Why Do So Many Mentorship Relationships Fail Before They Ever Work? “You can't be more committed to somebody's success than they are.” That insight comes from Colleen Stanley, author of Be the Mentor Who Mattered, during a recent conversation on the Sales Gravy Podcast. It's a simple statement that cuts through all the noise about mentorship and gets to the heart of why most mentoring relationships fail to deliver results. Sales professionals constantly talk about wanting mentors. They want access to someone who's been there, done that, and can show them the shortcuts. But when they get that access, they squander it. They show up unprepared. They argue with advice. They never implement what they learn. On the flip side, experienced sales leaders say they want to give back and mentor the next generation. But they get burned out after investing time in people who don't follow through. So they stop offering help altogether. The problem isn't a lack of willing mentors or eager mentees. The problem is that nobody understands their role in making mentorship work. What Mentees Get Wrong About Mentorship Most people treat mentorship like a magic pill, assuming that simply being near someone successful will transfer that success to them. It doesn't work that way. Getting real value from a mentor requires more than just showing up. You need to actively do the work that makes their guidance worthwhile. Start by focusing on these key actions: Ask Directly The biggest barrier to mentorship isn't that successful people won't help you. It's that you never ask. You assume they're too busy, too important, or too far removed from your situation to care. You're wrong on all three counts. Successful people got where they are because someone helped them along the way. Most of them want to pay that forward. But they're not mind readers. If you want help, ask for it directly. Respect Their Time When you do ask, come prepared. Don't ask for “15 minutes to pick your brain.” That's code for “I haven't thought about what I actually need, so I'm going to waste your time figuring it out.” Instead, be specific. “I'm struggling with qualifying early in the sales process. Could you share how you approach qualification conversations?” Specific questions get specific answers. Vague requests get vague responses—or none at all. Do What They Tell You to Do This is where most mentoring relationships die. You ask for advice. You get great guidance. Then you come back with a list of reasons why it won't work for your situation. Stop that. If you're going to ask someone for their expertise, try their approach before explaining why your situation is different. You're there because they know more than you do. Acting like you know better defeats the entire purpose. Your mentor's reward isn't money or recognition. It's watching you take their advice and succeed because of it. When you implement what they teach and come back with results, they'll invest even more in your development. When you make excuses, they'll move on. Take Tough Feedback Without Getting Defensive Not every mentor has read the latest book on constructive feedback. Some of them are direct or blunt. Take it anyway. When someone cares enough about your success to tell you the truth—even when it's uncomfortable—that's a gift. Don't reject it because it wasn't wrapped perfectly. The best mentors don't sugarcoat feedback because they respect you enough to be honest. They see potential in you that you can't see yet, and they're not going to let you waste it by staying comfortable. What Mentors Get Wrong About Mentorship If you're in a position to mentor others, you already know the frustration of investing in someone who doesn't follow through. It's exhausting. Eventually, you start to wonder if it's worth your time at all. Before you close yourself off completely, it's important to understand the common patterns that cause mentoring relationships to stall. Waiting for the Perfect Mentee There is no perfect mentee. Everyone who asks for your help is going to be rough around the edges. They'll make mistakes. They might waste some of your time. That's the cost of mentoring. The real question isn't whether someone is polished. It's whether they're committed. Are they showing up prepared? Are they implementing what you teach? Are they making progress, even if it's slow? If the answer is yes, keep investing. If it's no, redirect your energy elsewhere. Just don't let one bad experience make you cynical about everyone. Trying to Control Their Path Your job as a mentor isn't to create a clone of yourself. It's to help someone develop their own approach using the principles that made you successful. They might take your advice and apply it differently. They might adapt it to their personality, their market, or their selling style. That's not wrong. That's the point. Stay unattached to the outcome. You can't be more invested in their success than they are. Give them your best insights, support their growth, and let them own the results. Mentoring the Wrong People