Calum, Andy and Geoff analyse the first TV debate between Kate Forbes, Humza Yousaf and Ash Regan broadcast on STV. The candidates got quite personal - is this them trying to carve out differences in public in a really obvious way? Geoff and Andy discuss whether this tactic will continue for the remainder of the campaign. How far did the candidates manage to appeal to SNP members to be their leader, and the wider public to be First Minister? We also got a bit of insight into more of their policy plans with child poverty, the NHS and the National Care Service all featuring. Plus, Geoff and Andy share their experiences of preparing politicians for debates including Geoff's memories of a "head in my hands" moment during the Independence Referendum campaign. jQuery(document).ready(function(){ cab.clickify(); }); Original Podcast with clickable words https://tinyurl.com/2keu5nv7 Contact: irishlingos@gmail.com Nicola Sturgeon resigning as First Minister of Scotland. Nicola Sturgeon ag éirí as a post mar Chéad Aire na hAlban. Nicola Sturgeon has announced that she is stepping down as First Minister of Scotland after eight years. Tá sé fógraithe ag Nicola Sturgeon go bhfuil sí ag éirí as a post mar Chéad Aire na hAlban i ndiaidh ocht mbliana. The First Minister announced this at a press event in Edinburgh this morning when she said it is time for her to stand aside. D'fhógair an Chéad Aire an méid seo ag preas ócáid i nDún Éideann ar maidin nuair a dúirt sí go bhfuil sé in am aici seasamh i leataobh. The leader of the Scottish National Party said she will remain in the post until the party chooses her successor. Dúirt ceannaire Pháirtí Náisiúnta na hAlban go bhfanfaidh sí sa phost go dtí go roghnóidh an páirtí comharba uirthi. Sturgeon is the longest-serving First Minister since Scotland's devolved parliament was established in 1999. Is í Sturgeon an Chéad Aire is faide sa phost ó bunaíodh parlaimint díláraithe na hAlban i 1999. She said that, although she understands that her decision would hurt many people, she believes that it is the wise decision for herself, her party and the country as a whole. Dúirt sí, cé go dtuigeann sí go ngoillfeadh a cinneadh ar go leor daoine, go gcreideann sí gurb é an cinneadh críonna é aici féin, dá páirtí agus don tír trí chéile. Sturgeon has been First Minister in Scotland since 2014 when she succeeded Alex Salmond. Tá Sturgeon ina Céad Aire in Albain ón bhliain 2014 nuair a tháinig sí i gcomharbacht ar Alex Salmond. He resigned as First Minister in 2014 when the Scottish National Party failed in the Independence Referendum. D'éirigh seisean as post an Chéad Aire i 2014 nuair a theip ar Pháirtí Náisiúnta na hAlban sa Reifreann Neamhspleáchais. Sturgeon took the party lead with a firm determination to achieve independence for Scotland, and although she managed to increase the SNP's number of seats significantly after the referendum, she was unsuccessful in her efforts to pass legislation that would allow the parliament to change the constitution. Chuaigh Sturgeon i gceannas an pháirtí agus rún daingean aici neamhspleáchas a bhaint amach d'Albain, agus cé gur éirigh léi cur go mór le líon suíochán an SNP i ndiaidh an reifrinn, níor éirigh léi ina h-iarrachtaí reachtaíocht a rith a cheadódh don pharlaimint an bunreacht a athrú. The British Supreme Court ruled in 2022 that the Scottish Parliament could not pass that legislation, but the SNP now wants Scottish voters to treat the next general election in Britain as a "de facto" referendum. Rialaigh Cúirt Uachtarach na Breataine i 2022 nach bhféadfadh Parlaimint na hAlban an reachtaíocht sin a rith, ach tá an SNP anois ag iarraidh go gcaithfeadhi vótóirí na hAlbhan leis an chéad olltoghchán eile sa Bhreatain mar reifreann "de facto." Nicola Sturgeon has been under siege recently over controversial amendments to gender recognition legislation, but she told reporters this morning that her decision was not about "short-term issues." Bhí Nicola Sturgeon faoi léigear ar na mallaibh maidir le leasuithe conspóideacha ar an reachtaíocht a bhaineann le aitheantas inscne, ach dúirt sí le tuairisceoirí ar maidin nár bhain a cinneadh le "ceisteanna gearr-théarmacha." Britain has rejected the Scottish Gender Recognition Act which would have made it easier for people to legally change their gender. Dhiúltaigh an Bhreatain d'Acht Aitheantais Inscne na hAlban a chiallódh go mbeadh sé níos éasca ag daoine n-inscne a athrú de réir dlí.

