We chat to Scottish independence campaigner Liam McLaughlan who we first came across when he stood as Scottish Socialist Party candidate for Glasgow East in the General election. Liam is a veteran of the legendary Radical Independence Campaign in 2014 and last month he gave the opening speech at a conference organised by left wing anti establishment group Conter to mark the 10 year anniversary of the independence referendum. We invited him into the studio to talk about the event, his experiences and his thoughts for the future campaign. With Westminster largely empty during the summer recess, host Aggie Chambre heads out of London to watch MPs in different parts of the country meet the people who really matter — the voters. At constituency surgeries in Glasgow East, Pontypridd and North Norfolk, Aggie watches politicians help desperate constituents who have nowhere else to turn, hearing heartbreaking stories of poverty as well as local rows about overgrown trees and NHS dentists. And on doorstep visits she sees them met by barking dogs, angry voters and even the occasional slammed door.Aided by Tory MP Duncan Baker, Labour MP Alex Davies-Jones and SNP MP David Linden, Aggie explores how the job of an MP has changed — and whether this is really the sort of work they should be carrying out at all. In conversation with David Linden MP. The Scottish people have returned a pro-independence majority of SNP and Green MSPs to the Scottish Parliament, providing the mandate for a new Independence Referendum. In this first episode of Scotland's Choice, Drew discusses what this result means for the Scottish people with David Linden, the Member of Parliament for Glasgow East and SNP Spokesperson for Work & Pensions. The election of a new Parliament in Edinburgh coincided with the Queen's speech outlining the new legislative priorities at Westminster, highlighting the sheer scale of the ever-widening gap between the priorities set in London and the values and wishes of the people of Scotland. In his contribution to the debate on the Queen's speech, David condemned the UK Government's failure to bring forward an Employment Bill, pointing out that this translates no meaningful action on the catalogue of employment areas that needs urgent address. There will be no answers to the “fire and re-hire” practices employed by several high profile companies and no action on the broken, sick pay system exposed by the pandemic or the fact that 1 out of 8 UK workers lives in poverty. Drew and David discuss the impact of these decisions. For more on David's work, visit www.davidlinden.scot Listen to other Scotland's Choice episodes here.
In the second part of the series on what MPs do away from Westminster, Mike Indian speaks to David Linden, MP for Glasgow East. This podcast answers the eternal question: what is a Scottish Nationalist's favourite English sitcom?
Welcome to East End Ears. I’m David Linden and this is the podcast for you if you live in Glasgow East. I’ll be bringing you regular short updates that you […]
Last June was an unusually nervous time for the SNP. Riding high in successive post-referendum elections, suddenly majorities were shaky and canvassers were finding life tough at some doorsteps where folk had grown concerned about a Brexit-related indyref2. David Linden was among those in new SNP seats – won in the euphoria of the 2015 UK election – with a lot to defend. The new candidate pulled through in Glasgow East, holding the seat by a squeaky majority of 75. A few months later he is scornful of Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson and her 13 Scottish MPs and their performance since Theresa May’s hopeless June campaign. So what now? How is life for a nationalist MP in the Commons as the Government party tears itself to shreds over Brexit? Linden arrived at Newsnet to discuss all this and more with our regular host Derek Bateman. And he is frank about what he perceives as weaknesses on the part of Scottish Labour leadership contenders, and the debate over Brexit itself. Asked about his role as an MP, he quotes the veteran nationalist parliamentarian Winnie Ewing: “We are there to settle up, not settle down.”
