In this episode, Catherine Clark, GrowCFO Mentor, reframes influence as the practical outcome of deliberate connection. She and host Kevin Appleby unpack how remote and hybrid work have thinned everyday rapport, making it harder for finance leaders to shape decisions, mobilize teams, and retain talent. Their premise is simple: influence compounds when CFOs intentionally build trust, recognition, and emotionally intelligent dialogue across stakeholders. Catherine offers a playbook for finance leaders to operationalize connection: stakeholder mapping early and often, creating unstructured time for human conversation, signaling appreciation consistently, and showing up with presence—even through a screen. The episode highlights how small, repeated behaviors (gratitude, active listening, regular check-ins) turn into strategic leverage: faster alignment, better decision inclusion, higher engagement, and materially improved performance environments for finance teams and their partners. Key topics covered: Why remote/hybrid erodes spontaneous trust, and how CFOs can rebuild it with intentional routines Stakeholder mapping and early relationship-building as core influence mechanics, not “nice to haves Recognition and gratitude as low-cost, high-impact leadership signals that boost engagement and retention Emotional connection and presence (active listening, curiosity) driving performance and decision quality Practical cadence: unstructured touchpoints, pre-alignment conversations, and regular reconnection rituals Cultivating a culture of connection—small, repeatable behaviors that scale influence across the organization Links Catherine Clark on LinkedIn Kevin Appleby on LinkedIn GrowCFO Mentoring Timestamps 04:14 Remote/hybrid realities: the connection gap and its impact on leadership/retention 12:00 Relationship strategy: stakeholder mapping and early outreach to accelerate trust 27:42 Recognition and gratitude as influence multipliers 35:31 Emotional connection, interference removal, and performance outcomes 44:48 Building an organizational culture of connection and shared values 46:37 Final actions: small, consistent behaviors that compound into influence Find out more about GrowCFO If you enjoyed this podcast, you can subscribe to the GrowCFO Show with your favorite podcast app. The GrowCFO show is listed in the Apple podcast directory, Spotify and many others. 70 Miles for a Mentor? Mary walked 70 miles just to connect with Elizabeth. Stop waiting for affirmation—find the woman who will empower the miracle you're carrying. This is how women raise up women. —Elaine LankfordSHOW NOTES EPISODES HIGHLIGHTS The Power of Divine Interruption: God will intentionally disrupt a comfortable, successful life (e.g., job loss, family illness) to save you and redirect your focus when your centeredness on Christ has shifted. Flipping the Hurt: To overcome hurt, one must dig deep into why the hurt occurred (the "turt turt"). When you concentrate on the path God has set you on, the bitterness of past rejection lessens. Daughtership is Divine Authority: The most empowering truth is understanding the Sonship/Daughtership mandate: You are the head and not the tail, above and not beneath. This instant shift in focus moves women from feeling unqualified to operating in divine authority. The Elizabeth and Mary Model: This biblical narrative illustrates the power of female connection. Mary was prophesied over, empowered, and encouraged by Elizabeth, who helped her prepare for the miracle inside her. This is the model for women pulling up women and validating the God-sized dream in each other's "womb." "When you can take that pain and flip it on its head and use it for the greater good, that's when we find our purpose. Nothing is ever wasted." —Elaine Lankford

What does it really mean to take faith-filled risks in your beauty business? In this powerful, deeply spiritual, and wisdom-packed episode, Sheila Bella sits down with Carolyn Cyprian, medical esthetician, multi–med spa owner, coach, and founder of Carolyn Skincare. Together, they unpack the true meaning behind the phrase "Scared money makes no money." For faith-driven entrepreneurs, success isn't just about financial gain — it's about stewardship, obedience, identity, and learning to trust God with every decision, even the ones that cost you something. Carolyn shares her raw journey through betrayal, rebuilding her team, restructuring her business, and walking through a season of financial drought that reshaped her relationship with money forever. Her story will stretch your faith, challenge your fears, and remind you that surrendered money multiplies. If you've been sitting on a decision, procrastinating out of fear, or praying for clarity about your next move… this episode is your confirmation. 5 Key Points Discussed in This Episode 1. The Difference Between Reckless Risk vs. Righteous Risk Carolyn and Sheila explore how faith-led decisions feel different from impulsive ones — and how God uses discomfort (not chaos) to grow you. 2. Healing Your Relationship With Money Carolyn shares how generational scarcity, childhood beliefs, and inherited fears shaped her financial mindset — and how God led her through a 3-month drought to break those patterns. 3. Hiring, Betrayal & Surrendering Your Business to God They discuss the emotional cost of building a team, why betrayal is often part of leadership, and how to hire slowly, fire fast, and trust God to send the right people. 4. Sales as Ministry: Selling Without Shame Sales isn't "selling" — it's serving. Carolyn explains how she teaches her team to view sales as a mutual exchange and an opportunity to help people. 