With Hannah Bardell MP and Sally Donald. With Hannah Bardell MP and Sally Donald. According to UN analysis early this year, at the current rate, gender equality in the highest positions of power will not be reached for another 130 years. This shows just how much work is needed to create more gender-balanced and better functioning governance around the world. Here in Scotland, we have a gender-balanced cabinet and a female First Minister and a female Finance Secretary, but we know there is still much work to be done to level the playing field. In this episode, Drew talks to Hannah Bardell, MP for Livingston and Sally Donald, Edinburgh Central SNP Women's Officer about their thoughts on the role of women in politics, the challenges they face and how we go about encouraging more women to get involved in campaigning and front line politics. Polling post-referendum in 2014 indicate that women were decisive in delivering a No vote, with 57 per cent voting No, while 53 per cent of men voted Yes. Hannah, Sally, and Drew discuss changing attitudes and looking ahead to the next Independence Referendum how women are helping shape the debate. During their discussion with Drew, both Hannah and Sally talk about the challenges that face women entering politics from a grassroots level and putting themselves forward for election and political life. Their insights into the challenges women face and the benefits of more people-centric policies are thoughtful and well worth a listen. Follow Hannah on twitter here and on Facebook here. Few areas of policy were more divisive in the lead up to the 2014 Independence Referendum than Pensions. People were told repeatedly that one of the most significant risks of independence was losing pension security and the infamous ‘triple lock'. We know this issue was hugely influential in shaping the views of older voters who naturally were concerned about the perceived risk to their pension contributions. Roll on to 2021, and almost every protection voters were promised by Better Together campaigners have been dismantled – including the promise of triple-lock pensions which the UK Tory Government intends to suspend in 2022. In this episode, Drew talks with SNP Westminster Group Leader Ian Blackford to discuss how the debate around pensions has shaped since the referendum. They discuss the impact of pensions policy on people living in Scotland and discuss the issues facing women born in the 1950s. Many people will be familiar with the WASPI campaign against this injustice. Ian and Drew discuss how the UK Government could and should have made different decisions to support women affected by these changes. People living in Scotland rightly want to know that the pensions they have paid into all their working lives are in safe hands. It is a subject that will dominate the debate ahead of the next referendum, making this episode is a must-listen for campaigners. Follow Ian on Twitter here and on Facebook here. Jenny Gilruth MSP has been the MSP for Mid-Fife and Glenrothes since 2016, serving in the Scottish Government's justice and education committees. Now, she serves as our minister for Culture, Europe and International Development in Holyrood. In 2014, the Better Together campaign infamously told Scotland that the only way to guarantee EU membership was to vote No. Many Scots who voted No cited this reason as the main reason for doing so. But, less than two years after the Independence Referendum, we had a referendum on EU membership. Fast forward a few years after that and we're outside of the EU. So, how exactly is this a big loss to Scotland? Many people will be aware of the single market, freedom of movement of goods and people etc. But what other examples of positive European influence can we point to? And how would rejoining benefit Scotland? Would we even be able to rejoin? Take the ERASMUS scheme, for example. Many think of the opportunities it provided to students, both Scottish and European, but it also enriched many local communities within Scotland due to the associated immigration, argues Jenny. This, in turn, led to a more vibrant society. Sadly, the effects of Brexit mean much of this is being undone. We're now out of the EU and all the major Westminster parties (bar the SNP) have abandoned the campaign to rejoin. This means the only way to get our membership back is to become an independent country. But how likely is it that we'd be accepted back in? Jenny makes the point that many European diplomats have gone on the record and spoken very favourably of Scotland's chances. And we're not the only ones that would benefit from Scotland rejoining. European countries stand to gain a compassionate, outward-looking ally in the event of Scotland becoming a member state in our own right. Listen to all of the above and much more on this week's episode of Scotland's Choice. For more of Jenny's work, click here. Listen to other Scotland's Choice episodes here.

