In this episode, we delve into the significant events that have unfolded in the political landscape during the week. We start with the explosive findings from the Ben Roberts-Smith defamation case, which confirmed the truth behind shocking allegations, including civilian murders in Afghanistan and disturbing behaviour towards a woman.Shining a light on government actions, we discuss revelations of the former Morrison government misspending $2 billion in health funding programs, exposing a pattern of poor guidelines and politically motivated grants. These unethical practices continue to provide material for the National Anti-Corruption Commission, adding to the Morrison government's list of possibly illegal behavior.Another major development is the official interest rate rise, reaching the highest rate since 2012. Amidst the blame game, we explore various factors contributing to this economic challenge and emphasise the government's responsibility to address the problem. In Western Australia, we highlight the controversial decision to award Gina Rinehart as Western Australian of the Year, questioning the selection criteria that favour wealthy businesspeople over community champions and unsung heroes. Our attention then shifts to the ongoing push for an inquiry into the Murdoch media empire in Australia, a long-overdue inquiry to examine the influence of News Corporation, which we believe has become a cancerous force in the media and political landscape. To provide insight, we interview Australian Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, who shares her perspective on an inquiry and its potential to improve media behaviour in Australia. Finally, we address the contentious issue of growing HECS debts, a scheme implemented in 1990. We explore the impact of increased inflation rates on HECS debts, and the need for fundamental reform of the university and higher education sector, highlighting the broader community benefits that education brings.

Sarah Hanson-Young's biggest and most public battle with sexism came via a defamation lawsuit against former Liberal-Democrat senator David Leyonhjelm. A targeted media blitz in 2018 put her at the centre of a slut-shaming campaign. But the war started long before and has been raging since she entered politics aged just 25. Behind the closed doors of parliament, Senator Hanson-Young reveals a constant barrage of misogyny and sexualised bullying which has largely remained undisturbed - until now. In this week’s episode of Trans Tasman Talk, Tim and Dieuwe discuss the latest local political news and who seems to be running the nations on either side of the Tasman: Chinese Communists or local bureaucrats? Revelations in Australia have shown that the Chinese Communist Party tried to plant a spy as a Liberal MP. There is some actual journalism being done as Australian media investigates, but on the other side of the ditch, the reaction to CCP influence is always far more muted. In New Zealand, American comedian Stephen Colbert was on a state-funded visit to do PR with Jacinda Ardern and announce that he’ll move to New Zealand for real next year – but Tim and Dieuwe don’t think he’ll give up his 15m salary. Former Australian senator David Leyonhjelm has lost a defamation suit that Sarah Hanson-Young of the Greens took against him. The court ruled that he owes her $120,000 for implying she was a misandrist and a hypocrite in comments he made about her in the media after a Senate chamber dispute. Hanson Young claimed she’d been slut-shamed, but if progressives believe that being a slut isn’t a bad thing, how can she have been shamed? In New Zealand, the legal feud between NZ First and National continues as threats of fraud and lawsuits continue to fly. It’s all about the donors, and by now it’s more than clear enough that both parties have special interests buying up influence. The extent to which the bureaucracy is running and how disconnected MPs often are have been highlighted by Scott Morrison’s office having transgender bathrooms, which he quickly ordered dismantled after their existence was revealed. Morrison’s image seems to be starting to fade as he shows little tangible progress on the issues that got him elected. A Westpac scandal has rocked Australia where it’s been revealed that 25 million illegal transactions for sex traffickers and paedophiles had been approved by the bank amounting to 11 billion in revenue. The CEO has since resigned and been given a 2.7m “golden handshake” after he made statements that the breach was not an issue for everyday Australians and seemed more concerned that they’d have to cancel their Christmas party. In a more lighthearted story to round out the show, we see that 25% of Kiwibuild homes have not sold on the market, nor will Housing NZ attempt to acquire them. Comrade Jacinda is building houses that even her own government won’t buy. Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young has strongly backed party leader Richard Di Natale’s push to purge those who leaked against candidate Alex Bhathal in the Batman byelection. Hanson-Young told The Conversation it was clear that the party infighting played on the minds of voters. “I don’t think there’s a place for people who want to undermine our party like that. This selfish act by a small number of people in Victoria has ramifications for all of us … because of that these individuals need to face the consequences.” On the future of the Greens, Hanson-Young admitted that while nobody could match Bob Brown’s legacy, it was important the party get behind Di Natale’s leadership - which has been criticised by some Greens figures outside parliament.
