It was Christmastime — a season of peace, light, and goodwill — which made the slow unraveling of their minds all the more disturbing.IN THIS EPISODE: Despite being in the middle of the first World War, on Christmas Day, 1914 British and German soldiers sang carols together, exchanged gifts with the enemy combatants, and supposedly even played a soccer game against each other in order to celebrate the holiday. (The Great War's Christmas Truce) *** The case was so mysterious it was even featured on TV's “Unsolved Mysteries” and “America's Most Wanted”: who committed the Christmas murder of Latricia White? And what happened to Lee and Chance Wackerhagen? (An Unsolved Christmas Murder Mystery) *** We're so used to seeing old St. Nick showing up with a big bag of toys for the kiddies – but what if he arrived with another bag full of switches for your parents to use the whole year through if you were on his naughty list? We'll look back at when Santa wasn't purely jolly and jovial, and when he arrived to dole out both presents and punishment! (Santa's Naughty List) *** The Los Feliz murder mansion became the site of a horrifying and sad Christmas tragedy for one California family. (Christmas At The Los Feliz Murder Mansion) *** A haunting holiday mystery took place in England in 1916 when a young bride simply disappeared without a trace. (The Vanishing Christmas Bride) *** A man tries to take on supernatural forces – and ends up as an undead creature who appears as a terrifying Yuletide spirit. The Tallman House looked like the perfect Midwest dream — quiet street, fresh start, growing family. But everything shifted the day they brought home a secondhand bunk bed. Within nights, the bedroom filled with whispers, chanting, cold spots, and a ghost that knew their names. Then came a terrifying escalation: a woman standing in flames at the foot of the bed. Both children saw her. Neither had told the other she existed. Soon the bunk bed shook on its own, objects flew through the air, and a mist hovered in the corner each night, inching closer until it finally whispered to Allen: “You're dead.” Watch the missing Unsolved Mysteries segment filmed inside the Tallman House here. I’m absolutely thrilled to have my amazing co-host from Love, Lies and Alibis, Hannah, joining me for this chilling dive into one of the most haunting cases from the classic Unsolved Mysteries series. Check out our other podcast here https://www.loveliesandalibis.com Be warned that it is a little darker than the stuff on this podcast In June 1988, 23-year-old Philip Innes Fraser—a bright, adventurous young man from Anchorage, Alaska, and the son of two prominent doctors—set out on a solo road trip south to start pre-med studies at Evergreen State College in Washington. Driving his packed black 1983 VW Jetta, Philip was full of promise. After surrendering his handguns at the Canadian border, he stopped at a remote café in the Yukon. That’s where everything went tragically wrong. unsolved.com unsolved.com At the Forty Mile Flats Café, witnesses saw Philip reluctantly pick up a nervous, clean-cut hitchhiker in his early 20s. It was an act of kindness on a lonely highway that would cost him his life. Hours later, that same hitchhiker was spotted driving Philip’s Jetta alone—boldly impersonating him. He shared intimate details of Philip’s life, family, and plans with strangers, even spending the night at a kind couple’s home while they fixed his car. Then, Philip’s burned-out Jetta was found abandoned in Prince George, British Columbia. reddit.com Weeks later, Philip’s body was discovered in a remote gravel pit—shot multiple times. The killer had vanished, taking Philip’s wallet, passport, and identity. substack.com The Unsettling Case of Philip Fraser: Killed by a Hitchhiker Featured on Unsolved Mysteries in 1992, this case of stolen identity and cold-blooded murder on Canada’s desolate highways still grips us today. Despite composites, leads, and speculation about serial killers, the hitchhiker has never been identified. Nearly 38 years later, Philip’s murder remains unsolved. Join Hannah and me as we rewind this heartbreaking mystery—who was the man who stole more than a ride? Hollywood says Krampus is an ancient Christmas demon with roots in pagan mythology — but there's no evidence any of that is true. The real story of how this monster came to be is stranger than any legend. #HolidayHorrorsIN THIS EPISODE: We're all familiar with the poem “A Visit From St. Nicholas” – better known as, “Twas The Night Before Christmas”. But while we know the poem, we can't be quite as sure about who wrote it. (The Christmas Poem That Started a Feud) *** One of the great (and now, sadly, lapsed) Christmas traditions is the telling of ghost stories. On one particular year, a British teenager took this pastime to a whole other level. He didn't read about a Christmas Eve haunting. He experienced one. (The Phantom Choir of St. Albans) *** The past few years have made Krampus, the Christmas devil, a star of the big screen. But have you noticed that every version of him is different than the others? This may of course be in part to creative license, but it might have just as much if not more to do with the fact that none of