Upon obtaining his Master's degree he somehow stumbled his way into the wonderous world of whiskey distillation. And once he started working with stills, he never looked back. Since then, he has built numerous distilleries both as a distiller and as a consultant. He also began teaching the science and art of distillation through numerous organizations throughout the United States, Canada, and the UK. In an effort to further the field of whiskey education he has authored countless articles, webinars, and talks. He has also written two highly regarded books for the industry, Cask Management for Distillers (White Mule Press, 2020) and Batch Distillation: Science and Practice (White Mule Press, 2021). Matt lives in Pittsburgh with his wife and two precocious daughters. His hobbies include rock climbing and shopping for cars his wife will never let him buy. Bradd Williamson and Patrick Moore are proving that when you find your people, big things can happen, even if it's about 1:160 scale. After an accidental hijacking of a fellow N scalers group, they started the Iron City N Scale Facebook group, which led to a modular group with just one rule. Building upon the success of the group, Bradd and Pat started the Iron City Roundhouse Report podcast, giving a voice to the group and adding another way for Iron City to reach around the planet.Learn more about this episode on our website:aroundthelayout.com/181Thank you to our episode sponsor, Spring Creek Model Trains:https://www.springcreekmodeltrains.com/Thank you to our episode sponsor, HomeShops Freelance Forum:https://homeshops.net/Thank you to our episode sponsor, Tully Models:https://tullymodels.com

In Part 1 of this week's Next on the Tee, I had the pleasure of visiting Pittsburgh Brewing Company and sitting down with their amazing Marketing Director, Rachel Gill. Rachel shares the story behind the evolution of this iconic brand—it's not just your grandfather's Iron City anymore. While staying true to classics like Iron City and IC Light, they're also brewing exciting craft selections like Pool Side and Block House Blueberry Wheat. We talk about their stunning new facility, built on the historic site of the old Pittsburgh Glass Works, and their impressive on-site concert venue that's quickly becoming a must-visit destination—set to host country legends Alabama during U.S. Open week and Joan Jett later this summer. Then I got a surprise guest—Rosalie Wisotzski, a spirited golfer who's played Oakmont and just returned from a dream trip to St. Andrews. She, her stories, perspective, and love of the game were absolutely captivating. I'm so glad she stopped by—you will be too. It's a fun, inspiring, and very Pittsburgh kind of episode.
Iron City Distilling (Creighton, PA) WF0057 It's time to head back to Pennsylvania, to visit one of the only three chamber stills in America and experience another side of Monongahela Rye. Join me as I chat with master distiller Matt Strickland and company president Peter Katz about how Iron City Beer got into the distilling world, discuss my experience at the distillery, and find out how you learn to distill on a piece of equipment that had gone extinct. Plus we'll learn a bit about the tours at this old PPG factory and how the beer interacts with the whiskey side. Plus, Experiencing Kentucky Bourbon second edition is out on Amazon (and next week it will be available everywhere else). Some details to come. You can learn more at whiskey-lore.com/books
I need 20 pierogis and 50 ccs of Iron City beer to the ER STAT!Welcome to the Pitt! A phrase probably no one wants to hear outside of this context. Join us as we strap to the gurney and wheel into arguably one of the most chaotic shows of all time. From the mind of ER and JAG alum R. Scott Gemmill, The Pitt takes us to a mid city hospital run by ER star Noah Wale, Tracy Ifeachor, Patrick Ball, Katherine LaNasa and so many more terrific actors. What drives the fervor of the Pitt fandom seems to be the realistic stakes and nature of the ER, combined with the linear time of the entire season taking place on one shift. So who better to talk to than Friend of the Pod Dr. Raul Flores as our official Chief Medical Examiner. Pull up a chair, we have a very busy day in Pittsburgh.

