The Articulate Fly
S8, Ep 38: High Water and Transitional Fish: Matt Reilly's Southwest Virginia Fishing Insights

The Articulate Fly

Episode OverviewIn this Southwest Virginia Fishing Report on The Articulate Fly fly fishing podcast, host Marvin Cash checks in with guide Matt Reilly of Matt Reilly Fly Fishing for a candid late-spring conditions update covering the post-spawn transition, dirty water tactics and the seasonal arc ahead. Recorded amid rising, stained flows on the New River and surrounding drainages — following months of below-average flows — the episode captures a moment when Southwest Virginia smallmouth fishing is firmly in between patterns, and angler adaptability is the only reliable edge. Reilly addresses the dual pressure facing anglers right now: a post-spawn funk settling over fish on some waters while others remain slightly earlier in that arc, and high, off-color water shrinking reactive distances and pushing fish to the bottom. He details how an early crayfish molt — triggered by unusually warm water temps in the low-to-mid 70s weeks ahead of schedule — has shifted his focus away from streamer presentations and toward bottom-contact crayfish patterns on fish that are otherwise visible but unmovable on top. Reilly also previews the seasonal calendar ahead, sketching the transition through a late-May/June baitfish bite, crayfish activity and eventually the cleaner, lower-water conditions that make topwater the dominant game — typically not until around the Fourth of July. Guide availability closes the episode, with Reilly noting his summer calendar is fully booked and early October representing the next realistic opportunity for prospective clients.Key TakeawaysHow to identify the post-spawn funk by its signature symptom: cycling rapidly through multiple fly types with sporadic, pattern-less catches. Why bottom-contact crayfish patterns outperform streamers and topwater when smallmouth are locked down during an early crayfish molt. How to approach high, stained water when flows are elevated but not extreme — targeting the bottom rather than automatically moving to the banks, because fish can spread across mid-river structure when current isn't pushing them to the edges. Why an early summer crayfish molt can pull even cruising, visible fish away from topwater presentations and onto gravel-bar bottom feeding. When to expect the seasonal transition to more consistent patterns: a late-May/June baitfish bite followed by bug-fishing conditions that typically don't fully materialize until around the Fourth of July.Techniques & Gear CoveredReilly runs multiple rods in the boat simultaneously — a floating line with a topwater bug, an intermediate-tip with a streamer and a floater rigged with a crayfish — to rotate through presentations efficiently when no single pattern dominates. In dirty, elevated water he emphasizes making bottom contact as the primary directive, noting that smallmouth research documents a behavioral shift toward bottom-oriented hunting when turbidity increases. Crayfish patterns are the anchor of his current program given the early molt activity, with darker, high-contrast and flashier fly choices appropriate for off-color conditions. Streamer fishing remains part of the rotation but Reilly is candid that listening to what the fish show you — even when it conflicts with your instinct — is the overriding tactical discipline during transitional windows.Locations & SpeciesThe episode centers on Southwest Virginia's river systems, with the New River specifically mentioned as the water Reilly was guiding on the day of recording. The New is described as deteriorating during the conversation — elevated and stained from recent rainfall — but holding up better than surrounding rivers that Reilly characterizes as borderline blown out. Smallmouth bass are the sole target species discussed. Conditions at time of recording include water temperatures already touching the mid-70s — well ahead of the typical early June arrival of such temps — and flow levels running significantly below seasonal averages for the year before recent rains, creating a compressed, accelerated seasonal arc that has pushed crayfish molt timing and post-spawn transitions out of seasonal norms.FAQ / Key Questions AnsweredHow do you know when you're in the post-spawn funk and what do you do about it?Reilly identifies the funk by a tell-tale pattern: you start with one fly, catch one fish, slow down, switch flies, catch another, slow down again, and end the day with six wet flies of five different types drying on the boat bag. When that's happening, he leans on instinct — reading the water type in front of him and putting his best guess forward — while staying honest about whether a presentation isn't working or just needs more time. He acknowledges it's sometimes simply tough and you have to grind through it.Why would you target the bottom in high, stained water rather than moving to the banks? When water is elevated but not high enough to concentrate fish in bank-side slack water, smallmouth can spread broadly across mid-river structure — and increased turbidity shrinks reactive distances significantly. Reilly points to behavioral research showing smallmouth shift to bottom-oriented hunting in dirty water. Getting a fly to the bottom gives fish a plane they can reliably relate to even when visibility is poor, and on the day of recording it was the only approach consistently producing. What triggers a crayfish molt and why does it pull fish off topwater?Early warm water — Reilly observed low-to-mid-70s temperatures weeks ahead of the typical mid- to late-June timing — accelerates crayfish shedding their shells, making them soft and highly vulnerable. Even smallmouth that would otherwise be ideal topwater candidates were cruising shallow gravel bars but locked to the bottom, unwilling to come up. Once you see that behavior, Reilly says you have to accept it and feed them crayfish regardless of how tempting topwater looks. When does consistent topwater fishing typically kick in for Southwest Virginia smallmouth?Reilly frames late May through mid-June as a transitional window featuring a baitfish bite (non-game fish like darters and chubs spawning, creating forage) interspersed with molting crayfish activity. Reliable topwater conditions — when it becomes the path-of-least-resistance strategy rather than just a fun option — typically don't arrive until water temperatures and flows settle in the summer, usually around the Fourth of July, assuming conditions don't remain abnormally low and clear even sooner. What does Matt Reilly's fall guide calendar look like, and what should you expect booking-wise?As of this recording Reilly's summer is fully booked, with early October being the next available window. He describes October as a mixed bag: possible hurricane-driven high water and strong streamer fishing, or a continuation of summer patterns depending on the year — but consistently a period when big fish show up in the first couple weeks before his focus shifts entirely to musky season.Related ContentS8, Ep 29 – Fishing in Flux: Matt Reilly's Take on Spring Trends and TechniquesS8, Ep 23 – Low Water Chronicles: Matt Reilly on Pre-Spawn Smallmouth Strategies and Seasonal ShiftsS6, Ep 112 – Smallmouth Transitions and Musky Prep: Matt Reilly's Southwest VA UpdateS6, Ep 71 – Adapting to Heat and Low Flows: A Southwest Virginia Fishing Report with Matt ReillyConnect with Our GuestFollow Matt on Instagram.Follow the ShowFollow The Articulate Fly on Facebook, Instagram, Threads and YouTube.Follow our Substack newsletter for episode updates, tips and resources.Support the ShowShop through our Amazon link to support the podcast.Join our Patreon community to support the show.If you are in the industry and need help getting unstuck, learn more about our

