In this upbeat episode, Indypodcasters Fiona and Marlene speak with Fatima Joji, a member of the National Executive of Women for Independence (WFI), about the organisation's bold relaunch on International Women's Day . WFI played a vital role in the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, building a respected and influential grassroots network of women-led local groups. But over the last decade, momentum has slowed and some groups have gone quiet. Fatima shares her vision for re-energising WFI, the outcome of their first Annual General Meeting, and how women's voices are still crucial to shaping an independent Scotland.

Laurie MacFarlane from Future Economy Scotland gave, in our opinion, the standout speech at the recent Independence Forum for Scotland conference held in Edinburgh on 1st March 2025. Land Reform is one of those key topics where the public mood seems to be for further, faster reform than our politicians seem able to keep up with but the stakes are high and the potential benefits to Scotland are immense. In this thought provoking interview, Marlene and Fiona sit down with data analyst Stuart Donald to discuss his fascinating research on the "union dividend". Stuart's research delves into the origins of the Barnett formula and even further back to pre war economics to unpack the myths and misconceptions about the financial benefits Scotland supposedly receives from England and how much better off we would be if we were able to make our own political choices. Stuart also highlights how the Westminster First Past The Post electoral system disproportionately favours the right and disenfranchises poorer communities. Could Proportional Representation hold the key to a fairer system? Will independence come soon enough to save Scotland from the demographic time bomb created by Westminster mismanagement? We chat to Scottish independence campaigner Liam McLaughlan who we first came across when he stood as Scottish Socialist Party candidate for Glasgow East in the General election. Liam is a veteran of the legendary Radical Independence Campaign in 2014 and last month he gave the opening speech at a conference organised by left wing anti establishment group Conter to mark the 10 year anniversary of the independence referendum. We invited him into the studio to talk about the event, his experiences and his thoughts for the future campaign. Liam also had an article published in the National newspaper which you can read here https://www.thenational.scot/politics/24606241.indyrefs-10-year-anniversary-not-waste-another-decade/ Also look out for a follow up episode with highlights from other speakers at the conference coming soon. Scotland has practically the largest units of local government in the world. An average Scottish council has 175,000 people compared to an average across the EU of 10,000. There seems to be widespread consensus that something needs to be done about the over-centralisation of Scotland, but little agreement about what that should be. A group of individuals from a range of backgrounds - activists, academics, trade unionists and more - have set themselves the task of raising the profile of this democratic deficit and engaging the public and politicians in a discussion about how to address it. Indypodcasters have been presenting a series of podcasts on the topic of the kind of national conversation Scots are having and this seemed a perfect fit for that series so we went along to the launch event which was held in Edinburgh on 9th September 2024. This is our recording of the public launch event. On 18th September 2024 we marked the 10th anniversary of the historic first Scottish Independence Referendum, Indyref for short. During a passionate and exhilarating campaign, support for the Yes side grew from around 30% to over 50% before settling back at 45% on the day of the vote. In the words of Professor Sir John Curtace, the Yes side lost the vote but we won the campaign. Support for independence has hovered around the 50% mark for the last decade. Campaign group Believe In Scotland organised events throughout Scotland to mark the occasion. The mood was reflective, but upbeat and determined. We are STILL YES. Speeches from the Holyrood rally: 00:00:48 Gordon MacIntyre Kemp, founder of Believe In Scotland 00:12:56 Lesley Riddoch, award winning journalist, author, filmmaker 00:28:32 Richard Walker, Editor of the Sunday National 00:40:31 Andrew Barr, co-founder of the National Collective 00:46:52 Gordon MacIntyre Kemp You can contribute to the Believe in Scotland crowdfunder here https://www.believeinscotland.org/crowdfunder2024 Independence Live's crowdfunder is here https://independencelive.net/crowdfunder/ The Scottish Independence Podcasts team produce a NEW podcast episode every Friday search for Scottish Independence Podcasts wherever you get your podcasts. 10 years on from the Independence Referendum we catch up with "artist, writer and deviant collagist" Greg Moodie. After weeks of violent outbreaks in England, the far right racist contingent tried to bring their poison to Glasgow's George Square last weekend. Glasgow was having none of it and organised an anti racist demonstration which drew a far bigger crowd than the racists could muster. We reflect on the event with our guests Bill Ramsay and Isobel Lindsay and consider whether Scotland's distinctive national culture is enough to protect us from these malignant influences. The conversation ranges from our sense of our own Scottishness, our colonial past, the haunting experience of the clearances, our shared values and the inevitable fracturing of the UK state. We also consider whether the SNP can rise to the challenge of making the changes necessary to survive the 2026 Holyrood Elections.
