POPULARITY
Between 1946 and 1953, at a Massachusetts institution called the Walter E. Fernald State School, dozens of boys were recruited into something called a “Science Club.” They were promised special perks — better food, baseball games, trips to the beach. What they weren't told was that their breakfast oatmeal and milk were secretly laced with radioactive iron and calcium. The so-called nutritional study was designed by scientists from MIT, funded in part by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, and co-sponsored by Quaker Oats, which supplied the cereal. The goal was to measure how well the body absorbed minerals from food — but the method violated every basic rule of ethics and consent. The children, many labeled “feebleminded” or “morons” by the state, were wards of Massachusetts — boys without parents, without rights, and without the ability to refuse. Some were even injected with radioactive materials in follow-up experiments. None were told what was happening to them. When the truth came out decades later, public outrage was immediate. Survivors like Fred Boyce came forward, saying the greatest harm wasn't the radiation — it was being treated like an object, not a person. In 1998, MIT and Quaker Oats settled a class-action lawsuit for $1.85 million, and President Bill Clinton issued an apology on behalf of the federal government for Cold War-era human radiation testing. But behind the headlines is a bigger story — about power, secrecy, and the belief that science justifies anything. In this episode, we dig deep into the Fernald radioactive oatmeal experiments — what really happened, who was responsible, what became of the victims, and how it changed human-subject research forever. On this episode of Groove with Portia, I'm joined by grief recovery mentor, photographer, and author Helen Fernald, whose book Love, Helen: Letters to My Mother came from years of pouring her heart onto the page. After losing her mother, father, and experiencing two miscarriages, Helen turned to writing as a way to release what couldn't be said out loud. And through that process, she found her voice—and her healing. We dive deep into how creativity can be a lifeline through grief. Helen shares what it was like to cry while writing, wrestle with anger, and find peace in remembering. We also talk about the pressure to hide our pain, especially as women, and the importance of making space for real emotion—without shame. This conversation is an invitation to be honest with yourself about where you are in your grief and to trust that expression—whether through tears, writing, or silence—is powerful. Grief isn't the enemy.Sometimes, it's the teacher.Connect with Helen: https://helenfernald.com/
"Buitenhof was fijn," zegt Fernald.

Love, Helen: Letters to My Mother: Creating a Loving Connection after Loss by Helen FernaldDear Reader, This is the story of my journey while slowly cleaning out the closet of my heart following the death of my beloved mother. I wasn't prepared to lose her. I did the only thing I knew how to do. I kept busy, swallowing every feeling. Then I ended up in the hospital and was forced to stop. While recovering, I began to write these letters. My heart broke wide open; the flood of blocked emotions poured out. Finally, I was able to accept my mother's death. It's my deepest hope these letters will bring you, too, a sense of peace. Love, Helen.Helen Fernald is a grief recovery author who teaches the art of therapeutic letter writing to help loved ones create peace and a renewed connection after loss. Ms. Fernald's mother died suddenly when Helen was only forty. Heartbroken and not knowing how to grieve, Helen kept very busy for five years and then ended up in the hospital. While recovering, she began to write letters to her mother, which helped her create a new loving connection as well as lasting peace and renewed joy. Helen's book, Love, Helen--Letters to my Mother is now available online and in bookstores. https://www.amazon.com/Love-Helen-Letters-Creating-Connection/dp/B0DJNF31BHhttps://helenfernald.comhttps://mainspringbooks.com/ https://www.facebook.com/helen.fernald.7/http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/13025hfmsb.mp3