A transitional champion in wrestling is one that only holds the title for a short amount of time before they drop it to someone else. Typically it's a way to get the belt from one wrestler to another without them wrestling each other, or in cases where the title win is the most important part of the story as opposed to the actual reign itself. On this episode, Andrew and first-time guest Anthony Puhl (a.k.a. foolinc from the VOW Discord) look at bands who have had transitional bandmates, so to speak, where certain members are only in the group for a short amount of time. Artists played include The Clash, Thin Lizzy, Blink-182, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Depeche Mode, The Moody Blues, and many more. If people don't trust your judgment, they won't invest with you. If you don't understand the market, you will mistake motion for traction. If you build from ego instead of demand, the market eventually corrects you. Jose brings a sobering, practical perspective shaped by decades in Houston real estate. He explains why steadier end-user markets can outperform flashier speculative ones, why specialization matters more than people think, and why so many newcomers fail when they assume all real estate is the same. One of the strongest threads in this conversation is his insistence that real estate is not a shortcut business. It is cyclical, risky, technical, and unforgiving when approached casually. He also connects development directly to product-market fit, arguing that builders fail when they create for themselves rather than for the actual buyer. Are you spiraling because the narcissist replaced you with someone who feels like a massive "downgrade"?It's not about love; it's about logistics. As a self-aware narcissist, I'm explaining the concept of "Transitional Supply." This is the person we jump to out of pure necessity—because we need a place to stay, money for bills, or simply because we cannot stand to be alone with our own thoughts for five minutes.IN THIS LIVE, WE DISCUSS:The "Band-Aid" Supply: Why we choose someone who isn't our "type" just to fill a void.Convenience Over Connection: How housing, food, and financial stability dictate our next move. The "Palate Cleanser": Why we sometimes choose someone "easier" after a strong partner (Grade A) sets boundaries. The Lifespan of the Transition: Why these relationships usually burn out as soon as the narcissist gets back on their feet.Stop comparing yourself to the person who is just a temporary life raft.Connect with Lee:My Courses: https://courses.mentalhealness.net 1-on-1 Coaching Calls: https://link.me/mentalhealnessAll My Link: https://beacons.page/mentalhealness Follow on Instagram/TikTok: @mentalhealnesssIf this episode helped you gain clarity, please leave a 5-star review on Spotify! Episode 261: The Bittersweet Work of Transitional Ministry — Roger Sparks & Harv Roosma (Part 1)

