Mr Bandt, who was elected party leader in 2020 following the resignation of Richard Di Natale for family reasons, has continued to highlight the Greens' focus on environment and social justice.

In February, then Greens’ leader Richard Di Natale stepped down from the leadership after five years and announced he’d leave parliament to spend for more time with his family. On Tuesday, he delivered his valedictory speech to the senate – remotely – and on Wednesday, he formally resigned. In his speech Di Natale said “We’ve closed off the [parliament] building to the community, but we’re throwing the gates wide open to vested interests with deep pockets.” Asked if there should be tougher control on lobbying and what could be done to limit the power of “vested interests”, he says: “There’s a few things that need to happen. "The first thing is political donations. There are cancer on our democracy, and we need to immediately move to a system of public funding of election campaigns with basically the prohibition of all corporate donations.” “The second thing you have to do is … close that revolving door between lobbyists and MP’s… It’s remarkable that some MPs don’t even leave the parliament before they get on the payroll of some of these interest groups, whether it’s in the defence industry, the gambling industry, the alcohol industry, the mining industry.” “And finally, we need a national anti-corruption body.” Many would regard current leader Adam Bandt as more radical than his predecessor. Di Natale sees the difference as more cosmetic. “I think Adam and I shared a sort of political outlook on most things. We’re obviously different people. We might have different ways of communicating. And that’s to be expected. But the truth is, [in] terms of our policy direction, in terms of all the things we’ve been campaigning on, there’s very little of a difference between us or indeed any of our Greens colleagues.”

Holly’s back so a dip into the royal family is almost inescapable. In a TV interview this week, Meghan Markle’s dad, Thomas Markle, said that he will talk to the media every 30 days until his daughter calls him back. Should media outlets be held accountable for playing a role in fueling family feuds?  Also, Richard Di Natale; the doctor turned Greens leader, announced his retirement from politics, saying that he wants to spend more time with his young sons, Luca and Ben, and wife Lucy. So should we worry about how our politician’s schedules impact their lives and families? Plus, the American Superbowl halftime show aired on Sunday and it is full of implicit political messaging, a call for cultural diversity, and booty shaking. But was J. Richard Di Natale is a Senator for Victoria and the leader of the Australian Greens. His seat isn't up this election but he is out there campaigning hard for the Greens to retain their positions in the Senate and potentially pick up some lower house seats too. In this conversation we covered a lot, from Richard's thoughts on the egging of the PM to the ghosts of social media past sinking young people's political careers to his party's political fortunes to capitalism to MDMA. But it's clear that the Greens' and Richard's passion is focussed on the existential threat of climate change (as you'd expect). Here Richard outlines the importance of the battle against Adani, the bizarre coal culture war and what a just transition for coal miners might actually look like. Doctor Richard di Natale is many things, beyond being a general practitioner and public health specialist. He's an Australian Senator in the Federal Government, and leader of the Australian Greens Party, a powerful third party. The Greens are a fascinating party with an amazing story, and this episode could easily have dived solely into politics, as Richard of course has a ringside perspective. But, instead of doing that, this is a conversation with a powerful politician about being a person, who, in the face of climate change, is just as fragile and small as everyone else. We talk about how Richard keeps motivated, what he's doing in his life to be sustainable and have a lighter footprint, and how he feels about the future. But it's also extremely hopeful, and Richard's perspective is a welcome dose of optimism, and practical pragmatism. He lays out a way forward. Sally Warhaft, Richard Di Natale and Fiona Patten in discussion at the Wheeler Centre — Photo: Jon Tjhia In the 1980s, Australia was an early adopter of free needle syringe distribution programmes. At the height of the AIDS epidemic, this controversial harm-reduction strategy played a crucial role in mitigating the spread of HIV among Australian injecting drug-users. Despite our history of success with harm-reduction approaches, legislators – and large portions of the public – remain squeamish about these policies. Across Australia, parliaments are still more inclined to pass punitive anti-drug laws. But is this working, and is this even cost-effective, in the context of our spreading problems with ice? Richard Di Natale and Fiona Patten both worked, in differing capacities, in public health prior to their careers in politics. Both have been vocal and active with regards to drug legislation since entering parliament. With Sally Warhaft, the pair discuss the possibilities and limitations of harm reduction in Australia. Independent journalist and commentator Michael Brull recently wrote a three-part special report for New Matilda on conflict within the NSW Greens. The piece focuses on a dispute, which eventually made its way to the NSW Supreme Court, over the validity of Cate Faehrmann standing for preselection in the upper house of state parliament. Faehrmann, who won the court case and is now expected to take up the Legislative Council seat vacated by Mehreen Faruqi, is a person of some standing within the party structure, having served as Richard Di Natale’s chief-of-staff from 2015 until March of this year. It’s fair to say the prospect of her nomination was not welcomed by all party members. Indeed, some media commentators, as well as people inside the Greens, have characterised this dispute as one shaped by an ongoing, increasingly bitter civil war between the hard left and so-called moderate factions of the state party branch. Alex Whisson caught up with Michael Brull and began by asking him to outline what the dispute was about and what, in his view, its political significance was.

