But we always got a product into the marketplace to see what people felt.7:00 - In every adventure I've done, it starts with curiosity, followed by research — but eventually, I just need to go and see it with my own eyes.8:22 - What's lucky about my stories is that memory fades, so the stories get better.11:18 - I realized I wasn't in Kansas anymore — this was the Galápagos. The battle starts in Gaza and ends with Allenby walking into the Jaffa Gate of Jerusalem. The story of the fateful campaign that brought British imperialism to Palestine (and Lebanon, and Syria…). We note that the British found Gaza to be a “fortress” from which it was impossible to dislodge the Turkish forces; Justin felt TE Lawrence was overrated, just another imperialist; and we compare admiration of the stoicism with which Allenby took news of his son's death, with an analogous situation today. https://podur.org/2024/05/13/world-war-civ-40-how-britain-took-palestine-in-1917/

We'll Always Have Aqaba - David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia Few films are able to live up to the label of "epic".  In 1962 David Lean created one of the great epic masterpieces of cinema, Lawrence of Arabia. Based on the life of British archaeologist, army officer, diplomat, and write, T.E. Lawrence, Lean's film chronicles Lawrence's involvement in the Arab Revolt (1916-1918), his life among his adopted tribal families and his struggles with loyalty to the Arab tribes, the dessert, and his ties to his British roots. Lean's film is an epic in every way; from beautiful 70mm cinematography (lensed by the great Freddie Young) majestic and engrossing music from Maurice Jarre, and the incredible editing of Anne V. Coates (all three Academy Award winners for the film). Introducing Peter O'Toole and Omar Shariff, Lean would help create two of the great international stars Cinema has known. It's a thrill for Mr. Chavez and I to sit down, watch, remember, and discuss this powerful, overwhelming, and life-changing film. Take a listen as we dig into the history of The Middle East, the reception and legacy of this film, and comparisons to other "White Saviour" stories. It's a damn good talk. We hope you'll enjoy. There is a strong argument to be made that the root of Palestinian identity can be traced back to the 1936-1939 Great Revolt, which united rival families and communities, melded urban with rural, and joined rich and poor together in a struggle against Zionism and the British Empire. This is the starting point in Oren Kessler's exquisitely detailed new book, "Palestine 1936: The Great Revolt and the Roots of the Middle East Conflict," which takes the reader inside the earliest days of Jewish migration from Europe during the interwar period, and raises numerous questions about the key events which continue to shape the modern Middle East conflict today. In this conversation with Robert Amsterdam, Kessler approaches the protagonists in this history with great care and empathy, and sheds light on the numerous complexities behind critical "what if" moments, from the Balfour Declaration and the White Paper of 1939. In light of the horrific October 7 attacks and the continuing conflict in Gaza, an interrogation of the historical roots of statehood in the region such as Kessler's book are a revelation and education.

