The Trump administration has prioritized nuclear energy expansion, aiming to increase US nuclear capacity fourfold by 2050. This nuclear energy resurgence in the US is a rare issue with bipartisan support, and tech companies have poured billions of dollars into sustaining nuclear power plants and building new reactors to supply AI data centers. But accelerating nuclear power could mean changing environmental and safety reviews. And small modular reactors and other innovations in nuclear energy are likely years from commercial readiness. So is there a way to reinvigorate nuclear energy in the US that's safe and fast? What would that mean for the power sector and the communities that support plants today, and future sites? Are there any signs that new technologies could address the perennial questions around nuclear safety? And what does all of this mean for national security and energy policy? Today on the show, Bill Loveless speaks with Laura S. H. Holgate, Ambassador (ret.) about the state of nuclear energy innovation, safety, and governance. Laura is the president of LSHH International Advisors and a distinguished visiting fellow at the Center on Global Energy Policy. She twice served as ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency. She has held multiple positions in and out of government, including vice president at the Nuclear Threat Initiative, special assistant to the president at the White House National Security Council, and a senior official at the departments of Energy and Defense. This end-of-year RaboTalk Growing our Future episode features Blake Holgate and Katie Rodwell reflecting on a year that has challenged our food and fibre sector to adapt. They share insights from conversations they've held with farmers and industry leaders and discuss key themes which have ranged from farmer resilience, the value of open dialogue, the power of working with family and how sustainability conversations have matured. This episode wraps up the year with optimism for the future as they discuss opportunities ahead, especially with on farm efficiencies and agri tech.Like what you've heard? Follow our podcast for more great content.Show Notes:In this special end-of-year episode, Blake and Katie look back on a busy 2024 for food and fibre, discuss the key themes that emerged from conversations with farmers and industry leaders, and share what they're looking forward to in 2025. From farmer resilience and market shifts to the role of teamwork in good business, this episode wraps up the year with honest reflections and optimism for the future.A Year of Rapid Change in Food and FibreBlake and Katie open by acknowledging how turbulent the past year has been across the rural sector. Policy shifts, fluctuating markets and a challenging operating environment have shaped decision-making on farm and prompted farmers to rethink aspects of their business. Despite that volatility, both hosts heard strong examples of farmers adapting, up-skilling and staying focused on what they can control.Leadership and Learning Through ConversationOne of the standout themes for Blake this year has been the value of conversation. Through interviewing a range of guests, he's noticed that many of the most effective operators share a commitment to listening, asking questions and continually learning. Katie agrees, reflecting on how different perspectives from across the value chain have broadened her thinking and highlighted the importance of open dialogue during change. The Power of Diverse VoicesKatie's highlight has been the number of younger and emerging leaders stepping forward. Whether through Future Farmers NZ, Nuffield scholars or on-farm innovators, she's encouraged by the energy and purpose coming from the next generation. Both hosts note that having a mix of ages, backgrounds and roles at the table leads to better decisions and a more resilient sector.Taking a Team ApproachAnother recurring insight is the strength that comes from teamwork. Guests repeatedly emphasised the importance of bringing partners, staff, advisers and family along for the journey. Blake notes that the most successful farm businesses are not solo efforts; they're built on clear communication, shared goals and backing each other through the tough periods.Opportunities on the HorizonLooking ahead, Blake is optimistic about the opportunities in front of New Zealand farmers. Market signals continue to evolve, and while pressure remains, he believes the sector is well-positioned to capture value through efficiency, quality and strong relationships with consumers and processors. Katie adds that she's excited to keep telling stories of innovation and progress, especially as agri-tech solutions become more accessible and farmers look for tools that support better decision-making.Appreciating the Rural CommunityBoth hosts close by acknowledging the privilege of sitting down with so many farmers and sector leaders throughout the year. The generosity, honesty and passion of the rural community continue to inspire them. They express their thanks to listeners for tuning in, sharing feedback and helping shape the direction of the podcast.Key TakeawayDespite a challenging year, there is...

People are making tough choices at the supermarket to keep costs down. A new report reveals the average weekly spend per household is now $240 – an increase of only $2 from 2023. To cut costs, 31% of are buying less groceries, 48% are downgrading on brands, and 30% are looking for specials. Head of Sustainable Business Development at Rabobank, Blake Holgate told Mike Hosking the results are unsurprising, as wage inflation has not increased at the same rate as food inflation. He says people have had to make cuts or choices, and that's what they're seeing come through in these results. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Gregor Robertson thinks Ollie Watkins is the complete striker. Alyson Rudd thinks Ivan Tony has international class.Rasmus Hojlund has turned a corner and is now the youngster player to score in six consecutive premier league games, will it be enough to drag Man Utd into the top four… Timeline: Title race2' Across two games Chelsea were really good. Rabobank's head of sustainable business development says recent research, in association with food charity KiwiHarvest, shows households now spend an average of $238 a week on food (up 9 per cent from a year ago), and 21 per cent spend more than $300 a week.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
New Zealand's food waste remains high despite a cost-of-living crisis. A Rabobank-KiwiHarvest survey estimates that $3.2 billion of food goes in the bin annually. Households waste 12.2% of groceries yearly, a slight decrease from last year's 13.4%. Sustainable Business Development Head, Blake Holgate, told Mike Hosking that as food becomes more expensive, the value of what is thrown out increases. He said that despite the reduction in waste, in terms of total value food waste has actually increased. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We ask Rabobank's head of sustainable business development if “woke” banks imposing climate-related risk margins upon farmers when the sector is under growing financial strain, is fair and equitable. Meet Ancara Holgate and learn about her journey as a storyteller. I was born and raised on the sun-bathed tropical island Jamaica, until I moved to the UK as a teenager. As a happily married mother of two, I have worked in various jobs: as a qualified business administrator, hairdresser, in retail as a qualified manager – and I've had a 16-year run in health and social care. I enjoy dancing, singing, dining out and helping others. But one day I discovered that my love for writing would prove invaluable in helping me deal with the challenges of my mum being diagnosed with MS. The writing kept me going and I found it therapeutic. I continued putting pen to paper until finally, through unrelenting encouragement and support from my aunt, with whom I shared my stories (and is sadly no longer with us), I decided to published my stories for children. But instead of inviting you to get a copy of the short guide to working less and living better - also known as The Five Easy Ways to Start Living a Sabbatical Life, I've got something else. You've heard my guests and me talking this season about sabbaticals and I've shared a bit about the one I took last August. One of the opportunities that came to me when I wasn't working was this amazing business partnership. That has developed to the point where my partners and I are actively acquiring personal development businesses or assets this year. So my question for you this week is – do you know anyone with a personal development business who is looking to get out? Alternatively, if you know someone who is still all-in and interested in making extra money through some JV opportunities promoting other people's offers, I'd love an intro to them too. Hit me up if you have someone in mind. Text is 571.317.1463 or Lori@ZenRabbit.com.Produced by Nova Media
Portland's Central library in the heart of the city's downtown is by far its biggest branch. It also provides internet and other services to those who may be experiencing homelessness or just want to duck in to get out of the elements. Some bond funded renovations started last year, but now the building will close while various updates get completed. The Albina branch will be closing temporarily for construction later this week, followed by the North Portland branch in early April. The Holgate and Midland branches are currently closed for renovations. Taxpayer backed bonds are also funding a huge brand new library in Gresham. Katie O'Dell has worked at the Multnomah County Library for much of her career and she's currently the capital bond deputy director there. She joins us to tell us about what's happening system-wide and the plans the library has made to backfill services while some of these critical facilities are getting remade.