I'm your host Cindy MacMillan and I'm joined today by Helen Fernald. Each week I interview spiritual explorers, amazing coaches, and authors from all walks of life about beginnings, endings and the messy bits in between because I believe every season is a beautiful opportunity for transformation. In this episode of the podcast, we are chatting with Helen Fernald about 5 tangible steps someone can take to finally befriend their grief and her book LOVE, HELEN--Letters to My Mother: Creating a Loving Connection After Loss. I am delighted to introduce my guest. Helen Fernald is a grief recovery expert and author of the forthcoming book LOVE, HELEN--Letters to My Mother: Creating a Loving Connection After Loss. She specializes in teaching therapeutic letter writing. All right, Helen, thank you very much for being with us. Here's a glimpse of our conversation: 3:21 But then when I really started to think about was how my book is actually about exploring the seasons of life. And I think unlike a linear timeline, my book is about exploring the seasons of the heart. So, it's how all those emotions, the joy, the sadness, everything gets all mixed together. And I think that's the beauty of life. And that's the beauty of the seasons of life. 7:13 I've reflected on this question a lot over my life, because I've had so many sudden losses in my life of the people that I really loved and I come from a family where we didn't deal with grief, we didn't deal with emotions. And I don't think I'm the only family from the only family that did that. 7:55 The first thing that I would recommend to people is that you just acknowledge your grief. I think that's the first step, acknowledging it. And then also giving yourself permission to feel it to actually grieve. I know that that can be so hard because I realized, after a number of years of not dealing with the grief around my mother, there was a part of me that was so afraid, I would never be able to stop crying that I didn't want to start cry. 8:37 The second step is absolutely to find someone to talk with. I personally would suggest a therapist, someone who really specializes in this, it could be a therapist, a doctor, a coach, there are grief groups I know. And even in our small town, we have a grief group. It could be a pastor, I first turned to my pastor, and then he connected with me with a therapist, and it was just so extraordinarily helpful. 9:24 Step number three is to find some sort of practice, some sort of practice where we can just learn to take a breath and be still. I think that we can't really turn into our grief until we can slow down enough to acknowledge it and to be able to talk about it. 14:38 The first thing I think for writing letters, is that it needs to be something that you want to do. It shouldn't be something that you feel oh my god, I have to sit down and write a letter, I have to do all this other stuff and I've got to have a letter, it should be something that you want to do. 16:57 This was the first letter that I wrote to my mother, my mother just to give you a little timeframe my mother died in July of 1992. And I did not start writing letters until 2008. So, this was my first letter and I entitled it Letters Through the Veil because I feel like for me from a spiritual sense our loved ones are always around us, but we just simply can't see them. 23:12 I also just wanted to mention that I never knew when, when this book would end, I had no idea I just kept writing and writing and the letters all sort of ended the same way. They all ended in with perhaps the exception of this one. They all were about Mom, please stay by my side, I still need you. 31:27 I think that it's when we actually stop and explore the seasons of our life. I think that there are miraculous things that can happen. Amazing things. And, and it's okay to be vulnerable. It's okay to be honest. We are who we are. And we are all gifts to the world. We are all lights to the world. And I think that those are, I know that's a little more than what you asked. But that's what that's that would be for me the biggest takeaway. You can find Helen Fernald at: Website Instagram That brings us to the end of this episode! Thank you Helen for joining us and as always, thanks for listening to Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast.

For years, the state of Massachusetts was charged with the care of children with disabilities at The Walter E. Fernald State School in Waltham. But those children were often neglected. Now, family members of the children who lived there are looking to learn more about what happened to their loved ones and hitting dead ends. GBH's Jennifer Moore investigates.

