For the first time in 21 years, Nationwide Building Society members will see a genuine choice on their AGM ballot paper. Jeremy McKeown sits down with James Sherwin-Smith, fintech executive, former MasterCard senior leader, and Oliver Wyman strategist, who is standing as the first member-nominated candidate for the Nationwide board since 2005.In this episode, James reveals what it actually takes to challenge the UK's largest building society: an FCA hearing, 350 hand-collected paper nomination forms, and a year-long battle over access to the member register. We explore why the Virgin Money acquisition went through without a member vote, why mutuals matter for everyone (not just their customers), and what every Nationwide member needs to know before ballots land in June ahead of the AGM on 15 July.Whether you're a Nationwide member, a building society customer, or simply interested in corporate governance and financial democracy, this conversation exposes a quiet erosion of member rights and what one maverick is doing about it.What You'll LearnWhy Nationwide's acquisition of Virgin Money never went to a member vote — and what it revealed about the society's governanceHow the "quick vote" box on Nationwide's ballot steers c. 85% of votes straight to the board's recommendationThe story behind James's FCA hearing (the first in 30 years) and his statutory fight for access to the member registerWhy the bar for member nominations was raised five times higher in 2000 — and what that means for democracy in mutualsHow a strong mutual sector keeps the wider banking market honest (and why mutuals didn't need bailing out in 2008)Why virtual-only AGMs are bad for member accountabilityThe difference between member ownership in theory and in practice at a £300bn institutionWhat every Nationwide member should do when their ballot arrives in JuneLinks & ResourcesJames's campaign website: james4nationwide.co.ukConnect with James on LinkedInJeremy on Substack: Hypernormal TimesEmail Jeremy: jeremymckeown@gmail.comSponsor: Progressive EquityTraining partner: Finance TalkingNationwide Building Society, Nationwide AGM 2026, James Sherwin Smith, member-nominated director, building society governance, Virgin Money acquisition, UK mutuals, mutual building society, corporate governance, FCA, financial democracy, member voting rights, Nationwide ballot, quick vote, cooperative banking, retail banking UK, Jeremy McKeown, In the Company of Mavericks

A theme has emerged this week: as the Dallas County Democratic Party throws in the towel on a lawsuit over denied voting access on primary Election Night, judging the Republican-dominated Texas Supreme Court a hostile venue for that complaint - while our senior Senator John Cornyn reverses himself on the filibuster out of pressure from Donald Trump and Ken Paxton to pass the SAVE America Act, which will allow the GOP to disenfranchise untold millions of American voters - the very foundation of our democracy is now under slow, steady, determined attack. Thanks for listening! There have been reports of Muslim voters being targeted for deletion through fraudulent use of Form 7 across different states - Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Assam, Gujarat and West Bengal. But that's not the only way in which their right to vote is being attacked. The Quint narrates three ways in which this process is taking place and could expand across India. The UK government is giving 16-and-17-year-olds the right to vote. BBC Political Correspondent Rob Watson spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
In this episode, Niall asks: Should Irish citizens living abroad or in Northern Ireland have the right to vote in Irish elections?Sinn Féin has put forward a motion to extend voting rights in presidential elections to Irish citizens overseas and in the North. Supporters say it would honour the global Irish community and reflect modern realities. Opponents argue that voting should be reserved for those who live, work, and pay tax in Ireland. Some callers said voting must be tied to residency. They felt people living abroad are too disconnected from daily life in Ireland to influence decisions that don't affect them directly. Others raised concerns about security, fraud, and voters basing choices on outdated views. But others passionately supported the motion, saying Irishness doesn't end at the border. They pointed to the importance of the diaspora in shaping Ireland's story and said presidential elections are largely symbolic. One caller argued that excluding Irish citizens in Northern Ireland is especially unjust. As Niall points out, the debate raises deep questions about identity, participation, and what it really means to belong to a nation — even from afar.
Today, Sinn Féin brought a Private Member's Bill on extending voting rights to Irish Citizens outside the state for the Presidential Election. This has been hotly debated for years, with the Constitutional Convention first recommending this extension in 2013.Sinn Féin Senator Conor Murphy joins guest host Jonathan Healy to discuss.

