Florida es un estado especial para mi: aquí vivo y aquí fue donde mi esposo y yo adoptamos a nuestros dos hijos, hermanitos biológicos que no quisimos separar.Fue en Miami donde nos preparamos y certificarnos como Foster Parents…y donde nos “arriesgamos” a pasar por un proceso cuya meta del gobierno es la reunificación, y sí, lo sabíamos: que las familias separadas de sus hijos logren corregir sus fallas o superar sus retos para entonces encontrarse de nuevo. La meta de la corte y el estado NO es encontrar padres adoptivos para los que queremos tener familia. Si el caso NO termina en reunificación, es ahi cuando el caso es elegible para la adopcion....Los familiares biológicos inmediatos y/o los foster parents son los primeros en ser ser considerados por el gobierno para acoger permanentemente a este niño...o niños.El recorrido hacia a adopción de menores es emocionalmente retador pero ¡vale la pena! Este episodio puede ayudarlos a despejar dudas, a minimizar estigmas (¿es costoso adoptar a través del foster care? -¡NO!) y quizás los impulse a dar el paso sabiendo que hacer lo correcto (en nombre del bienestar, seguridad y protección de un menor) puede quizás superar sus ganas de ser llamado "papá" o "mamá" …A mi me pasó… Porque proteger niños vulnerables temporalmente (a veces con la intención de adoptarlos), les va a dar, créanme, un valor agregado también a su vida y los va a ayudar (se los juro) en su evolución mental y emocional...terminen o no adoptándolos. A fin de cuentas…todos queremos un mundo mejor para todos (eso espero)….y este proceso camino a la adopción puede generar -a través de sus logros o experiencias con el “sistema”- que otras familias se animen a tomar la vía del cuidado temporal como su ruta para que quizás terminen adoptando. ¡Es un proceso “caóticamente gratificante”! Play Cousins Collective is a Black centered family care network based in Louisville, Kentucky. They are building multi-generational and inter-sectional Black spaces and community resources rooted in ancestral methods of healing and resistance. Through offering programs at every stage of development, from in utero to adult they are able to foster a supported and resilient community.In this episode I speak with executive director Kristen Williams about the significance of building a village amongst the African-American community. She shares how they started with mapping out all of the Black businesses and practitioners in their community, voids children of color experience in educational institutions and communities, tools they are utilizing to affirm Black power and beauty from a young age, decolonization of mentality and practices, the multitude of programs they offer to all ages, membership structure, how they navigate generational trauma and healing, and more!