David Bocks worked at the Fernald Feed Materials Production Center in Fernald, Ohio. One day in June 1984, David disappeared in the middle of his shift. Hours later, a bone fragment was found in a furnace at the plant. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the disappearance of David Bocks. Thirty-nine years later, no one knows if, how, or why David ended up in the furnace, but some believe he was killed because he knew company secrets. The company processed uranium, much of which was reportedly escaping from the plant into the air. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! What is the campus's status and buildings today, and what does the future hold? The Walter E. Fernald Developmental Center has a very dark past. A past shaded with sinister and unethical experimentation on developmentally disabled children. From eugenics to feeding children cereals laced with radioactive isotopes. Life inside the Fernald was not one of rehabilitation or care that it should have been. Today, the campus is abandoned, a quiet and lonely reminder of a time many would rather forget. But do the dark shadows of the past still linger in the halls of countless buildings that slowly rot away on this seemingly cursed plot of land? “Where there is love, miracles occur naturally. Miracles are your inheritance in any given moment. A miracle is available to you when your heart is open. A Course in Miracles says you have a grievance or you can have a miracle – you cannot have both.” ~ Marianne Williamson Guest Introduction: Welcome to another episode of Exploring the Seasons of Life, a podcast for women with a big heart on a spiritual journey. Today we will talk about a dark secret that has finally come to light. What happened at the Fernald State School?
Shane Fernald is a hooper, so I had to have him on the Shoot Hoops Podcast. He eats, sleeps, and breathes the game. In this episode, we talk about his basketball journey, which includes times playing with star players like Mikey Williams, Caleb Foster, Jaden Bradley, and more. We spend most of our time talking about the NCAA; we attempt to change the negative stigma around D3 hoops, discuss the pros and cons of the transfer portal, and debate the trash-talk saga between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. We give our takes on 2023 NBA MVP and 1st Round matchups of the NBA Playoffs.
The Fernald School is a dark stain on the history of Massachusetts, a school originally intended to teach physically and intellectually disabled children real-life skills that eventually turned into an experiment in eugenics. Many people speculate as to what exactly happened within those walls, but what we do know is that throughout the mid 20th century, radiation was tested on children.
Ariel has an impressive film resume. She is President and Executive Producer at Eastern Sky Theatre Company, which she co-founded with her husband Trey. This episode's guest, Clay Fernald (AKA Clay N Ferno), was voted the Most Popular Man in Boston back in 2005, thanks to MySpace (those were the days, huh?) In those days, Clay did marketing and promo for The Middle East, one of Boston's most legendary concert venues (I've maybe seen 100 shows there). These days, Clay does his own thing: he's an independent contractor, he hosts a podcast, has a Substack, and he talks about all of that during our conversation. It covers workaholism and grind culture, and knowing when to take a break! Clay also talks through his journey to sobriety, and how it's affected his relationships with family, with friends and with himself. Follow Clay at claynferno on Twitter and Instagram.

The radioactive cloud of smoke out of the Fernald, Ohio nuclear plant NLO was not the only scandal to happen, but the disappearance and death of pipe fitter Dave Bocks has been questionable since 1984. We look at the allegations made by friends and family and talk about the thoughts. Though the case has not been declared a homicide, there is enough questionable activity to generate an Unsolved Mysteries episode and still leaves friends and family asking questions today. We look at whistleblowing and what could have happened that night in 1984, but also what happened in the United States before the Chernobyl incident regarding nuclear power and mistakes happening on this side of the ocean.

Selective mutism is a topic that I know many SLPs have lots of questions about, and I haven't had the right answers. Luckily, in this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I have special guest Joleen Fernald on to talk about everything you need to know about selective mutism. Joleen R. Fernald, Ph.D., CCC-SLP was awarded Board Specialty Recognition in Child Language from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Dr. Fernald follows Greenspan and Wieder's model, DIRFloortime®, when working with children and families. She has a special interest in the social-emotional development of young children and its impact on their speech and language skills. As a speech-language pathologist, Dr. Fernald works with children who have a variety of communication disorders. Since selective mutism is an anxiety-based disorder, it can be confusing for SLPs to understand our role in helping students, but it's important to remember that this affects their social communication and we are the experts in that. Tune in to learn more about what selective mutism is, what causes it, and how we can best support and help our students with this condition. SCSU Women's Swimming & Diving seniors Morgan Fernald and Bailey Shaffer are featured on the 20th episode of Owl or Nothing. The two discuss their path to arriving at Southern Connecticut and their favorite Tim Quill moments.
June 19, 1984. Fernald, Ohio. 39-year old Dave Bocks shows up to work the graveyard shift at the Fernald Feed Materials Production Center, a plant which processes uranium for nuclear weapons. Dave vanishes before his shift ends and evidence soon emerges that he fell into some molten liquid inside one of the plant's furnaces. The authorities initially suspect that Dave could have committed suicide and find no evidence of foul play, but months later, the plant is implicated in a major scandal involving radioactive contamination, leading to speculation that Dave was murdered for threatening to blow the whistle on unsafe practices at his workplace. Did Dave Bocks jump or accidentally fall to his death inside a 1,300-degree furnace? Or did someone kill him and intentionally place his body in there? This week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold” chronicles the controversial story of a plant which endangered a farming community and the unexplained death of one of its workers.