Not everyone needs your specific expertise. Some people need tactical help with prospecting. Some need strategic guidance. Others need coaching on emotional intelligence. Look for the multipliers. Mentor people who will take what you teach them and use it to help others. When someone you mentor goes on to mentor others, your impact grows far beyond what you could achieve alone. That doesn't mean only mentoring future executives. It means finding people who are genuinely committed to growth and generous enough to share what they learn. The Real Value of Mentorship Mentorship isn't a transaction. It's not about what you can get from someone more successful or what you owe someone less experienced. It's about creating a community where people help each other get better. Where progress matters more than perfection. Where tough feedback is welcomed because everyone knows it comes from a place of care. Having someone in your corner who believes in your potential—even when you don't—can be the difference between quitting and breaking through. But that only works if both sides understand their role. Mentees must show up ready to learn and willing to act. Mentors must show up ready to tell the truth and willing to invest. Find the mentors who will challenge you. Be the mentor who changes someone else's trajectory. Ready to take the next step in your development? Finding the right mentor or coach can transform your sales career—if you know what to look for. In episode 220, host Galit Friedlander and guest Chad Geiger (dance agent at The Movement Talent Agency) pull back the curtain on what representation really looks like from the agency side and what dancers often misunderstand about it. We talk about essential pieces of a sustainable dance career: communication, contracts, headshots and resumes that actually serve you, and how your choices off the floor impact your opportunities just as much as your training on it. Chad shares insight on navigating direct bookings, building trust with your team, and why “doing the basics well” is still one of the biggest differentiators in today's industry. When a kid pulling golf balls out of ponds grows up to build one of the most influential platforms in podcasting, you know there's a story worth hearing. In this episode, I'm joined by Alex Sanfilippo, founder of PodMatch and host of Podcasting Made Simple. We talk about his journey from the aerospace world to faith-based blogging and podcasting, to launching PodMatch in 2020 and watching it explode just as the world went into lockdown. Alex shares how a simple idea – “like a dating app, but for podcast interviews” – became a global tool that helps hosts find the right guests and guests find the right stages. We also dig into why Alex gives half of PodMatch's profit back to podcasters through the PodValue initiative, what most hosts get wrong about sharing links to their shows, and how he's building features like a built-in Workflow and review swaps to help podcasters grow sustainably. If you host a podcast, dream of starting one, or just love a good entrepreneurship story rooted in service and integrity, this conversation will encourage you to keep creating, keep connecting, and keep the conversations going.Send us a textFreedom Federal Credit UnionHELPING YOU REACH YOUR FINANCIAL DREAMSDisclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. As we move into 2026, The Building Better Humans Project is refocusing—by going back to where it all began. In this episode, Glenn Azar shares an honest update on the future direction of the podcast and why now is the right time to return to the show’s roots: unapologetic, no-BS personal and professional development across all the areas of life where people feel stuck, challenged, or overwhelmed. Glenn also addresses the decision to step away from Mayhem Monday as a regular segment. While it was enjoyed by many, consistency, integrity, and capacity matter—and this episode explains why doing fewer things better is essential for long-term growth, both personally and professionally. With over 11 years of podcasting and 1,500+ episodes, this show remains a free, consistent anchor in a crowded personal development space—focused on mindset, discipline, responsibility, leadership, and real-world application. Mayhem sessions may still appear from time to time as bonus episodes, but the core mission is clear:Three episodes a week. Real conversations. Practical tools. No hype. If you’re looking to reset, refocus, and get back to the work that actually matters—this episode sets the tone for what’s ahead. https://vimeo.com/1136707863?share=copy&fl=sv&fe=ci We've heard a lot about what doesn't work for us as women with the Me Too Movement and toxic masculinity and the recent Epstein Files, and we know what doesn't work for us as well. But do we know what does? And today's guest is gonna talk about relational masculinity as the next frontier beyond toxic masculinity. It's a beautiful conversation with GS Youngblood, and I welcome you to join us to find out more. GS