Send us a textThis week, we take a look at the media frenzy surrounding basketball star Larry Bird during his undefeated season at Indiana State.  Bird's refusal to engage with the media created a unique challenge for Ed McKee, the school's sports information director. McKee was inundated with requests from various outlets, from major publications to niche magazines, all eager to speak with the star player. However, Bird's silence forced McKee into the uncomfortable position of denying these requests.Indiana State President Richard Landini recognized the extraordinary nature of Bird's talent and supported his decision to avoid the media. Landini understood that individuals with Bird's abilities are rare and deserved respect for their choices. This situation highlights the delicate balance between a player's right to privacy and the public's desire for access to celebrated athletes.Support the showSupport the Pod or Binge the Entire Season Now! https://www.buzzsprout.com/1269236/support https://youtube.com/@IconicSeasons Connect on Social https://www.instagram.com/ncaaiconicseasons/

After Sa Pa's isolatedmix contribution last month, we continue in an unintentional alphabetical spectrum of brilliant producers, with Saphileaum. There comes a time after listening to some musicians for many years that certain instruments and musical approaches begin to stand out. Sure, most of the time you probably know what album you're sticking on the turntable, but when you have those days you put on shuffle (or when you're listening to 9128.live, cough cough), some producers start to stand out and trigger the music-geek in you from the first few seconds. It can take many years or decades to find and hone a unique style, but I think Georgian producer Andro Gogibedashvili is well on his way to carving out a unique style of organic, new-age ambient and tribal-infused techno. Saphileaum's isolatedmix is a perfect example of his style as a whole, with elements you might hear in his productions stylistically coming to the fore throughout the 25 tracks, despite not including a single track of his own in the mix. I sent Andro a few questions to complement this wonderfully energizing trip. Check out his latest release on the revered Mule Musiq label, and expect more music from him soon. ~I first came across your work in 2019 with Silent Season, how have things changed for you since? My first release on Silent Season called "The Traveler" was a sort of a turning point for me and my sound. It was music that I'd created after a pretty long break recording-wise. Since the release was out, a sort of a new journey began for me. I started making more tribalistic and electro-acoustic musical pieces and was also trying to balance them out with downtempo and half-beat grooves, sometimes a bit techno-like maybe too. I also dived a lot into Percussions and eventually ended up learning and playing on real Congas, Bongos, and Georgian Dhol. I'm still in the process of learning and hopefully, it will never end! The Traveler by Saphileaum I can start to recognize your style over the years which is often a sign of a great unique producer. But how would you describe your sound to someone new?Thank you very much! I appreciate it. I would describe my music as "Background Music", "Music which you play at gatherings", "Music for Meditation", "Music for looking at the night sky". I would describe the sound as Tribal, Ambient, Cosmic, Joyful and Relaxing. Your Discogs profile states "Saphileaum is highly inspired by esoteric, mystic, new age, cosmic and visionary art and teachings". Do you think New Age music is becoming more prevalent today? Is this something you aspire to? Yeah, I think New Age music is slowly starting to get more and more recognized. It is quite a young genre still, compared with the other ones. Plus, there are some musicians and producers who are pushing the boundaries of what New Age music can sound like and it's really amazing to see it grow. First thing that I immediately fell in love with, before listening to the actual music, was the name itself, New Age Music... Saphileaum - Transpersonal Experience by Saphileaum You've been on several labels over the years including Oslated, Constellation Tapes, Mysteries of the Deep, Mule Musique and Good Morning Tapes (the GMT released in 2021 was one of my favorites of yours). What is the goal of releasing on different labels? I look at labels as traveling to another country that I've never been to. Meeting new people, exploring its culture and heritage, and contributing to it. There are always new possibilities, new inspirations, and new crowds in every label. It's very important for me that a label where I release music has a sort of a musical or ideological vision that I share and like and that it's represented well visually. I should feel inspired by and connected to it.Can you tell us about the mix you have prepared? The mix was mainly inspired by the music I've been enjoying recently. It's ambient, but it's rhythmical and diverse. There are a few ethnic tracks that might sound similar, but they have elements that differ them culturally. I like the thin multicultural line it has, which might be tricky to notice, maybe. To be honest, there was no particular vibe I was after, I just wanted to create an interesting musical journey to enjoy. There are quite a few artists in here I'm unaware of, are there any you'd like to call out in particular? I would like to thank all the artists, whose music I've included in this mix, for creating these pieces and putting them out in the world. I recommend checking them all out, there's much more to explore! astrangelyisolatedplace · isolatedmix 126 - Saphileaum Listen on Soundcloud the ASIP Podcast or the 9128.live iOS and Android appDownload MP3Tracklist:1. Avenue Red Podcast #191 - STL

