Hava Mendelle defies easy categorisation. Openly gay and proudly Jewish, she is a fifteen-year Australian Army veteran, emergency department nurse, published author, and co-founder of Minority Impact — a coalition of Australian minorities united in their opposition to Islamic radicalism and far-left extremism. She writes for The Spectator Australia, The Times of Israel, and The Jewish Independent, and has been making waves on social media for her unflinching commentary on antisemitism, the activist left, and the slow erosion of Australian national identity. In this conversation with Quillette's Zoe Sankey, Hava traces a remarkable personal journey — from an orthodox Jewish childhood and boarding school in Israel, to climate activism and Marxist study groups at university, to her current role as one of Australia's most clear-eyed critics of the movements she once moved in. They discuss the red-green alliance, the activists behind the Gaza flotilla, the radicalisation of the Australian Greens, why the United Nations deserves far more scepticism than it receives, and what October 7th changed — for Hava personally, and for Jewish Australians more broadly Learn more about your ad choices. In his new role as director of the Greens' think-tank, Max Chandler-Mather argues that the major political parties and parts of the media often limit policy debate – which, on issues such as housing and wealth inequality, shuts down real alternatives to the status quo. The former Greens MP and housing spokesperson speaks to political editor Tom McIlroy about returning to policies that improve the lives of Australians in material ways – and why he thinks political nihilism defines One Nation
What's the line in the sand for Albanese to rethink the multibillion-dollar Aukus agreement? Why won't the government implement sanctions on the US and Israel – similar to those imposed on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine? And should the Senate expand to better represent the needs of a growing population, such as in the ACT? Tom McIlroy, Dan Jervis-Bardy, Krishani Dhanji and Josh Butler from Guardian Australia's politics team in Canberra answer questions from listeners and readers
In this bonus episode for Patreon subscribers, Emerald and Tom ask the question on everyone’s mind - why are the Australian Greens not experiencing the wave of support currently happening for the UK Greens, under their new leader Zack Polanski? How can the Aussie version escape its reputation as a bunch of arts degree inner-city elites? And how much of the recent UK success is a result of the place falling apart? Australian politics is going through a new era of political realignment as the centre-right fragments and the traditional two-party system begins to fall apart. In this episode, we examine the leadership change in the National Party, with Matt Canavan replacing David Littleproud, the escalating rivalry with Pauline Hanson's One Nation, and the possible return of Clive Palmer, all of which could further split the conservative vote across regional and outer-suburban Australia. As the Liberal–National Coalition faces growing competition from multiple right-wing parties, we also look at whether the Australian Greens could benefit from any decline in support for the Albanese government, particularly amid economic pressures, housing affordability issues and foreign policy tensions. If current polling trends shift even slightly, Australia could see several parties clustered around similar levels of support, complicating preference flows and coalition politics. The result could be the most unpredictable period in Australian federal politics in decades, raising fundamental questions about the future of the Coalition, the stability of the party system, and what the next Australian federal election could mean for the country's political landscape. #AUSPOL Support New Politics: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/newpoliticsSubstack: https://newpolitics.substack.com Song listing: ‘La Femme d'Argent', AIR.

Protesters around Australia, including Nick McKim and other Greens MPs, gathered to express opposition to the visit of the Israeli president, Isaac Herzog, this week. The Greens senator tells political editor, Tom McIlroy, that the confronting scenes of police aggression towards protesters in Sydney was a “massive overreach”. McKim is the Greens spokesperson for economic justice and treasury, and is now leading a parliamentary inquiry into the 50% capital gains tax discount. Labor has not ruled out possible changes to the generous tax breaks for investors ahead of the May budget. The Tasmanian senator argues that, with Greens' support, the government can “marry up the politics and the policy” to meaningfully addressing the housing crisis

