Join Amy and Mark as they break down this chilling case: Was payback the motive for the murder of a detective's 7-year-old son? On January 12, 1984, young Gary Grant Jr. enjoyed a rare midweek holiday in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He lived with his mother, May, after his parents’ separation. That morning, Gary mentioned having a secret appointment later in the day, but when he failed to return home by 4:00 PM, his mother grew worried. Despite his father’s frantic search, Gary’s body was discovered two days later in a vacant lot, just two blocks from home. He had been beaten to death with a heavy pipe, likely the murder weapon, found nearby. The initial investigation focused on Carl Mason, nicknamed “Boo,” a 12-year-old with a low IQ who was close friends with Gary. After hours of questioning, Boo signed a confession, though he continued to insist on his innocence. Despite his confession being ruled inadmissible and Boo being cleared of charges, no other suspect was ever identified. Two years later, the case took a sinister turn when a cryptic message appeared on the side of an Atlantic City patrol car: “Gary Grant's dead. I am living. Another will die on January 12th if all goes right.” This message, found just days before the second anniversary of Gary’s murder, suggested a connection to the crime. Weeks later, another chilling message was scratched into a sidewalk: “Gary Grant Jr. lives. I still killed him. Son of a pig officer. Payback is a M.F.” These messages led to speculation that Gary's murder was an act of retribution for an arrest made by his father, but the case remains unsolved. Gary’s family continues to hope for justice, longing for the day when the person responsible will be brought to account. Join Amy and Mark as they delve deeper into this haunting case, exploring the theories and uncovering the details that still leave so many questions unanswered. During the holiday season of 1981, Rhonda Hinson, a recent high school graduate and clerical worker, attended her first company Christmas party. After leaving the party around midnight, Rhonda began her 10-mile drive home. At 1:00 AM, her mother, Judy Hinson, awoke with a premonition that something terrible had happened to her daughter. Rhonda’s car was found just half a mile from her home, with the driver’s door open and Rhonda lying dead nearby. She had been killed by a single bullet from a high-powered rifle, which had penetrated her car and struck her heart. Initially considered a random act of violence, the investigation later suggested that Rhonda may have been targeted by someone she knew. In the weeks leading up to her death, Rhonda exhibited uncharacteristic behavior, such as asking her father to accompany her on trips and expressing concerns about dating a married man. Witnesses reported seeing suspicious activity on the night of her murder, including a blue Chevrolet with two white males and a dark blue Trans-Am near the crime scene. One witness, under hypnosis, recalled more details about the vehicles and a potential suspect. Despite the passage of time, Rhonda’s mother maintains her room exactly as it was, cherishing memories of her daughter. A $20,000 reward is still being offered for information leading to the resolution of the case. Mark and Amy break down the Unsolved Mysteries segment and dive into the entire story. On October 13, 1982, in Morro Bay, California, the decomposed body of 43-year-old Dian Harlin was found in a stand of trees next to a beach, strangled with a leash belonging to one of her dogs. Her eccentric 47-year-old husband, Hugh Harlin, had failed to report her missing for eleven days, and given the couple’s turbulent relationship, Hugh became a potential suspect. Four years later, Hugh vanished without a trace, with his abandoned pick-up truck found by the side of the highway. Investigators were unable to determine if Hugh's disappearance was connected to Dian's murder, and both cases remain unsolved. On May 3, 1992, in Polk County, Florida, after attending a rodeo, 31-year-old Larry Costine and his 26-year-old girlfriend, Melissa Jo Sermons, returned to Larry's mobile home. Larry’s nude body was later discovered inside the trailer, having been shot four times, while Jo had gone missing. Initially, investigators suspected Jo had killed Larry and fled, but two decades later, law enforcement announced they believed Jo was also a victim, murdered by the same person who shot Larry. Despite Jo's ex-boyfriend being the prime suspect, there was insufficient evidence to charge him, and Jo was never found. Dick Hansen and his friend Jean were hanging out together before chatting in his car at the end of the night. A car pulled up and parked behind them on a street where only their two cars remained. As they left, Jean followed Dick as she wasn't familiar with the area, soon getting the idea they were being following by the other car. Darting across a highway and trying desperately to lose their stalker, Jean and Dick exited the highway and parked their cars, behind which the car rolled up and parked behind them. Dick went to confront the man who mortally wounded him. Jean ran back to help Dick and barely caught a glimpse of the shooter as the car sped away. To this day, the murder has not been solved. Jean thinks, due to the man's football-like build and her license plate reading “49R HUGS”, the killer may have been a fanatic of a rival team, though the ball still hasn't been caught on Dick's killer. 