Avenue Red

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 3, 2021 126:05

Avenue Red is proud to present a long-time favourite artist of ours, a man who for over 20 years has been lurking in the darkest, most shadowy lairs of the deep subterranean underground... enter German musical mastermind Stephan Laubner, better known to most down here as STL, also as Lunatik Sound System. Located somewhere amid the Harz mountains in northern Germany, he is well known as a talented and vastly innovative producer, especially in experimental electronic, ambient and deep, dub techno circles. But almost nobody, even in these tightest and narrowest of niches has ever heard a DJ mix from this rather mysterious figure (aside from a totally out of the blue RA Podcast in 2014). Today, that changes, as he has decided to unleash some real fury right here on Avenue Red. His debut release was called "Portside Waves" and was the 13th release on Perlon in 1999, with this spooky, insanely hypnotic track coming with some bizarre infinite locked-groove loops on one side - the flipside featuring Ricardo Villalobos & Martin Schopf under their Ric Y Martin guise. This paved the way for a discography that, at time of writing, totals approximately 100 releases. As well as being the mainstay of his Something label (link below), his releases are scattered across the likes of Smallville Records, echospace [detroit], Echocord, Silent Season, Assemble Music, Phonica White, The Untold Stories and many more. We highly respect and recommend a visit to his hand-rolled Something Records website too, which is packed with soul and contains some amazing secrets waiting to be found. This mix is a live DJ performance riddled with trippy effects and unusual mixing techniques. A mix like no other. It is alien, beautiful, strange, venomous, intoxicating and downright awe-inspiring, as with everything this rare Midas has touched. "Since a while ago I have been in contact with Pierre AKA Caillou. His new label is Chateau Chépère on which I have an upcoming EP. We chatted about music and mixing and shared a few links to each other's publications (he made 2 Avenue Red Podcast episodes: 136 and 172). He was sending me a link to an Avenue Red mix he was doing and so I - or we - had the idea to send a mix from me to AR as well. Since most of the music I make is usually within the studio I am not really a DJ - more a production head. Nevertheless, sometimes I dig out those old vinyls and record a tape. The mix provided was done pretty much out of the feel and almost desire to play some records again. I don't do this every day. I keep that for special times or at meetings with some friends or family. Actually this session turned out to be very much full of life and energy. I wanted to keep with a certain flow. Tightness was not the best. However I think it is still enjoyable. Not just a dead mix, but something coming from taking the action to create something enjoyable, at least for my side. For me the music and the mixing often is something that belongs together. I mean a dub techno mix probably would not have been done this way. Glad Alec is liking it and I hope you enjoy this one at your end too :)" Stephan Laubner, November 2021 https://soundcloud.com/synthonic-matter http://www.something-records.com https://www.discogs.com/label/17573-Something https://www.discogs.com/artist/153541-STL PS. Saphileaum is one of the monikers of Tbilisi-based multi-disciplinary artist Andro Gogibedashvili, who is certainly not a stranger here at Delayed. His releases on labels like Silent Season, Oslated, Diffuse Reality, Norite, Annuled Music, NYAME, and the most recent one on Good Morning Tapes gained international recognition. They highlighted Andro's sound inspired by esoteric, new age, cosmic and visionary art and teachings. Saphileaum's approach in the studio and behind the decks brings something mystical, yet relaxing allowing listeners to find their ideal setting and enjoy the music tales told by this incredibly talented artist. The mix Saphileaum made for us is storytelling at its core. Listening to it feels like traveling through different realms in a day. From ambient, tropical, downtempo, and cosmic during the daytime, which reflects in the first part of the mix, to darker, rumbling techno and tribal during the night in the second part of the mix. This is yet another brilliant output from the artist we highly respect and look forward to hearing more from. https://saphileaum.space Saphileaum on SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/saphileaum Saphileaum on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/saphileaum/ Saphileaum on FB: https://www.facebook.com/Saphileaum www.itsdelayed.com www.instagram.com/_itsdelayed_ www.facebook.com/itsdelayed

