During World War One, a British soldier name Thomas Edward Lawrence or T.E. Lawrence found himself in his dream position, smack dab in the middle of Arabia helping to lead the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Turks. Lawrence of Arabia as he came to be known fought not only the Ottomans but also for the independence of the Arab people, even to the chagrin of his British superiors. He seemed at times fearless with his tactics for war, surprise attacking railways, crossing nearly impassable deserts to attack enemies where they least expected it. Join us for a lesson on this controversial historical figure.

Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton brought attention to this issue, and persuaded many people that women should vote. The first part of the United States to recognize women's right to vote was Wyoming,in the year 1869.During the following decades, many other states recognized women's right to vote, particularly in the western part of the country, where the women had a high social statues. However, the United States was not the first country to recognize the women's right to vote at the national level. The first country to recognize the women's right to vote was New Zealand,in 1893.Soon after,Australia also allowed women to vote, and so did the Scandinavia countries of northern Europe. But in countries such as the United States,Canada, and Great Britain, women could not yet vote.Women in those countries struggled to gain the vote. For example,in Great Britain,Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters participated in hunger strikes.During World War One(1914-1918),women's work efforts were very important to winning the war,and people's attitudes increasingly in favor of women having the right to vote.Women then gained the right to vote in Canada, the United States, and Great Britain.Gradually, other democracies around the world also recognized women's right to vote.Today,it is difficult to believed that women were not allowed to vote only a few generations ago.But there is still a progress to be made.In many countries, women are under-represented among political leaders.Perhaps the day will soon come when women are elected as often as men.
During World War One, Britain and its empire mobilised soldiers on a hitherto unprecedented scale. That required a huge logistical effort to feed, equip, house and train them. No place reflects these efforts better than Salisbury Plains. Now mainly sleepy villages and farmland, these plains were once home to tens of thousands of men and women who descended on the camps to prepare for war. In this episode historian Margaret McKenzie, who spent the last 30 years studying the camps, takes Dan on a tour of the site helping understand the scale of what once stood there. Margaret sadly passed away a few weeks ago, so this episode is dedicated to her and all those who served at the camps with which she became so familiar through her research. During World War One the 369th Infantry Regiment of the US Army gained a fearsome reputation. One of the most effective fighting units they spent more time in the frontline and suffered more casualties than any other American regiment. Given the nickname Men of Bronze by the French and the Hell-fighters by the Germans they were feared and respected in equal measure. The men of the 369th preferred, at the time, to be called the Black Rattlers and what set them apart from other units was that they were one of the first African-American regiments to serve with the American Expeditionary Forces. As African-Americans, these brave men were often denied the respect they deserved at home as America went through a period of intense racism and racial upheaval. In fact, it was only in August 2021 that the regiment was recognised for its extraordinary service when it was finally awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. Dan is joined by James Taub Public Program Specialist at The National WWI Museum and Memorial in Kansas to explore the history of the Harlem Hellfighters. They discuss the racism black soldiers experience in the US Army at the time, the experiences of the Hellfighters in Europe, their reputation as fearsome soldiers and the cultural impact they had in France. This poem is a great reminder of the brave sacrifices given in war for our freedom. During World War One, many Americans died for liberty and their final resting place is Flanders Fields.

During World War One, young men of all classes were encouraged to join up to the Armed Forces by various means. One such was the 'Recruiting Sergeant' who bought them beer and regaled them with great tales of valour. Another was the shaming force of peer pressure, the intimation that anyone who didn't sign up was ultimately a coward. Have we learned better since? I leave that to you...