Adam Bandt (pictured) is the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Conservation Foundation and just this week was a "guest" on a webinar organised by the foundation's community organiser, Dan Scaysbrook.Bandt has been the leader of the Australian Greens party, but lost his Melbourne seat in the 2025 Federal Election. His new role at the foundation as CEO sees him taking over from Kelly O'Shannasy, who had fulfilled that role for more than a decade. This statement appeared last year on the ACF website:Following more than a decade of outstanding service at the helm of Australia's national environment organisation, trailblazing leader Kelly O'Shanassy has announced she will step down as CEO of the Australian Conservation Foundation at the end of 2025.“It's been an honour to lead this powerhouse organisation and serve Australians who love nature and want climate action. It's a hard decision to step away — but unlike solar and wind, CEO energy is not renewable, and it's time for a break.“I leave knowing we have created so much impact for nature and people. Together we've protected ancient forests from bulldozers, saved world heritage reefs and wetlands from being dredged, stopped toxic waste dumps and helped return a million hectares of Country to Traditional Owners. “We've shaped new laws to cut climate pollution and boost renewables and made climate action a resounding feature of Australian politics and business.”ACF President Ros Harvey said Ms O'Shanassy leaves a lasting legacy at ACF and should be proud of her role in making a stronger, more powerful and more inclusive organisation.“Kelly has cultivated a welcoming and empowering culture within ACF and the broader environmental movement and has always led with great vision, compassion and integrity.“Under Kelly's stewardship, ACF created more than 40 ACF community groups across the country and attracted more than half a million new supporters, from cities, farms, the bush, the beach and mining communities,” she said. As the second woman to lead the Australian Conservation Foundation, Ms O'Shanassy helped shatter the glass ceiling within the environment movement and has been deeply committed to making the organisation more inclusive and equitable for everyone. “Great organisations are not just about their CEO, they are about every person being the best they can be – our staff, our community and the other NGOs we get to work with every day,” Ms O'Shanassy said.“We have vast challenges still before us. 2030 is fast approaching, Australia's emissions trajectory is a long way from 1.5° aligned, and the gas industry is still pushing to expand. “Australia's threatened species list is growing. Stronger nature protection laws remain the big unfinished business and winning them will be ACF's focus in the crucial first 12 months of the new parliament.” “There is so much more to do, and we need big, bold action more than ever,” she said.

Larissa Waters has been at the helm of the Greens since the federal election saw former leader Adam Bandt unexpectedly lose his seat. Last week, her party secured a deal with Labor to pass new environment laws – a deal her predecessor didn't deliver. The senator talks to Reged Ahmad about what it was like taking over after the dramatic election loss earlier this year and why she compromised to get the reforms over the line.
In conversation with political editor Tom McIlroy, deputy leader of the Greens Mehreen Faruqi says a neo-Nazi rally in front of NSW parliament this month caused fear for many Australians – and the federal government is yet to respond to recommendations for a national framework for anti-racism. And with both houses of parliament returning for their last sitting week for the year, Faruqi says a possible decision by Labor to team up with the Coalition – rather than the Greens – to pass nature law reforms next week would lack credibility, especially when the opposition has now decided to ditch a commitment to net zero emissions by 2050

Earlier this month the Greens officially terminated the membership of one of its founders. Drew Hutton, the expelled member, criticised the party as ‘authoritarian', claiming it is silencing members who challenge its official policies on gender identity – but the party says it will not tolerate harmful commentary within its membership. Queensland state reporter Joe Hinchcliffe tells Nour Haydar why the Greens have terminated Drew Hutton's life membership over debate that the party considers harmful to trans people, but which Hutton has framed as an issue of free speech
Drew Hutton says the party he co-founded has become a ‘cult’. We unpack how he was kicked to the curb – and why he’s vowing revenge. Find out more about The Front podcast here. The new leader of the Australian Greens, Senator Larissa Waters from Queensland talks about her vision for the party, the challenges of a shifting political landscape, and why she believes this is a moment for bold reforms Labor must rewrite current environment laws which ‘facilitate development', says Larissa Waters
The Labor government continues to provide economic, diplomatic and military support to Israel's genocide in Gaza and now Iran. We know that they signed a $917 million dollar deal with Israeli weapons company Elbit systems early last year. We know that the Heat Treatment Australia facility in Campbellfield provides crucial treatment for components of F-35 Joint Strike fighters. Now, more than ever, we need to put pressure on our own politicians to end all military exports to Israel and cut all diplomatic and economic ties. In Melbourne's inner city local municipality of Merri-bek, a group of committed Free Palestine activists organised a rally against sitting Labor MP, Peter Khalil, who was recently been promoted as Assistant Minister for Defence. The rally took place on the cold winter's night of Friday June 13th and today's episode of Accent of Women brings you some speeches from that rally. The Rally chair is Bella Beiraghi of students for Palestine and the first speaker is Samantha Ratnam from the Australian Greens who challenged Peter Khalil in the once safe Labor seat of Wills, turning it into one of the most marginal seats in the state of Victoria.