I always label these lists and mixes as "Best Ambient," but with so much music released each year, coming up with a true best list is almost impossible. So this is really more of a list and mix of my favorite ambient albums of the year. Best of 2020 just sounds better. I don't about you but I bought a lot of ambient music this year thanks to Bandcamp Fridays. Through regular purchases and special deals, where one could get a whole discography for like $10, I think I bought about 250 ambient albums this year. Yikes! Then add in releases that labels and artists send my way and it amounts to one hell of a lot of music.  Thanks goodness for all that music though. I've been stuck working from home for almost 10 months and would have lost my mind without music to get me through it. One of the treats that got me through the year was Whitelabrecs excellent Home Diaries series. It featured music recorded and released during quarantine. I couldn't pick just one release so I cheated and put the whole series in my top 15 list. It's hard to narrow down that much music into 30 or 40 favorites. I know I will miss things. But this list has a bunch of styles so it gives a nice representation of what I listened to this year. My favorite album this year was actually an easy choice, it's Mindful Movement by Clariloops. Clariloops is Australian clarinetist, Ruby Lulham. She experiments with looping and pedals to to produce beautiful music that takes my breathe away every time I hear it. The folks at The Slow Music Movement put it best when they said, "producing music with a purity & simplicity that is both charming & striking." Please go check it out.     Here is the full list of my favorite ambient albums of 2020. I came up with a top 15 releases and then the next 30 favs are listed alphabetically.   Clariloops - Mindful Movement [self-released] 36 & zakè - Stasis Sounds For Long-Distance Space Travel [Past Inside the Present] Echoflex - Echoflex I - III [SeeHear Recordings] Alva Noto - Xerrox Vol. 4 [Noton] Vieo Abiungo - At Once- There Was No Horizon [Lost Tribe Sound] The Chi Factory - AI-18 - Travel in Peace [Astral Industries] Tapes and Topographies - Inoculations [Dronarivm] Night Sea - Still [Silent Season] Mary Lattimore - Silver Ladders [Ghostly International] Mute Forest - Riderstorm [Lost Tribe Sound] Andrew Heath - The Alchemist's Muse [Discogecko] Christopher Bissonnette - The Wine Dark Sea [Dronarivum] Anthéne and Andrew Tasselmyer - Progressions [Constellation Tatsu] Moss Covered Technology - Quiet Loops [Dewtone] Whitelabrecs Home Diaries series    Andrew Heath - A Trace of Phosphor [Discogecko] Ben Salisbury- The Insects- Geoff Barrow - Devs Soundtrack [Invada] Christopher Bissonnette - Wayfinding [12k] Ecovillage - Arrived [Dronarivum] Evan Caminiti - Varispeed Hydra Flexagon - 7 Nocturnes East Fluxion - Perspectives [Vibrant Music] glåsbird - norskfjǫrðr [whitelabrecs] Halftribe - Archipelago [sound in silence] Heavenchord & Infinity Dots - light, water and silence [secret domain] Innesti - Parenthetical Jogging House - Be [Seil] Johann Johannsson & Yair Elazar Glotman - Last And First Men [Deutsche Grammophon] Loneward - Moongate Luke Carbon - Brightest Threads [Made Now Music] Mathieu Karsenti - bygones [Slowcraft] Michael Grigoni + Stephen Vitiello - slow machines [12k] Michael Scott Dawson Nowhere, Middle of [We Are Busy Bodies] MNO - Ambient Marimba - MNO Sleeps Mount Shrine - Shortwave Ruins [Cryo Chamber] North Americans - Roped In [Third Man Records] Olafur Arnalds - some kind of peace [Mercury KX] Raymond Richards - The Lost Art Of Wandering [ESP Institute] Roméo Poirier - Hotel Nota [sferic 2020] Sibling & Heavenchord - Sounds Of Silence [greyscale] SUSS - Promise [Northern Spy Records] Thom Brennan - Night Lights William Ryan Fritch - Sodium [lost tribe sound] William Ryan Fritch - The Letdown [lost tribe sound] Yagya - Old Dreams And Memories [Small Plastic Animals]     Cheers!     - - - T R A C K L I S T - - - 00:00    Clariloops - Mindful Movement [Mindful Movement] 05:50    Vieo Abiungo - At Once, There Was No Horizon [At Once, There Was No Horizon on Lost Tribe Sound] 09:36    The Chi Factory - Travel in Peace Part 1 [Astral Industries] 14:45    Mary Lattimore - Sometimes He's in My Dreams [Silver Ladders on Ghostly International] 17:55    Mute Forest - Return [Riderstorm on Lost Tribe Sound] 21:22    Ecovillage - She Walks In Beauty [Arrived on Dronarivum] 24:24   Andrew Heath - The Alchemist's Muse [The Alchemist's Muse on Discogecko] 31:36    Moss Covered Technology - Untitled Quiet Loop #1 [Quiet Loops on Dewtone] 34:23    Tapes and Topographies - Always The Last Time(SineRider Remix) [Inoculations on Dronarivum] 37:28    Anthéne and Andrew Tasselmyer - Progressions, Pt 1 [Progressions on Constellation Tatsu] 41:48    36 & zakè - Stasis Sounds for Long-Distance Space Travel Stage 2 [Stasis Sounds for Long-Distance Space Travel on Past Inside the Present] 47:30    Night Sea - Manila [Still on Silent Season] 54:00    Evan Caminiti - Radio Rome [Varispeed Hydra on Dust Editions] 56:21    Sibling & Heavenchord - Spacechord [Sounds Of Silence on Greyscale] 1:05:20    Alva Noto - Xerrox Voyage [Xerrox Vol. 4 on Noton] 1:08:33    Echoflex - 50°20'17"N 4°11'50"W Veering NW [Echoflex 1 on SeeHear Recordings] 1:12:55    Christopher Bissonnette - See With Eyes Closed [The Wine Dark Sea on Dronarivum] 1:17:31    Mathieu Karsenti - Upwards [bygones on Slowcraft] 1:21:38    Adrian Lane - We Glance Outside [Home Diaries 23 on Whitelabrecs] 1:23:57    Mount Shrine - Subtotem [Shortwave Ruins on Cryp Chamber] 1:30:24    Flexagon - La Crocq Pier 5am [7 Nocturnes East] 1:38:22    Jogging House - Yours [Be on Seil] 1:42:09    Halftribe - We Are Dust [Archipelago on Sound in Silence] 1:45:35    William Ryan Fritch - Movement XVIII [Sodium on Lost Tribe Sound] 1:49:58    end

