Romans 6:1-2 — Should the Christian continue in sin so that grace may abound? God forbid. Aided by their natural minds, some in Paul's day made it a habit of using grace as a cloak for sin. Paul argues against this mindset as he refutes those who charged him with preaching antinomianism—the belief that the gospel absolves any obligation to keep moral law. In this sermon on Romans 6:1–2 titled “Dead to Sin,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones contends that anyone who lives according to that belief has not yet begun to understand basic biblical doctrines. Instead of rightly living by grace, there were some in Rome who lived in depression as they sulked in their continual failures. Dr. Lloyd-Jones applies the timeless text in Romans to the many Christians who suffer from a sin-laden depression today. In this Palm Sunday sermon, he shows that the beautiful remedy for such a miserable depression is a true understanding of the cross of Christ and the union of the believer with Christ. Everyone is either in Christ or they are not. They have either been crucified with Christ and died to sin, or stand condemned in their sin.

In the last of a series on coastal archaeological sites and climate change, Professor Lucy Blue speaks to Dr Alex Kent, Coastal Connections Lead, a global partnership between English Heritage and World Monuments Fund.  Learn how Hurst Castle, a coastal fort built on England's southern coast is falling into the sea due to undercutting of the shingle due to storm surges and, like hundred of other sites globally, is suffering from the impacts of climate change.  By bringing together communities around the world that face similar issues, hear how Coastal Connections network aims to share common challenges and a range of solutions, including nature based ones and innovative regional ones. Aided by a series of online workshops and discussions, it became clear that there are many similarities faced by sites around the world.  Alex maps out the goals of Coastal Connections, including site information sheets, creating a worldwide network of coastal site managers and practionners sharing and showcasing solutions, as well as training hubs to equip across generations practical skills to sustainably manage heritage sites.

Flip the Sorcerer leads Vond, Lysander, and Kathar back to the Grig Little Kingdom to help overthrow evil vizier Jhabshasid and restore power to King Flibnabmeister and his daughter Hollylollybon. Aided by former captain of guard Bentonkadonk, they infiltrate the Ogre Skull Palace and find the king missing. Princess Holly is found unconscious and attached to a fiendish device that is extracting her blood and transforming it into a serum. They fight the evil guardian and free Holly, then use the serum to get into the magic library of King Filbnabmeister. There they encounter the king's body and a portal to the Shadowfell, and the evil vizier Jhabshasid. Weak from their former battle, he downs most of the party quickly, leaving only Vond able to try to save who he can! Flip is saved, Kathar is slain, and Lysander and the villain disappear into the Shadow realm. Kathar's body is brought to Fort Heartwood, where the archdruid of Lurue is able to reincarnate her - as an orc. Lysander's fate remains unknown, but peace is restored to the grigs.