In conversation with David Linden MP. The Scottish people have returned a pro-independence majority of SNP and Green MSPs to the Scottish Parliament, providing the mandate for a new Independence Referendum. In this first episode of Scotland's Choice, Drew discusses what this result means for the Scottish people with David Linden, the Member of Parliament for Glasgow East and SNP Spokesperson for Work & Pensions. The election of a new Parliament in Edinburgh coincided with the Queen's speech outlining the new legislative priorities at Westminster, highlighting the sheer scale of the ever-widening gap between the priorities set in London and the values and wishes of the people of Scotland. In his contribution to the debate on the Queen's speech, David condemned the UK Government's failure to bring forward an Employment Bill, pointing out that this translates no meaningful action on the catalogue of employment areas that needs urgent address. There will be no answers to the “fire and re-hire” practices employed by several high profile companies and no action on the broken, sick pay system exposed by the pandemic or the fact that 1 out of 8 UK workers lives in poverty. Drew and David discuss the impact of these decisions. For more on David's work, visit www.davidlinden.scot Listen to other Scotland's Choice episodes here.

Professor Cairns Craig’s new book, The Wealth of the Nation: Scotland, Culture and Independence (Edinburgh University Press, 2018), which has been shortlisted for the Saltire History Book of the Year Award, is a wide-ranging study of the ways in which Scottish culture was defined, exported, transformed, and smuggled through its assimilation in the British State and the British Empire, their rise, their fall, and the more recent fallout. Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations (1776), and the Chicago School and Thatcher’s distortions of its lessons, is a central theme: A considered analyses of the structure of Smith’s thought, its uses and abuses open and close the argument. Craig develops and applies very original critical concepts to Scotland’s cultural history. These include: ‘Xeniteian migration’ (as opposed to diasporic migration: these are institution-builders, recasting the world in Scotland’s image); ‘Nostophobia’ (revulsion toward the culture of one’s own country, especially where it is seen to be ‘past-oriented’); and ‘Theoxenia’ (hospitality to strangers on the basis that they might be Gods in disguise; this notion is close to the idea of a vast horizon of possible Scotlands that was ignited during the 2014 Independence Referendum). Beginning among the thinkers of the Scottish Enlightenment, Craig’s argument casts its net wide, incorporating, for example: the history Scottish Free Masonry; the reception of Walter Scott’s historical novels; the development of so-called ‘race science’; the history of theoretical physics; the intent and impact of pastoral literatures; Associationist aesthetics; film history; modern and contemporary sculpture; contemporary Scottish politics; and a vast array of Scottish literary authors, from Scott to Liz Lochhead. The Wealth of the Nation is vital reading for those interested in the deeper currents of contemporary debates around Scotland’s cultural politics, and for anyone interested in the foundational relationships between what Craig calls ‘Cultural Wealth’ and a more materialist, or dryly economic notion of historical processes. Quick Comment: Emmanuel Tjibaou on New Caledonia's independence referendum

In November, New Caledonia will face an independence referendum. This will bring to an end the Matignon and Noumea Accords, which delivered 30 years of peace after a bloody civil war. France is overseeing preparations. Australia's position continues to be simple support for the full implementation of the 1998 Noumea Accord, including a genuine referendum process. The Accord planned a scheduled handover and sharing of some responsibilities by France, and economic re-balancing between the mainly European and mainly Kanak areas. It stipulates that the final vote would decide three things: New Caledonia's future international status; whether France retains responsibility for defence, foreign affairs, currency, law and order, and justice; and citizenship, or employment/voting rights, for longstanding residents. On August 15, CarriageWorks presented the world premiere of new work by resident company Marrugeku, with an inter-cultural and trans-Indigenous production, featuring Australian and New Caledonia dancers of First Nations, immigrant and settler descent. Presented as New Caledonia moves towards the referendum on independence from France, Le Dernier Appel (The Last Cry) asks questions of cultural, political and personal decolonisation in both Australia and New Caledonia. Alexandre Dayant, Research Fellow at the Lowy Institute, interviewed Emmanuel Tjibaou, the Director of the Tjibaou Cultural Centre (which co-commissioned Le Dernier Appel). Mr. Tjibaou has been involved in the development of Le Dernier Appel with Marrugeku (Australia's leading Indigenous intercultural dance theatre company), from a Kanak perspective. Emmanuel Tjibaou is the son of the assassinated Kanak independence leader Jean Marie Tjibaou who signed the accord for the peace treaty with France and the conditions of the referendum which takes place this November.