Youngblood has been studying the dynamics of relationship and polarity for over 17 years. He has found that most relationship problems are a result of a lack of masculine leadership. GS Youngblood offers live training workshops to help men stop settling for a flat, contentious or toxic relationship. FREE GIFT: MIR Toolkit https://www.gsyoungblood.com/toolkit GS YOUNGBLOOD BIO GS Youngblood is the acclaimed author of the groundbreaking book “The Masculine in Relationship”, which challenges the modern notion that all Masculinity is toxic by offering a model - the Masculine Blueprint - for men to become grounded in their own power and more relational with their Feminine partner. The Blueprint is something any man can embody, and it fits in our modern #MeToo culture without being watered down in any way. The premise of his work is that many relationship problems are actually rooted in a lack of Relational Masculinity - which is a combination of groundedness, leadership, and relational skills. This is what he teaches to men. His two books have sold nearly a combined 90,000 copies, and he has become a highly sought-after men's coach. GS's work draws inspiration from various disciplines, including psychology, men's work, spirituality, martial arts, tango, meditation, and BDSM. A MODERN MAGAZINE EDITOR IN A POST-MAGAZINE WORLD—In the media storm that is 2025, the person you want captaining your ship is smart, decisive, and cool, calm, and collected—in other words, she's Nikki Ogunnaike. The editor-in-chief of Marie Claire, whom we got to know when we worked together at Elle, is the very model of a modern magazine editor, in that—unlike the lifers of old—she hopscotched through a ton of jobs, accruing skills as a writer, a fashion editor, a digital editor and a print editor, and, oh yeah, a social-media savvy multi-platform operator—to become what she is now: someone uniquely equipped to lead a new era of Marie Claire. We talked to Nikki about what it's like to run a modern media brand in a post-magazine world—what does the job of “magazine editor” even mean now? Also: how is the post-Hearst Marie Claire evolving to meet a new reader, or should we say “follower,” and which parts of its original DNA Nikki is working to preserve. You don't need to budget to get ahead financially, you just need to change the way you think about money. In this episode of the Registered Investment Advisor Podcast, Seth Greene interviews Lisa Chastain, Money Coach, Mentor, and Unshakeable Optimist, who shares her journey from a single mom struggling in a tough spot to building a six-figure business in just 10 months. Lisa talks about how emotions drive money decisions and why addressing your unconscious beliefs around money is crucial for success. She explains why traditional budgeting doesn't work, offering a transformative approach to managing finances that starts with shifting your mindset, not restricting your spending. Key Takeaways: → How addressing emotional beliefs about money is the first step to financial success. → Why financial habits are often rooted in childhood experiences. → How it's important to uncover how early memories around money shape your decisions today. → How high net-worth individuals create and manage cash flow to allow for more freedom. → Why traditional budgeting restricts people and doesn't lead to long-term wealth. Lisa Chastain is a Personal Finance Coach with over 20 years of experience offering independent financial advice to executives, professionals, and business owners. She has been featured in Cosmopolitan, CNBC, NBC News, MSN Money, O – The Oprah Magazine, Fortune, Forbes, Business Insider, Business Newsweek, and Entrepreneur Magazine, and is one of Las Vegas Women Magazine's people to watch. A best-selling author, Lisa is also the host of the Real Money radio show on VoiceAmerica, the second-largest online radio broadcaster in the nation, with over 3 million listeners. After burning through $100,000 and nearly going completely broke, Lisa was forced to reinvent herself. Her aspiration wasn't to own a mansion or drive a Ferrari; she wanted simple things, like so many of the women she now works with, such as savings, retirement funds, and a secure future for her family. Put plainly, she didn't want to have to stress about money any longer. In 2016, Lisa applied what she had learned and launched her business as a money coach, with a mission to help women manage their finances effectively without a budget, enabling them to live their best lives. She has now helped countless clients learn how to track their expenses without budgets, invest wisely, and make informed financial decisions, enabling them to escape the financial rollercoaster and achieve long-term stability. In "Optimize Speed to Revenue", Joe Lynch and Wes Arentson, Senior Sales Manager, Logistics at SPS Commerce, discuss how streamlining the supply chain's Order-to-Cash cycle is the key to accelerating business growth. About Wes Aretson Wes Arentson is a dedicated Senior Sales Manager, Logistics at SPS Commerce, empowering retail supply chains through innovative technology solutions. He is a recognized logistics sales leader with a strong track record of success at SPS Commerce, having consistently exceeded quota and earned prestigious honors like the Eagle Award and President's Club. At the core of his work is a deep commitment to the 3PL community, where he focuses on building strategic partnerships and enabling clients to better manage data and streamline operations using SPS Commerce's industry-leading technologies. Beyond driving sales success, Wes is a passionate Sales Coach and Mentor. He leads high-performing teams—including managing a team of 10 representatives across the U.S.