19 year old Tara Leigh Calico (born February 28, 1969) is an American woman who disappeared near her home in Belen, New Mexico, on September 20, 1988. She is widely believed to have been kidnapped. In July 1989, a Polaroid photo of an unidentified young woman and boy, gagged and seemingly bound, was televised to the public after it was found in a convenience store parking lot in Port St. Joe, Florida. Family friends thought the woman resembled Calico and contacted her mother, who then met with investigators and examined the Polaroid. She believed it was her daughter after taking "time, growth and lack of makeup" into consideration, and noted that a scar on the woman's leg was identical to one that Calico had. Scotland Yard analyzed the photo and concluded that the woman was Calico, but a second analysis by the Los Alamos National Laboratory disagreed. An FBI analysis of the photo was inconclusive. His home is in complete disarray, and his gun collection is missing. Upon further inspection of Todd's truck, the keys are still in the ignition, last night's groceries still lying there, and Todd's glasses are in the bed of the truck…covered in blood. A few miles away, a truckload of Todd's employees are at a drainage ditch, looking for water for their overheated truck. There, they find Todd McAfee lying in the drainage ditch. He was shot 4 times. In 1996, Blair Adams began acting strangely. A construction foreman in Surrey, British Columbia who has always been known for his clear-minded levelheadedness, he was suddenly paranoid. Convinced he was being hunted down and soon to be murdered, he tried unrelentingly to cross the border into the United States. After being refused entry twice, he finally was able to make it across the Canadian border into the United States. His behavior increasingly erratic, he quickly made his way to Knoxville, TN, all the while, his mental state deteriorating. Six days after his journey began, he was found dead in a parking lot half-naked and beaten. With virtually no clues to lead investigators to what caused Blair's tragic demise, the investigation came to a screeching halt. Still an open case, cold case investigators are still striving for any clue that would create leads for them to follow. Join Mark & Amy (in her first UMR episode) as they take a deep dive into the tragic, mysterious death of Blair Adams. In 1981, Su Young and Su-Ya Kim were married and soon moved to the United States from Korea. By 1991, they both lived in New York with their two sons and owned two successful stores. However, their happy life was ruined on June 29. Su-Ya dropped her two sons off at their grandmother’s house and went shopping. When her husband came home later, she had not returned, and he later found her car parked in their parking garage with the engine stone cold. The next day, police identified the remains of a young woman has Su Ya’s. She had been murdered by nine stab wounds from a unknown man; her remains coldly dumped in a trash dumpster. Police determined that she had been the victim of random violence, but were able to find a witness. Before her body was found, a security guard witnessed an unidentified man early in the morning acting strangely around the garbage can that was later found to have contained Su Ya’s remains. The man soon left and the security guard began looking through the garbage and found her body. He hailed a passing ambulance, but Su-Ya had been dead for several hours. The security guard gave a description of the man and the license plate, which was later found to belong to a Taiwanese college student who had nothing to do with the case. Police began looking at the security guard as a suspect, until a lie detector test proved he had nothing to do with the murder either. The police are now looking for leads in her murder. For nearly two years, husband Su-Young Kim stayed in the United States, but the memories of his wife proved too painful to bear. In April of 1993, he shut down his business and returned with his two little boys to South Korea, his wife’s killer’s identity still a mystery. Suspects: The unidentified person seen by the security guard was a white man wearing round glasses. He may have worked in or lived around the area that the garbage can was located. He has never been identified. Join Dr. Lindsay Weisner and Mark Jeacoma as we look back at this tragic case which took place in 1980’s around Long Island!
