AI can help you create a personalized marketing plan that appeals to any and every algorithm out there. That being said, not everyone knows how to use AI or use it well.    A lot of people are afraid that AI is going to steal their jobs and leave them destitute. But AI is a tool - it's as much a tool for you as a hammer is to a carpenter. And in this week's episode, we're talking to an expert in tech to teach you how to take your business to the next level.    This week's guest is Nikki Barua, the Interim CEO of Latinas in Tech. This week the world has come together to mourn the death of Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday, age 88. As speculation mounts about who will replace him, and whether they will be a reformer or traditionalist, we want to reflect on Pope France's contribution to the climate movement and the change he drove around the world, not just across the 1.4 billion Catholics he led, but beyond to other religions and cultures too. Pope Francis was an unapologetic environmental advocate, and he used his papacy to raise awareness about the critical need to curb greenhouse gas emissions. While many believed he shouldn't discuss it, because it was considered ‘political,' the Pope said that climate change was a spiritual issue, and he clearly laid out the consequences of not tackling it in his 2015 “Laudato Si” - the first-ever papal encyclical focused solely on the environment. In it, he discussed climate change, loss of biodiversity to water scarcity, as well as societal breakdown, and how the poorest would suffer the most. A follow-up “Laudato Si” was published in 2023, and in this, Pope Francis called for a broad change in the “irresponsible lifestyle connected with the Western model.” So, we must ask - did we listen? Because global emissions have kept rising, including record emissions released in 2024. One positive sign of the Pope's contribution is environmental leaders from around the world acknowledging the impact he had in waking the world up to the dangers we face, leaving a legacy firmly entrenched in the climate movement. The Pope was a climate activist. We had two very special guests join us. Clare Westwood, who is a powerhouse in the climate movement, and regional director of the Roman Catholic Episcopal Commission for Creation Justice of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, and the Co-Founder and Executive Chair of Laudato Si' Asia – a Coalition for Culture of Care, Resilience and Ecological Justice (LSIA-CAREJ). Dr Lorna Gold is the Executive Director of the Laudato Sì Movement. Lorna's focus is on supporting the team at a time of significant change, amplifying the intersection of faith and environmental stewardship. Since 2015, LSM's team's dedication has cultivated a global network advancing ecological conversion. Dr Gold's tenure as Interim CEO at FaithInvest fortified her resolve to align faith-based investments with environmental and social sustainability, pioneering strategies that resonate with shared values for a healthier planet. We'll be discussing the Pope's legacy and a lot more of the environmental news we think you should be aware of, including the economic and geopolitical situation the world is currently in, so come and join us, 25th April, 8am UK, 2pm TH, 3pm SG, 6pm AEST. Climate Courage is a livestream, held every two weeks and is co-hosted by Andrea T Edwards, Dr. David Ko and Richard Busellato. On the show, we cover critical topics across the full spectrum of the polycrisis, in everyday language, and we go big picture on the climate crisis, while also drilling down and focusing on the actions we can all take to be part of the solution. Whether individual action, community action, or national/global action - every single one of us can be part of ensuring a live-able future for our children and grandchildren. Interview with Justin Black, CMO, and Jean-Paul Tsotsos, Interim CEO of Chesapeake Gold Corp. Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/chesapeake-gold-tsxvckg-innovative-technology-new-gold-ounces-5163Recording date: 7th April 2025Chesapeake Gold has developed a groundbreaking oxidation technology that could revolutionize how refractory gold deposits are mined globally. The company's Metates deposit in Mexico, containing 17 million ounces of gold and 423 million ounces of silver, was previously considered too challenging to develop economically due to its refractory nature, where gold is trapped in sulfide minerals. The proprietary technology transforms sulfide ore into oxide ore through an accelerated oxidation process, making previously unrecoverable gold accessible through conventional heap leaching. This innovation essentially compresses what would naturally take "100 million years" into just months, by applying special reagents that strip sulfur from pyrite crystals and replace it with oxygen. The economic impact is dramatic. Previous development plans for Metates required pressure oxidation autoclave technology with a capital expenditure of approximately $3.5 billion for a 90,000 ton per day operation, yielding a sub-10% internal rate of return (IRR). With the new technology, Chesapeake can start with a 15,000 ton per day operation at a capital cost of just $360 million, achieving a 35% IRR and all-in sustaining costs of approximately $750 per ounce.Justin Black, Chesapeake's Chief Metallurgical Officer who