Mining billionaire Gina Rinehart is planning on merging her two iron ore operations in Western Australia's Pilbara region.
The Australian Financial Review's (AFR) 2025 Rich List is out, naming the top 200 wealthiest people in Australia. Leading the pack once again is mining magnate Gina Rinehart, with a fortune of $38.1 billion. But what about Indian-origin Australians? Listen to this podcast if you're curious to find out whether they made the list—and where they rank in terms of net worth.
Just as quickly as tariffs were halted, they could be back on again, after a US appeals court said it would hear the case. Retail spending was softer over the month of April, falling 0.1% due to unseasonally warm weather. The AFR Rich List for 2025 puts Gina Rinehart at the top of the tree with $38.1 billion in wealth. And the ASX puts record highs in its sights again. Interview with Yolanda Redrup, AFR Rich List Editor. At 13 years old, a young Gina Rinehart read a book that would help shape her worldview – Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, which is having a moment around the world. The novel's capitalist underpinnings promote the idea that people should strive to be their best industrial selves. In this episode, we explore how these values are playing out in Rinehart's life today, including her proposal to build a coalmine in Canada's Rocky Mountains. And we hear how author and environmental campaigner Tim Winton views her efforts to prevent an overhaul of Australia's environmental laws
Gina Rinehart's father Lang Hancock is well known as a pioneer of the iron ore industry in Australia but few realise Hancock started his mining career on a smaller scale and digging for a different substance – blue asbestos. Hancock and his partner started the mining operation at Wittenoom in the 1940s before selling it to another company, CSR, which mined the area for 20 more years. Wittenoom has become synonymous with an immense tragedy that unfolded upon thousands of the people who lived and worked there due to exposure to asbestos fibres. In this episode of Gina, we interrogate some of the stories her family chooses to celebrate – and others they don't
Australia's federal election delivered a clear and in many ways stunning victory for the incumbent centre-left Labor government led by PM Anthony Albanese. Coming a week after an even more astonishing victory by the centre-left Liberal Party in Canada, Darren is intensely focused on the extent to which President Trump, and Trumpism, played a meaningful role in Labor's victory, and what this devastation means for the future of conservative politics in Australia. Darren is joined again by good friend and journalist Eliza Harvey, who is Executive Producer of the ABC's Q&A program, to talk things through. Australia in the World is written, hosted, and produced by Darren Lim, with research and editing this episode by Hannah Nelson and theme music composed by Rory Stenning. In the last episode, we covered historical claims made over the years that Lang Hancock, Gina's father, had two unacknowledged daughters with separate Indigenous women. It's the portrait of Gina Rinehart that launched 1,000 memes, went viral globally and became Australia's Mona Lisa. But it's also a symbol of how wealth intersects with other areas of life, including art and sport. How does Rinehart use her money to control her image – and what would she rather you don't see? This episode of Gina is about power and control, and the colonial history of Australia. It contains references to outdated offensive language and events that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people may find distressing. It also contains the names of Indigenous Australians who have died. Listen with care

Gina Rinehart has been Australia's richest person for the last six years in a row. But where does her money come from? In episode three we unpack the bitter rivalries, court battles and family conflicts behind the Hancock fortune – and consider a fundamental question: is Rinehart a mining heiress or is she a self-made mining magnate? We then look at her crowning achievement to date in her time at the helm of Hancock Prospecting – owning and operating her own iron mine at Roy Hill, something her father was never able to do Listen and subscribe to the Gina Podcast at theguardian.com/gina
Gina Rinehart's father helped changed the course of Australian history when he lobbied to overturn the ban on iron ore exports in the 1950s, laying the foundation for the Hancock family fortune. In her own life, Rinehart campaigned successfully against Kevin Rudd's mining tax and has made several attempts to gain influence through key media organisations. In episode 2 of Gina, senior correspondent Sarah Martin explores the extent to which both father and daughter have influenced governments of the day. We also discuss Trump's outrageous call for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza.
Two of Australia’s richest people – Gina Rinehart and Anthony Pratt - were on the invites list to Donald Trump’s inauguration, as he was sworn in as US President for the second time today. It was the latest example of Trump collecting some billionaires from around the world to be part of the new president’s inner circle. So what does this mean for Australia? Could these relationships help us avoid tariffs Trump is threatening? Could it help our economy? Or will this just be a group of very rich people hoping to make each other richer? On this episode of the Briefing, Bension Siebert speaks with Guardian Australia journalist Ben Doherty about how close Trump has become with this country’s richest people, and what these relationships could mean for us. Rinehart, who describes herself as a “long standing member of the Trump support group ‘the Trumpettes'”, is not only cultivating her ties among America's right-wing political elite. She also remains a highly influential figure in Australian politics. And with the Australian election just months away, Rinehart's friendship with Opposition Leader Peter Dutton is more pertinent than ever.