There's More To Western Pennsylvania Than The Whiskey Rebellion! If you're a whiskey nerd of any level, of course you know this, but it's worth saying again. Previous guests such as Wigle Whiskey and Liberty Pole Spirits have done excellent work exploring the Whiskey Rebellion's place in history and its importance to the area - so if you're a new distillery looking to find your niche, you better bring something new or different to the table. When Matt Strickland had the opportunity to return stateside from his time at Distillerie Cotes de Saints, the call came from Pittsburgh, but he had a question: what does success look like? And what will set us apart? Before a drop was distilled or a brick laid, the answer became clear: revive a style of rye (or multiple styles, more accurately) using heritage grains, a pot still, and a three-chamber still, only the second active one in the US and third in the world. Working with only Pennsylvania farmers (including previous guest Bob McDonald) and thought leaders like Laura Fields, Matt built out the distillery with the blessings of his bosses to make it authentic and make it right, efficiency be damned. Bringing in historically accurate features like 38-43 gallon barrels and brick, steam-heated warehouses similar to what they would have used in the 19th and early 20th centuries, The Iron City Team is creating a new, old, new again style of whiskey. We have a bit more time before the whiskies are ready for the public, but I'm as excited as anyone to try them. Matt will also be back to talk more about his writing and education after delving a bit into his work in this episode, so more to come! Thank you to Matt for entering the Whiskey Ring! Nothing says Pittsburgh Steelers than someone who is able to share their in depth insights from the Steel City itself than Smitty from the Around the 412 podcast. There is no downtime in the NFL so we will talk with Smitty about free agency thus far, the draft and rookie camp, OTA's and of course the pending summer camp to officially kick things off for the 2024 season, in my opinion. Grab an Iron City and a Chipped Ham sandwich and listen as we pick Smitty's brain for the latest on the Stillers. Spontaneous Reactions: Bio: Main Segment: OC Arthur Smith is in charge with a new offensive: • What are your thoughts on what you've seen so far in camp/OTA's? • YEA OR NAY?? 2) Russ was tagged as QB1: has Russ looked like he's got a grasp on the offense? 3) Is Fields getting many reps/looks with 1st team? • Do he and Russ communicate a lot on schemes or different reads? 4) Khan did a great job in this year's draft: What's the progression of Fautanu been like on the O line? 5) Roman Wilson, he's always been applauded for his route running, in camp as he been more of a slot or Wr2: Does he remind you of Heinz Ward? (Not flashy/not huge size but he's tough, blocks well, and isn't afraid of contact.) 6) Payton Wilson NC State LB: • I'm hearing good things so far. • Is he as good as advertised: 6'3, 4.4 speed? 7) Cam Heyward: No doubt a leader on the team, Water Payton man of the year winner, He's absent in OTA's, lots of time left, but from what you're hearing, will an extension get done? 8) With Watt/Heyward/Queen/Minkah you've technically got ALL PROS on each level: Do you think the Steelers can realistically have a TOP 5-6 ranked defense this season? 9) Schedule is out, we all know Steelers got it rough, Extremely Tough: right now, today, what is your prediction for Steelers 2024 season record? 10) What games of the Steelers, in particular, are you looking forward too and why? • What are 2-3 OTHER NFL games, in general, are you interested in seeing this upcoming season? 11) Steelers fans are excited and ready for this upcoming season: Do you believe we have good reason to be so optimistic or are we all just being “Homers” about our Steelers? 12) What 1-2 UNDRAFTED FREE AGENTS that have sort of opened a few eyes in OTA's? 13) Great draft made moves in free agency: If the Steelers/ Tomlin DON'T GET A PLAYOFF WIN THIS YEAR, is the season a disappointment? 14) Has there been a player or 2 that HAS NOT had a particularly good showing so far “draft pick/ veteran” or “free agent”? This week we're turning our eye on the Iron City. We touch on everything from local food and drink to, of course, the sports teams. Joining us are a couple of local ringers: Kyle Chrise and Greg Benevent from the What Yinz Talkin' Bout, which is a lively conversation about the Steelers social media conversation.
