On today's show, David Leyonhjelm talks about Australian gun rights in the face of tyranny put upon Australian people in relation to policies pushed through parliament without debate such as recent Digital ID laws as social media observers worldwide cry out that it is because of our gun ban, the government seems to walk all over its people. Sarah Hanson-Young's biggest and most public battle with sexism came via a defamation lawsuit against former Liberal-Democrat senator David Leyonhjelm. A targeted media blitz in 2018 put her at the centre of a slut-shaming campaign. But the war started long before and has been raging since she entered politics aged just 25. Behind the closed doors of parliament, Senator Hanson-Young reveals a constant barrage of misogyny and sexualised bullying which has largely remained undisturbed - until now. Attorney-General Christian Porter has just lodged a defamation action against the ABC. And recently, the full Federal Court upheld a $120,000 damages payout to Senator Sarah Hanson Young by former Senator David Leyonhjelm. Also, new research on who is most likely to commit a serious crime. A former prisoner or former forensic hospital patient?

They hold the greatest powers in society. They make laws, talk to the press, address the public and perform the 'good citizen'. They're sometimes corrupt, sometimes stupid, sometimes greedy, always performative. In mid-2020, we're still cataloging the daily, harmfully innocuous remarks male politicians make against women; be it their peers or women across society. Why are so many of them so conservative, so heterosexual, so, basic? Plus, we share our own creepy experiences with sexism. Jessie talks about the insidious virtual signalling of heterosexual fatherhood. Helen talks about Taipei's mayor Ko Wen-Je and his quotidian sexism. Show Notes: You Should Expect Rape Threats (Julia Gillard, ABC, 2016) Sarah Hanson-Young accuses David Leyonhjelm of sexism at defamation trial (Sarah-Hanson Young, The Guardian, 2019) She Doesn't have that Presidential Look ( Hillary Clinton 2018) Malaysia issues apology after telling women to “stop nagging” (Malaysia's Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, 2020) Japanese mayor says men should grocery shop during pandemic as women 'take a longer time' (Ichiro Matsui, CNN, 2020) Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir was the first openly gay leader back in 2009 - Iceland (US.News, 2017) Ke Wen-Zhe continuous with his sexist remarks; "Because I was used to scold the nurses on daily basis.(New Talk, 2020) Ke Wen-Zhe sexist remarks chaos: The naked truth of gender discrimination (New Talk, 2019) The negativity of Ke Wen-Zhe's 'mis-spoke' comments; alienation perspectives on the oppressions women encounter (2019) Man who returns with a 25kg bag of salt (SETN, 2020) Facebook | Asian Bitches Down Under Instagram | Asian Bitches Down Under
In this week’s episode of Trans Tasman Talk, Tim and Dieuwe discuss the latest local political news and who seems to be running the nations on either side of the Tasman: Chinese Communists or local bureaucrats? Revelations in Australia have shown that the Chinese Communist Party tried to plant a spy as a Liberal MP. There is some actual journalism being done as Australian media investigates, but on the other side of the ditch, the reaction to CCP influence is always far more muted. In New Zealand, American comedian Stephen Colbert was on a state-funded visit to do PR with Jacinda Ardern and announce that he’ll move to New Zealand for real next year – but Tim and Dieuwe don’t think he’ll give up his 15m salary. Former Australian senator David Leyonhjelm has lost a defamation suit that Sarah Hanson-Young of the Greens took against him. The court ruled that he owes her $120,000 for implying she was a misandrist and a hypocrite in comments he made about her in the media after a Senate chamber dispute. Hanson Young claimed she’d been slut-shamed, but if progressives believe that being a slut isn’t a bad thing, how can she have been shamed? In New Zealand, the legal feud between NZ First and National continues as threats of fraud and lawsuits continue to fly. It’s all about the donors, and by now it’s more than clear enough that both parties have special interests buying up influence. The extent to which the bureaucracy is running and how disconnected MPs often are have been highlighted by Scott Morrison’s office having transgender bathrooms, which he quickly ordered dismantled after their existence was revealed. Morrison’s image seems to be starting to fade as he shows little tangible progress on the issues that got him elected. A Westpac scandal has rocked Australia where it’s been revealed that 25 million illegal transactions for sex traffickers and paedophiles had been approved by the bank amounting to 11 billion in revenue. The CEO has since resigned and been given a 2.7m “golden handshake” after he made statements that the breach was not an issue for everyday Australians and seemed more concerned that they’d have to cancel their Christmas party. In a more lighthearted story to round out the show, we see that 25% of Kiwibuild homes have not sold on the market, nor will Housing NZ attempt to acquire them. Comrade Jacinda is building houses that even her own government won’t buy. One of the major battlegrounds in the upcoming NSW state election will be for the Upper House. After March 23, centre-right minor parties are likely to hold the balance of power. It raises the issue of why third parties matter. As the broader Liberal-National coalition shows increasing signs of splintering, what third party best represents the path to a sound governing and legislative agenda at both state and federal levels? Mark Latham, former federal Labor leader and One Nation candidate, Senator David Leyonhjelm, outgoing Liberal Democratic Party senator and LDP candidate along with Dr Greg Walsh, Australian Conservatives candidate are all vying for seats in the NSW Upper House this election and formed our panel. Miranda Devine Columnist for the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph moderated the panel and delved into that question of why third parties matter. Why is tolerance for abuse so much higher in parliament than in any other job/industry in Australia? This week Lane and Alice are bowled over by news from New Zealand: Jacinda Ardern of “Jacindamania” fame will be the next prime minister! Lane talks to “yes” campaign leader Tiernan Brady about what he thinks the REAL slippery slope is and double standards in the postal survey, Alice asks David Leyonhjelm what he reckons about the government’s welfare drug testing, and there are several jokes about people negging the NEG.
This is the story of what happens when a free speech advocate attempts to use 18C to restrict what another person can say. In August 2016, Liberal Democrat David Leyonhjelm was interviewed on the ABC’s Insiders where he said offence is always taken, not given and if you don’t want to be offended by something that is up to you.Fairfax journalist Mark Kenny happened to be watching that very interview and decided to test Leyonhjelm’s proposition to the fullest. The result was a colourful 18C case that showed just how the law is working.
On March 30, a late-night debate in the Senate saw the Government's attempt to change section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act reach defeat, after an alliance by Labor, Greens, Nick Xenophon’s team and Jacqui Lambie, voted down the proposed changes - 31 to 28.This means that the plan to remove ‘offend, insult or humiliate” from section 18C and replace it with the term “harass” will no longer go ahead. Although we do expect to see some changes to the processes of the Human Rights Commission.Just Words producer Myles Houlbrook-Walk spoke to Senator David Leyonhjelm on March 21, a week prior to the bills defeat.

