On March 25, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled "Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections." This directive introduces several significant changes to the U.S. electoral process, including:Proof of Citizenship for Voter Registration: States are required to verify the citizenship status of individuals during the voter registration process.Mail-In Ballot Deadlines: The order mandates that all mail-in ballots must be received by Election Day to be counted.Ban on Foreign Donations: It prohibits foreign contributions within 30 days of an election.States that do not comply with these provisions risk losing federal funding.  The executive order has sparked considerable controversy and legal debate. Critics argue that it infringes upon states' rights to regulate their own election procedures, as outlined in the U.S. Constitution. Legal experts anticipate numerous challenges to the order's constitutionality, citing concerns over potential voter disenfranchisement and the president's authority over independent election agencies. With Dan Bongino now joining the Trump administration, we have a unique opportunity to expand this program and potentially step into some of the radio slots he's leaving behind. In this video I share the story of Martin Luther publishing the 95 Theses in 1517 due to corruption by the church and monarchs of his day. This led to political and social turmoil in Europe that is known as the reformation, which inspired a continent and ultimately the world. You see, Martin Luther took on the Catholic church and monarchs by letting common folks know that they didn't need to go to a priest to pay for the forgiveness of their sins. Instead they could pray directly to God and be forgiven. This greatly upset the church because it reduced their cashflow and as a result, They put a bounty on Martin Luther's head, but he was able to find shelter with local princes in Germany. His 95 Theses had a major impact because it was translated into multiple languages and printed and distributed all over Europe. This was made possible by the invention of the Gutenberg Press, which was the greatest technological advance of its time. What started in 1517 led to the Enlightenment Era nearly 130 years later. Because it became widely accepted that all men could go to God directly, political and social leaders like John Locke realized that the only way to make all men equal in the eyes of the government was to creating a system where every man had an equal right to vote for their local and national leadership. As a result, voting became the most powerful way to participate in the political process. While African American's were supposed to be able to vote in 1866 after the civil war, many Southern states had discriminatory laws that prohibited African Americans from voting. In later years Susan B. Anthony in America and Emmeline Pankhurst in England fought for Women to have the right to vote. Ultimately, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 gave all African Americans the right to vote. When we look at history, true power starts at the polls in modern societies. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and John F. Kennedy all understood this and that is why they were assassinated. In the eyes of the law we are all equal because we all have the right to vote. If you Don't vote you don't matter in the eyes of those in power. Let your voice and vote be heard if you truly want to facilitate change. This is especially true when it comes to local elections. #historyofvoting #historyofdemocracy #biblicalorigins #votingday #election #electionday #martinlutherking #martinluther #malcomx #jfk

Oregon women fought for decades to access their right to vote

This election season, we’re looking back at the fight for women’s suffrage. When Oregon became a state, only white men could vote. Women worked for more than four decades to get men to vote for their rights. Racism hampered the movement, as many white women didn’t want to work with women of color in their activism. Black women formed their own groups and pushed hard for ballot access. Only then did the movement have enough momentum to succeed. Oregon women won the right to vote in 1912, eight years before women’s suffrage became a national law. Many barriers kept women of color from voting until the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.    Nearly 80 years after women won the right to vote in Oregon, the state finally elected its first female governor, Barbara Roberts. In 2022, the three major candidates for Oregon governor were all women.   You can see the Oregon Experience documentary about women’s suffrage in Oregon here.   For more Evergreen episodes and to share your voice with us, visit our showpage. Whether it's the right to vote, the right to read, or the right to decide the fate of one's body, North Carolinians are on the frontlines. The state has banned gender-affirming care for minors; its MAGA Republican gubernatorial candidate is calling for death for LGBTQ people and a total abortion ban. Will Proud Boys show up at polling sites this November to intimidate voters? In this special report, Laura speaks with Attorney General and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Josh Stein, and correspondent Lewis Raven Wallace examines the agenda of his Trump-endorsed opponent, Lt. Governor Mark Robinson. Laura also checks in with organizers and activists from past episodes. Among those: Serena Sebring, Executive Director of Blueprint NC; Mab Segrest, Writer, Organizer & Consultant with Blueprint NC; Courtney Patterson, Eastern North Carolina Organizer at Blueprint NC; and LGBTQIA+ youth activist Alex Lafferty. As you'll hear, North Carolina is a microcosm of this country. The question remains: where is the state headed this November and beyond?“There's a lot of people I know, a lot of trans people who want to go on hormones but don't have the ability to. And there are things coming up where they want to ban gender affirming care for not just minors but of any age, which is genocide. You can't destroy an entire community and see that as legal.” - Alex Lafferty“I'm seriously afraid that [Proud Boys] will show up in these polling places . . . They feel empowered right now. They feel that they are above the law, so they will do things, make things, they'll take chances because they feel like they'll get away with it.” - Courtney Patterson“I think we use infrastructure and people in order to meet a threat that ultimately is countered by one thing, and that's massive turnout. The best thing that we can do to protect safety in North Carolina is register and turn out voters at a scale that is historic.” Serena Sebring“In 2024, state capture is possible at the national level because it's been petri dished in these other places like North Carolina . . . If they get it, they can do anything they want to. And so they get more and more extreme, more violent, more dangerous because they're unchecked.” - Mab Segrest“North Carolina really is a bit of a microcosm of this country. We're a 50/50 state, elections swing back and forth. We're on the front lines of a number of critical battles, whether it's people's right to vote or whether it's their right to exercise decisions about their own bodies through reproductive decisions . . . We're really on the front lines about protecting people's freedoms.” - Josh SteinGuests:• Alex Lafferty:   Trans Activist, Artist and Composer • Courtney Patterson: Eastern North Carolina Organizer, Blueprint NC• Serena Sebring: Executive Director, Blueprint NC• Mab Segrest: Writer, Organizer & Consultant, Blueprint NC• Josh Stein: Attorney General & Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Full Episode Notes are located HERE.  They include related episodes, articles, and more. Many people expected the 2024 presidential election would be unpredictable.  But no one anticipated the recent sequence of events - Joe Biden's debate performance, the assassination attempt on Donald Trump and Kamala Harris's move to the top of the Democratic ticket. On this Us & Them episode, host Trey Kay looks at where all this is leading to… the ballot box. History often helps provide context, so Kay talks with two historians about our right to vote and access to the ballot box. We look back at just what the Constitution and America's Founding Fathers intended for our elections. As we dive into the history of voting rights, we learn that concept wasn't really at the heart of things during the birth of the nation. Actually, in the beginning, voting was a privilege for only a few people in the very new nation that would become the United States.

