#1004 | Ed and Tom look back on United's 0-0 draw at Sunderland, the first goalless game of the season. Casemiro's absence exposed how disjointed United look without him. With five mostly enforced changes, they discuss underwhelming displays from Mason Mount and Josh Zirkzee, limited attacking output from the full-backs, and United's lack of physicality. Once again, Senne Lammens came to United's rescue. What a signing he has been. With Champions League secured, and not much action on the pitch to talk about, the conversation turns to summer priorities - especially central midfield signings. The department is officially separating hundreds of Foreign Service officers who received reduction in force notices last summer. Ep. 391: Michael Lee Nirenberg on Cinematic Immunity, his new oral history about New York filmmaking crews Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. This week I go behind the scenes with filmmaker and author Michael Lee Nirenberg, whose new book Cinematic Immunity is an oral history of New York filmmaking of a different sort. Rather than directors or screenwriters, Nirenberg interviewed crew members across departments—and decades—to recount the making of movies like The French Connection and Do the Right Thing, shows like Pee-Wee's Playhouse and The Sopranos, and generally the ethos of working with Sidney Lumet or Spike Lee. As our conversation demonstrates, we were able to delve into stories and anecdotes that offer different perspectives and angles on film culture and the esprit de corps of studio filmmaking. “Cinematic Immunity: An Oral History of New York Filmmaking As Told by the Crews That Got the Shot” is available for purchase online and in bookstores. Also, the Frank Perry film that's mentioned, Last Summer (1969), is screening on May 3 at the Paris Theater. B.J. Lieberman grew up in Washington, D.C., and worked in restaurants up and down the East Coast before settling down in his wife's hometown of Columbus, Ohio. He had developed a reputation as a capable chef working at Husk in Charleston, S.C., under Sean Brock and running the kitchen at Rose's Luxury in D.C. In Columbus, he opened Chapman's Eat Market during the pandemic in 2020 and used the restrictions of the time to fine-tune his style. The restaurant was a success, being named one of the Top 50 Restaurants in America by The New York Times and crowned best restaurant in Columbus three years in a row by Columbus Underground. In 2022, Lieberman tried his hand at running a jazz lounge with the opening of Ginger Rabbit, contributing considerably to the nightlife scene in the city's Short North Arts District. Last Summer he opened Metsi's Wood-Fired Italian, also in the Short North, and shortly thereafter closed Chapman's once its five-year lease expired.Lieberman recently discussed his journey, his approach to cooking and his outlook on working while also raising a child and living his life. We're back with another Listener's Choice episode—this time courtesy of @Zombie__simon on Instagram. Huge thanks to Simon for the pick: I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998). With a violent storm cutting off all escape, Julie is forced to confront secrets she's kept buried. We break down the film's unique tropical setting, the big nasty storm, and what might be one of the dullest love triangles in horror history. Things are getting a little too hot this week on The Grave Plot Podcast. Before we dive into reviews, we kick things off with Horror Business, including a truly bizarre Real World Horror story involving a family who believe they've been cursed after an encounter with a mysterious holy man… followed by a series of unexplained fires. Whether it's supernatural, coincidence, or something far stranger, it's the kind of story that feels ripped straight out of a horror movie. From there, we run through a stacked batch of genre news, including the continued expansion of the Poohniverse, which is now barreling toward an all-out monster mash crossover. We also talk Mike Flanagan officially stepping into The Exorcist franchise, a sequel to the slasher Stream being penned by one of the Impractical Jokers, a Christmas-set Return of the Living Dead sequel shambling toward release, and Eli Roth teaming up with Snoop Dogg for a haunted house movie with a title that pretty much says it all. Then it's time for reviews. We revisit sun-drenched slasher nostalgia with 2025's I Know What You Did Last Summer, breaking down whether this legacy sequel earns its resurrection or should've stayed buried. After that, we close things out with Bring Her Back, a much darker and more intimate horror film that gives us plenty to chew on. So spark up your campfire stories, keep your cursed artifacts at arm's length, and join us for another fresh descent into madness with The Grave Plot Podcast!