The CRCNA is navigating a pastoral shortage, smaller candidate pools, and congregations that have been through enough upheaval that calling a new pastor straight away isn't always the right first move. This episode introduces the STM — the Specialized Transitional Minister — through two men who have made it their life's work: Roger Sparks and Harv Roosma. They want you to know something upfront: having an STM doesn't mean your church is a problem church. Roger came to the work through a painful door. After 34 years in Medicine Hat, Rock Valley, and Laverne, he'd watched churches go through messy separations as a synodical deputy — and gone through one himself. Harv arrived differently: a teacher turned pastor who spent 20 years on Vancouver Island before sensing that the churches he served had deeper needs he wasn't equipped to meet. Pastor-Church Relations pointed him toward STM in 2018. He's been doing it ever since. The structure is practical — a year-long commitment, first six months learning the church, second six months preparing the way for the next pastor. A priority list of 14-15 items gets narrowed to three or four. The training through the Interim Ministry Network is serious: church DNA, change dynamics, appreciative inquiry, moving a congregation from scarcity thinking to abundance thinking. But the phrase that captures the spirit of the whole thing is Harv's: we go in pre-fired. Your time is limited anyway. There's no fear. The job is to uncover what needs to be uncovered and love people well on the way out. **Timestamps:** - 0:00 — Intro - 1:08 — Roger Sparks: 34 years in Medicine Hat, Rock Valley, and Laverne - 3:00 — What drew Roger to STM: synodical deputy work and a painful church split - 5:19 — Harv Roosma: teacher to pastor, Vancouver Island to the Midwest - 7:41 — What led Harv to STM: sensing needs he didn't have tools to address - 8:02 — Jason: STMs aren't just for "problem churches" - 9:10 — The pastoral shortage and STM demand in the CRC - 12:08 — What a one-year STM commitment looks like - 13:22 — The 6-month model: learning the church, then preparing for the next pastor - 15:10 — The priority list: narrowing 14-15 items to 3-4 per church - 16:54 — When a church closes: walking a congregation through its death - 17:25 — STM training: the Interim Ministry Network - 19:09 — Tools: appreciative inquiry, asset mapping, scarcity to abundance thinking - 19:59 — The skills of the STM: avoiding triangulation, practicing differentiation - 21:37 — Annual conference and peer Zoom groups - 23:50 — The license to ask hard questions: what the STM invitation actually means - 25:44 — "We go in pre-fired" - 26:42 — Conversations that don't stay at surface level - 27:05 — The bittersweet: friendships formed and goodbyes Join and support us on Substack: https://themessyreformation.com/ Intro music by Matt Krotzer

