As the hostilities go on between Israel and Iran we try and get beneath the "We support the right of Israel to defend itself" to why Israel decided to launch its attacks, why now , and the realities of nuclear proliferation in the region.Meanwhile a report by the Centre For Media Monitoring has forensically examined the BBC's coverage of Gaza. The results are damning in terms of revealing BBC bias.We take a look at the spending review not only the decisions made but especially what impact Labour's decisions may have on Scottish politics. Lesley's latest article in The National not only covers this but asks if the SNP's old attack lines are now almost gone and its claims of success belong largely to the old glory days. Will John Swinney's Scotland 2050 speech bring them back?Despite Deputy Leader Keith Brown committing to an independence convention before the Holyrood elections at the 2024 SNP Annual Conference this has now been knocked firmly on the head by Angus Robertson. Was this a mistake? The trial of Kneecap member, Mo Chara, under Section 13 of the Terrorism Act will go ahead at Westminster Magistrates' Court tomorrow. What does this tell us about the nature of the state and its decisions on who and who not to prosecute under the Act's provisions? As per usual there's other meanderings and maybe a wee mention of the golf. ★ Support this podcast ★

How Medicare Special Needs Plans Are Changing—and How Agents Can Support Clients NowRecent shifts in Medicare Special Needs Plans (SNPs), especially those affecting dual-eligible (D-SNP) beneficiaries, are causing ripples both for insurance professionals and the vulnerable individuals they serve. In this episode of Insurance Business Babes, Kathe Kline and Joanna Wyckoff break down what's ahead and offer actionable strategies for agents to stay ahead of these changes.Understanding the Major Benefit ReductionsBeginning in 2026, CMS regulations will roll back many popular ancillary benefits for D-SNPs—including the much-loved grocery card. While chronically ill SNP beneficiaries (C-SNPs) may still qualify for these extras, dual-eligible clients will see notable losses. For many low-income individuals, these grocery benefits made up a crucial portion of their monthly "income," so the impact will be significant. Why This Matters: Client and Agent ImplicationsThe removal of grocery and ancillary benefits doesn't just hurt consumers; insurance agents relying on those “perks” to showcase plan value will need to adjust their approach. The focus will have to return to the medical coverage itself—maximum out-of-pocket costs, plan networks, and real medical needs—rather than the shiny add-ons.Compliant Communication: Getting Ahead of the CurveRegulation limits how and when agents can warn clients about specific plan changes. However, Kathe and Joanna recommend proactive and compliant communication:Send out educational newsletters focusing on national policy or regulation shifts, not plan specifics, to maintain compliance.Create video content raising awareness about upcoming regulatory changes, with clear calls-to-action for annual reviews.Segment your outreach using a CRM to target only affected D-SNP clients, avoiding unnecessary concern for unaffected beneficiaries.Building Resourcefulness for ClientsLosing financial help through Medicare plans means clients may turn to other social supports. Agents can add value by compiling local and national resources—food banks, utility assistance, community gardens, and home-sharing services—to include in their outreach.Time to Be the Trusted AdvisorAs we move towards AEP and beyond, insurance professionals must reclaim their role as consultants rather than benefit brokers. Proactively supporting clients through these changes—with information, empathy, and local resources—will protect your book of business and earn long-term trust. This episode is sponsored by CertifiedMedicareAgents.com. In this week's episode we discuss the U turn by the Westminster Government on the winter fuel allowance. Where is the money coming from and how is it going to be paid for? We ask what happend to the accusations levelled at the SNP when they rose to the challenge and reinstated the payment ahead of the Westminster Government. We look too at the impact on the SNP's policy, with Labour trying to make it look as if the Scottish payment will just be £100? It won't. We try to clear some of that up.We talk about the aftermath of the Hamilton by-election and that there's no getting away from it, it was a really bad loss by the SNP. There was no mention of independence and the candidate was not as local as the truly local David Russell. We look at how the election played out and wheter that local connection is what mattered in an era where people have lost trust in parties. We examine what that says about the candidates chosen so far by the SNP in the Scottish election. We look as well at Israel and Gaza. Breaking news that the British government has taken sanctions out against two Israeli cabinet members. But that's not going to go anywhere near placating the 300 civil servants who've written a letter objecting to the British government's support of the Israeli government and have been told that if they want to keep objecting, they can resign. That and much more.LinksWatch The Applecross film on YouTube https://youtu.be/J0kUgdms368Remember to click subscribe on YouTube and click the Bell icon to get notified when new videos are releasedScotland 2070: Healthy Wealthy and Wisehttps://scotland2070.org/Common Weal: Common Home Planhttps://www.commonweal.scot/policies/the-common-home-plan/Build Canada Homeshttps://liberal.ca/housing-plan/Sam Cotes - Sky The five considerable problems with the chancellor's U-turn on winter fuel paymentshttps://news.sky.com/story/the-five-key-issues-from-chancellors-winter-fuel-payment-u-turn-13381413SSE Press ReleaseCritical Skye electricity transmission upgrade granted planning consenthttps://www.sse.com/news-and-views/2025/05/critical-skye-electricity-transmission-upgrade-granted-planning-consent/Scottish Government planning case and documentshttps://www.energyconsents.scot/ApplicationDetails.aspx?cr=ECU00003395 ★ Support this podcast ★