The 1st Michigan Colored Infantry Regiment, more than 1,500 strong, helped overwhelm their enemies on the battlefield. Alongside the soldiers, civilian Black men and women contributed in previously unrecognized ways to defending and extending human liberty. One such unsung hero, William Dollarson, escaped from brutal slave conditions in Natchez, became a conductor on the Underground Railroad in Detroit, and joined the staff of Michigan's preeminent general in fighting the Confederacy in Maryland and Virginia. Haskell Wexler) and 1975's "Shampoo" (dir. Hal Ashby). Though differing on surface level, the two films bear striking similarities in their portrayals of apathy to politics in the face of the 1968 presidential election, focusing on egotistical male protagonists more invested in their jobs and tumultuous love lives than the far-reaching events occurring around them. The group begins by discussing the ingenious commentary that "Medium Cool" offers on media and class, with its Chicago-set blend of fiction and documentary and fortuitous backdrop of the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Shifting gears to "Shampoo," they then discuss that film's seeming juxtaposition of its characters' sexual promiscuity and their political context over roughly thirty-six hours in Los Angeles during the aforementioned election, along with the film's status as a self-ordained vehicle for star/co-writer/co-producer Warren Beatty. Suffering in mink takes a human turn as Charlotte Vale (Bette Davis), the unwillingly sheltered adult child of Boston society matron Mrs. Henry Vale (played with iron menace by Gladys Cooper) embarks on a quest to establish a confident independence. Or is it an independent confidence? Aided by the wise and kindly Dr. Jaquith (Claude Rains) following a nervous breakdown, Charlotte has only to overcome her sense of obligation to the world and define her own happiness. Was there ever a more favorable portrayal of therapy? If so, this must predate them all–and it is all the more remarkable for the chauffeur-and-chandelier backdrop of its inhabitants.   Dave and Jeremy marvel at this lost world of fictional high society, and at how easily Bette Davis conveys the inner journey of a character who transcends that world, transformed by her willingness to “be interested in everything,” as Dr. Jacquith instructs her, while at the same time learning to say no when it counts. Could any other actress nail scene after scene with as much self-possession as Davis does when Charlotte resists pressure to return to her old, unhappy life? The love interest here is played by Paul Henreid, gentle instigator of our hero's romantic agency, whose own self-determining arc mirrors Charlotte's just enough to put her nuanced star turn in brilliant relief. We at The Wolf love hard rock, heavy metal, prog rock, classic rock and 80s MTV. While Bryan Adams may match a couple of those categories, we can't say that he was one of our very favorites. Because we were bombarded with him from 1983-86 on US radio and MTV and because girls seemed to like him (maybe his music too), he just didn't do it for us. However, his 5th album released in 1984, Reckless, boasts hit after hit like Heaven, Summer of '69, Run To You, Somebody, and It's Only Love. So as it turns 40 on November 5, we thought it would be a good idea to bring in friend to the show and Canadian rock guru Chris from My Rock N Roll Heaven to give us his perspective. 1984 not only saw the release of Reckless but the launch of Canadian MTV-type station Much Music which not only played videos but had to play a certain percentage of Canadian artists. That helped propel the album to become the first diamond selling album (1,000,000 in sales for Canada) in Canada by a Canadian artist. Aided in the songwriting by Jim Vallance and backed up on guitar by long time collaborator Keith Scott, Bryan had huge success in his home country, in the US and around the globe. The videos all had a theme and featured the same actor (Lysette Anthony) which helped create an image for Adams in the US. Aided and abetted by draftsmen Stephen Bissette and John Totleben, Moore crafts a monumental tale of horror told on an intimate scale that begs the question of what it means to be human. The boys bring their A-Game as they critique this highly praised seminal story. Questions are raised, theories are discussed, and allusions abound as the insightful analysis branches off into as many bulrushes as one could encounter in the swamp. A word to the wise: Stay on the shore. Don't delve into the cloudy and cloying confines of the swamp. Alan Moore and his Swamp Thing could be lurking.

An affluent Cuban merchant and his young pregnant wife set sail from Havana in May 1734 on a peaceful voyage to Hispaniola aboard their private schooner, but a piratical mutiny at sea claimed many lives and set the vessel adrift. Aided by a passing Bahamian mariner, the Nuestra Señora de la Concepçion came to Charleston in distress and gained protection from local authorities. Interviews with the survivors sparked a formal trial that imposed British law on foreign visitors and delivered resolution to a grieving Hispanic widow and her newborn daughter.

On this week's show, the panel begins by dissecting Longlegs, director Osgood Perkin's viral horror movie starring Nicolas Cage that's sweeping the box office. Aided by a clever marketing campaign, Longlegs is undoubtedly the summer's “you gotta see it” horror flick, but does the Silence of the Lambs copycat live up to the hype? Then, the three jump (or is it herkie?) into Greg Whiteley's latest docuseries, America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, which follows the Texan squad from auditions through the grueling NFL season, revealing a quietly devastating portrait of worker exploitation and modern femininity along the way. Finally, the trio is joined by Slate critic Laura Miller to parse through an extreme controversy in the literary world: Last week, Alice Munro's daughter, Andrea Skinner, published an Op-Ed in the Toronto Star detailing the sexual abuse she suffered as a young girl at the hands of her stepfather – abuse that the Nobel Prize-winning author had known about, but chose to ignore.