Mother Earth tried to stop this episode from coming out, but we are back after yet another extended absence. Yes, this episode was so powerful the gods tried to silence it by knocking out the power THREE TIMES during this recording. But despite Sean's audio being dealt a mortal wound (it's fine, you'll get over it), we got this thing across the finish line, and this time Sean brought a heater of a topic: "Go to the Head of the Class", the infamous season two episode Steven Spielberg's NBC anthology show Amazing Stories. This episode stars Mary Stuart Masterson, podcast spectre Tom Bresnahan, and Christopher Lloyd as the insane Professor Beans. Not only that, but it has Robert Zemeckis directing AND Stan Winston doing special effects. A true murderer's row on display here. And what has brought these titans together? A little story about satanic panic, severed heads, and SEX! This one's a wild ride for sure, but as is tradition on this show, Brad and Sean get caught up in what punk stickers adorn our hero's totally accurate, not a Hollywood invention in any way Super Rad Bedroom. It all culminates in a very Brad rant about how awful prestige television is and how it has taken away the good things about television, like Earth 2 and Manimal. We also discuss the various music challenges we've undertaken (and in Brad's case, failed at) in recent weeks, hot dog relishes, and winning at fake slots. We even premiere a new segment on the show: our semi-regular (?) Detroit Lions update called Honolulu Blue Notes. However, even when talking about the Lions, the two manage to discuss Raiders QB Aidan O'Connell and how he looks like he hangs out at the all-night gas station at 4AM. Its a good show, so check it out. --- Website: www.queenvenerator.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/queenvenerator/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/queenvenerator.bsky.social

What happens when two guys from Pennsylvania who claim to be lone wolfs in the hobby, take over a Facebook page from a third modeler and then realize what they've done?? This is the heartwarming tale of Patrick Moore (the other guy) and Bradd Williamson from Crater, Pennsylvania, formerly known as Oval, Pennsylvania nestled in the sleepy valley of Nippenose. From the first time they met until present day, the relationship between Patrick and Bradd reads like the finest “Harlequin” romance novel ever written. Together they created the “Iron City N-Scale” group that's gone from just two members to well over six hundred and continues growing each day. Fellowship is the name of the game for these two model railroaders, and we're glad they stopped by to share their story.
It's our Tuesday news roundup! We're catching up on where things stand one year after a train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio. The big Iron City billboard is back, and we're diving into the history of this Pittsburgh hillside. Some local kids were featured in the Pro Bowl, plus we're wondering why the new Downtown Pittsburgh potties are already going away. We're working on an upcoming show about where to take yourself on a perfect Pittsburgh date. Call or text us with your solo date ideas at 412-212-8893 and leave your name and neighborhood to be featured on the pod! We always cite our sources: Pittsburgh's removing its mobile trailer bathrooms and opening up more permanent bathrooms Downtown. Read Oliver Morrison's work about how residents of East Palestine feel a year after the Norfolk Southern train derailment. As part of a series on the train derailment, The Allegheny Front published a story about a stream in East Palestine that remains polluted. Ohio's Attorney General released a statement focusing on the answers they're looking for in the National Transportation Safety Board's investigation into the root cause of the derailment. The Iron City sign is back, and of course, Pittsburghers weighed in on what they want to see on Mount Washington. Hey Pittsburgh covered the history of the IC Beer billboard — it was once the largest neon sign in the world! Have kids interested in flag football? Shownotes:Eddie and Chris join music legend Mac McAnally in a delightful conversation about music, making your mark, and leaving the world a better place than you found it. Mac is a native of Belmont, Mississippi, but he's better known as a country music singer, songwriter, session musician, and record producer. He is an award-winning talent who has worked with country stars Kenny Chesney and Sawyer Brown, and he is a long-time member of Jimmy Buffett's band, The Coral Reefers.Mac's career started at just 13 years old, when his parents allowed him to play piano in a honky tonk bar in Iron City, Tennessee. He left high school in the 11th grade to pursue his music career (which, even though it worked out for him down the line, he wouldn't encourage anyone else to do). He sees his role in the music industry as being “Johnny Musicseed,” carrying the responsibility of helping up-and-coming artists realize their dreams.Resources:Find Mac online and on social media: Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, and Spotify.Find his latest album, “Once in a Lifetime,” here.
This week, I will be the FIRST to sit down to interview the man behind every Pittsburgher's favorite Twitter account! The Pittsburgh Scanner is a Twitter account (that now has an Instagram account you should follow!) devoted to being the ears of our fine city! This Yinzer knight in shining armor spends his free time in his basement, drinking Iron City and listening to Pittsburgh's Police Scanners, all while documenting the most urgent and important situations happening around us. If yinz follow the account then you know exactly the type of content I'm talking about. - These tweets are not fabricated by any means. These are actual situations happening in the city that have came through the police scanner. No embellishment needed in our great city. Content writes itself - This man wishes to remain anonymous but he has put his trust in me and agreed to come on the podcast to talk about all the good work he does on the @pgh_scanner account. If you want to support the Pittsburgh Scanner, you can vote for them as “Best Twitter Account” in the Pittsburgh City Paper's ‘Best Of' competition. - Become a "friend" on Patreon and support the show