Its All Greek Mythology to Me

Greek mythology has a way of cycling back. Every generation seems to take a turn with these stories, reshaping them to fit the tools and tastes of the moment. With a new version of The Odyssey directed by Christopher Nolan on the horizon, it feels like a good time to revisit a few earlier attempts. Not the definitive versions. Just four films that each capture a different moment in how the myths were staged.Jason and the ArgonautsDirected by Don Chaffey and brought to life by the stop motion work of Ray Harryhausen, this remains the standard for mythological adventure on film. The skeleton fight is still the showcase. Harryhausen animated seven sword fighting skeletons by hand, frame by frame, matching choreography that had already been filmed with live actors. It took months to complete just a few minutes of screen time. The patience shows. The movement has weight and timing that still feels precise. There is also Talos, the bronze giant, who creaks to life in a way that feels mechanical and ancient at the same time. No digital polish. Just careful craft. The film was not a major hit in 1963, but it built its reputation through television airings and revival screenings. Filmmakers like Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson have pointed to it as an influence.Clash of the TitansNearly twenty years later, Harryhausen returned for what would be his final feature. Released in 1981, the same summer as Raiders of the Lost Ark, it feels like a bridge between eras.Medusa is the standout. Instead of legs she has a serpentine body, and the sequence plays almost like a horror film, full of shadow and flickering light. Harryhausen again handled the creature effects himself, at a time when optical and early digital techniques were starting to change the industry. The cast gives the film a formal tone. Laurence Olivier plays Zeus and Maggie Smith appears as Thetis. There is also Bubo, the small mechanical owl added after the success of Star Wars. Even at the time some viewers were unsure about that addition. It says a lot about where fantasy films were headed in the early 1980s.HerculesDirected by Luigi Cozzi and starring Lou Ferrigno, this version of Hercules leans into spectacle in a way that is sometimes baffling and sometimes charming.Ferrigno had already been known for playing the Hulk on television, so casting him as Hercules made sense on a physical level. The film itself mixes Greek myth with science fiction imagery, including cosmic visuals and creatures that feel closer to Italian fantasy cinema than to Homer. It was part of a cycle of sword and sandal films in the early 1980s, many of them international co productions designed for global markets. The effects are uneven, but there is sincerity here. It commits to its vision without irony. The OdysseyDirected by Andrei Konchalovsky and starring Armand Assante, this two part television adaptation aired in 1997 as an event production. The format allows it to cover more of the journey than most feature films attempt. The Cyclops sequence and the Sirens episode stand out, helped by visual effects that were ambitious for network television at the time. The production won an Emmy for visual effects and reflects a brief period when large scale myth adaptations were being mounted for prime time audiences.Watching it now, you can see both its limits and its effort. It wants to treat the source material seriously, without reducing it to spectacle alone.Taken together, these films show how the same source material can shift with the era. Stop motion craft in the 1960s. Transitional fantasy in the early 1980s. International genre filmmaking. Large scale television in the 1990s.When Nolan releases his Odyssey, it will enter a long line of attempts to translate these myths into something contemporary. Revisiting these earlier versions is a way to see how each generation solved the same problem with different tools. They are worth tracking down. Not because they are perfect, but because each one reflects a moment when someone decided these ancient stories were still worth staging carefully. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! The Daily Boost | Coaching You Need. Success You Deserve.

Ever wonder why your career isn't landing? Why aren't clients finding you? Why do people keep getting you wrong? I've been having this conversation with clients every day. In our ambiguity-obsessed world, people think being unclear creates curiosity. It doesn't. It creates assumptions. If you don't label yourself clearly, others will do it for you. And whatever they decide will be outdated, incomplete, or wildly wrong. From my radio days learning to be a "morning guy" to watching AI reshape how the world sees us, labeling isn't about limiting yourself. It's about being found for what you actually do. Featured Story Years ago, when I was booking film crews, I'd get calls from people wanting work. I'd ask what they do, and I'd hear the answer I hated most: "Oh man, a little bit of everything actually." Yeah, I know you can do everything. That's how you get good at one thing. But what do you DO? Because I need to categorize you in my database. I need a label. Eventually, they'd tell me their dream job, usually cinematographer or lighting director. I'd put them in my system. Done. Easy. When I needed a lighting director, I'd pull up a list of lighting directors. Labels made them hirable. Ambiguity made them invisible. Important Points • Ambiguity doesn't create curiosity; it creates assumptions that put you in the wrong rooms with the wrong people. • Markets and humans both need clear signals to quickly understand who you are and where you fit in their world. • AI reads context now, amplifying what you actually do across the internet, whether you label yourself clearly or not. Memorable Quotes • "If you don't label yourself, the world will do it for you, and whatever they decide will be outdated or wrong." • "Labels aren't about limiting yourself, they're about being found for what you actually do and getting paid for it." • "Walk your label loudly and consistently every day because the world is picking up on what you're all about anyway." Scott's Three-Step Approach • Decide who you want to be, how you want to roll, your style, and commit to it without all the flexibility excuses. • Walk that talk loudly in front of everyone, every single day, so your actions consistently match what you say you are. • Let AI and the world amplify your authentic consistency instead of exposing the gap between your words and actions. Chapters 0:02 - Florida freeze and how locals dress for cold 2:01 - Why you must label yourself, or others will 3:01 - Chinese restaurants and simple labeling power 4:09 - My radio career and becoming the morning guy 8:22 - Transitional identities and behavior anchors 9:08 - AI context and why your marketing stopped working 12:53 - Walking your label loudly in the age of AI Connect With Me Search for the Daily Boost on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify Email: support@motivationtomove.com Main Website: https://motivationtomove.com YouTube: https://youtube.com/dailyboostpodcast Instagram: https://instagram.com/heyscottsmith Facebook Page: https://facebook.com/motivationtomove Facebook Group: https://dailyboostpodcast.com/facebook Learn more about your ad choices.