previously worked with the technology at Hycroft Mining, demonstrated its effectiveness on a commercial scale with a 150,000-ton test pad. Material that initially had only 20% recoverable gold achieved 80-90% recovery after treatment. For Metates specifically, tests showed that material oxidized for 204 days reached nearly 75% gold recovery compared to just 33% for untreated ore.Beyond economics, the technology offers significant environmental advantages over traditional methods for processing refractory ores, including lower water consumption, reduced energy usage, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.According to CEO Jean Paul Tsotsos, this technology could unlock a market worth approximately $1.5 trillion in currently inaccessible gold resources. McKinsey estimates approximately 580 million ounces of gold globally are considered refractory, with these deposits typically offering higher grades (averaging 2.25 g/t versus 1.21 g/t for non-refractory deposits). The company has identified over 200 deposits globally where the technology could apply and is advancing on multiple fronts, including continuing test work, analyzing samples from other companies, and planning to establish a pilot plant to further demonstrate the technology's effectiveness.View Chesapeake Gold's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/chesapeake-goldSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Dublin based aviation analytics solutions company Aerlytix has announced that it has secured a grant of €455,000 through Enterprise Ireland's Research, Development & Innovation (RD&I) fund. This will directly support the development of new products and services to optimise the airline industry's analytical capabilities around fleet planning and financing. The company, which was founded in 2020, has also announced that it plans to create 23 new jobs by 2027 focusing mainly on technical and software development roles. Eight of these new roles have already been filled in recent months. This R&D project aims to create analytics software, designed with airlines, that drives fleet optimisation and enables better financial risk management. This will support the sector to resolve technical challenges, increase employment in Irish aviation companies and drive international business growth. Speaking at the announcement at Aerlytix's Dublin HQ, Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke T.D said, "I wish to commend the team at Aerlytix on its recent success. Aviation is a key driver of our economy, supporting both direct and indirect employment, and provides crucial connectivity for tourism and business. Ireland is a world leader in aviation leasing whereby more than 65% of the world's aircraft are leased here. "Aerlytix continues to make significant inroads into critical segments of the aircraft leasing industry. By providing tangible solutions through innovative analytics technologies, the company is helping to reduce inefficiencies for the sector and accelerate digital transformation across individual organisations. Aerlytix has significant growth plans to further enhance its offering and scale its talented team here in Dublin and I wish the company the very best." Commenting on the announcement, Aerlytix Finance Director, Órla Kearney said: 'The grant funding from Enterprise Ireland's RD&I Programme accelerates development and delivery of our next generation technology project for customers. This investment program is propelling Irish-based technology companies forward. We are excited to extend and scale our aviation technology solutions to a broader set of international clients." Speaking on the RD&I fund, Kevin Sherry, Interim CEO, Enterprise Ireland said: "Driving substantially increased investment in Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) by Irish businesses is a key priority in Enterprise Ireland's new five-year strategy, 'Delivering for Ireland, Leading Globally'. That increased investment in innovation is a key driver in the success of Enterprise Ireland's client base both in Ireland and in international markets. "Research shows that businesses that invest in innovation have 2.5 times higher turnover and 4.7 times greater exports than companies not investing in RD&I. Aerlytix has made great progress in a short space of time to develop innovative proprietary analytics solutions for the aviation sector, an area where Ireland leads the way globally in aircraft leasing. We are delighted to support Aerlytix growth plans with significant RD&I funding targeted at supporting the company to deliver accelerated growth across global markets, develop key R&D projects, and create highly skilled new jobs in Ireland." Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless TD, and Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Neale Richmond TD, today announced €2.2 million funding for research projects that seek to address the global issues of hunger and food insecurity. The Sustainable Development Goals Challenge is run in partnership with Irish Aid, and the six research projects receiving funding are focused on SDG 2: Zero Hunger. The research teams will develop a wide range of solutions that can contribute to ending hunger, achieving food security and promoting sustainable agriculture. €2.2 million research funding for Zero Hunger The projects include: Empowering women farmers in Malawi to overcome the unique barriers they face and breakdown gender inequities in agriculture. Leveraging and strengthening digital health systems in Uganda to tackle hunger, food access and malnutrition in vulnerable populations. Ensuring that women from marginalized communities in Sub-Saharan Africa can access nutrient-rich meals, improving maternal-child health outcomes through Mobile health (mHealth) interventions. Integrating indigenous knowledge with climate-smart agricultural technologies to build resilience in smallholder farming practices in Malawi. Using AI to help farmers in Vietnam achieve high rice yields while preserving soil and saving water in the context of environmental and climate pressures. Developing solar-powered crop processing machines for climate-resilient grain crops to decrease postharvest loss and increase productivity for smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe. Minister James Lawless said: "Today's funding announcement reinforces Ireland's commitment to implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. With over 700 million people continuing to face food insecurity and malnutrition globally, the research of these six teams can make a real and positive impact at an international level. As these projects progress through collaboration with researchers in Irish Aid partner countries, they will work directly with those most impacted by the challenges they are addressing, delivering tangible solutions to significant societal challenges. I wish the teams every success over the coming months." Minister Neale Richmond said: "Ireland is committed to creating a more equal and sustainable world. Investment in transforming global food systems is crucial to delivering on this commitment. Irish Aid's ongoing partnership with Research Ireland is an important driver of innovative and transformational change. With this Challenge focused on the Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger, the projects funded today will help us combat chronic hunger, under-nutrition and gender inequality for food systems transformation." Celine Fitzgerald, Interim CEO, Research Ireland, said: "The SDG Challenge programme is an inspiring example of the power of international collaboration and strategic research funding. Challenge-based research funding encourages researchers to work directly with those most affected by the problems they seek to address and Research Ireland's collaboration with Irish Aid has enabled truly international research partnerships. Ireland has a whole-of-government approach to the implementation of the SDGs and the projects funded today are a leading example of this integrated commitment. I look forward to following the progress these teams make as they develop their research projects." The six projects represent international collaborations between research institutes in Ireland and in Irish Aid partner countries - in this case, South Africa, Malawi, Uganda, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe. The research teams funded today will have the opportunity to compete for an overall prize fund of €1 million for the most competitive team as part of this challenge-based funding programme. Prof. Mark Smales has been awarded over €3.5 million through the prestigious Research Ireland Research Professorship Programme. Holding a joint appointment between the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) and the University of Kent, Prof. Smales will lead a five-year research programme focused on revolutionising the manufacturing of next generation biotherapeutics. The project will be based at NIBRT and will support a dedicated research team, including three PhD studentships. Biotherapeutics, such as monoclonal antibodies, gene therapies, and RNA-based medicines, have transformed the treatment of diseases worldwide. Manufacturing these advanced therapies, however, remains complex, inefficient, and costly, limiting their availability and impact. Prof. Smales' research will take a pioneering approach to redefine how these medicines are produced, making manufacturing more efficient, predictable, and scalable. The project will focus on three key areas: Gene Therapy Production - Understanding the biology of the cells and genetic components that underpin gene therapy manufacturing and developing improved production systems. RNA Therapeutics - Investigating how RNA sequences, modifications, and control elements impact their effectiveness as vaccines and therapeutics. Bioprocess Engineering - Applying cutting-edge engineering biology techniques to create new cell factories capable of producing novel format, complex biotherapeutic proteins with improved quality and yield. Commenting on the award, Prof. Smales said: "I am honoured to receive this Research Ireland Professorship award, which will allow us to harness the breadth of world class infrastructure and 'know-how' at NIBRT and across Ireland in the advanced biotherapeutic therapies sector. "IUltimately, this research will deepen our understanding of the science that governs efficiency, predictability and certainty in the design and production of next generation biotherapeutics, so that these can be manufactured at the required quantity and quality for assessment and application in practice. I look forward to working with my colleagues at NIBRT and the University of Kent to deliver real impact for the field