a film! And if that's not enough entertainment for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. Press play for the friendliest film discussions this side of Hollywood! It's all the movies you love, the facts you need, and the banter you crave.Don't miss a single review! In this episode, host Giles Alderson (The Dare) sits down with acclaimed director Corin Hardy for an in-depth conversation about craft, career trajectory, and working within the horror genre. Corin Hardy is an award-winning filmmaker, illustrator, sculptor, and writer known for a striking visual style that blends the macabre with the epic and the beautiful. After studying theatre design at Wimbledon School of Art, Hardy created the award-winning stop-motion short Butterfly (2004), which launched his directing career. He went on to direct acclaimed music videos for major artists, before making his feature debut with The Hallow, which premiered at Sundance and won multiple international awards. He later directed the global horror hit The Nun, part of The Conjuring Universe, and most recently completed his latest feature Whistle. In this episode, we discuss: Corin's early creative upbringing and DIY beginnings in practical FX Transitioning from shorts and music videos into feature filmmaking The making and impact of his debut feature The Hallow How he landed the directing role on The Nun Working within major studio franchises vs independent filmmaking His newest feature Whistle and what audiences can expect Crafting visual storytelling through storyboarding ...and so much more! A must-listen episode for directors, horror fans, and anyone interested in the intersection of visual design, genre storytelling, and career progression in the film industry. Love is very much in the air on the Empire Podcast this week, as Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Becky Darke cram themselves into the podbooth and get all misty-eyed over Jason Voorhees, the masked maniac from the Friday The 13th movies, just in time for his birthday. But Valentine's Day also looms large this weekend, so the podteam answer a listener question about the worst choices made in rom-coms. The answers will shock you. Elsewhere, our intrepid quartet discuss the week's movie news, including the shock news that Mike Flanagan has decided to adapt a Stephen King story, and review Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights, Bart Layton's Crime 101, Corin Hardy's Whistle, and Hasan Hadi's The President's Cake. And Helen sits down on Zoom with Emerald Fennell to ask her all about her adaptation of the classic novel. [45:29 - 1:02:11 approx] Enjoy!

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by film-maker and director CORIN HARDY!Corin's new film 'Whistle' aptly drops on Friday 13th, which will surely be on the radar of the horror heads among you but if not, it might form part of your forthcoming movie schedule after listening to this one... Corin's served many years in the game, from time spent in set design and then onto stop motion, which led onto over 50 music videos which further led to working in a more cinematic capacity. It's been a hugely creative path, all underpinned by music which also forms a huge link in the chain (as you'll hear from the mutual interest in Operation Ivy and Rancid), and as with all Distraction Pieces the chat reins are loosened and conversation wanders into all sorts of awesome ground. Crucially though - you'll hear a ton about Whistle (without hearing the whistle itself - thankfully? - which is present throughout the chat), and the process of bringing it to the screen.
