For Deborah Locke, joining the NSW Police was a ticket to a better life. After joining the police in 1984, Deborah found herself in the seedy underbelly of police corruption. Bribery, drinking, and sexual harassment were commonplace - until Deborah decided she had to stand up for what was right, even if it cost her everything. The Wood Royal Commission was a turning point in Australian policing. This is the story of how it came to be.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Whistling as they fly, Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks are gorgeous waterfowl with bright pink bills and legs, chestnut necks and backs, and black underparts. Though most whistling-ducks live in the tropics, Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks are found in the U.S. along the western Gulf Coast and Florida. But they're expanding their range and have been spotted nesting as far north as Wisconsin.Support comes from Wild Delight Bird Food, offering a variety of blends designed to mimic the natural resources wild birds crave, available at Chewy.com.¡Escuche este episodio en BirdNote en Español!More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? It's News Day Tuesday on the Majority Report On today's program: Former ICE lawyer-turned-whistleblower Ryan Schwank testified at a hearing held by congressional Democrats, detailing how he received secret orders to train ICE recruits to violate the Constitution. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) tweets picture of cartel members wearing masks and captions with "cartel hitmen wear masks. Leftists aren't complaining". Democratic senators dunk on Lee's post by pointing out the hypocrisy of ICE agents wearing masks. Alexander Avina, historian and associate professor at Arizona State University joins the program to discuss the situation in Mexico after the killing of CJNG cartel leader, El Mencho. Tad Stoermer of Resistance History releases a video that critiques the Democrats bizarre choice of Colonial Williamsburg as the location for Gov. Spanberger's response to tonight's State of the Union address. In the Fun Half: Tucker Carlson presses Mike Huckabee on his claim that Israel has a "biblical right" to the land from the Euphrates to Nile. The leader of Israel's "opposition" party expresses the same beliefs as Huckabee regarding biblical deeds to the Middle East. Tucker also debates with Huckabee how much the Trump administration values the opinions of American's considering the overwhelming rejection of a potential war with Iran. Gavin Newsom - Governor of California and sleezy magician - says democrats need to be more "culturally normal". all that and more To connect and organize with your local ICE rapid response team visit ICERRT.com The Congress switchboard number is (202) 224-3121. Join me for another episode of the podcast, on this episode we talk to renowned director Corin Hardy (The Nun, The Hallow) about his newest movie Whistle. We talk all about writing and creative processes, inventing new and unique kills and scares, how it was designed an aztec death whistle from scratch.Beware if you haven't seen the movie there are some spoilers in this chat - among many other cool and interesting things! If you enjoyed this - Check out my other content HEREBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/class-horror-cast--4295531/support.
We kick things off with the star-studded drama Anniversary. This thriller (starring Diane Lane and Kyle Chandler) explores what happens when a family falls apart just as a mysterious new movement sweeps the country. It's tense, emotional, and it definitely made us think twice about our next family reunion!Fun Flix Fact: Despite the heavy on-screen drama, the cast spent their breaks having high-stakes board game tournaments on set. Apparently, Kyle Chandler is a formidable Monopoly player and kept the bank on lockdown between takes!Next, we're hitting the road for Crime 101, the gritty heist thriller that everyone's talking about. It's a high-octane game of cat-and-mouse between a brilliant jewel thief (Chris Hemsworth) and a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) along the Pacific Coast Highway.Fun Flix Fact: This film marks a massive on-screen reunion for Hemsworth and Ruffalo. To prepare for their rivalry, they avoided each other on set for the first few weeks of filming to keep their on-screen tension as authentic as possible! If you're a fan of a good fright, you'll love our review of Whistle. When a group of teenagers discovers an ancient, cursed whistle, they inadvertently summon an entity that hunts anyone who hears its call. It's "don't make a sound" taken to a terrifying new level.Fun Flix Fact: Director Corin Hardy is a legend when it comes to practical effects. He insisted that the "Creature" be played by a physical performer in a custom suit rather than using CGI, meaning the terrified reactions from the young cast are often very, very real! For this week's Anniversary Corner, we're hacking into the mainframe to celebrate 25 years of the slick, stylish Swordfish. Starring Halle Berry, John Travolta, and Hugh Jackman, it's the ultimate early-2000s tech-thriller.Fun Flix Fact: The film's incredible opening explosion was filmed using a "bullet-time" rig featuring 135 different cameras. At the time, it was one of the most expensive and complex practical stunts ever choreographed for a film! And if that's not enough entertainment for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. Love is very much in the air on the Empire Podcast this week, as Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Becky Darke cram themselves into the podbooth and get all misty-eyed over Jason Voorhees, the masked maniac from the Friday The 13th movies, just in time for his birthday. But Valentine's Day also looms large this weekend, so the podteam answer a listener question about the worst choices made in rom-coms. The answers will shock you. Elsewhere, our intrepid quartet discuss the week's movie news, including the shock news that Mike Flanagan has decided to adapt a Stephen King story, and review Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights, Bart Layton's Crime 101, Corin Hardy's Whistle, and Hasan Hadi's The President's Cake. And Helen sits down on Zoom with Emerald Fennell to ask her all about her adaptation of the classic novel. [45:29 - 1:02:11 approx] Enjoy!