It is dance music where layered rhythms act almost on a neural, sub epidermal level, while moving and evolving soundscapes acquire a tactile, understated physicality. Chicago born @Antenes is a Brooklyn based synth obsessive. She builds her own modulars and then sets them to the future to cook up rough edged warehouse tracks that are gritty and bleakly atmospheric, as well as more textured, detailed ambient work. She has done installations at Moogfest as well as playing as far afield as China, Colombia and Japan, and has appeared on LIES, Silent Season, Bunker NY and Mord. She DJs as well as playing live, has roots in goth and industrial as well as noise from her early years playing guitar, but also has a real love of techno, electro and experimental. Her darkly absorbing mix for us this week includes tracks from Electric Indigo, Stephanie Merchak, Fjader, Oisel, Rrose, Lonefront, DJ ESP, Erica Mar, Wata Igarashi, Silent Servant, Ewa Justka, Bergsonist and Uun. It reflects her interest in a healthy amount of ominous dance hypnagogia while also drawing from a large pool of influences from the experimental to her roots in the Midwest. “The ESP track in there has some weird filtering and panning with the crunchy drums for example,” she says, “I love hearing how raw it is”.

Fleetwood has played to audiences across the Midwest predominantly at DIY parties but also in clubs such as Chicago's Smartbar, Detroit's Tangent Gallery, Washington DC's Flash, and further afield at Berlin's Griessmuehle and ://about blank. Wherever he plays, he utilizes his lifelong musical curatorial ear and penchant for fanatical record digging to bring fervor to dancefloors across the world.

HAPPY 2017 FOLKS! We are super excited to present our first podcast of the New Year featuring an extremely talented artist who has been on our radar for a while, REFRACTED. Originally from Spain but based in Berlin for several years now, he has been releasing exquisite productions for Silent Season; his own Mind Express; the inauguration EP of Polegroup's digital-only sublabel, Aine; and most recently his one-tracker to Polegroup's Unknown Landscapes Volume 4. As you will soon hear, Refracted's mixing skills are unique and incomparable, always weaving in and out of different techno styles and tempos equally as masterfully as effortlessly. His contribution for us is a Live recording from his recent warmup set at Globus, Tresor, where he delivered an absolutely astonishing, mind-blowing set. It is perfectly balanced, captivating, and most importantly it is the essence of what music represents to him "it is all about connections and it's at its most vital when it speaks to you in a voice only you seem to hear." Ladies and gentlemen, this is Refracted mixing live from Tresor. Next up on The Erratic Podcast we are very excited to welcome aboard another extremely talented, young artist, this time coming straight from France, HYDRANGEA. She specializes on the deeper, more emotive side of techno and with every one of her works she delivers truly stunning pieces of electronic music. Much like the name describes itself, Hydrangea's sound is based on nature and the organic emotions it inspires on her – hiding at the core doses of both enchanting and intoxicating sonics. Thus far in her tenure as an artist, she's managed to release among the best labels catering to this unique and enthralling sound: Silent Season, Annulled, Natch, and Dust Recordings all of which have received outstanding reception and feedback. In 2015, her debut LP "Dawn Lights" came to fruition, followed a few months later by her self-released LP "Escape From Reality" – an extremely personal and heartfelt tribute to the passing of her sister – via her own Bandcamp page. As you will soon hear throughout the next 50 minutes of utterly captivating soundscapes, Hydrangea has a bright future ahead (including several projects to see the light of day shortly), and she feels right at home when expounding her complex palette of ethereal emotions. For the third time Avenue Red welcome back the immense iceberg of musical knowledge and sophisticated selectionism that is Verdant Recordings. We have been sitting on this mix for several weeks and have digested it and ground it down to some sort of atomic-level powder... we expect you to follow suit with this intergalactic mix of deep tunes. "I made this mix a few weeks back, not long after Bloc and during the inevitable comedown that always follows. Music is a powerful mood changer, so this was simply about going through some tunes whilst recording the session. There wasn't any consideration to play 'happy' tunes (I don't have that many!), but it was more about getting into the headspace of genuinely enjoying a deep mix. There's some new tracks here from Frazer Campbell, Evigt Mörker, Dorisburg, an amazing remix by Edit-Select just out on Silent Season, which I've really been digging alongside gems from John Daly, Causa and Recondite. Enjoy the tunes and thanks for listening!" Yuka is a female DJ now based in Moscow (where she has lived since 1998), but who began her career in distant Bratsk, Siberia. The town - a local industrial center - is probably more famous for what it dumps than what it makes; in the recent past it was listed as one of the thirty most polluted cities in the world. It wouldn't take much persuasion for someone to move on... Yuka's preparation for a shift to the capital's nightclubs was lengthy, however, since music had played an important role in her life since the age of 6. Over time, her passions moved in the direction of painting, sculpture, and design - activities she continues to this day. That initial school-day enthusiasm at the piano would eventually win out, though, and dictate her choice of higher education. Her musical training thus led to a degree from the Irkutsk Arts Institute, where she no doubt studied under her real name, Irina Solobutova. Now that she's fully ensconced in Moscow, her music appears regularly through the outlets of four labels: Fullpanda, Semantica, Silent Season, Pro-Tez. She is a resident of Fullpanda label parties named ALL YOU NEED IS EARS.

"I want to know how people did what they did. And I want to know how that compares with how I did what I did. That's my whole life. It's not really a life. It's a life of inquiry. It's a life of getting off your ass, knocking on a door, walking a few steps or a great distance to pursue a story.