the filmmakers had any idea of just what Krampus truly is, what he is all about, and how terrifying he can be. (Krampus, The Christmas Monster) *** Disaster strikes a small Illinois town on Christmas Eve, stripping away all that was merry and bright for the families who lived there. “Jobo” — a big-boned, simple-minded man from Texas – bears a striking resemblance to the mysterious stone figures of Easter Island. When an archaeologist (and later his daughter) catch wind of this uncanny likeness, each sets off on their own journey to uncover what it might mean. 26 year old Terrence Woods disappeared on October 5th, 2018, during a TV production in rural Idaho. Terrence was part of a 12 person film crew shooting at the abandoned Penman Mine in the Clearwater National Forest. After speaking briefly with one of the crew members, Terrence reportedly jumped off a 15-foot drop and began running into the wilderness, and he was never seen again. The crew stated that earlier in the day, Terrence experienced an anxiety attack and was not himself leading up to his disappearance. His family, however, believes the crew is not telling the full truth and suspects that something more sinister may have happened.Contact us at: weeknightmysteries@gmail.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/weeknightmysteriesTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@weeknightmysteries

A doctor begins treating a woman who insists that a glowing, supernatural figure — the Shining Man — has been appearing to her. She claims this radiant entity warns her of danger and even predicts deaths. At first the doctor chalks it up to stress and hallucination… until he starts encountering disturbing coincidences that match her visions. The deeper he digs, the more he's pulled into a mystery that blurs the line between psychic prophecy and something genuinely otherworldly. Eventually he must confront whether “THE SHINING MAN” is a benevolent protector… or a harbinger of something far darker. | #RetroRadio EP0568CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate)…00:00:00.000 = Show Open00:01:30.028 = CBS Radio Mystery Theater, “The Shining Man” (March 15, 1977) ***WD00:45:03.622 = Tales of Tomorrow, “The Other Now” (January 22, 1953)01:14:57.930 = The Saint, “College Campus Threat” (April 01, 1951) ***WD01:44:17.155 = Theater Five, “Odds On Tower” (October 28, 1964)02:04:34.644 = Theater 1030, “The Sandman” (1968-1971) ***WD (LQ)02:31:34.724 = Two Thousand Plus, “The Giant Walks” (November 08, 1950) ***WD03:00:27.270 = The Unexpected, “Re-Match” (1947)03:15:16.763 = Unsolved Mysteries, “Indian Fakir” (February 17, 1944) ***WD03:28:54.434 = Columbia Workshop, “Carmilla” (July 28, 1940) (LQ)03:58:20.739 = Dark Venture, “The Man in 206” (December 02, 1946) ***WD04:27:41.133 = The Weird Circle, “Spectre Bride” (1944)04:55:07.840 = Show Close(ADU) = Air Date Unknown(LQ) = Low Quality***WD = Remastered, edited, or cleaned up by Weird Darkness to make the episode more listenable. Before convicts were shipped to Australia, they rotted aboard decommissioned warships anchored in the Thames — floating dungeons so brutal that a condemned man called them "a college of villainy" where every prisoner graduated "a master of arts in scoundrelism."IN THIS EPISODE: It was in 1975 when the first skull of what was believed to be Bigfoot was found. But the owner of the skull hadn't been dead too long, for the local people said they remembered the creature before it died. And even more shocking – they personally knew some of its descendants – a cross-breeding of Bigfoot and human beings! (Villagers Remember Descendants of Bigfoot) *** A young woman falls unconscious and awakes with a fantastical story about fairies kissing her, how she was treated like a princess by them, and falling in love with one of the fairy men. While you might say it was just a fanciful dream, how do you explain that this girl also woke up with clairvoyant abilities? (The Fairies and Anne Jeffries) *** On 15 July 1910 the Sheffield Evening Telegraph recorded the anniversaries of the day. One particular entry was this: “Prison hulks first seen on the Thames…1776”. But what were the prison hulks, and what was life like on board these ‘floating hells,' as they came to be known? (Floating Hells) ***Depending on whether or not you want to get the scare of your life, you will either want to, or not want to honk your car's horn three times on Burnt Mill Road in the Pine Barrens area of New Jersey. If you do, you risk an encounter with the Atco Ghost. (The Atco Ghost Legend of New Jersey) *** Archaeologists excavating the tomb of an ancient Egyptian queen just discovered something chilling… a 13-foot long scroll – a lost chapter from Egypt's “Book of the Dead”. A German occultist stole Bram Stoker's Dracula to make a film about pandemic fears, Stoker's widow ordered every copy burned, and yet Nosferatu survived to become the most influential vampire movie ever made.IN THIS EPISODE: The 1922 horror classic "Nosferatu" still turns up, on TV and on college campuses every Halloween. And it'll likely show up again somewhere this year as well. In this episode we'll look at how Nosferatu isterrifyingly relevant even still today, the controversial