Test rugby is back on the menu - and so is Whistle Watch.Former international referee Nigel Owens and the 94-capped Welsh midfielder Jamie Roberts settle in to discuss all the curious and contentious refereeing decisions from across the opening round of the 2026 Six Nations Championship.Did England prop Ellis Genge deserve more than just a penalty for some foul play at Twickenham? Is it possible to penalised twice for one action? And Nigel and Jamie look at the one-two punch punishment handed out to Taine Plumtree's Wales. Whistle Watch is in partnership with Emirates. Some exciting news—The Take is now on Patreon: www.patreon.com/kermodeandmayo. Become a Vanguardista or an Ultra Vanguardista to get video episodes of Take Two every week, plus member‑only chat rooms, polls and submissions to influence the show, behind‑the‑scenes photos and videos, the monthly Redactor's Roundup newsletter, and access to a new fortnightly LIVE show—a raucous, unfiltered lunchtime special with the Good Doctors, new features, and live chat so you can heckle, vote, and have your questions read out in real time. Bodices will be ripped in this week's Take, because we're talking Wuthering Heights. Emerald Fennell heads to the wild and windy moors for a cinematic storm of obsession, repression, lots of rain and, well… let's just say nobody's getting this worked up about the weather alone. Controversially starring Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff and Margot Robbie as Catherine, it's already dividing the critics, so where does Mark stand? The lascivious literary adaptation's director is our guest this week. She joins Simon to talk about the story's sensuality, toxicity, and how much glaring, breathing, and storm-lashed longing is too much glaring, breathing, and storm-lashed longing? She tells us how it felt to realise her teenage dream of bringing her vision for this classic to the screen, and why its tale of love, revenge, and emotional chaos still gets pulses racing. Plus reviews of three more of the week's cinematic offerings. There's Crime 101, Bart Layton's sleek thriller pairing Chris Hemsworth's precision jewel thief with Mark Ruffalo's relentlessly pursuing detective, and proving once again that nobody in LA should ever relax. Whistle brings supernatural horror and the world's worst extracurricular activity, as students discover that cursed ancient Aztec artefacts are best left well alone. And Little Amélie offers something altogether gentler — an animated adaptation of Amélie Nothomb's autobiographical story of childhood, identity, and wonder. All this, plus the box office top 10, a trip to the dizziest heights of humour in the Laughter Lift, and the customary digressions and delights of another top Take. 00:00:00 Show starts 00:08:53 Crime 101 review 00:18:33 Box Office Top 10 00:32:14 Emerald Fennell interview 00:46:27 Wuthering Heights review 01:00:06 Laughter Lift 01:03:11 Little Amelie review 01:08:49 Whistle review You can contact the show by emailing correspondence@kermodeandmayo.com or you can find us on social media, @KermodeandMayo Please take our survey and help shape the future of our show: https://www.kermodeandmayo.com/survey EXCLUSIVE NordVPN Deal ➼ https://nordvpn.com/take Try it risk-free now with a 30-day money-back guarantee! Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by film-maker and director CORIN HARDY!Corin's new film 'Whistle' aptly drops on Friday 13th, which will surely be on the radar of the horror heads among you but if not, it might form part of your forthcoming movie schedule after listening to this one... Corin's served many years in the game, from time spent in set design and then onto stop motion, which led onto over 50 music videos which further led to working in a more cinematic capacity. It's been a hugely creative path, all underpinned by music which also forms a huge link in the chain (as you'll hear from the mutual interest in Operation Ivy and Rancid), and as with all Distraction Pieces the chat reins are loosened and conversation wanders into all sorts of awesome ground. Crucially though - you'll hear a ton about Whistle (without hearing the whistle itself - thankfully? - which is present throughout the chat), and the process of bringing it to the screen. Send us a textThe scoreboard shouldn't be the hardest opponent on the court—yet pickleball has a way of turning a casual match into a rules seminar. We kick off with paddles, kitchens, and that infamous third number in the score, then pull back to what really separates beginners from lifers: understanding ball types, court surfaces, and why finesse beats force. If you've ever argued about whether you can step into the kitchen or which ball “skids” on vinyl, you'll feel right at home here. From there, we chase the thrill of performance wherever it lives. Winter sports remind us that gear and risk change the game—suits, edges, airflow, and the kind of courage you can't fake at the top of a jump. We trade film recs for your queue—gritty ambition in I, Tonya, a chilling hook in Whistle, the surprise of Solo Mio, and a crime comfort watch with Parker—because stories hit the same nerve as sport: the rules, the pressure, and the moment you either nail it or eat it.The conversation turns personal when we ask what success owes family. Headlines love the feud, but we look for a healthier model: help with structure. Think trusts over handouts, payroll for real roles, and financial literacy that protects relationships. It's the same lesson as the kitchen line—you need boundaries to keep play fair. Along the way, expect sharp takes on the Super Bowl, a nod to new Hall of Famers, and halftime chatter without the fluff. If you come for the pickleball tips, stay for the honesty. Hit play, share it with a friend who argues about scoring, and drop a review with your best house rule—or the movie that surprised you most.