and, ultimately, for patients worldwide." CSO & Director of Research and Innovation at NIBRT, Dr. Fiona Killard-Lynch, commented: "Prof. Mark Smales' Research Ireland Research Professorship award is a well-deserved recognition of his leadership in biopharmaceutical research. This funding will enable Mark and his team to drive innovation in gene therapies, RNA medicines, and next-generation protein therapeutics. As a Principal Investigator at NIBRT, this programme will play a key role in advancing cutting-edge biopharmaceutical research, strengthening Ireland's position as a global leader in biopharmaceutical manufacturing. Celine Fitzgerald, Interim CEO of Research Ireland, said: "We are delighted to support Prof. Mark Smales appointment to NIBRT through the Research Ireland Professorship Programme. The programme attracts world-leading researchers to Ireland to build critical expertise and reinforce Ireland's reputation in the global research and innovation landscape. Prof. Smales brings with him over 20 years' experience and expertise in biotherapeutics. "Finding more effective ways to manufacture these therapies will improve outcomes for patients and increase the accessibility of life-changing treatments. Prof. Smales work in this area of translational medicine will help strengthen Ireland's biopharma and biomanufacturing sector, contributing to the advancement of fundamental knowledge within this field." Ahead of United Nations (UN) International Women's Day, the national STEM Teacher Internship (STInt) programme, coordinated by Dublin City University (DCU), is urging teachers and businesses to get involved and inspire the next generation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) leaders. One primary teacher will impact 1,000 learners in their career, while one secondary teacher will impact 5,000. Now in its 10th year, 310 teachers have engaged with the STInt programme to date and their involvement has the potential to impact over 1.2 million learners over the course of their careers. The STInt programme is supported by Skillnet Ireland, along with Research Ireland, the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science; Connecting Women in Technology; the 30% Club; CASTel and Intel. The initiative provides primary and post-primary teachers with paid summer internships in STEM roles, in a wide variety of industries across Ireland. It helps student and early-career teachers gain real-world insights and equips them with the knowledge of what it is like to work in STEM in Ireland right now. Dr Eilish McLoughlin, Associate Professor DCU School of Physical Sciences and founder of the STInt programme said: "Encouraging young people, particularly female students, to engage in STEM from an early age is crucial for inspiring them to pursue future careers in Ireland's growing science and tech sectors. Over the past decade, the STInt programme has provided unique opportunities to over 310 teachers to experience STEM roles and careers and empower them to design innovative learning experiences for young learners based on real-world contexts. More STEM graduates are needed to tackle societal challenges, such as, climate change, energy, health and issues we have yet to imagine. Organisations and businesses are strongly encouraged to collaborate with the STInt programme and help shape a brighter future for individuals and societies." Skillnet Ireland, the national talent development agency, has been a programme partner since 2023, providing support for the STInt programme to contribute to a lasting impact on the future workforce. Tracey Donnery, Director of Policy & Communications at Skillnet Ireland, said: "The mission of the STInt programme reflects Skillnet Ireland's commitment to building a diverse and highly skilled STEM workforce that will drive Ireland's future economy. With industries like biotechnology, engineering, and AI shaping the country's economy, empowering young people in STEM ensures a more inclusive, competitive workforce and inspires the next generation of leaders and innovators." The UN is dedicating International Women's Day 2025 to a call for action that can unlock equal rights, power and opportunities for all women. Central to this vision is empowering the next generation -particularly young women and adolescent girls - to act as catalysts for lasting change. Celine Fitzgerald, Interim CEO of Research Ireland, said: "We are delighted to support STInt through the Research Ireland Discover Programme, providing teachers across both primary and post-primary education with the unique experience of a STEM internship in industry. These internships empower teachers to design innovative and engaging STEM learning experiences, showing students the value of STEM in real-world contexts. Collaborations between education, research and industry are vital to inspire young learners to engage with STEM and to provide them with the skills they need to adapt to our rapidly changing world." Communications services provider BT is one of a number of leading businesses that have hosted STInt interns over the last decade. Trudi Brook, Service Enablement Senior Manager at BT, said: "I love that through us sharing a view of what it is like to be part of a tech company with a STInt intern, the teachers get real-world insights that they go on and share with their pupils. It is always refreshing and ins...