making of the film – and the lawsuit by Bram Stoker's wife, how the director of the film was involved in the occult… and how you would not have wanted to miss the film's premiere which was an unforgettable, epic event all by itself. That and a whole lot more about 1922's Nosferatu, on this episode of Weird Darkness. From Norse frost giants to the Bible's Goliath, tales of giants have haunted humanity for centuries — but in 2002, US soldiers in Afghanistan claim they encountered a 12-foot, six-fingered, blade-wielding giant that killed one of their own before they brought it down.IN THIS EPISODE: Did U.S. Special Forces really shoot dead a 12-foot-tall giant in Kandahar, Afghanistan? How much truth is behind the story – and how does fit into the age-old narrative of soldiers, knights, and heroes battling against and vanquishing giants and monstrous creatures? (The Giant of Kandahar) *** Soon after the Cranmer family moved in to their new home on Brownsville Road, it became clear that they were not alone. (The Demon of Brownsville Road) *** The Elephant's Foot was created after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 when reactor 4 exploded, releasing a lava-like mass of radioactive material called corium. So radioactive that it's still dangerous if you try and see it for yourself today. (The Elephant's Foot of Chernobyl) *** When something horrifying happens, it's natural to tell others about your experience. But what if, no matter how much you explain it, people simply don't believe you? We'll look at numerous stories from people who have true tales that they have a hard time getting even friends and family to take seriously. (Nobody Believes Me) *** When a great famine struck Europe in 1314, mothers abandoned their children and in some cases, even ate them. Scholars believe that these tragedies gave birth to the story of Hansel and Gretel. (The Grim True Story Behind Hansel and Gretel) *** Cultures all around the world have stories of tiny humans – elves, leprechauns, fairies, hobbits… but how can so many different communities have such similar descriptions of tiny people? Could there be evidence to prove the existence of tiny humanoids? (Little Human Subspecies) *** Traveling to the Superstition Mountains in search of the rumored treasure hidden there is not only a bad idea… it could be a fatal one. (Mysterious Visitors From Other Realms) *** Seeing an unidentified flying object in the sky is pretty common – even in cases where several people see the flying whatever-it-is at the same time. But when is the last time you and everyone around you looked up and saw an entire city flying in the sky? That's what happened in 2011 in the Nigerian village of Bauchi. (UFO City) *** But first… according to GPS, off the California coast there are dozens, possibly hundreds of ships moving around in circles. But the ships, while clearly visible on the GPS system, are nowhere to be seen by the human eye. Are these ghost ships from the past? The oceanic version of crop circles? Sailing ships from a different dimension? Or could it be something more disturbing, like a new type of cyber attack? We begin with that story. From a taxidermist who collected human eyes to a killer trying to fill every square on a chessboard with a victim, these twelve serial killers didn't just murder — they turned their crimes into something far more twisted and personal.IN THIS EPISODE: We have all been guilty of wishing we had more money coming in. Some people go out and get a second job. Others look at what they have to sell online, or look at what skills they have to offer to the public that they could charge money for. Or you can go the route of Georgia Tann – her entrepreneurial spirit brought her millions of dollars. And it was a simple idea. Steal other people's children, and then sell them! (How To Get Rich By Stealing and Selling Children) *** We'll look at some historic serial murderers and the strange and unusual ways they killed their victims. (Strange Predilections in Murder Methods) *** When it comes to planning the burial of someone, it's always best to to keep in mind that whomever is watching how you treat the deceased might be in charge of deciding what happens to you when you die. Sadly, one undertaker, Millard F. Rodgers, apparently forgot about the golden rule – and committed gruesome acts against families. “EXORCISM” by Ray Bradbury | When her mailman husband delivered a package of forbidden books to the woman up the street, Elmira Brown finally had proof of what she'd suspected all along — and she wasn't about to let a witch win another election.IN THIS EPISODE: The name Ray Bradbury immediately brings to mind such fictional tales – classics, many of them… some of which I've narrated here in the podcast such as “The Jar”, “Skeleton”, and “The Small Assassin.” But as good as Bradbury was at writing about the paranormal, he could also write comedy – and in tonight's story he combines the two. “Exorcism” is a fun short tale about a nosy housewife who suspects an older woman in town is studying to become a witch… and decides to confront the old lady to voice her disapproval. A nine-foot skeleton with a skull nearly a foot wide, 28 interlocking teeth, and three-toed