Nick Xenophon's two new Senate colleagues, Stirling Griff and Skye Kakoschke-Moore, are no strangers to the political process, having both worked with Xenophon behind the scenes. In a joint interview, they tell Michelle Grattan about their contrasting experiences in becoming politicians. Kakoschke-Moore says she has had the benefit of being around Xenophon for nearly six years. “So I understand the way he operates,” she says. Working as a Xenophon adviser, she learnt the ropes of the Senate. “It is so rule-driven and so procedure-driven that I have a great deal of sympathy for people coming into this who have had no exposure at all to the inner workings of Senate procedure.” Stirling Griff, on the other hand, has had a “huge learning curve”. “I'm following behind Skye like she's the mother hen and I imagine I'll be doing that really for another few more weeks,” he says. With the government's industrial relations legislation before the parliament, the Nick Xenophon Team is looking for some amendments. “Particularly in relation to the building code and requiring building projects, to the greatest extent possible, to use Australian goods and services. So we'll be looking at the bills closely but we'll also be keeping an open mind to amendments,” Kakoschke-Moore says. The pair are dismissive of any move by senator David Leyonhjelm to push for concessions on gun laws in exchange for passage of the industrial relations bills. “They're not related and we don't want to play those games,” Griff says.

Liberal Democrat senator David Leyonhjelm has accused Malcolm Turnbull of failing to live up to his promise to liaise closely with the Senate crossbenchers. As the "micro" players react furiously to the government's proposed Senate voting changes, Leyonhjelm tells Michelle Grattan he has not heard from Turnbull since his call in his first week as prime minister. Despite the "reservoir of goodwill" he enjoyed on taking over, Turnbull did not follow through. The Coalition government has been appallingly bad at negotiating with the crossbenchers, Leyonhjelm says. Unlike the Gillard government, which negotiated successfully with lower house crossbenchers, the Abbott and Turnbull governments never learnt how to do it. Leyonhjelm and the other "micro" Senate players have been invited to dinner at The Lodge this week. They are ready to vent their sense of grievance to Turnbull face-to-face.

She says in that time the ABCC would demonstrably prove its worth in curbing lawlessness in the construction industry and improving productivity. In the aftermath of the trade union royal commission, Cash talks about a restored ABCC's powers, proposed revamped registered organisations legislation and double dissolution triggers. Cash, also Minister for Women, outlines plans for promoting gender equality in the public service and calls on the Liberal Party across Australia to undertake “audits” on female participation.

We need to let them know that burning native forests for energy is anything but renewable and will drive more deforestation and species extinction.Phoning an MP isn't hard, nor is sending a short email to register your objection to including native forest wood in the RET as an eligible fuel source.