5. Discernment, Peace & Making Big Decisions They clarify the difference between fear and lack of peace, how to pray for signs and revelation, and why obedience often requires discomfort but never confusion. In this episode, we reflect on the importance of giving thanks to the Lord for all He has done in both the beautiful and difficult moments of life. We talk about how practicing gratitude can change our perspective of reality and helps us recognize where God has been present even in moments we do not understand. We also name the fears that can sometimes keep us from giving thanks and discuss how gratitude becomes an act of surrender that opens us to God's steady, faithful presence. As a gift to you, we end today's episode by doing Lectio Divina with Psalm 34 and invite you into a time of prayer with us. How did the Lord accompany me this year? What do I need to let go of as we transition into a new liturgical year? What parts of my life am I afraid to give thanks for? Discussion Questions: What has the Lord taught you in this season? What was surprising this past year? What challenges and joys did you experience this year? Where are you resistant to give thanks? Quote to Ponder: "Gratitude is at the center of a life of faith. It sounds too simple to be true, but isn't that the sign of all deep truth: so simple we're tempted to dismiss it, and so hard, it is exactly what God uses to change our hard lives." (Ann Voskamp) Scripture for Lectio: "I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. Look to him, and be radiant; so your faces shall never be ashamed. This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord, and was saved from every trouble. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him." This week at ease, Dave Henderson joins the table for a gentle, unexpected conversation about legacy, family, and all the invisible work that holds us up. Dave spent decades building medical offices across California, but really, he was building something deeper: trust, consistency, and a community within his business. In this episode, we talk about why jobs aren't forever, why success has to come from within, and how your job isn't your purpose. Dave opens up about carrying a family business, leading quietly, navigating early failures, and the moment he realized that real purpose isn't found in titles but in how you show up for people. We explore what it means to build a legacy you're proud of, how structure can be healing, and why the strongest foundations are often the ones no one sees. Dave also shares how he's learning to pass down more than just a business. He's passing down intention, integrity, and promise. It's an episode about presence, pressure, and choosing to lead with heart, even when no one's watching. Unpredictable cycles. Sleepless nights. Mood swings. Body composition changes. And performance that mirrors all of it. During the menopause transition, you never quite know which body will show up on any given day. As this week's guest menopause run and strength coach Becky Croft explains, you can still get stronger and faster, but it won't come from constantly pushing through or grinding it out. It takes smart planning, a different kind of periodization, and recovery that respects your shifting hormones and the cumulative stress that comes from this time of life. We dive into all of it: hormones, nutrition, hydration, strength, load management, and much more. Becky also opens up about her struggles with endometriosis, surgical menopause, and younger women in menopause can feel left out of the conversation.Becky Croft is a certified running and strength coach who specializes in guiding masters and menopausal athletes through the complex intersections of performance, hormones, and identity. After years of battling endometriosis and undergoing a full hysterectomy at 38, Becky entered surgical menopause as a younger, recreational competitive athlete—and quickly realized the resources she needed didn't exist. So she became the coach she was looking for. She is a Game Changers Coach and Mentor, holds certifications as a RRCA Run Coach, Girls Gone Strong Menopause Strength Coach, and Chi Running & Walking Instructor. The Purge by a Novel and Mao's Fear of Revisionism. Joseph Turigian explains that Xi Zhongxun's 1962 downfall stemmed from supporting the publication of a fictionalized biography of his deceased mentor, Liu Zhidan. Mao Zedong saw the novel as a counter-revolutionary plot and a manifestation of revisionism, fearing that others would claim credit for leading the revolution. Mao aimed to transform persecuted individuals through humiliation and torment, unlike Stalinist purges, which emphasized execution. Xi Zhongxun was brutally kidnapped by Red Guards in 1967 and subjected to struggle sessions as Mao sought to continuously "rebaptize" the party in revolutionary spirit. “My biggest thing has been remembering that I'm not Dathan, I'm not Kelsey, but that's why I was hired. The three of us all have very different experiences, we bring different things to the table, and we're just hoping to give the athletes this well-roundedness in support and resources... That's the really cool part about what OAC is doing. We're trying to help this next wave of incredible athletes maximize what they're capable of and it's okay that we all do that differently.”My guest for today's episode is Laura Thweatt, the former professional marathoner who has now stepped into an assistant coach role and is helping oversee the roads team with the On Athletics Club. For 13 years, Laura was a steady coaching presence for high school runners in Boulde and now she's made the jump to guide the likes of 2025 New York City Marathon champion Hellen Obiri and has also helped Joe Klecker navigate the transition from the track to 26.2.Laura is someone who understands the emotional and psychological side of performance.