The recent Substack post and episode of History Impossible about the significant three root historical causes of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict has largely been well-received. What I didn't expect is that one of the main sources I used for that episode would be willing to speak with me in greater depth about the massively underrated Arab Revolt of 1936-1939. In this episode, we're joined by the scholar, political analyst, and writer Oren Kessler, whose 2023 book Palestine 1936: The Great Revolt and the Roots of the Middle East Conflict should be included as required reading for anyone interested or invested in what has been topping the news since October 7th, 2023.Oren, like myself, is a believer in the notion that the Littlefinger of Palestine, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem Hajj Amin al-Husseini, is a figure of massively underrated importance. In this episode, we discuss the Arab Revolt through the eyes of the Mufti and examine just why he and his decisions and his legacy matter in the 21st century, despite him becoming largely forgotten except for his infamous photo op with the Fuhrer of Nazi Germany himself, Adolf Hitler. Oren makes the case that this is giving al-Husseini the short shrift with regards to his impact and we discuss why this should be both self-evident and required for understanding why things have gotten so bad between Israel and Gaza.Thank you and enjoy!History Impossible has been made possible by the following generous supporters on Patreon, Substack, and PayPal. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded October 28th and 29th, 2023 Having watched the incremental disintegration of Western Civilizations, such as it was, over the last forty and something years, it still comes as a surprise to witness the depravity, viciousness, and yes, banality of the evil now run rampant. And this is without regarding the unspeakable Israel - enacting a literal genocide even now, every moment - but the revelation of the West's moral bankruptcy Israel's ultimate crime illustrates. Certainly the blame for the killing of Gaza is on the governments and institutions of America, Europe, the NATO nations - Canada, the rest of the Anglo-American Alliance, and their satraps around the World - but the blood of innocents stains our hands too; we the people who allowed this happen, and allow it continue. So, now what are you and I and we to do? Dimitri Lascaris is a Montreal-based activist, journalist, and lawyer. He served as Justice Critic in the Shadow Cabinet of the Green Party of Canada and likewise for the Green Party of Quebec. Dimitri's interviews for TRNN are at TheRealNews.com. Dimitri's articles appear at various sites online and at his website, DimitriLascaris.org, where I found his latest piece, 'If We Have Any Honour, We Will Defend the Palestinian People'. Dimitri Lascaris in the first half. And; is there method in this madness? Was the ruthless destruction of decency and the foundational principles of the West, and presumably Israel, the intention of the current onslaught in Gaza, (and increasingly underscored by the marauding bands of murderous "settlers" in the West Bank)? Or has it all just gotten away from the perennial felon, prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, originally hoping perhaps just for a distraction from the determined - and massive - demonstrations against his government? Whither Israel then, and where does the disaster it has wrought for Palestine's people lead it now? John Helmer is a journalist and author who's spent decades living in and reporting from Russia. Principle behind the web news site, Dances with Bears, Helmer has too been a professor of political science, sociology, and journalism, and served as advisor to governments at the highest levels. Among his many book titles are: ‘Skripal in Prison,' ‘The Man Who Knows Too Much About Russia,' ‘The Jackals' Wedding: American Power, Arab Revolt', ‘The Lie That Shot Down MH-17', and his latest, ‘SOVCOMPLOT: How Pirates Tried to Capture the Treasure of the Russian Seas, and Were Caught Out'. John's latest article at Dances with Bears examines the question of what becomes of "the only democracy in the Middle East" now that its long-promised war is begun. John Helmer and 'THE GODS ARE GOING AGAINST THE CHOSEN PEOPLE — MAMMON AGAINST ISRAEL, MARS AGAINST THE PENTAGON' in the second half. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded October 29th, 2023 Is there method in this madness? Our story begins in an age of empires, where powers grappled for control, supremacy and resources, in a world that was rapidly changing. This narrative takes us into the heart of the Ottoman Empire, at the twilight of its existence, when the Arab provinces were chafing under the yoke of Turkification and centralization. This was a time when old alliances were fracturing, new ideologies were blooming, and the stage was being set for a revolt that would forever change the landscape of the Middle East. Enter Sherif Hussein of Mecca, a key figure who dreamed of a united Arab nation free from Ottoman rule. Inspired by a swelling wave of Arab nationalism, and fueled by promises from Britain of support for an independent Arab state, Hussein launched a revolt that would shake the foundations of the Ottoman Empire and redraw the map of the Middle East. This is a tale of heroism and treachery, of grand aspirations and harsh realities, and of promises made and promises broken. It is the tale of the Arab Revolt, an event that unfolded amidst the chaos of World War 1, reshaped the geopolitics of the Middle East, and left a legacy that continues to echo through the annals of history. Join us as we journey back in time, exploring the origins, progress, aftermath, and enduring impact of this monumental uprising.

Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploration into one key issue shaping Israel and the Jewish World — right now. Jewish-American journalist Norman Cousins once said, “History is a vast early warning system.” This week we speak with Oren Kessler, the author of “Palestine 1936,” who would likely agree. But as we see in Kessler's new book, history can also be a collection of missed opportunities. “David Ben-Gurion, starting in about 1933-34, had a series of meetings with a man by the name Musa Alami and he and Ben-Gurion met again and again throughout the early mid-1930s and they come tantalizingly close to some sort of an agreement before everything goes wrong, as tends to happen,” Kessler said this week in Jerusalem's Nomi Studios. Kessler's new book is about the Arab Revolt that took place from 1936-1939. He argues, quite convincingly, that these years in British Mandate Palestine form the roots of the Middle East conflict. The book attempts to illuminate all three sides of the complex relationship between the British, Jews and Arabs attempting to occupy the Holy Land during these formative years. Kessler is a journalist and political analyst based in  Tel Aviv. He spent five years researching and writing “Palestine 1936” and it's clearly a labor he loved. There are many lessons that have yet to be learned as we see this bloody history repeating itself in Israel, even today. So this week, we ask author Oren Kessler, what mattered then and why does that matter now? What Matters Now podcasts are available for download on iTunes, TuneIn, Pocket Casts, Stitcher, PlayerFM or wherever you get your podcasts. In the first half, he's a hero – in the second, he's losing his mind. T.E. Lawrence is the conflicted figure who inserts himself into the Arab Revolt during World War I, only to find his reputation, sanity, and very identity hanging in the balance. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA is one of the best regarded movies of all time. Normally, that raises an eyebrow, but in this case, we find it's absolutely still true. It's a multifaceted portrait not just of the soldier-turned-diplomat thrillseeker but of the entire British insertion into the Arabian Peninsula. Its strength is in its scope: Impossibly wide vistas frame four men sitting in a tent as broadly as entire tribes, rarely letting a single face speak for itself. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA is interested not in iconoclasm or image rehabilitation – only a complex, awesome portrait of a complex, awesome event and the people who shaped it. During World War One, a British soldier name Thomas Edward Lawrence or T.E. Lawrence found himself in his dream position, smack dab in the middle of Arabia helping to lead the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Turks. Lawrence of Arabia as he came to be known fought not only the Ottomans but also for the independence of the Arab people, even to the chagrin of his British superiors. He seemed at times fearless with his tactics for war, surprise attacking railways, crossing nearly impassable deserts to attack enemies where they least expected it. Join us for a lesson on this controversial historical figure.

