In this episode of Movie Torture, Brad, Jacob, Hannah and MTD bravely tackle "I Know What You Did Last Summer," a film that Brad lovingly refers to as "straight dookie." Join the crew as they unravel the mystery of why anyone thought this movie needed a sequel. With a plot twist that even a pretzel would envy and characters as memorable as last week's grocery list, Brad's disdain reaches new heights. Meanwhile, Hannah surprises everyone by finding a silver lining in this cinematic storm, proving that one person's trash is another's... well, still trash. Tune in for a rollercoaster of sarcasm, laughter, and Brad's epic rants! Plus, MTD reminds Brad of their 1997 theater outing to see the original during Brad's military graduation—a memory Brad had conveniently blocked out. Adding to the hilarity, Brad recounts how MTD, armed with a trusty VHS camcorder, managed to record the wrong guy at his graduation, mistaking him for Brad. Our host Jacob's novel THE LAST SUMMER, a tale of the Glawackus aka the "Northern Devil Cat," is now availabe from ESpec Books as part of their Systema Paradoxa series of cryptid tales. To celebrate, we're reviewing a movie similarly based on beastie's prowling the woodlands, albeit more extraterrestrial than terrestrial in this case. And Baltimore instead of Stanford. We're excited to review our first Don Dohler movie on the pod: his debut feature THE ALIEN FACTOR (1978)! And we're even more excited to welcome special guest TREVOR HENDERSON back to the show! It's always such a delight to chat with Trevor, but doubly-appropriate since his first appearance on our pod was another Baltimore-centric feature (BUTTERFLY KISSES). THE ALIEN FACTOR is currently streaming on Tubi as of this episode's release, and we absolutely encourage everyone to support Trevor by picking up one of the installments in his SCAREWAVES series from Scholastic, or visiting his InPrnt shop: https://www.inprnt.com/gallery/slimyswampghost/ If you'd like to follow us on social media, you can visit our Linktree page (linked below) but we've also listed some of our social media handles: Linktree: linktr.ee/scarystuff Official site: scarystuffpodcast.com Twitter: @scarystuffpod Instagram: @scarystuffpodcast Letterboxd: @scarystuffpod Incredibly Niche Merch: teepublic.com/user/scary-stuff-podcast You can find a list of all the previous movies we've reviewed and their corresponding episodes (via the "Read Notes" option) here: http://www.letterboxd.com/scarystuffpod/list/all-reviews-scary-stuff-podcast/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!

Mark and Zanandi discuss the 1997 horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer. Directed by Jim Gillespie and starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., and an insane fisherman, the movie focuses on what happens when a car is accidentally driven into a psychotic fisherman. In this episode, they also talk about trunk crabs, insane plans, and tank tops. Enjoy!