How would Universal Basic Income work in Australia?

Let’s take a look at a recent Press Club speech from the Australian Greens leader, Dr Richard Di Natale, “With the radical way that the nature of work is changing, along with increasing inequality, our current social security system is outdated…A modern, flexible and responsive safety net would increase their resilience and enable them to make a greater contribution to our community and economy. That’s why we need a Universal Basic Income. We need a UBI that ensures everyone has access to an adequate level of income, as well as access to universal social services, health, education and housing. A UBI is a bold move towards equality... It’s about an increased role for government in our rapidly changing world.” You can find this Press Club speech on the Greens’ website https://greens.org.au/npc-2018   What is Universal Basic Income (UBI) Here in Australia, it has been suggested the government might hand out somewhere around A$20,000 per year to every man and woman (with figures between A$10,000 and A$25,000 discussed). The UBI scheme proposes that the government distribute a flat-rate payment to every adult citizen, without work testing or individual level of participation in the labour market, without job-search requirements or even submission to drug tests and would be implemented as either a partial or complete substitute for social security and welfare programs. Where does it stem from? UBI has returned to the policy agenda as the result of concerns about technological change. Some commentators argue that new technology will permanently reduce the demand for labour leading to job losses, stagnant incomes and worsening inequality. Technological unemployment – a long history During the Renaissance period for example, where a lot of people were put out of work in transcription and textiles with the invention of the printing press in the 15th century and knitting machines in the 16th century Industrial revolution – Steam power, eventually engines Agriculture 1920s – Tractors – A decline from 65% average in the 1500’s, down to 40% in 1800’s. Now it’s down to 1-2%. This is a massive displacement of employment wouldn’t you say? Has employment gone anywhere? Employment at all-time high. More people on the planet than ever, lower unemployment rates. That means, there’s lots of jobs - as tech increases, options increase, jobs increase. Okay, say we do get to the point tech can do everything for us…we may as well collect our income from these robot slaves. Just hope they don’t become self-aware otherwise they might want to keep some of what they work for. How it might work? The numbers – population of 24 million 18+ at $22,000 (Age Pension rate) = $428 billion Is there a solution? Tax more (or borrow): Get rid of Tax free threshold? On top of what we earn? Cost money to collect, so they would have to take more to give back less …20% slippage on their collection costs. The tap will run out! Socialism doesn’t work as eventually there is nobody left to take stuff from. Example – 5 friends in bar Guy #1 spent years working 80-hour weeks, good job now, banker Another went to Uni – comfortable job at 35 hours a week The other 3 are unemployed Every week the 3 who are unemployed ask the guy #1 to buy their drinks, guy #2 gets his own drinks, since he has a job. One week, guy #1 says no, so his friends start laying on the guilt …How long does he go and buy round after round for his friends? Then, when guy #1 stops paying, who is going to pay the bill? Guy #2? After a point, the 3 unemployed guys are suddenly in a much, much worse position because no one is buying the drinks. In the real world That one guy, or top 20% of people, pays 71% of income tax. How long would they keep footing the bill for their friends who are not working? The what about companies? When robots take over and production costs decrease, do they make a tonne more profits? Not necessarily. Lower production costs see in greater competition. Company profits don’t increase in the long term, but prices of goods do drop! Going back to the quotes from the speech… “With the radical way that the nature of work is changing, along with increasing inequality, our current social security system is outdated,” Needing a radical way that will assist everyone with our current social security system. I do agree that it’s a bit outdated and might be looked at in the future…however… “A modern, flexible and responsive safety net would increase people’s resilience and enable them to make a greater contribution to our community and economy.” The part in the speech about being more resilient as a result of this income, its actually the complete opposite when you look at it. Its 100% reliance on the government. Some people may stop being self-reliant and making their own income - that makes you reliant! The government will (apparently) take care of everyone if only you give them the money to do it. In my experience I tend to know how to care for myself in better ways than the government can.   “It’s about an increased role for government in our rapidly changing world.”  Sadly, this is the only true statement in this speech. A better solution Helping each other - why can’t people go back to helping their local community? Kids helping support their parents? It’s hard when a decent chunk of your income goes to funding someone else’s parents as well. Go to financeandfury.com.au to ask a question Unless you want me to cover how different political institutions lead to different conditions of living and equality? Or how legislation to protect consumers leads to an increase in monopolies, hurting them more?