The riders sat on their mounts, horses and camels, and gazed across the desert toward the shimmering sea and a small village on its shore. An old fortress dominated what passed for a skyline, the only building that stood more than two stories above the ground. Clusters of palm trees waved in the hot, dry wind, and the soldiers could see knots of people moving about in the town's plaza. No enemy troops were visible and no defenses prepared. The long journey across the desert toward their target had yielded a strategic surprise. Fifty men on horseback stayed in place, while the larger group of four hundred men riding camels began to move left and right. The soldiers on foot rested, knowing they would soon have to run across rocky ground to keep up with the cavalry. Two men had planned this attack; one would lead the horsemen straight toward the target while the other rode his camel around to hit the flanks. With only a nod from their leader, the men charged toward the town of Aqaba. Most students of the First World War know of the great campaigns by mighty armies on the Western and Eastern fronts. Some know of smaller battles fought in Italy, Greece, and on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. But few—apart from some movie buffs—know the story of the Great Arab Revolt of 1916-18 that brought down an empire that had lasted for over six centuries and gave us the modern Middle East with all its glories and terrors. The revolt was a minor affair in the minds of generals in London, Paris, Berlin, and Constantinople, and its impact on the overall course of the Great War was small. But it produced some of the greatest heroes of that war, men whose deeds shaped the future course of millions of lives around the world. TFJ Season 2 Episode 20  The Arab Revolt, The White Paper and the Évian Conference With the rise of Jewish immigration to Palestine in the 1930s the Arabs lodged their protest with violence, attacks, murder and mayhem that became known as the Arab Revolt (1936-1939). In response to the revolt, famous appeaser Neville Chamberlin, far more interested in Arab oil than the plight of millions of desperate Jews whose lives were in imminent danger, issued The White Paper of 1939. This entailed a severe limitation of Jewish immigration to Palestine. Despite the fact that the White Paper stated that the future of Jewish immigration would be determined by the Arab majority and limited if not curtailed the ability of Jews to buy land, it was still rejected by Palestine Arabs led by Haj Amin al-Husseini.   With the number of Jewish refugees in Europe at catastrophic dimensions consequential to the Nazi rise to power in Germany and in Austria, the Évian Conference was convened to ease their plight. The conference was a fiasco never intending to be of any help, and in fact, gravely worsened their condition.

Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded October 1st and 2nd, 2022 And welcome too to what appears to be the end of the pretense of Canada, the sovereign state. If we're honest, like Peter Pan's Tinkerbell, that place existed ever only as an article of faith: It was because we believed it, it was so. But in its deeds these last years, it is increasingly difficult to maintain the fiction this place named Canada is anything more in fact than a placeholder for Greater America and its now nakedly evident Empire. Yves Engler is a prolific author, essayist, and political activist. Among his dozen books are ten detailing various myths of "Canada's" foreign policy past and present. His hundreds of articles on that and other matters of the moment appear across the internet and at his site, YvesEngler.com. Yves is too the host of the Canadian Foreign Policy Hour, a "weekly news roundup and interactive discussion about Canada's role abroad." It's a forum made possible by the new communications environment, one that allows the citizenry sidestep corporate and state news mediation. Yves Engler in the first half. And; things are changing so rapidly it's almost pointless to write now, two days before my second guest's interview, about the previously mentioned Empire's efforts to overthrow Russian leadership and usurp entirely the European economy. Just today, on September's last day, NATO is entertaining an expedited application to accept Ukraine into its fold; even as Russia announces the adoption of Western Ukrainian territories. These two actions, should NATO complete its part, automatically create a state of war between the NATO states and Russia - setting the stage for World War III. Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded September 17th and 18th, 2022. This week past, the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency officially demanded Russia relinquish control of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, or (ZNPP), and "all nuclear facilities within Ukraine's internationally recognized borders" into the hands of "competent Ukraine authorities". The Russian-held nuclear plant has been repeatedly shelled and was too the target of a Kiev commando-raid. The IAEA's investigation on the status of the plant, and now this report, are precedent-setting for the agency, but not a departure from the recent trend toward politicizing international agencies to serve the interests of America and NATO. John Helmer is a journalist, author, and principle behind the web news site, Dances with Bears. He's a past professor of political science, sociology, and journalism and has served as advisor to governments at the highest level. John Helmer in the first half. And; even as the UN's IAEA and OPCW are co-opted against their mandates into the service of the war-state, so too countries big and small are strong-armed to bend their laws to suit the aims of the United States. Witness Great Britain's abandonment of the Magna Carta in the Assange case, or Canada's deplorable political arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou and two-plus year torturing of logic and jurisprudence required to keep her imprisoned. What chance then do smaller countries like Sweden, or Iceland, or Cabo Verde have when their leadership receives a call from Uncle Sam? In the latter's case, that phone rang when Venezuelan diplomat and businessman, Alex Saab's plane landed for refueling in the tiny African nation, en route to Iran. Today, Saab languishes in an American prison cell for the crime of challenging imperial power. Roger D. Harris' long civil rights activism career encompasses the teaching political science at a Historical Black College in Mississippi in the 1960's and community organizing in East Harlem, New York City. Today, Roger's a Wildlife Biologist and conducts eco-tours with the Oceanic Society, but he still has an oar or two in the activist waters; sitting on the board of the human rights organization, Task Force on the Americas, and serving on the executive committee of the US Peace Council, among others. His political essays feature online at CounterPunch, Dissident Voice, Mint Press News, Popular Resistance, and at the Task Force on the Americas site, where I found his recent article, 'Possible Prisoner Exchange in US Hybrid War Against Venezuela'. But few people know the book behind the movie. In this episode, host Zachary Davis speaks with Professor Charles Stang about Seven Pillars of Wisdom; the autobiographical account of British soldier T. E. Lawrence while he fought alongside rebel forces during the Arab Revolt in WWI. Charles Stang is Professor of Early Christian Thought and Director of the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard University. See more information on our website, WritLarge.fm. TFJ Series 2: Episode 2 The Arab revolt resulted in widespread violence across the land aimed at both Jewish and British targets. British officer and Christian Zionist, Orde Wingate trained Hagana fighters how to defend themselves. These troops assisted the British in quelling the Arab Revolt. These very same troops instructed by the British would become members of a Jewish revolt against the British less than ten years later. As the world was shocked by the atrocities performed against the Jews featured in the news after the Anschluss in March 1938, there was pressure in Washington to make a humanitarian effort on behalf of the refugees. America announced the Evian Conference to take place in July 1938 at Lake Geneva composed of 32 countries to alleviate the refugee crises. The conference was a total farce as no country, with the exception of the Dominican Republic, was prepared to open their borders and assist the refugees. This sent a clear message to Hitler that he would do whatever he wished and the suffering of millions of humans in Europe did not interest the world. Historically Speaking-Uncommon History with an Unconventional Pair

Lawrence of Arabia is the stuff of legend. There have been numerous books written and films made about him, but who was T.E. Lawrence actually? What made this man with so many talents, who was also immensely brave and resourceful, act and think as he did? Our 40th Episode explores some of the possible reasons. Books:Seven Pillars of Wisdom by T.E. LawrenceLawrence of Arabia: The Authorized Biography of T.E. Lawrence by Jeremy WilsonT.E. Lawrence by His Friends edited by Arnold LawrenceThe Letters of T.E. Lawrence edited by David GarnettFilm:Lawrence of Arabia (1962) Starring Peter O'TooleLawrence of Arabia: The Battle For The Arab World (2003) PBS Documentary Edits:T.E. Lawrence is buried in the churchyard of St. Nicolas' Church in Moreton, Dorset, but there is a memorial bust of Lawrence located in St. Paul's Cathedral in London.Even though we mentioned it, we never did get around to discussing the Allenby Rule. Per the 1962 film, when in Damascus and a large fire broke out, one of General Allenby's subordinates asked him, “What should be done?”  to which Allenby replied, “Nothing, it's usually best.” So, when a problem arises and you're faced with a myriad of options, often your best choice is to do nothing, i.e., the Allenby Rule.

The 1936 Arab Revolt was a turning point in this conflict.   It changed the nature of British policy, of Palestinian politics, and of Jewish politics.  To make this more accessible, I have broken the talk into two parts, A and B. You will notice that these thought were directed to a class.  There are a couple of times when I mention documents.  I wish I could attach documents to these podcasts, but perhaps you can find them on the internet. I suggest that you print out a map of the 1937 partition plan.  It will help when we discuss this. There are some other podcasts coming that pre-date this topic sequentially.   You haven't missed anything.  Interesting factoid:  Izzadin al Kassem, the Syrian religious scholar and reformer who joined the revolt, was killed in his first battle. Also, when I discussed the possibility that my wife might have divorced me when we were living in enya, that was a hypothetical example.  We are still happily married.