A group of five friends inadvertently cause a fatal car accident on the 4th of July. Instead of reporting it, they make a pact to cover it up. One year later, their past comes back to haunt them when a mysterious, hook-wielding killer begins to stalk and murder them one by one. As they are hunted, they realize this has happened before and seek help from two survivors of a similar killing spree that took place in their town back in 1997. In episode 18 of (Pop) Cultural Marxism, Isi and Ajay spend some time with a handful of big news items at the intersection of politics and media—from the Skydance-Paramount merger (and other instances of media market concentration) and its implications for American newsmedia (and its potential new gatekeepers); to Charlie Kirk's assassination, its aftermath, its mediations with mass cultural objects (like alleged HellDivers II bullet etchings or Nepalese protestors with One Piece flags); the culture industry's failure to perform even its therapeutic function; and the growing exclusivity of once-accessible arts venues and performance spaces! A wide ranging discussion of summer media diets follows, beginning with Isi's recent love affair with the Western genre. The two discuss their shared fondness for Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone's many collaborations and the unmatched brilliance of HBO's Deadwood. Turning to the world of gaming, Ajay considers tragic endings (Expedition 33, the Death Stranding franchise), slow gaming (Herdling), and the relationship between gaming and choreography (Split Fiction). Also under consideration: what Joe Wright's miniseries, Mussolini: Son of the Century, gets right about the fascist imaginary; what Len Wiseman's Ballerina gets wrong about the appeal of John Wick; and what Foundation and The Sandman suggest about the challenges of adaptation and the culture industry's recent predilection for a 21st century spin on classical tragedy. Along the way, they return repeatedly to a longstanding PCM preoccupation with medium-specificity as well as the general bleakness seeping into the cultural reflections of this historical moment. WBZ NewsRadio's James Rojas reports.
Send us a textThirty years in the making, the legacy sequel to "I Know What You Did Last Summer" promised to resurrect a beloved 90s horror franchise by bringing back Julie James and Ray Bronson. What we got instead was a bewildering reinvention that left us questioning everything we loved about the original. In this deep-dive episode, we unpack how this sequel fundamentally misunderstands what made the 1997 film work. The original gave us morally complex characters who committed a genuine crime and suffered authentic trauma. This new iteration offers a flimsy premise where fleeing an accident scene (that wasn't even their fault) somehow warrants a murderous rampage. Without that solid foundation, the entire house of cards collapses. The most egregious misstep comes with the killer reveal that completely rewrites a beloved character's personality and motivation. When a film betrays its own legacy this profoundly, it's not just disappointing – it's almost fascinating in its misguided execution. We examine how this character assassination undermines not just this film but retroactively damages the original.Beyond the plot problems, we discuss the film's technical shortcomings: unmemorable kill scenes, underdeveloped characters, and wasted potential. The original film gave us iconic moments like Helen's mannequin escape and Julie's unforgettable bathroom scene. This sequel offers nothing that will linger in your nightmares – except perhaps the baffling script choices. Is there anything to salvage? Surprisingly, yes. The soundtrack delivers some genuine bangers, Sarah Michelle Gellar's brief cameo gives a fleeting glimpse of what could have been, and the final scene between survivors actually shows promise – making everything that came before even more frustrating.Join us for this therapy session as we process our disappointment, celebrate what works, and try to understand how a franchise with such potential could go so terribly wrong. Whether you're a die-hard fan of the original or curious about this new chapter, you'll want to hear our unfiltered take on this fishy sequel.Written Lovingly by AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT

Sarah Michelle Gellar cameo in I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025) Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Breakdown, Analysis, Theories & Spoiler Review — Coy Jandreau & Roxy Striar sit down to react to the highly anticipated legacy sequel in Sony's iconic horror franchise. Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) and co-written with Sam Lansky, the film brings back Jennifer Love Hewitt (Julie James – I Know What You Did Last Summer, Heartbreakers) and Freddie Prinze Jr. (Ray Bronson – She's All That, Scooby-Doo) while introducing a new generation of characters haunted by a chilling hit-and-run mystery. Producer Neal H. Moritz (Fast & Furious, The Boys) ensures this continuation ties back to the 1997 original and 1998's I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. We break down the callbacks, the modern horror tone, and even nods to Julie's legendary scream “What are you waiting for?!” as well as tease at the rumored post-credit setup for the future of the franchise. From Southport, North Carolina to Hollywood's legacy of slashers, this sequel connects to the great horror revival of 2025 while honoring its roots. We're at the end of summer, and, like you, we don't know how it went by so quickly. Also, the constant heat warnings here in Southern Ontario limited when and how long we could get out and practice photography. However, James, Alex, and Bill all had the opportunity to get out or at least intended to practice photography. And today, they sit down to discuss mostly film stocks, such as Phoenix II and Kentmere 200, which were used by the team's cameras. But also when things go sideways and the best intentions to get out and shoot end up with leaving the camera (accidentally) behind.

Sean and Amanda start the show by briefly reacting to the box office performance of ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps' and wondering whether or not superhero movies will ever return to the levels of the MCU golden days (1:39). Then, they bring in Andy Greenwald to discuss Netflix's newest animated success, ‘KPop Demon Hunters,' which they were initially skeptical of but eventually became charmed by, and they hypothesize what makes a big cultural hit in 2025 (4:46). Next, Sean and Amanda unpack the new slasher legacy sequel ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer,' starring Madelyn Cline and Chase Sui Wonders, which they found incredibly condescending. They talk through why they found the script, performances, and kill sequences to be deeply unsuccessful (38:28). Finally, they reflect on what many consider to be the weakest decade of the horror genre and create their 1990s Horror Movie Canon (1:04:59). In the original I Know What You Did Last Summer, some very '90s teenagers are targeted by a killer clad in fisherman's garb and armed with a hook. Nearly 30 years later, a new sequel fires up a very similar plot. The movie includes a new group of young people — including Chase Sui Wonders and Madelyn Cline — and a few key survivors from the first go-'round (Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr.) But does it live up to the legacy of the original?Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopcultureLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