In a recent episode of Category Visionaries, I sat down with Steffen Vollert, Co-Founder and Interim CEO of Volt, to explore their journey building a global real-time payment network. With over $87 Million in funding, Volt has evolved from a European open banking solution to a worldwide payment infrastructure platform, connecting major payment systems like Pix in Brazil and PayTo in Australia. Beyond his role at Volt, Steffen shared an unexpected side venture - a vintage tractor restoration business that provides a therapeutic counterbalance to the digital world of fintech. Topics Discussed: Evolution from European open banking to global real-time payments The transition through different leadership roles (CTO, COO, CEO) Early product market fit challenges and iterations Strategic focus on PSPs and enterprise customers The impact of COVID on early company formation Building marketing and sales teams in fintech Fundraising journey through multiple rounds Organizational scaling beyond 150 employees GTM Lessons For B2B Founders: Speed to MVP Beats Infrastructure: Volt launched their initial prototype in just six months, compared to the industry standard of 2-3 years. Steffen explained, "We really focused on what is the fastest path to deliver something that has enough value for a merchants who actually put us on their checkout as a payment option." B2B founders should prioritize delivering core value quickly over building perfect infrastructure. Vertical Focus Drives Team Success: The team discovered that sales and marketing professionals in payments are highly specialized by vertical. Steffen noted, "Many salespeople in the industry are so specialized, they really join companies with a focus for their vertical where they have their network." B2B founders should commit to specific verticals long-term to attract and retain top talent. Product Market Fit is Continuous: Rather than a single moment, Volt experienced multiple "false" product market fits before achieving true traction. Steffen shared, "Every product advantage nowadays is temporary. You always need to be fast, you always need to be scrappy, you always need to think ahead." B2B founders should view product market fit as an ongoing process rather than a destination. Strategic Channel Selection: Volt deliberately chose to focus on large PSPs as distribution partners rather than pursuing SMEs directly. Steffen explained, "We really want to focus our resources on where we can move the needle for our revenue impact." B2B founders should evaluate distribution channels based on internal efficiency and resource constraints. Investment Partner Alignment: During fundraising, Volt prioritized investors who deeply understood their space over pure capital. Steffen emphasized, "For us it was much more important than the money itself... having partners on the other side to understand what we build, why we build it, why it's tough, why it's not going to be a straight line." B2B founders should seek investors who truly understand their market dynamics and challenges.   //   Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe.  www.GlobalTalent.co

Terrell is part of a group that will be lobbying the mayor to appoint a sustainable development expert to the board of the nascent Louisville Economic Development Alliance (LEDA). As it stands, the LEDA board has no one of that description. Basically it's a big “Business As Usual” group. Terrrell briefs us on his meeting this past Thursday with Pat Malloy, Interim CEO of LEDA. We also have a robust discussion of how sustainable development is different from the common understanding of sustainability. And we share the good news that Louisville Metro Government, through its Office of Sustainability, has just published a Request For Proposals to assist in the development of a Louisville Green Bank. This important effort will better position Metro to meet its established goals of 100% clean energy and net zero greenhouse gas emissions community-wide by 2040, advance equity and environmental justice, mobilize private capital towards environmental goals, and receive and distribute funding through the federal Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund. There will be a Q&A session on Thursday, November 21st at 11am online, with proposals due December 11.