Scottish Labour have a new MSP today as Davy Russell won the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election, taking the seat from the SNP. Labour won with 31.6% of the vote with the SNP second on 29.4%, Reform close behind on 26.1% and the Conservatives a distance fourth with just 6% of the vote; this marks rare good news for both Keir Starmer and Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar. Both SNP and Reform will be disappointed not to have won, but Reform have been quick to highlight how close they came, considering how new the party is. Plus, there are signs that Reform took votes away from the incumbent SNP, demonstrating again that Reform can appeal to voters across the political spectrum – what does this mean for next year's Holyrood elections? This comes as Reform reels from the resignation of its chairman Zia Yusuf last night – how much impact will this have on the party? Lucy Dunn was in Scotland for the by-election and joins James Heale, alongside former Reform strategist Gawain Towler. Produced by Patrick Gibbons and Megan McElroy. Hosted on Acast. It's been a tumultuous twenty four hours on the Right, both in the UK and in the US.Firstly, Reform chairman Zia Yusuf resigned from the party yesterday evening, claiming that “working to get a Reform government elected” was not “a good use of my time”.Then, Donald Trump and Elon Musk's row deepened further, with the Musk calling for the president to be impeached and claiming that Trump was was “named in the Epstein files”. Trump for his part said Musk was “wearing thin” and had “lost his mind”.Former Conservative blogger turned Reform activist Tim Montgomerie joins Camilla and Gordon to reflect on Zia Yusuf's departure, and speak to one of Reform's most recent defectors from Labour, Scottish councillor Jamie McGuire, about the party's results in the Hamilton by-election where it came third behind Labour and the SNP.They also speak to Daily Telegraph Senior US Correspondent Rob Crilly about the escalating war of words between two of the world's most powerful men.We want to hear from you! Today's episode is about a pivotal event in British history that took place exactly 50 years ago: the 1975 referendum on Britain's membership of the European Community. David talks to historian Robert Saunders about why it was so different in so many ways from the Brexit referendum in 2016. Why in 1975 were Labour and the SNP the Eurosceptic parties? What made the Tories pro-European? Where was immigration as an election issue? How did the Yes campaign overturn a big deficit in the polls? Plus: why didn't it settle the question, so that another referendum had to be held four decades later? Available tomorrow on PPF+: Part 2 of this conversation in which David and Robert try to make sense of the many differences between the 1975 and 2016 referendums as well as exploring where Britain stands in relation to Europe in 2025. It's Farage's big test in Scotland. For years it was a political dead-end for Reform party leader - heckled in Edinburgh, chased from restaurants in Aberdeen, and repeatedly rejected at the ballot box.But in today's Holyrood by-election in Hamilton, Larkhall & Stonehouse, Reform UK is mounting a serious challenge. With Farage back in charge and his candidate Ross Lambie gaining ground in an SNP stronghold, could this be the moment his party makes a breakthrough north of the border? And while the Tories remain locked in internal warfare, we speak to Reform's most senior council leader, Linden Kemkaran, on how the party plans to cut spending with their own version of Elon Musk's DOGE and why she wants to end taxpayer-funded English lessons for migrants.Producer: Georgia Coan and Lilian FawcettSenior Producer: John CadiganPlanning Editor: Venetia RaineyExecutive Producer: Louisa WellsSocial Media Producer: James SimmonsVideo Editor: Will WaltersStudio Operator: Meghan SearleWith assistance from Andy Mackenzie and Ryan Gudge Hosted on Acast. Jeremy Corbyn, independent MP for Islington North, today introduced a bill into UK parliament to secure a public inquiry into Britain's role in the genocide in Gaza. The former Labour leader is demanding transparency around UK military, economic and political cooperation with Israel, including weapons, intelligence and the use of RAF Akrotiri on Cyprus. He has received support from a range of independent, Labour, Green, SNP and other MPs. Corbyn says a cover-up is going on into British complicity and adds a Chilcot-style inquiry is the only way to get to the truth. He slams his former colleagues in the Labour Party including Keir Starmer, David Lammy and John Healey, saying they should be investigated for overseeing UK complicity.

In this conversation, the speakers discuss the current political landscape in Scotland, focusing on the upcoming by-election and the performance of various political candidates. They evaluate the Labour Party's leadership under Anas Sarwar and the pressures he faces, particularly if Labour performs poorly in the by-election.