A Little Greek, A Little Sci-Fi The final half of the list of 2025 book reviews has more Greek, more sci-fi, and more indiepub goodness. Romance in space and space opera, talking pigs and talking frogs, first contact with aliens and first contact with demons, and good church history hymns and bad biblical archeology. This week on the podcast, Patrick and Tracy welcome Emily Mitchell to talk about her new short story collection The Church of Divine Electricity. About The Church of Divine Electricity: Delightfully blending literary fiction with speculative genres, the stories in The Church of Divine Electricity somehow manage to feel as though they could take place today. In Emily Mitchell's created worlds, as in our own, technology bewitches, especially with its ability to heighten both connections and isolation. Whether being held by a giant and comforting machine, allowing micro-drones to record one's every moment for a year to win prize money, or choosing self-mutilation in exchange for a bionic hand, these characters navigate technological and social change. The familiar can turn unrecognizable and disorienting—sometimes in a flash, sometimes gradually. Lyrical, haunting, and often funny, these stories ask us to consider what—and who—gets left out of a seemingly utopian future of technological advancements. Finely observed, thoughtful, and vivid, Mitchell's stories get under your skin. It's not that the best-laid plans could lead us astray—it's that they may already have. About Emily Mitchell: Emily Mitchell grew up in London, England and moved to the United States as a teenager. She is the author of a novel, The Last Summer of the World (W. W. Norton, 2007), which was a finalist for the NYPL Young Lions Award, and two collections of short fiction, Viral (W. W. Norton, 2015) and The Church of Divine Electricity, winner of the 2023 Elixir Press Fiction Prize, forthcoming from University of Wisconsin Press in fall 2025. Her stories have appeared in Harpers', The Sun, The Southern Review, Alaska Quarterly Review, Prairie Schooner, The Missouri Review, American Short Fiction and elsewhere. Her nonfiction has appeared in the New York Times, the New Statesman (UK), Guernica and the Washington Independent Review of Books. She is the recipient of fellowships from Yaddo, the Ucross Foundation, the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, and Can Serrat International Artists Residency. She serves as fiction editor for New England Review and teaches at the University of Maryland. She lives just outside Washington DC with her husband, the writer and editor J. M. Tyree. We continue catching up with the legacy sequels from 2025 and are donning our hot slickers and hats to chat about I Know What You Did Last Summer. You'll hear what we think of the lead actors and characters and why they work for this film, why we think bringing back legacy actors from the original '97 hit was a good idea including the surprise ending that we both liked and how we believe that even when this movie is clumsy, it's not in a way to bother you too much, helping the movie to be an easy watch. Sarah and Lea from Investigating Angel join Steph and Kara to discuss the original 1997 slasher fic starring Sarah Michelle Gellar; Freddie Prinze, Jr.; Jennifer Love Hewitt; and Ryan Phillipe. Hear us discuss… How well the movie holds up SMG kinda steals the show The police in this town are deeply stupid OK, but we all agree these teens kind of deserved it, right? Well… someone's getting the hook for this one. Be warned: it's spoilers from minute one as we once again don our 4th of July finest to get mixed up in a mystery so underwhelming even the Scooby Gang won't spare a net or a beatnik stoner to help out. That's right, we're recalling our recent viewing of 2025's rebootiquel, I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, because you demanded it!! Folks, forget our quibbles with the original film because this reimagining is total fish bait. Along the way, we talk about evil civic planning, memorial tee-shirt ethics, mandatory character innocence, kink-shaming strolls, secret boyfriends, shirt allergies, dog complaints, middle-aged stabbing remorse, and a hook-filled edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! Summer. 1997. Four good-looking teens hit someone with their car and decide the best move is to dump the body and never talk about it again. A year later, surprise — someone knows what they did last summer. Cue the fisherman with a hook, a lot of screaming, and enough 90s angst to power a Dawson's Creek marathon. This is I Know What You Did Last Summer — where bad decisions, shiny hair, and slickers collide.
In the final week of Spooky Scary Movie Month, we're discussing I Still Know What You Did Last Summer! Kat and Jocelyn nitpick the film's title, talk about a plan so convoluted and expensive it would BANKRUPT the killer(s), and side-eye a moment where Jennifer Love Hewitt gets to sing... and Brandy doesn't. Produced by Andrew Ivimey as part of The From Superheroes Network Visit www.FromSuperheroes.com for more podcasts, articles, video series, web comics, and more.
Did you know that the classic 1997 slasher film I Know What You Did Last Summer was actually based on a propulsive young adult thriller from 1973? Lois Duncan's original novel isn't too interested in bloody kills, however. It's more focused on how young people build their identities: around their regrets, around their parents, and around tragedies. Our theme music was composed by Nick Lerangis.Follow @overduepod on Instagram and BlueskyAdvertise on OverdueSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Jennifer Love Hewitt is part of another doomed quartet of rising stars of the 90s getting terrorized by an omnipresent North Carolina fisherman out for even more justice because he still remembers what she did two summers ago. Brandy, Mehki Phifer and Matthew Settle join Julie James on the most convoluted all expenses paid trip from hell to the Bahamas while Freddie Prinze Jr does his own version of The Fugitive via bus, boat and time travel to try and save the day. Jennifer Esposito is an underutilized Nancy, Jack Black has dreads, and the entire staff of the hotel somehow get the worst end of the fish hook before Julie discovers why her new friend is named Will Benson….Become a Matreon at the Sister Mary level to get full access to Season 7 of Drag Race UK, plus brackets, movie reviews and past seasons of US Drag Race, UK, Canada, Down Under, Espana, Global All Stars, Philippines and more.Join us at our OnlyMary's level for our current recap of Season 4 of Drag Race plus even more movie reviews, brackets, and deep dives into our personal lives!Patreon: www.patreon.com/alrightmaryEmail: alrightmarypodcast@gmail.comInstagram: @alrightmarypodJohnny: @johnnyalso (Instagram)Colin: @colindrucker_ (Instagram)Web: www.alrightmary.com

In the original I Know What You Did Last Summer, some very '90s teenagers are targeted by a killer clad in fisherman's garb and armed with a hook. Nearly 30 years later, a new sequel fires up a very similar plot. The movie includes a new group of young people — including Chase Sui Wonders and Madelyn Cline — and a few key survivors from the first go-'round (Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr.) But does it live up to the legacy of the original?Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopcultureLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