This selfish act by a small number of people in Victoria has ramifications for all of us … because of that these individuals need to face the consequences.” On the future of the Greens, Hanson-Young admitted that while nobody could match Bob Brown’s legacy, it was important the party get behind Di Natale’s leadership - which has been criticised by some Greens figures outside parliament.

The government this week introduced a bill that aims to put a stop to secret agreements between employers and unions without the knowledge of union members. The next hurdle will be the Senate, although it's possible Labor may support the legislation. Employment Minister Michaelia Cash says she is always in discussion with the Senate crossbenchers about the implementation of the recommendations from the Heydon royal commission. “And certainly, I'm always willing to sit down with [Shadow Employment Minister] Brendan O'Connor or Richard Di Natale to discuss the legislation.” Beyond these new measures, Cash suggests the government wants to legislate more recommendations from the royal commission into trade unions. “There are about 50 to 55 left and we are finalising that package as we speak. We are absolutely committed to adopting the Heydon recommendations. "There are further recommendations in relation to what employers and unions should be disclosing in the course of enterprise agreements. There are some recommendations which go to, for example, choice of superannuation fund in enterprise agreements. There are some recommendations which go towards further transparency. Again, we're happy to adopt them all.” Following a ruling by the Fair Work Commission to cut Sunday penalty rates in industries such as hospitality, retail and fast food, some businesses have been reluctant to show strong support for the changes. Cash would like to see more businesses take up the cause. “I believe that if you accept a decision and you embrace the positive benefits and you want to bring people with you, then yes, you should be out there selling that message. "These guys are scared. They are scared that the unions will come and get them.”

Greens leader Richard Di Natale is calling for a re-imagining of the way Australians approach work. “What we're saying is: let's have a look at some of the models around the world,” he says. “It's absolutely possible, as we've seen in places like Sweden, where in the aged care sector people are working a six-hour day rather than an eight-hour day, but they're actually delivering a productivity dividend. They're happier. They're healthier at work. They're actually producing just as much as they would be doing in an eight-hour day.” With the future likely to see many jobs lost to automation, The Greens are keeping an open mind to the notion of “guaranteed adequate incomes”. “It's a system that gives people a wage, irrespective of income. It's not actually means tested. "It makes sure that everybody's got enough to live on. There are a whole range of benefits to the economy. There are few overheads in administering it. So we're looking … at the trials. We're watching them very closely in Canada, in Scotland, in France and so on.” In the wake of an energy crisis, both the federal and South Australian governments are placing a renewed focus on gas in Australia's energy mix. But Di Natale says we're having a debate that “belongs in the last century”. “We shouldn't be spending a cent on new gas infrastructure. We've got some legacy issues with existing gas plants and obviously existing coal-fired power plants. We've got to have a transition plan to make sure we can transition away from old, polluting energy generation to new renewable, clean-green generation. That's the plan that needs to be put in place.”

By the end of 2016, over 100 million people on three continents will be able to access such laws – the most recent places to adopt them being America’s most populous state, California, and Canada. Since that Northern Territory law was overturned in 1997, nearly 30 attempts to create a new one here in Australia have failed.