It's one of the most significant moments in our country's political history — as explained by Hillary Clinton in her speech to the Democratic National Convention last night — and it happened at the State Capitol right here in Nashville. Official Davidson County Historian Dr. Carole Bucy joins host Grace Fuisz to tell us the story of our city's role in the suffrage movement, and the lessons we can learn from the "War of the Roses" that took place downtown, 104 years ago. Thanks to Tecovas, our Western wear faves, for being our exclusive launch sponsor! You can explore the Votes for Women Room at the Nashville Public Library's main branch when it reopens in October. Why French youth are once again under fire as the government vows to crack down on violent crime. The staying power of Ionesco's The Bald Soprano in one of Paris's smallest theatres. And why French women won the right to vote so much later than many of their European neighbours. In recent weeks President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Gabriel Attal have been looking for ways to tackle what Macron has called a wave of ultraviolence sweeping the country. They've put the focus on young people, but not everyone agrees with the assessment. Critics have denounced the government proposals as reactionary, fuelling yet another "war" on youth. Sociologist Laurent Mucchielli, who says statistics do not show any rise in violent crime committed by youngsters, talks about why France regularly targets young people, and how it is often linked to electoral politics. (Listen @2'15'')The Bald Soprano and The Lesson, by Romanian-French avant-garde playwright Eugène Ionesco, have been running at the tiny Théatre de la Huchette in Paris five times a week non-stop since 1957. Two million people have flocked to watch the plays, which are performed in their original staging and set. But what's it like for the 45-member company, some of whom have been acting in Ionesco's absurdist universe for more than 30 years? We went along to the 20,024th performance to find out. (Listen @18'50'')French women obtained the right to vote on 21 April 1944, later than most other countries in Europe. Historian Anne-Sarah Moalic talks about the long road to equal suffrage, which required patient activism along with a bit of geopolitical chaos. And a woman who voted in France's very first elections open to all adults, in April 1945, recalls the excitement and pressure of her maiden trip to the ballot box. Rick Hasen: A Real Right to Vote

Throughout history, many Americans have been disenfranchised or faced needless barriers to voting. Part of the blame falls on the Constitution, which does not contain an affirmative right to vote. The U.S. Supreme Court failed to protect voting rights and limited Congress's ability to do so. That's why some are saying that the time has come for voters to take action and push for an amendment to the Constitution that would guarantee this right for all. Drawing on troubling stories of state attempts to disenfranchise military voters, women, African Americans, students, former felons, Native Americans, and others, UCLA law professor Richard Hasen argues that American democracy can and should do better in assuring that all eligible voters can cast a meaningful vote that will be fairly counted. He says a constitutional right to vote can deescalate voting wars between political parties that lead to endless rounds of litigation and undermine voter confidence in elections, and can safeguard democracy against dangerous attempts at election subversion like the one we witnessed in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election. The path to a constitutional amendment is undoubtedly hard, especially in these polarized times. Join us as Hasen explains what's in it for conservatives who have resisted voting reform and reveals how the pursuit of an amendment can yield tangible dividends for democracy long before ratification. Richard L. Hasen is Professor of Law and Political Science at UCLA and director of UCLA Law's Safeguarding Democracy Project. We discuss his most recent book, A Real Right to Vote: How a Constitutional Amendment Can Safeguard American Democracy.   A country that believes that its people are equal should ensure equal voting rights. However, the US Constitution does not currently protect the right to vote. All adult non-felon citizens should have a constitutional right to vote where they reside. That vote should be equally weighted and eligible voters should not face unnecessary burdens to voting. Furthermore, minority voters should have voter protection and Congress should have broad powers to protect voting rights. Even though the US has not enacted a constitutional amendment since the 1970s, Americans should start thinking about a movement towards passing a voting rights amendment with the expectation that it might take decades. Rich Hasen reminds us that “Nobody is coming to save American democracy. We have to do it ourselves, and people are stepping up.”  Follow Rick on Twitter:  https://twitter.com/rickhasen   Follow Mila on Twitter:  https://twitter.com/milaatmos    Follow Future Hindsight on Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/futurehindsightpod/   Sponsor:  Thanks to Shopify for supporting Future Hindsight! As the Supreme Court has chipped away at the Voting Rights Act, renewed calls have been made for ways to protect all Americans' right to vote. Richard L. Hasen is professor of law and political science at UCLA and director of UCLA Law's Safeguarding Democracy Project. He joins host Krys Boyd to discuss why he feels we need a Constitutional amendment guaranteeing the right to vote, and why leaving it to the courts to decide who can vote is a bad idea. His book is “A Real Right to Vote: How a Constitutional Amendment Can Safeguard American Democracy.”