—by fostering a culture of continuous learning and accountability. His leadership philosophy is focused on building strong relationships and delivering measurable results. Wes is also highly engaged in the industry, having served as a President and Board Member for the CSCMP Twin Cities Roundtable for over a decade. He holds a BA in English and Communication Studies from the University of Minnesota. He specializes in connecting world-class technology with the senior executives who control budget and strategy. About SPS Commerce SPS Commerce is the world's leading retail network, connecting trading partners across the globe to optimize supply chain operations for all stakeholders in the retail ecosystem. The company enables data-driven partnerships through innovative cloud-based technology, customer-centric service, and a team of accessible industry experts—allowing clients to focus on their core business. With over 45,000 recurring revenue customers spanning retail, grocery, distribution, supply, manufacturing, and logistics, SPS Commerce powers a vast and growing global retail network. Key Takeaways: Optimize Speed to Revenue In "Optimize Speed to Revenue", Joe Lynch and Wes Arentson, Senior Sales Manager, Logistics at SPS Commerce, discuss how streamlining the supply chain's Order-to-Cash cycle is the key to accelerating business growth. Direct Correlation: Order-to-Cash Speed = Revenue Acceleration. The single most critical factor in optimizing revenue is the speed of your Order-to-Cash (O2C) cycle. Wes stresses that every inefficiency in processing orders, from receipt to payment, translates directly into delayed revenue. Streamlining O2C with efficient data exchange is the fastest way to pull cash forward. Stop Margin Leaks by Eliminating Disconnected Systems. Learn how disjointed or manual systems create costly margin leaks—the silent erosion of profitability. These leaks are often caused by the lack of connection between trading partner portals, forcing manual data re-entry and increasing the risk of chargebacks and penalties. EDI as the Foundation for Impeccable Data Quality. At the core of SPS Commerce's success is the commitment to data quality. Listeners will understand that clean, standardized, and automated data transmission via modern EDI is essential not just for compliance, but for enabling accurate forecasting and preventing operational errors for all SPS Commerce customers. Master Retailer Scorecards by Fixing Data Exchange. Achieving and exceeding Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs)—the foundation of retailer scorecards and milestones—is non-negotiable. Wes explains that a failure to meet these standards is often a symptom of poor EDI connections or the lack thereof, not operational failure. Automated, accurate EDI is the fix. Accelerate Onboarding with Proven Compliance and Security. Wes highlights the comprehensive service offered by SPS Commerce, focusing on mapping, testing, compliance, and security. This end-to-end approach drastically shaves weeks off the process of onboarding new trading partners, ensuring systems are instantly compliant and secure, which minimizes risk and accelerates time-to-revenue. The EDI Advantage: Consolidate Portals and Win More Tenders. True efficiency moves beyond basic EDI compliance. By consolidating disparate retailer portals into one platform, you eliminate the "swivel-chair" chaos. This improved efficiency and performance not only stops margin leaks but directly improves your scorecard performance, helping you win more high-value tenders. Future-Proof Partnerships with Automated Data Strategy. The conversation culminates in the shift from tactical order management to a strategic, data-driven approach. Wes advocates for using centralized EDI to build continuous learning and accountability, allowing companies to focus less on manual data work and more on connecting world-class technology with senior executives who control budget and strategy. Heidi held conversations with teachers in part about how effective and powerful the Pilates Method is especially beyond the studio. But in today's environment with social media as the dominant connector, what's been revealed is an ugly truth about the Pilates profession. Many teachers instead of being supportive and encouraging, diminish their peers and worse, many are bullied.