Host Ryan Heath talks to POLITICO's chief Europe correspondent Matthew Karnitschnig about a homegrown journalism experiment: POLITICO's first Global Policy Lab. We convened labor and economics experts, executives and union representatives, along with regular POLITICO readers, to develop stories about how Europe can engineer growth, and in particular to develop real policy prescriptions for how Germany's old world manufacturing base could survive the country's demographic crisis. Robots to the rescue: Germany is using robots to beat back its demographic crisis of an aging population and to keep its manufacturing competitive. For all the value delivered by robots Matthew Karnitschnig told us that "You can't just rely on robots. There really is going to be no way around dealing with the problem without more immigration." To maintain Germany's current workforce average net migration levels would need to 400,000 per year. Telecoms connects all, so must support all: Telia CEO Johan Dennelind rejects the idea of telecoms as a "siloed industry" that exists in its own corner of the economy. He says telecoms is a platform that connects everyone, so he has both business and social obligation to commit to projects like the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. No charity here: From helping to deliver corruption-free markets to better health outcomes for women, Dennelind says delivering on social goals is part of Telia's annual reporting and "part of our core business. This is good for us and our shareholders." Sweden's Stockholm second only to Silicon Valley in start-up race: Dennelind says Sweden's success "comes on the back of an ecosystem in Stockholm that is fantastic," which is due to Sweden's political framework, skills base, local attitudes and good capital funding. No need for Macron's proposed EU agency for disruptive innovation: "I don't think it's needed. What is needed is to let loose the forces that are out there," in terms of skills and capital. Dennelind added "Creating separate innovation boxes is not the overarching answer, with all respect" to President Macron. The Merkel / Macron elevator pitch: "Do you understand the potential of digitalization, do you understand Europe can fall behind, but also lead the way? If you understand that which I believe you do: create the conditions, set the framework right, just do it," based on the Commission's proposed new telecoms code which national governments have attempted to water down. How to regulate right: Dennelind's advice to EU regulators is apply a principle of "Same service, same rules. Don't regulate technology: regulate services and behaviors. Don't regulate in advance: regulate problems" "We risk entering into a phase where we don't get things done in Europe": Dennelind thinks both sides have a special obligation to be constructive given the complicated telecoms landscape of more than 120 companies in Europe, compared to just a handful in the United States and China. EU WTF moment of the week is Catalonia: Our panelists Ailbhe Finn and Lina Aburous express a shared sadness at how Sunday's independence vote in Catalonia was handled. They question what instructions were given to police in Barcelona, discuss threat to the EU's credibility as a defender of citizens' fundamental rights, look at why finding an external mediator to bring the two sides together will be difficult. Dear POLITICO discusses Brit-bashing over Brexit in Brussels: Our panel says individual Britons can't be blamed for the decisions of a whole population and its government, and shouldn't be subject to rudeness of discrimination as a result of Brexit. They advised a listener that as a Briton in Brussels he is subject now to behavior that wouldn't be acceptable if directed at him as a member of a minority group.

People in Kurdish region of Iraq have voted overwhelmingly for independence in a popular referendum that took place in late September. No country in the region wanted this referendum to happen--and neither did the United States, with whom the Kurds have been a longtime ally. Soon after the results were announced, the Iraqi government and other countries in the region like Turkey and Iran threatened retaliatory measures.   The implications of this referendum and its fallout are still unfolding, and here to help me make sense of what this referendum was all about and how it may impact the political and diplomatic dynamic of the region is Morgan Kaplan. He is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Buffett Institute for Global Studies and the Department of Political Science at Northwestern University. We discuss why this referendum was so politically significant and how it may affect the future shape of the Middle East.   Become a premium subscriber to unlock bonus episodes, earn other rewards, and support the show!

Institute scholar Michael Knights says that the upcoming independence referendum in Iraq’s Kurdistan region is already yielding positive results in the form of compromise and cooperation among parties and movements whose enmity has long gridlocked Iraqi Kurdish politics. While a pro-independence result is a near certainty for the September 25 vote, the shape of an eventual settlement between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and Iraq’s national government in Baghdad could take many forms, each with its own problems and benefits for U.S. interests in the region.