On March 25, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled "Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections." This directive introduces several significant changes to the U.S. electoral process, including:Proof of Citizenship for Voter Registration: States are required to verify the citizenship status of individuals during the voter registration process.Mail-In Ballot Deadlines: The order mandates that all mail-in ballots must be received by Election Day to be counted.Ban on Foreign Donations: It prohibits foreign contributions within 30 days of an election.States that do not comply with these provisions risk losing federal funding. The executive order has sparked considerable controversy and legal debate. Critics argue that it infringes upon states' rights to regulate their own election procedures, as outlined in the U.S. Constitution. Legal experts anticipate numerous challenges to the order's constitutionality, citing concerns over potential voter disenfranchisement and the president's authority over independent election agencies. Is the SAVE Act Really Removing Women's Right to Vote? Indirectly, yes. But like all things in politics, the indirect ways are still intentional. Episode 4031: Stand Your Ground. Don't Be Deterred. It Is Your Right To Vote (cont)
This election season, we’re looking back at the fight for women’s suffrage. When Oregon became a state, only white men could vote. Women worked for more than four decades to get men to vote for their rights. Racism hampered the movement, as many white women didn’t want to work with women of color in their activism. Black women formed their own groups and pushed hard for ballot access. Only then did the movement have enough momentum to succeed. Oregon women won the right to vote in 1912, eight years before women’s suffrage became a national law. Many barriers kept women of color from voting until the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Nearly 80 years after women won the right to vote in Oregon, the state finally elected its first female governor, Barbara Roberts. In 2022, the three major candidates for Oregon governor were all women. You can see the Oregon Experience documentary about women’s suffrage in Oregon here. Josh Stein vs. Mark Robinson: The Fight for Rights in North Carolina's Upcoming Elections. In-depth analysis of North Carolina's political landscape reveals increasing threats to democracy and individual freedoms, with exclusive interviews by Laura including Democratic gubernatorial candidate Josh Stein and activists on the frontline. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: North Carolina is a battleground state, and a petri dish for extremist policy and practice. Whether it's the right to vote, the right to read, or the right to decide the fate of one's body, North Carolinians are on the frontlines. The state has banned gender-affirming care for minors; its MAGA Republican gubernatorial candidate is calling for death for LGBTQ people and a total abortion ban. Will Proud Boys show up at polling sites this November to intimidate voters? In this special report, Laura speaks with Attorney General and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Josh Stein, and correspondent Lewis Raven Wallace examines the agenda of his Trump-endorsed opponent, Lt. Governor Mark Robinson. Laura also checks in with organizers and activists from past episodes. Among those: Serena Sebring, Executive Director of Blueprint NC; Mab Segrest, Writer, Organizer & Consultant with Blueprint NC; Courtney Patterson, Eastern North Carolina Organizer at Blueprint NC; and LGBTQIA+ youth activist Alex Lafferty. As you'll hear, North Carolina is a microcosm of this country. The question remains: where is the state headed this November and beyond?“There's a lot of people I know, a lot of trans people who want to go on hormones but don't have the ability to. And there are things coming up where they want to ban gender affirming care for not just minors but of any age, which is genocide. You can't destroy an entire community and see that as legal.” - Alex Lafferty“I'm seriously afraid that [Proud Boys] will show up in these polling places . . . They feel empowered right now. They feel that they are above the law, so they will do things, make things, they'll take chances because they feel like they'll get away with it.” - Courtney Patterson“I think we use infrastructure and people in order to meet a threat that ultimately is countered by one thing, and that's massive turnout. The best thing that we can do to protect safety in North Carolina is register and turn out voters at a scale that is historic.” Serena Sebring“In 2024, state capture is possible at the national level because it's been petri dished in these other places like North Carolina . . . If they get it, they can do anything they want to. And so they get more and more extreme, more violent, more dangerous because they're unchecked.” - Mab Segrest“North Carolina really is a bit of a microcosm of this country. We're a 50/50 state, elections swing back and forth. We're on the front lines of a number of critical battles, whether it's people's right to vote or whether it's their right to exercise decisions about their own bodies through reproductive decisions . . . We're really on the front lines about protecting people's freedoms.” - Josh SteinGuests:• Alex Lafferty: Trans Activist, Artist and Composer • Courtney Patterson: Eastern North Carolina Organizer, Blueprint NC• Serena Sebring: Executive Director, Blueprint NC• Mab Segrest: Writer, Organizer & Consultant, Blueprint NC• Josh Stein: Attorney General & Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Full Episode Notes are located HERE. Election denialism and myths of voter fraud have long been part of the history of the United States. In their new book, Represent: The Unfinished Fight for the Vote, Michael Eric Dyson and Marc Favreau trace the contentious battle for democratic representation from the American Revolution to the present day–up to the 2024 election. In today's episode, Dyson and Favreau speak with NPR's Ayesha Rascoe about lesser-known heroes in the struggle for voting rights, the political impact of non-voters and the legacy of recent events like the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Episode 3893: Protecting Our Right To Vote; Victories In Nevada and Ohio
Many people expected the 2024 presidential election would be unpredictable. But no one anticipated the recent sequence of events - Joe Biden's debate performance, the assassination attempt on Donald Trump and Kamala Harris's move to the top of the Democratic ticket. On this Us & Them episode, host Trey Kay looks at where all this is leading to… the ballot box. History often helps provide context, so Kay talks with two historians about our right to vote and access to the ballot box. We look back at just what the Constitution and America's Founding Fathers intended for our elections. As we dive into the history of voting rights, we learn that concept wasn't really at the heart of things during the birth of the nation. Actually, in the beginning, voting was a privilege for only a few people in the very new nation that would become the United States.

And, she's on a mission to get them registered and active as voters! “The goal is to get individuals to register to vote, understand their rights as a citizen, and to push for restorative justice,” Cross says. You'll learn how you and I must spread the word, why voting rights can influence generational wealth building for many, and all of the state-by-state regulations we need to spread far and wide.