clawed feet was discovered buried under a Japanese temple — and men risked their lives to bring it to America. Did they dig up the skeleton of a demon, or the Devil himself? (Read the deep-dive article on the Weird Darkness website:https://weirddarkness.com/satan-skull/)IN THIS EPISODE: “The Devil Is Dead Now, And Here Is His Skeleton!” That's the headline that ran in the Los Angeles Herald on October 6th, 1865. And this was no 19th century click-bait… they actually found real bones that fit the bill. (Satan's Skeleton) *** There are a number of tragic cases where people lose all memory of who they are, and, for whatever reason, no one is able to help them recover their identities. However, few such stories are as complicated and uncanny as the long, long search for the real “Charles Jamison.” (The Man Without a Past) *** Imagine suddenly, without warning, finding yourself in a completely different life. A different place to live, different friends and family. Nothing is the same. This is what happened to author Caroline Leavitt – but that's only half of her truly bizarre story! A skull found in a Mexican mine 90 years ago has features that no single known medical condition can fully explain. Doctors and scientists have studied this misshapen skull for decades, but no one can agree on what it actually is.IN THIS EPISODE: If you are into aliens or conspiracies, you've likely heard of the StarChild skull – a strange skull that appears either misshapen, or – as many believe – is the skull of a hybrid between extraterrestrials and human beings. What is the truth behind the StarChild? (What Is The StarChild?) *** In the 1700s life-saving techniques were obviously not as advanced as those we have today. Case in point – one doctor wanted to know if and how a drowned person might be brought back to life. The solution? Go to a hanging and try to revive the executed man. How do you think that went? (The Hanged Man) *** We've spoken often here on Weird Darkness about shadow people – what their purpose is, where they come from, whether they are malevolent or not… but are they ghosts, or something else entirely? (Are Shadow People Considered Ghosts?) *** A Reddit user shares his true story of hiking in the wilderness and suddenly being tracked and hunted over several days by a stranger with unknown intentions. (A Strange Man Hunted Me Through The Park) *** Within the walls of one of England's most picturesque castles, a queen gave birth to her only child and set in motion a chain of events that would become one of Tudor England's most intriguing mysteries. From an abandoned Alaskan town where residents fled a deadly "wild man" to the father who sold everything searching for his missing son in Olympic National Park, we explore the disturbing pattern of unexplained disappearances in North America's wildest places—and whether the legendary Bigfoot might know more than we think.IN THIS EPISODE: We explore the possible connection between unexplained disappearances and alleged Bigfoot encounters. We'll look at disturbing cases like the experienced park ranger who vanished in 1987, leaving behind only his belongings and mysterious journal entries, and the 12-year-old boy who somehow survived two freezing nights alone in the wilderness. What secrets lie hidden in shadowy forests of North America? Could there be something big and furry out there that could explain the vanishing of people into thin air? Three young brothers vanish from their father's backyard on Thanksgiving Day, a hijacker parachutes into the night with $200,000 and is never seen again, and a grandfather's ghost story leads to the discovery of a 200-year-old mass murder — these are just some of the chilling mysteries that have turned America's day of gratitude into something far more sinister. From unsolved killings and baffling disappearances to haunted hotels and tragic shipwrecks, this episode explores the dark side of Thanksgiving that most families never discuss at the dinner table.IN THIS EPISODE: While the rest of Americans are at home with their families, eating turkey and enjoying annual celebrations-- Thanksgiving has a darker side. We may often overlook this truth because it is rarely discussed at the Thanksgiving table. Every Thanksgiving Day there are some tragic and mysterious incidents. Many of these unfathomably awful things are never explained. Whether it is murders, gory accidents or strange vanishings during the night–these true-life unexplained mysteries and horrendous crimes might make excellent dinner-table conversation… assuming you're dining with other Weirdos like yourself. *** We'll talk about the year we had two Thanksgivings in the United States. (The Year With Two Thanksgivings) *** A Weirdo family member shares a freaky true Thanksgiving story with an explosive ending! (Thanksgiving Explosion) *** Two brothers solve an almost 200-year-old murder mystery thanks to a Thanksgiving ghost story that was told to them by their grandfather. (Grandpa's Thanksgiving Ghost Story) *** I'll share a horrific Thanksgiving tale from the latter part of the nineteenth century. (Feast of Terror) *** The Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego is one of the most beautiful hotels in the world – and some say the most haunted. (A Thanksgiving Ghost Story) *** On November 19, 1924, Hollywood movie producer Thomas Ince died after celebrating his 42nd birthday aboard a yacht belonging to infamous newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst, but to this day, the exact circumstances of his death remain a mystery. Could this be why his ghost still wanders the movie studio that he founded? *** On the night of November 20, 1901, a young North Carolina woman named Nell Cropsey vanished from her family's home in Elizabeth City. After a frantic search that lasted more than a month, Nell's body was discovered floating in a nearby river. She had been brutally murdered – but by who? *** On November 23, 1910, American-born homeopathic physician and salesman Hawley Harvey Crippen (usually known simply as Dr. Crippen in crime annals) was hanged at Pentonville Prison in London for the murder of his wife, Cora. But was he really a murderer? *** While the holidays are usually a time of cheer and happiness, the people of Chicago learned of a Christmas-related tragedy on November 22, 1912 when the famed "Christmas Tree Ship" went down in a storm on Lake Michigan. The tragedy changed the face of the holidays for the people of Chicago in a very unexpected way. ***Plus the original short horror story “Black Friday” by horror master, Jason R. Some creatures don't bring death — they just let you know it's coming.IN THIS EPISODE: Throughout history, we've assigned roles for harbingers of doom to various creatures and people. If a black cat crosses your path, it brings bad luck with it. If you see your own doppelganger, you're dangerously close to an untimely end. If the grim reaper makes an appearance, your time is up. And on and on it goes. In small towns in and around the United States and across the world, creatures lurking in the woods, sounds that can be heard at night, are all signs that something terrible is headed your way. These are what are known as “harbingers of doom” – and there are some horrifying events that have been linked to them over the years. (True Stories of Harbingers of Doom) *** The vast emptiness of Arizona can make the imagination do some crazy things – but then add to that an odd, abandoned set of domelike buildings, graffitied with “666”, where dead animals are found regularly, and the imagination might take you past crazy and into terrifying. (Arizona's Roadside Horror) *** Mary Harris waited outside the building where Adoniram Burroughs worked, and when he came out she pulled a gun and shot him at close range – killing him instantly. She then walked off, calmly, as if she had only tossed down and stepped on a used cigarette butt. But the public was on her side once her story was told. (The Case of Mary Harris) *** Weirdo family member Danny Ward tells the true story of what happened to him on a camping trip that turned terrifying. There might be good reason for that feeling. (Terrorized For Two Hours) *** In December 2014, a teenager in Economy, Pennsylvania called 911 and calmly said, “I found a head.” And thus began a mystery which is still unsolved. From Abraham Lincoln wandering the White House halls to a Reddit user's cat being dragged backward by an invisible hand, we're looking at haunted house claims both famous and personal—and asking whether any of them hold up to scrutiny.IN THIS EPISODE: For some people, living in a haunted house is a dream come true; for others it's a nightmare. Real haunted house stories are not as rare as one might think - and they are often so creepy, even skeptics can acknowledge that something strange is going on. As for anyone who can say they lived in a haunted house, the idea that ghosts or poltergeists are real is not all that hard to swallow. What if the Grey aliens abducting humans aren't exploring our world, but desperately parasitizing our species in a failed attempt to steal the one thing their advanced technology can never replicate—an immortal soul?IN THIS EPISODE: We've all been exposed to the concept of the grey aliens – made popular in numerous TV shows and films. From Steven Spielberg's “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, to TV's “Stargate SG-1” they are seen as harmless, even friendly. But then there are the darker stories such as the true account of the abduction of Barney and Betty Hill, or the film “Fire In The Sky” telling of the true kidnapping of Travis Walton into a strange spacecraft – with both stories telling of strange and terrifying experiments being done to the abductees by the grey humanoids. But could that latter category of stories be even more sinister? Could the Greys be, in fact, harvesting our humanity… and possibly even our souls? (The Parasitic Greys) *** Over the years, hundreds of people online have shared memories of a cheesy Nineties movie called “Shazaam”. There is no evidence that such a film was ever made. What does this tell us about the quirks of collective memory? (The Non-Existent Film The Internet Insists Is Real) *** While the Loch Ness Monster, or “Nessie” is a worldwide celebrity, she has a distant cousin in America that doesn't get the same kind of press – although she probably should. Have you heard of Lake Erie's “Bessie”?
