With the weather warming, crossing a bridge doesn't feel quite so impossible. So if you want to go out and party this weekend, where should you go? Pittsburgh has options — Spirit, Belvedere's, Cavo, and Club VIP — but the ‘Burgh used to have way more nightclubs that catered to a wider diversity of party-goers. We're with City Paper's Colin Williams about what happened to Pittsburgh's nightlife scene. **This episode originally published on January 10, 2024. Bio: maxiu is a DJ/producer who recently joined to the Detroit scene. Growing up as a classical and jazz clarinetist, his first introduction to electronic music culture was from China's booming underground club scene, and he eventually performed several times at DADA Beijing. At the same time, he was very much exposed to hiphop style DJing and turntablism. After moving to the US, he got heavily involved in Pittsburgh's techno scene and frequented after hour club Hot Mass. He became the Business Manager and radio DJ at WRCT 88.3FM Pittsburgh from 2018-2020, and hosted a weekly show “Couchlock” focusing on ambient electronic music. maxiu's passion in mixing evolves around texture and sculpting dreamy soundscapes, as he plays with an eclectic blend of faster paced techno, electro, and IDM. Tempered by years of sweat in the US rave and club circuit, Paul Fleetwood has steadily built a reputation as a DJ who explores the shuffling grooves of techno, electro, acid and beyond. He currently resides in Denver but is originally from Pittsburgh, where he is a co-founder and resident of world renowned weekly party Hot Mass. As a DJ he connects the dots between deep, propulsive techno, trippy experimental rhythms and intergalactic synth led electro jams. His approach to selecting and mixing has featured in online mixes for Buttons, Silent Season, Mysteries of the Deep, Doc Sleep's Jacktone Radio, and now The Bunker NYC. Fleetwood has played to audiences across the Midwest predominantly at DIY parties but also in clubs such as Chicago's Smartbar, Detroit's Tangent Gallery, Washington DC's Flash, and further afield at Berlin's Griessmuehle and ://about blank. Wherever he plays, he utilizes his lifelong musical curatorial ear and penchant for fanatical record digging to bring fervor to dancefloors across the world.
Beauty Slap is a “future-brass-thunder-funk machine” from Pittsburgh, PA. In this episode, “Chef Jake” Berntsen and Hakeem Bilal discussed their rise to world domination, how they design every aspect of their product with clear intent, and how five guys can go from a university-setting to playing for over 300,000 people at the Indy 500. Umfang aka Emma Olson is one of the most influential figures in today’s techno scene. As co-founder of the Discwoman collective the American is doing essential work promoting female DJs. Of course, her own productions and DJ sets also further the cause as they lead by example and mix raw tension with experimental eeriness. So far coming on labels like 1080p and Allergy Season, videogamemusic, and Phinery, Emma has also played seven hour sets at Hot Mass in Pittsburgh and holds a monthly residency at Technofeminism at Bossa Nova Civic Club. Next to that, the youngster just dropped her new, promising album Symbolic Use Of Light on Technicolour. Clocking in at just over an hour, Umfang’s mix for us is filled with eerie and unusual rhythms that are often hugely roomy but underpinned by solid kicks. As the pressure builds, so does the tension, and by the mid point that boils over into raw and visceral drum tracks before falling apart into a flurry of distorted sounds, percussive hits and frazzled synths. Uncompromising and packing a lot in during a short space of time, it’s an eye opening mix that leaves you in a blissful place after a busy workout.
Aaron Clark is a key member of the Honcho and Humanaut crews, an excellent DJ, and one of the main reasons Hot Mass has become the force that it has. He will appear behind the decks this Saturday, Mar. 25, alongside Peggy Gou, Mike Gushansky, and Chvck, as As You Like It takes over San Francisco club Audio.
